I brought SMA gold for dd when she was a baby.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 11/12/2005 17:02

they are all much of a muchness. i prefer aptamil over sma, seems to make them less prone to constipation, and also doesn't stain clothes yellow like SMA does!

Mistletoo · 11/12/2005 17:04

dd had sma but it tastes vile
ds's had cow and gate - this was donkeys years ago and they've all grown up very healthy indeed and I'm sure forumla has improved immensely since way back then

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 11/12/2005 17:05

I bought SMA Gold but for no other reason than I failed at Breast feeding and it seemed to be the more popular choice in the hospital. There was no particular reason why.

katzglitterytree · 11/12/2005 17:07

someone gave me a great piece if advice when switching from breast to formula and that was choose one you can get as locally as possible so if you run out you can get some quickly!

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 11/12/2005 17:07

Someone taste tested and said Aptimal and Hipp Organic were best. I'd chosen Hipp on basis of it being organic, having less packaging than some and was higher on list of ethical companies than others (again someone posted on this - maybe do an archive search). DD is mainly bf and seems to like it so I suppose it can't be too bad!

vickiyumyum · 11/12/2005 17:08

the only thing i really know about formula is that babies who have been in special or transitional care are recommended aptamil as apparently it is easier to digest, but couldn't vouch for that as am neither a nutrional expert or someone who has used formula.

RosiePosie · 11/12/2005 17:18

Yup, I taste tested them all about 18 months ago. SMA, Farley's and C&G all tasted bitter and chemical ridden. Aptamil and Hipp organic both tasted sweet and creamy

hercules · 11/12/2005 17:19

agree with others about aptimal and hipp organic.

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 11/12/2005 17:21

Really!

Well that is interesting to know.

dulwichmummy · 11/12/2005 20:27

I mainly bf my DD and used aptamil for the odd bottle here and there as I found expressing wore me out. I used SMA gold first of all but that didn't go down too well.

Agree about the one you can buy locally - I also found it really helpful to have a couple of the ready made cartons in the cupboard for the emergencies when milk was required instantly, I couldn't feed (eg because I was throwing up, sorry for TMI) and we could't wait for the kettle to boil and cool. Also massively useful if you are going out and about.

they are all much of a muchness really. I used SMA Gold as that was what the hospital used. People on here tend to think Aptamil is the best one.

expatinscotland · 11/12/2005 20:47

I formula fed DD1 on Cow & Gate Organic. Seemed to work allright.

Marneychristmas · 11/12/2005 20:50

SMA, cow and gate and farleys made dd ill.

GoldFrankincenseandMerlin · 11/12/2005 20:53

used SMA Gold and White for both DS1 and 2 - never had any probs at all.

deckthehillswithboughsofmummy · 11/12/2005 21:28

I used sma gold and white with both of mine with no problem. Mainly used it because it was what was available in hospital and is readily available.

santabops · 11/12/2005 21:52

sma gold was the one that dd refluxed with the least so used that and did so with ds too.

followthestarlover · 11/12/2005 21:54

sma and cow and gate made DS very, very constipated.

farleys and aptimil made him very sick... like, the whole lot after every feed.

hipp organic is fine, as is cow and gate organic.

funnygirl · 11/12/2005 21:54

I use Aptamil as that was what was fed to DD in hospital.

PantomimEDAMe · 11/12/2005 21:59

I used Aptamil because the word on the street was it went well with breastfeeding (ds was b/f plus one bottle formula/day from about six weeks. He was fine but have since discovered it's all part of their marketing strategy - Aptamil is marketed at middle-class mums, apparently (who are allegedly more likely to feel guilty about bottle-feeding - don't shoot me, this is just the thinking behind it, I hear). Next time if I mixed- or bottle-fed I'd save my money and buy another brand.

followthestarlover · 11/12/2005 22:08

are you breastfeeding and switching to formula? justb eing nosy btw... lol

i think you just have to try and see what you get on with... none of them are "better" than others... all depends what your baby likes and is well with

Hulababy · 11/12/2005 22:09

When I moved DD onto formula we used SMA. First the Gold, then the White and later on the follow on. She is 3.5yo now and healthy with no allergies or anything.

mazzystar · 11/12/2005 22:13

our little guzzler happily downed everything

i did mixed feeding from 4 mos and mainly used hipp organic and C&G "hungry" variety when couldn't get it. the hipp seems to smell worse than the others though.

but it is all so personal, you'll have to see what you baby likes!

RudiRedNose · 11/12/2005 22:17

Personally, dd is on SMA gold which has been very easy to get hold of. I chose it because my sister used it and I was desperate! Seems to have worked out fine, though.
You/baby will have to 'suck it and see' (for want of a hundred better expressions) Good luck, hope it works out with the first one you pick!
