Just thought people might be interested if you don't already know.

Channel 4 on Weds 1 Feb. A programme called Extraordinary Breastfeeding is on. The write up in the magazine I'm looking at says:

"You'll be texting your friends about this as soon as it starts. It's about the phenomenon of mothers who breastfeed their kiddies well beyond the age considered 'normal' in this country. Seeing a feisty mum breastfeed her two-year-old twin isn't that disturbing, but the sequence of another lady suckling her 7 year old dughter isn't one we will forget in a hurry. "

I'm looking forward to seeing the tone it takes.

Hmm, my periods started when I was 11. Quite a few girls now start menstruating at 10 now. I look at the charming young pre-teens at DD1's school and quite frankly do not envisage any of them b/fing.

I also don't see what on earth is wrong with 'sexualising' breasts. They're frequently considered very sexy, to the owner and the beholder. Denying that link, I think, actually devalues some of the pro-b/fing case (I too am very pro-b/fing, as it happens).

'If not, why not have 15 year olds being breastfed? Why not, it's not sexual!'

Many of the boys I knew at that age would certainly be keen to try .

Aloha · 24/01/2006 22:00

My stepdaughter had the beginnings of her own breasts at 10. Unimaginable and totally revolting to think of her mother breastfeeding her at that age.
I think it is a shame to make a freakshow programme about breastfeeding. It is the last thing women need.

expatinscotland · 24/01/2006 22:01

LOL! Just thought about two teens being rumbled in flagrante delicto. 'It's not sexual, Mum, I was just . . .erm . . . breastfeeding. . . '

It doesn't say though that the mother gave her the breastfeed as a birthday treat, just that the girl asked for it. So I would repeat that maybe we should wait until we've seen the programme before making our mind up about the situation.

I agree with those here who find it regrettable that this will be in the programme at all. It would be much more helpful to just have a programme about breastfeeding of babies and toddlers/possibly small children.

But it wouldn't make such good TV, would it? [sigh]

FrannytheQuinoaEater · 24/01/2006 22:32

I don't think anyone has said "Oh great, breastfeeding a ten year old, that's really normal and will endear the public to the cause of extended breastfeeding."

But knowing MN, somebody probably will before this thread dies.

Piggiesmum · 24/01/2006 22:37

Haven't read all the thread yet cos still pmsl at "Celebrity Norkfeeding Island" and "Breastfeeding Big Brother" and am in serious danger of shaking ds awake who is/was asleep on my knee

JoolsToo · 24/01/2006 22:42

if its a programme about breastfeeding it should encompass all the extremes - you can't hide certain aspects of it.

I'm just shocked I completely agree with Aloha

emkana · 24/01/2006 22:51

No she said it was up to you.
What do you want her to say - that the police should come and call for a woman who would let her dh b/feed?
There are all sorts of people around - apparently some like to be pood on .
Whatever floats their boat as long as it's not affecting anybody else...

No, it's tasty. It's Swiss Miss, a brand I can't get here. It's basically non-alcoholic apple cider in a powder. Used to take it camping w/me back in the US and have a hot toddy over the fire. Mmmmm. The perfect nightcap.

GDG · 24/01/2006 22:53

yeuch - give me horlicks!!

expatinscotland · 24/01/2006 22:56

What kind of spirit can you put in Horlick's, tho?

GDG · 24/01/2006 22:56
