Is there an 'extended' breastfeeding support thread?

Or would I be better off on LLL?

Just read the 'school-age children' thread with interest but didn't want to derail :)

dd is 1 today so it's not 'extended' bf by any normal definition but judging by the number of 'Are you going to carry on breastfeeding her?' (yes because otherwise she'll be composed primarily of grapes) conversations I've had inflicted on me in the last week I think I'm going to need all the support I can get Grin

so proud we made it this far - ha ha!

Hi all,

Read a few pages here, and glad to see so many like-minded people here. I have fed all three of my LOs til they were at least 2, and have now got to the point with my youngest that I would like to wean her off the boob completely. She is missing out staying with her Dad because she still has night-time boob, and me and my partner are going to start ttc soon, and I don't really fancy combining feeding with pregnancy (I'm an icky preggo; very sick and tired).
The thing is; she doesn't want to stop (she's 2yrs, 2 months). We've talked about staying at Daddy's and she's really keen (her Big sister and brother go for the weekend every fortnight) and I feel like a bad mother keeping her away from him by not weaning her.
I WANT to wean her now. I'M ready, but I'm not sure she is! With the two elder kids, I had to be very firm; they've all been boob lovers, but I seemed to manage it by riding the tantrums and wearing high neck clothes! Any suggestions? I think I'm just being a wuss to be honest! Thanks!

Thanks Harverina, maybe we should try cups of milk to break the mummy association. Have had some really bad nights this week. Don'tbeat yourself up about working - 13 months feeding in the day is really good going, your dd is lucky.

purcellfan · 07/07/2011 13:44

Took me so long to post that I didn't see the last two posts - re public feeding, managed to more or less stop around 18 mths using distractions, and now can say milk later to ds and he seems to understand. Occasionally feed him when out if he's very tired/ill but no one has ever commented, often people think he's just having a cuddle. Weaning - festiemum I know how you feel, ds is almost two and I'm proud to have fed him this long but hoping we can wean soon!

harverina · 07/07/2011 22:24

I actually wouldn't mind feeding my dd in public but she has no interest in feeding during the day now :( I offer occasionally if I think that she is tired etc and she will maybe latch on for a few seconds then want down! So I always offer drinksin cups now during the day. My DD loves water and soya milk (she is allergic to dairy) so I suppose thats a plus.

Last night my DD fed for a while on both boobs but tonight she wasnt really interested. She was a little unsettled and latched on but barely sucked, then fell asleep Confused...last night my DH was out and tonight he was in so I think that there is a link...she obviously knows that when her daddy is in she can get a cup of soya!!! Maybe I should take the hint? Then again some nights she is so keen!

Hi everyone, I'm a daftie - this thread had disappeared from my 'Threads you're on' page, but that's because I hadn't posted on it for a while, not because no-one else had Grin. Aw, I was a bit Sad that it had gone quiet.

I think I'd like a soft structured carrier for DS - he's 10 months, and weighs ~10kg. I've looked online, and feel a bit drawn to an Ergo or a Papatum. Does anyone have any experience of these? I have a Baby Bjorn (Classic I think), but I never particularly liked it (and he nearly exceeds the weight limit now anyway).

TheRealMBJ · 10/07/2011 09:50

Achtung I have a friend who LOVES her Ergo and I have just bought a Rose and Rebellion carrier for when DD arrives. Haven't really been able to try it out as my bump is too big Grin

KD0706 · 10/07/2011 14:41

Hi all. Hope everybody is having a good weekend. I have exciting news and nobody else to share with so thought I would share with you all - I got AF today!
I am v excited as I had a hard time conceiving DD as I came off the pill and didn't have any periods at all. A year later, without any periods, I felt icky, did a pregnancy test and it turned out I was pregnant with DD.

So this is my first natural AF since I went on the pill when I was 17 years old.

DD started sleeping through the night (with the odd exception) about a month ago, and over the past couple of weeks seemed to have been reducing her daytime feeds, maybe not the amount of feeds, but certainly the duration - she just popped on for a quick feed and then came off without taking much.

TheRealMBJ · 10/07/2011 16:22

Smile Yay KD

AchtungBaby · 10/07/2011 20:26

Thanks, TheRealMBJ, that's reassuring - I ordered an Ergo Performance first thing this morning! Arg, I can't wait for it to arrive Grin. The Rose and Rebellion carriers are lovely, which one did you choose?

And it's good to hear your exciting news, KD0706!

Cosmosis · 12/07/2011 22:10

I went down to stay with my dad and my stepmother has started making comments about me "still" bf. He's only 10m! She bf her 2 for 9m, so obv thinks anything longer is "too long" - and she has a bizarre theory that bfing made her teeth crap. So as my visit coincided with some major dental work, I got told I would face the same. I just ignore, but what on earth is she going to be like this time next year???? just wanted a moan Grin

mawbroon · 12/07/2011 22:49

I have an ergo and use it every day. I don't even have a buggy any more, I gave it to my sister to use!

