Just thought people might be interested if you don't already know.

Channel 4 on Weds 1 Feb. A programme called Extraordinary Breastfeeding is on. The write up in the magazine I'm looking at says:

"You'll be texting your friends about this as soon as it starts. It's about the phenomenon of mothers who breastfeed their kiddies well beyond the age considered 'normal' in this country. Seeing a feisty mum breastfeed her two-year-old twin isn't that disturbing, but the sequence of another lady suckling her 7 year old dughter isn't one we will forget in a hurry. "

I'm looking forward to seeing the tone it takes.

RUTY I have to disagree with you R & J were very fair IMHO

But these women are barking IMHO

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 17:25

kanga - you're so funny

start your new thread girl

ruty · 01/02/2006 17:27

well as you think the women are barking of course you don't think richard grilled them! I thought his tone was patronising and snide, as it is in general, but a bit more. I can't understand why people think they have to judge mothers who are doing something perfectly natural - that is bonkers IMO - and representative of a rather repressed society. Right, running for cover!

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 17:27

I will just be very slow and behind with my comments and so everyone else will have to just put up with that

I am sure there is nothing in the programme that will convert me to thinking that 8 yer olds should be put to the breast

Just saw R & J - I thought the questions were stupid (god I hate that man he is such a t**) but had to be asked as they reflected the prejudices of the MASSIF that they interviewed on the streets of Birmingahm.

I thought the 2 women both came across quite well though. Didn't look or sound like lunatics to me.

I thought the husband of the Spanish women a bit weird though, not because he seemed uncomfortable with her breastfeeding their 4 years old but because he had loads of dandruff on his jacket (yuk !)

ruty · 01/02/2006 17:47

agree with you nanneh - i didn't see the husband tho, must have come in late - did he go somewhere?

JendleWendleBells · 01/02/2006 19:34

I actually thought R&J did a good job on this. Especially saying that they could not find one expert to say that extending BFing was in any way physically or psychologically damaging. But the women were a bit alternative, if you know what I mean. Why is that always the case?

Re BFing an 8 year old - psychologically what need does that 8 year old have that is being met by BFing? Ahh!

JendleWendleBells · 01/02/2006 19:37

One other thing troubling me ... You know how the nutritional composition of your BM changes as your baby gets older, what happens re feeding a newborn and a toddler? Do the nutritional needs of the newborn win and your BM meets those? (Hence the colostrum induced squits in toddlers?)

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 19:39

there's a new thread JWB

JendleWendleBells · 01/02/2006 19:43

Sorry - please see new thread!

wantedmyboobsback · 01/02/2006 19:50

i breastfed first 2 for 6 months and stopped after that for fear of the state of my boobs was horrified after baby 2 at the saggy state of my once lovley cleavage currently expecting no3 will feed for 6 months then im stopping and ive been promised a boob job the thought of extended breastfeeding or whatever you want to call it makes me shudder i am aware of doing whats best for your kids but i also have a responsiblity to hubby to remain the sexy attractive woman he married not a lactating cow dont get me wrong i didnt hate feeding i found it easy and have 2 healthy children but my milk factory closed when they reached 6 months and it was straight onto formula for them

sunshinebaby · 04/02/2006 19:55
