Just thought people might be interested if you don't already know.

Channel 4 on Weds 1 Feb. A programme called Extraordinary Breastfeeding is on. The write up in the magazine I'm looking at says:

"You'll be texting your friends about this as soon as it starts. It's about the phenomenon of mothers who breastfeed their kiddies well beyond the age considered 'normal' in this country. Seeing a feisty mum breastfeed her two-year-old twin isn't that disturbing, but the sequence of another lady suckling her 7 year old dughter isn't one we will forget in a hurry. "

I'm looking forward to seeing the tone it takes.

Psst- I said that a few posts down too, fastasleep!

fastasleep · 01/02/2006 15:00

Poo! You're not selling it cheaper are you?

Poo!

FairyMum · 01/02/2006 15:01

fastasleep, I think my 7 year-old would love some of your super immunity milk for her birthday. So cheap too!

nanneh · 01/02/2006 15:01

lazycow - love the name !

I think what you have suggested does go on in some devloping countries, taking shifts to feed. Seems quite a good idea to me.

Me, I used to fantasize about DH breastfeeding DS while I slept, but not sure whether DH would have tried to lactate so that I could get more sleep ???!!! What would his work mates have said about that then ??

Please - don't call me a perv !!

lazycow · 01/02/2006 15:03

If I have another and you're still bfing then can I get some? - sounds good value to me.

I'd have bfed baby with none of the pain etc. I think I should have been born upper class in the days of wet nurses

lol I would give it free if anyone did want it, I was making 7 litres a week too much but then cut down my pumps so now I'm making just a little more than my DD needs

flashingnose · 01/02/2006 15:09

Just heard Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 2 talking about this programme - one of his sidekicks is an extended breastfeeder and was echoing the hope on this thread that it's a fair and non-sensationalist programme.

The sidekick (whose name is Janey, I think) came across very well and not at all loon-like .

MissChief · 01/02/2006 15:13

btw, sure it's already been answered but how do people commonly define extended bfing? Am I moving into such territory by going beyond 6 mths in some people's eyes?? Just curious.

bundy · 01/02/2006 15:14

I would think most people would say so misschief, but I'd probably work from 12 months + as a better "definition"

nanneh · 01/02/2006 15:17

I think bundy is right. Here in the UK I would think 12 months + is a more accurate definition.

Have to say I hate the word "extended" though, I wish there was a more commonly used word for it.

Filyjonk · 01/02/2006 15:26

nanneh-lol at extended. Oh how horribly accurate that word is for me, atm...

tiktok · 01/02/2006 15:29

Fairymum, you are right -sort of.

Those chickenpox antibodies are not there all the time in breastmilk. They only come into play when you are exposed to the virus again, and you make 'em, and mirror antibodies go into your milk at the same time.

This is how the immune system works, I think - antibodies made as a result of exposure to something, which are then called up again when there is further exposure.

That's my understanding of it, but I could be wrong about the finer details.

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 15:30

thanks tamum
interesting bundy - about the bovine colostrum.

nanneh - I'm always cheery love
(even when debating)

lazycow · 01/02/2006 17:14

RTKangaMummy - I think you should start a new one after the programme - though I doubt it will be as entertaining as this one has been

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 17:17

ok I will just not be able to post this evening then

cos it won't load properly and takes too long for me to join in convers

ruty · 01/02/2006 17:20

oh god just saw Richard Madeley grilling two extremely sensible mothers. That man is so annoying!

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 17:21

well can't say it looked awful but I still don't think it's necessary at that age - but that's just my personal view.

The Spanish lady was a bit defensive I thought - her husband certainly seems to have a bit of a problem with it although she denied this.

Both families home educated their children so no peer pressure at school comes to bear in their situation.

The woman feeding the 8 year old said 'children lose the ability to suck' (her daughter couldn't get any milk that morning and seem to have a bit of strop about it) I find that statement quite ridiculous - there are those strange fellows who like to dress as babies and find women who will suckle them

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 17:21

ruty - that completely unfair - he did not grill them at all!

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 17:21

But as I think these mothers are totally barking people prob won't want me posting anyway

I have seen 2 progs with them on and they are all mad IMHO

Feeding 8 year olds is IMHO wrong

IMHO also the fact that they are home educated too is also significant I agree that home schooling is good for some families BUT I think these parents are not of the "real world"

lazycow · 01/02/2006 17:22

RTKangamummy - oh go on then - start a new thread - I don't suppose anyone has much more to say before the programme actually starts -
