Is there an 'extended' breastfeeding support thread?

Or would I be better off on LLL?

Just read the 'school-age children' thread with interest but didn't want to derail :)

dd is 1 today so it's not 'extended' bf by any normal definition but judging by the number of 'Are you going to carry on breastfeeding her?' (yes because otherwise she'll be composed primarily of grapes) conversations I've had inflicted on me in the last week I think I'm going to need all the support I can get Grin

so proud we made it this far - ha ha!

No, MBJ, it doesn't mention anything like colostrum.

I'm the same - I have days where I feel confident about DS's food, then days when I wobble. I think it's normal to feel they're not eating enough but if food they'll (generally) is being offered, I think they'll normally eat what they need.

The book My Child Won't Eat by LLL has often been recommended, although I've not read it myself.

I'm feeling smug pleased that DS has suddenly developed a passion for cabbage and raw peas - this is the boy who previously had No Vegetables At All for about 4 months.

Woodlands, welcome. Hope tomorrow goes okay.

Hi ThePathanKhansWoman and Woodlands

I'm sure your DS will be fine at nursery Woodlands. It's amazing how well they cope, and I think that when mum isn't around they learn quickly not to expect a bfeed. But I'm the worst at taking my own advice and if it was me I'd be worrying too.

Oh TruthSweet I'm really sorry to hear about your DDs problems. I really hope you get some good news tomorrow. We'll all be here if you need hand holding or a friendly ear. Maybe even an unmumsnetty hug.
I'll be thinking of you and DD.

TruthSweet · 19/07/2011 09:51

Thanks for everyone's thoughts - I really appreciate it. DD2's appointment isn't until the afternoon so we are playing sweet shops this morning (her favourite game!) and one which totally blows the 'extended bfers only feed their children mung beans and tofu' myth out of the water Wink

MBJ - I have a small presentation I did on colostrum that might be interesting (or it might not!) if you'd like me to send it to you (it's a PDF file)? It has a break down of the differences between colostrum and mature milk (i.e. 15 days+ milk) but not 12m+ milk which would probably be more helpful!

ThePathanKhansWoman · 19/07/2011 11:30

Best wishes for todays appt.truth, will be thinking of you both.

TruthSweet · 19/07/2011 15:01

Panic over. She's fine.

She has the blood markers that raise the risk for the eye disease but not the disease it self which is apparently incredibly rare even if a child does have the markers. If only the rheumatologist could have told us that to start with Angry

TheRealMBJ · 19/07/2011 15:10

I'm so glad to hear that truth, you must be so relieved.

I would love to have a look at your presentation, will PM my email address.

KD0706 · 19/07/2011 15:20

Great news truth. Must be a load off your mind Smile

organiccarrotcake · 19/07/2011 15:22

Just nipping in to say a bit phew to truth xxx

Don't get much time to drop in here. Only on other threads because I'm avoiding work... should really be doing other things.

Waves to all :)

ThePathanKhansWoman · 19/07/2011 15:23

Thats great news truth, what a weight off Smile.

TruthSweet · 19/07/2011 15:27

I was so relieved, I nearly burst into tears in the appointment Blush

EauRouge · 19/07/2011 15:32

Brilliant, I'm glad it went well. Grin Don't blame you for bursting into tears, it must have been so worrying.

organiccarrotcake · 19/07/2011 15:41

NEARLY? I would have been in absolute bits of jelly on the floor.

Woodlands · 19/07/2011 15:47

Great news truth!

No nursery for us today, DS had the runs again big time overnight (I binned the PJs...), so it will be Thursday at the earliest before we can go in. I am offering him BFs very frequently, I haven't fed this often for months!

Cosmosis · 19/07/2011 16:14

Great news truth!

AchtungBaby · 19/07/2011 16:54

Truthsweet, that's really good news Smile.

AngelDog · 19/07/2011 22:31

Fantastic, Truth.

Woodlands, hope your DS is better soon.

TruthSweet · 19/07/2011 22:44

Woodlands - just being a bit curious about your son's poo ('cos I'm weird like that!). Is it mustardy and liquid, perhaps like chicken korma sauce or is it watery (like poo 'swirled' with water)?

I found that if mine stopped eating food/dropped food intake drastically as a toddler they very quickly went back to bf baby poo from toddler solid poo, it was usually quite explosive (I think they got used to the effort it takes to push out solid poo which is a bit excessive for liquid/very soft poo!). If the vomiting has stopped but the poo is very 'bf' looking it might just be that way until solid intake increases.

I would still err on the side of caution and not send him to nursery just yet but it might explain the continuing loose stools.

If this isn't the case ignore me Grin

Woodlands · 20/07/2011 13:11

Thanks, truth - it is definitely more like chicken korma. I do think it's loose because he's not been eating much, and am counting yesterday morning's explosion as the last episode so we're off to nursery tomorrow. I hope it will be OK - I really don't want to run the risk of spreading it round, but I honestly think he's fine and the poos will harden up as he starts eating more. He had a pretty big tea last night so fingers crossed! He is just incredibly grumpy today. I am so sick of being unable to see other babies. If we weren't at nursery today, I could have taken him to his swimming lesson this morning, and right now it's about to be the last toddler group before the holidays at the children's centre starting in 5 minutes. I am feeling very noble for not going!

AngelDog · 21/07/2011 00:22

Last night I thought how lovely it is (sometimes!) feeding a semi-verbal child. 18 m.o. DS was stirring last night so I went into the bedroom. He turned over, muttered, "Mummy! Milk!" and went straight back to sleep again. Sweet dreams :)

And a question - if a toddler has lots of feeds, I presume that suggests that their natural age weaning is a loooong way off?

TheRealMBJ · 21/07/2011 11:00

Ahhh! How lovely Angel

I can't wait for DS to be more verbal. He is learning 2 languages at the same time so it seems to be taking him a while to get there. Although, he does say 'na-na' for milk (or anything else he really enjoys) and has said sta-be-y a couple of times for strawberry, his favourite food Grin

EauRouge · 21/07/2011 11:04

Angel, DD1 still feeds loads. She is 2.9yo now, I reckon she might self wean before she leaves home. Maybe Grin

mawbroon · 21/07/2011 22:25

Yup, IME, a toddler feeding lots at that age is unlikely to suddenly wean!!

I bumped into somebody today who I hadn't seen since last summer and recalled a conversation I had with her where I told her that ds1 was possibly about to wean. And here we are a year on, and it still doesn't seem to be anywhere close!!

AngelDog · 21/07/2011 22:40

I thought as much, mawbroon!

Thankfully I enjoy it and it's brilliant for days like today when DS injured his arm and needed pain relief / comfort. He feeds 4-7 times a day normally, although more if he's upset / bored / shattered / ill / injured.

MBJ, I'd heard it takes longer for bilingual children to talk - a friend of mine's bilingual 23 m.o. only has 2 words. I like 'sta-be-y' though! DS talks, but only Daddy, Mummy, tea, car and harbour are understandable to anyone other than DH or me. I provide a constant translation service for DH. Milk is 'muh' :)