I bought the ergo when ds2 was around 2yo and used it til he stopped needing the ocassional carry aged around 3.5yo, then I used it with the insert when ds2 was born and we are still using it now at 16months, both on the front and back. He will still feed in it on the go if need be, but it's easier now to carry him on my back.

I got AF last week for the first time since May 2009 too!! I knew I was ovulating and thought it was about time to think about contraception, but then started AF 4 days later, so I reckon the chances of getting pg with a 4 day luteal phase are slim to none. Well, actually, I know that they are in fact zero....

mawbroon · 12/07/2011 22:51

oops. I meant that i bought my ergo when ds1 was around 2yo

AchtungBaby · 13/07/2011 08:24

Oh, Cosmosis, that's a shame Sad. You could ask her what she thinks your DS is supposed to drink until he's a year old, but that argument is more difficult to make after a year, since cow's milk is 'fine' then. Although as they still need milk, you could try an incredulous 'Do you think that milk from a different species would be better for him?'. Grin, I'm just thinking aloud so that I have all of my arguments ready!

mawbroon, Grin at you loving your Ergo so much that you gave away your buggy! I hope that I get on as well with mine.

NasalCoffeeEnema · 13/07/2011 09:09

Can I join ds is 2,3 and hasn't been convinced that stopping is a good idea.

I'm getting to the point wher I am a bit fed up. With four children I've spent a lot of the last few years feeding and feel stretched.

He twiddles too and I have to resist the urge not to swat him away

EauRouge · 13/07/2011 09:14

Ooh, my friend's got an ergo and it looks brilliant. No way can I afford one though, even the second hand ones on ebay are too expensive. My budget can just about stretch to making my own woven wrap (though it'll have to wait until payday!). I still use my buggy all the time, it's a handy place to put my shopping bags Grin

Cosmosis, sorry to hear about your MiL. It must be so tough to not have support from family. I don't know what I'd do if my close family were disapproving, I really admire you for carrying on regardless!

AchtungBaby · 13/07/2011 13:36

Grin at your name, NasalCoffeeEnema. And about you feeling a bit fed up with BFing - are you planning to let DS self-wean? What age did your other DC stop BFing?

EauRouge, I'm impressed and a little Envy about your woven wrap-making skills. And you're right, Ergos are really expensive (although I got 2x 10% off, and no P+P, so £83.61 in the end); I'm trying to justify it to myself by thinking about how useful it will be for both DH and I, and how it might be used again in the future. Also, I'm going to sell my Baby Bjorn carrier cover to offset the cost a little.

AchtungBaby · 13/07/2011 13:38

Oops, I meant carrier + cover.

mawbroon · 13/07/2011 17:17

they are expensive, yes, but I got mine before they were outrageously dear. it was around 60quid IIRC, but i see they are way over a hundred now Shock.

but given all the use mine has had, I think 60 was a bargain!

EauRouge · 13/07/2011 17:40

Skills? Grin Nah, it's just hemming a big piece of fabric. Even I can't screw that up much. There are instructions here

TheRealMBJ · 13/07/2011 19:01

OVER £100!!!!!! Shock Wow. That is dear. My R&R cost £75 a couple of months ago and I thought that was expensive. I also have a moby wrap which I used almost non-stop until DS was 5months-ish. (Had very little use out of the expensive carry-cot bit of my pushchair. And won't be using it this time around as I've decided to have DD in moby/carrier until DS is completely out of the pushchair.

AchtungBaby · 14/07/2011 18:16

My Ergo arrived! I've only tried it 3x on my front so far, but I really like it. Now I need to figure out how to wear it on my back Grin...

EauRouge, thanks for the link - I'm starting to really like the idea of having a stretchy wrap and now just need to have DC2 to put in it. I like your plan, TheRealMBJ.

AngelDog · 14/07/2011 22:04

My Ergo was £40 from someone on the Natural Mamas forum but it needs rehoming now as I've got a toddler Patapum which I like much better - and only cost £30 from Ebay. (DS is 18 m.o.)

AchtungBaby · 14/07/2011 22:10

I considered a toddler Patapum for ages Grin.

TheRealMBJ · 14/07/2011 22:18

I love, love, love my Moby. It was so wonderfully useful, and the stretchy jersey fabric pulled DS close and made me feel a little like I had a womb on the outside when he was a little newborn.

We were snowed in the day after he was born for 4 weeks and we took him for magical, White, snowy walks in his moby against my chest with my coat over him. I could feel his tiny little breaths on my chest and reassured me that he was still alive Grin

Can you tell I'm pregnant?

AngelDog · 15/07/2011 00:51
