weaning or not weaning while pregnant?

I'm really not sure whether (or indeed how) to wean. DS is 13 months, I am 9 weeks pregnant. He is a co-sleeping boobaholic (normally five plus times a night). It's not a major problem at the moment, I feel ok, not too tired.

BUT, I'm worried about a couple of things

  1. Not sure whether I want to be feeding two at once (my mum really disaproves which pisses me off as it means I can't even have a sensible discussion about my doubts)
  2. Haven't got a clue how to wean without causing a LOT of distress
  3. Sometimes I do think 'you don't really need to feed that often, do you?' and I do long for a full night's sleep
  4. I'm concerned when the new baby is here whether I can cope with the demands of two night feeders and am wondering whether weaning and transition to own room might be best. But I love co-sleeping.

Has anyone got any experience of this?

Hi Waspandbee,

I'm tandem feeding my girls and had no idea how things were going to go. If you're open to it then you might just want to play it by ear and see how it goes. Some mothers hate BF during pregnancy, sometimes their supply drops and their child self-weans. You never know how things will go!

One thing I will add is that there are advantages to tandem feeding. I really feel that it helped to ease DD1's transition from only child to big sister. It's also invaluable as a parenting tool for tantruming toddlers! We have ended up co-sleeping with both our DDs and it suits us well. There's a BF and pregnant thread and a tandem feeding thread, I'll find then for you in a second.

This is a really good book and it has some weaning ideas in there too if you decide that it's not for you.

my babies were much younger but i bf during 2 pregancies. ds1 got to 13months but was only comfort feeding a couple of times a day, ds2 got to about 11months and was becoming very difficult to feed during the day. they both seemed to really notice a drop in supply during the pregnancies so were pretty much self weaning.

Thanks for your thoughts. That BF while pg thread is really useful, thank you, goes over a lot of thoughts and concerns I've been having

Yes, I fed through pregnancy and tandem fed. Ds was 2y4m when dd was born. It was painful all through but not agony. It was uncomfortable near the end when my bump was huge. When dd arrived it was nice that he got his own time with me and made to feel special. You'll hear a lot of rubbish from health professionals and family but on the whole its possible and its fine
