Just thought people might be interested if you don't already know.

Channel 4 on Weds 1 Feb. A programme called Extraordinary Breastfeeding is on. The write up in the magazine I'm looking at says:

"You'll be texting your friends about this as soon as it starts. It's about the phenomenon of mothers who breastfeed their kiddies well beyond the age considered 'normal' in this country. Seeing a feisty mum breastfeed her two-year-old twin isn't that disturbing, but the sequence of another lady suckling her 7 year old dughter isn't one we will forget in a hurry. "

I'm looking forward to seeing the tone it takes.

LOL at 'stunt nursing', JendleWB!

Channel 4 had better live up to their current reputation for outrageous sensationalism atm, i have re-arranged my week for this!

(did anyone see 'Chopped Off' last night - or the trailer for next weeks 'shocker' the 'Half Ton Man'?)

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 13:32

"nellie - I loved it. Lucky animals to get human milk!"

but they're getting milk meant for another species! why would you want to do that [rolls eyes]

(also I'm a bit concerned that you 'loved it' [shock})

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 13:38

tiktok - as regards EBM - you may be able to educate me here but I would have thought that each mother's breast milk is unique?

As I said, if it was going to be a life saver, of course I would use it and be grateful for it!

nanneh · 01/02/2006 13:41

JT - that is because I am not only the
Boob Crusader From Hell, but I am also a bit kinky and think that giving human milk to other species is quite good for them...

In fact I think I will e-mail Ch. 4 right now to tell them that I have a very good idea for a peak time TV programme that will pull in the punters big time - women with boobs feeding baby animals !!!

harpsichordcarrier · 01/02/2006 13:45

nanneh put me down for bf a giraffe pls
my life gets more surreal by the day

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 13:58

so giving human milk to other species is tickety-boo but the reverse is the devil's brew?

that's logic!

harpsichordcarrier · 01/02/2006 14:00

er no JT
we're joking
(well I am. can't vouch for nanneh, you know what those extended bf are like, perves avery last one of them )

tiktok · 01/02/2006 14:08

Jools - I think it is bonkers to give tiger cubs doggy milk, and for women to feed monkeys, too.

Each mother's milk is unique in terms of the precise antibodies it has, but human milk is the same in the quality of nutrition, and certainly better than cows milk for baby humans.

Each cow's milk is unique, if it comes to that, though the antibodies in it (bovine, anyway, so no use to us) are destroyed by the time it reaches a doorstep, or a can of formula.

Still at a loss to understand why you wouldn't want to use EBM from someone else, if you were the one giving it in a bottle.

If you are concerned about each mother's milk being unique (though why that would put you off, I don't know), then why are you not concerned about each cow's milk being unique?

All cow milk of course gets sloshed in together - unless you live on a farm and develop a preference for Daisy's or Buttercup's....

As far as I know, banked human milk is all sloshed in together as well - someone might confirm or deny that.

So - Jools.....do explain

harpsichordcarrier · 01/02/2006 14:12

actually I would happily bf another woman's baby.
without a hesitation, if a friend asked me to.

bundy · 01/02/2006 14:13

certain amount of mixing going on here...(see pictures at bottom of page)

fastasleep · 01/02/2006 14:16

Actually I think for testing purposes (before and after pasteurising it) they use just one mothers donation at a time, usually they will only take it away in bulk so they collect it at intervals giving you enough time to build up a stock as it were... then they mix all that together...

I think!

Still better than cows, especially as they sit in their own shit in a field all day lol

fastasleep · 01/02/2006 14:19

Yes, I'm right that is how they do it..

Can't really see a farmer lovingly wiping his cows nipples with a milton wipe every time they get hooked up to the machine, can you?

I'm actually going to watch this now. I wasn't before!

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 14:23

so how do one person's antibodies marry with another from a totally different family? (I'm no biologist!)

As you say bovine milk is 'cleaned' before we humans drink it, that's why I have no problem with it - and to be fair it has been proved to a good source of calcium.

To be truthful Tiktok, if EBM had been an option and available in shops - I probably would have used it

(Photos on women, from whatever continent, breastfeeding animals definitely does not do it for me I'm afraid!)

JoolsToo · 01/02/2006 14:23

of

hunkermunker · 01/02/2006 14:24

HC, can you have DS2 for a bit then so I can get a night's sleep?

Actually...that's not a bad idea - an overnight wet nursing service

fastasleep · 01/02/2006 14:25

EBM is 'cleaned' in just the same exact way!

I think it depends on the mother's diet more than anything, the antibodies aren't going to vary vastly unless she's just given birth, had a preemie, or the child is over 6 months, AFAIK those are the times when the milk changes it's quality... so you could brand it in the same way as formula milk really

nanneh · 01/02/2006 14:26

JT - cheer up love - I was just kidding.
Oh and sorry no don't agree that feeding a baby tiger human milk is the same as giving a human baby cow's milk. It's rather different !

harpsi - yes def. mad me ....in fact totally bovine moooooo mad, I drink too much cow's milk on me Crunchynuts, me thinks !!

I would def. feed another woman's baby if asked. In fact my aunt fed my baby brother for a few days when my mum was sick (this is way before I was born).

Tiktok - more seriously - is the BM of a relative better than the BM of a total stranger as genetically the relative would be closer to my baby ?

tamum · 01/02/2006 14:27

Antibodies aren't determined genetically as such, JT, they are determined by what you've been exposed to. I have to say I would have thought that bovine ones would have been fine, had they been there, it's the fact that they're pasteurised away that's the problem

harpsichordcarrier · 01/02/2006 14:30

of course hunker, I would be delighted to do so
the more the merrier

bundy · 01/02/2006 14:31

bovine colstrum (sold as a powder i think) is a v active area of research in bowel disorders (crohn's etc) at the moment.

nanneh · 01/02/2006 14:31

thanks tamum - I think you have answred my question. re relatives.

hunkermunker · 01/02/2006 14:31

Shall we set up the "Overnight Norkfeeding Club"?

fastasleep · 01/02/2006 14:33

Do you thin if a kid that knew how to breastfeed tries on me...it might.....work?! OMG I would love to have someone actually properly breastfeed from me... not that any of you would want them to have my antibiotic ridden milk !

I do wonder about the affect of pasteurising EBM, how good is it compared to formula after that process? I wonder if I can find out!

fastasleep · 01/02/2006 14:33

think and tried! Typing not going very well today
