Bottle Feeding Advice Needed.....

JessicaandRebeccasmummy · 27/10/2005 20:17

Rebecca is 3 days old and is bottle feeding.

She is only taking 1-2oz every 3 hours and is being quite sick - not after every feed but probably every other.

Spoke to MW today who put the sick down to mucus in her tummy following birth, and isnt concerned, but im worrying!

She is never going to put on weight at this rate.... Jessica always took 3-4oz from day 1 so this is all a bit new..... am i worrying over nothing? Should i try and offer more feeds?

Rebecca isnt "asking" for the feeds either really, im just going by times and giving them and she takes them..... oh god im a bad mummy already!

The colostrum theory makes sense to me too. Again, not got first hand experience though. How's the rest of being a mummy again treating you?

misdee · 27/10/2005 20:34

dd1 used to take about 2oz at a time only. it took her ages to get to 4oz.

flamebat · 27/10/2005 20:36

looks like Jess was just into her food then

JessicaandRebeccasmummy · 27/10/2005 20:37

Everything else is fine.... and unfortunately, no, BF didnt happen YET again - my body/babies must hate me!

Me and the MW tried for nearly an hour to get Rebecca latched on but she just wasnt having any of it, and it didnt get any better.

Feel quite annoyed with myself over the BF thing but i guess i had high expectations after it not happening with Jess.

Wish I had some advice. Is it that she doesn't latch on properly, or you don't produce? (Sorry just interested, and it will bump the thread if nothing else )

JessicaandRebeccasmummy · 27/10/2005 21:24

last time was because i didnt produce, this time is because Rebecca wont latch - i cant win!

If you still want to do it, you could try ringing a breastfeeding helpline, JARM - midwives don't always know as much as BFCs about bfeeding.

But don't beat yourself up about it - the important thing is you have a gorgeous new DD and Jess is a big sister!

flamebat · 27/10/2005 21:25

Awww... can't be nice feeling. Huge hugs coming your way, even though they can't help!!!

compo · 27/10/2005 21:25

and your hospital might have a breast feeding counsellor

JessicaandRebeccasmummy · 27/10/2005 21:27

is it not a bit late now? She has been on bottles since tuesday night

JARM i had probs with linus not latching. they wouldn't let me out of hospital for 4 days until i had it sorted!!! anyway 10 days later he decided he did want to do it and we went on to b/f very successfully!

anyway, in the first few days he took no more than 30-40ml (around an ounce) and by a week old was only taking about 70ml....

so it sounds like she is doing absolutely fine!

compo · 27/10/2005 21:28

well I would have thought your milk might not have come in, and if it has would still be there. Are your breats really full and painful (sorry if asking too much!!)

startingtobehalloweenylover · 27/10/2005 21:28

jarm get expressing! seriously it CAN be done...

flamebat · 27/10/2005 21:29

You can be made to produce again for aaaaaages after stopping too... I'm with the others on getting expressing.

alittlebitscary · 27/10/2005 21:30

all babies are different jarm, honest!!! I'm fully execting a shock next time (when we get round to no 2) cos my jessica was hooooooge and guzzled (ended up mixed feeding her, partly pain and stress partly she was such a guzzler she was so hungry).

I know friend's babies who have been having what Rebecca has, and it is just a matter of time... don't forget what a tiny tummy she has!!

don't beat yourself up over it -you tried to bf, and it didn;t work out (have you thought of expressing at least for a few weeks, if that would help, ie she;'d be getting mummy's milk but from her preferred vessel lol). rebecca won't suffer in her life. honest.

(hugs)

startingtobehalloweenylover · 27/10/2005 21:31

if you really want to do it then hire a medela pump... hospital grade one, your local NC branch may hire them out (ours does)... it's DEFINITELY worth the money

and don't get disheartened when you only express 3ml to start with! that's all i managed but within a week had it up to 70ml!

laurenholly · 27/10/2005 21:34

my dd2 was the same she didnt take much milk about 1-2oz thats all
i know its worrying she also lost alot of weight in the first few day she was born at 7lb and 7oz she went down to 7lb 3oz and took awhile she gain any weights even the mw was abit worried but after a while she was ok

so i wouldnt worry to much i know you can help not to worry

startingtobehalloweenylover · 27/10/2005 21:36

oh yeah and what formula are you using? aptimil and farleys both made ds really sick...

we ended up using cow and gate organic, the only one that didn't make him puke or get constipation! blimmin child

QueenVictoria · 27/10/2005 21:36

OH JARM! I feel for you. Its just as worrying 2nd time round as it is the first isnt it. You just dont expect it to be because you have done it before. If you want to atttempt b/f again i think you still can (my DS was a nightmare at b/f and bottles but after a few weeks he was much better and has been exclusively b/f as he liked bottles even less - i cant get him off me now and he is 6 mths). But you must do whatever you feel comfortable with. It can be up to 5 days for milk to come in with b/f so i would give her a few more days.

alittlebitscary · 27/10/2005 21:37

stbhy -70 oz? wow!!!! I used the wrong pump for sure. next time i'll get that one, so many ppl rave!!!

hunkerpumpkin · 27/10/2005 21:37

Definitely not too late, JARM - some people relactate after three months!

But you do need support from someone who knows what they're doing - the NCT helpline's open until 10pm and the number is 0870 444 8707. There are other support lines too - will have a look for the numbers for you and post them.

QueenVictoria · 27/10/2005 21:38

a few more days before you start worrying

i tailed off too early - sorry!
