AIBU to not want to send my child (of a mixed heritage) to a childminder with a name that is very similar to something offensive (GW). It’s come up when searching and is the closest to my work but I can’t even contemplate contacting them as it’s too close to the name of an offensive item ?

You’re being a snowflake, sorry.

Putoffalot · 08/01/2025 20:51

I know that it’s not the same word it just makes me feel really uncomfortable

Oh. If it’s pollywoggle YABU

Hard to know without knowing what the term is.

Eventually you get used to people’s name just being their name, rather than the thing it initially sounds like/reminds you of. You may even come up with a nickname to avoid the offensive reference altogether.

Im dying to know what this person could possibly be called that’s offensive though. Barbara Bumbaclart? Ruth Dildo? Sarah Titwank? Moira Shoesinside?

Moira Shoesinside killed me 🤣🤣

How do you manage with Scunthorpe, OP?

WhoKnewWho · 08/01/2025 20:51

OP. Come over to blackmumsnetters and post this in there 💐

Growlybear83 · 08/01/2025 20:51

Surely this is a wind up? No-one could possibly be so ridiculous.

ItsCalledAConversation · 08/01/2025 20:52

Oh I was so wishing for a childminder called Barbara Bumbaclart. I can understand not being comfortable with anything incorporating the syllable “wog” to be fair, it’s a horrible racial slur.

CombatBarbie · 08/01/2025 20:52

Pollywogs???? Just after goggling another name for tadpoles. To me, tadpoles are babies so the name is just a synonym?

I know that it’s not the same word it just makes me feel really uncomfortable

Don't send your child there then. Easy, isn't it!

GuineaPigWig · 08/01/2025 20:52

Some people find the term ‘snowflake’ offensive but anyway.

And you can use the word Golliwog in a discussion about what might be offensive.

Your general communication of this thread make me think you YABU, in the absence in relevant information

Silvertulips · 08/01/2025 20:52

Polliwogs

Seems like a popular choice for little kids play centre and nurseries.

I think you are too busy being offended to even call let alone look and see if your child would be happy there.

RaininSummer · 08/01/2025 20:52

It is an actual word and they may not have linked it with GW as you are referring to it as. It's quite cute I think but I didn't make that link. Word is pollywog btw meaning tadpole

Putoffalot · 08/01/2025 20:52

fairydustt · 08/01/2025 20:51

You’re being a snowflake, sorry.

I probably am I just saw it and felt that instant feeling of ‘oh no’ and then immediately thought what if a child mispronounced it as children do, or just the end part of the word I just felt so uncomfortable and thought well I can’t even ask if they have spaces

That's a you problem! It's ridiculous to say one is like the other.

chakrakkhan · 08/01/2025 20:52

CanadianHobbit · 08/01/2025 20:53

Pollywog is a well known term for a tadpole. There is nothing racist about it.
Do you avoid all words that rhyme with racist words?
You are being ridiculous.

Upstartled · 08/01/2025 20:53

Polliwog - meaning tadpole, etymology (head) (wiggle)?

ilovesooty · 08/01/2025 20:53

You feel how you feel. I loathe the term snowflake and I feel how I feel about it.

Putoffalot · 08/01/2025 20:53

It’s hard to explain it’s just that instant feeling you get ?

Everybody typed faster than me!

Hedjwitch · 08/01/2025 20:54

Another lovely old word for tadpoles is porriwiggles.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 08/01/2025 20:54

Is it Pollywog? You don’t have to say but personally I think it’s a terrible choice of name, very insensitive, and can see why you would want to avoid it.

Justcallmebebes · 08/01/2025 20:54

If it's polliwoggle then you're being a bit precious as it's just another name for tadpole. However, I think if it were me, I would have named it Tadpoles instead
