Not even unbelievable. Very believable.

Racist Britons at their finest

@PatricksRum

You can't screen shot, because you haven't seen a comment that says it 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm not denying there are comments saying 'I'll cancel my license'. You have read into that it's because the bbc have cast a black actor, no one at all has said that in the comments that I have read.

People cancel their tv license for all manor of reasons. You see those comments on any DM story which mentioned the bbc.

Christ, the hoops you will jump through to undermine someone's own feelings are quite impressive. Presumably you are not perpetually belittled, harassed or oppressed and could probably stand to just let POC say how they experience things?

daisyjgrey · 09/05/2022 13:16

I dont think its rascist to want a character that's been typically white to stay white.

Dr Who is a time travelling alien from planet Gallifrey. I think it's a stretch to assume that all aliens on Gallifrey are typically white.

daisyjgrey · 09/05/2022 13:19

Dbank · 09/05/2022 12:45

The irony is the title of this post is racist.

What would you think if you read a headline in the paper that said "Black people are at it again".?

Reverse oppression does not exist. The oppressed cannot oppress.

Dbank · 09/05/2022 13:20

Grouping people together and making assumptions based on the colour of their skin isn't racist?

I agree it would be a stretch to assume ALL people on a fictional planet are white. But I was talking very specifically about this one character.

I also said it was odd that people are getting upset about changes to a character that changes fairly often .

I just dont think its purely about race as I've said there was similar comments when the character went from male to female .

Aye, and people would have recognised those comments for what they were (sexist), not be arguing the toss, to try and say that they weren't. When it is about racism, suddenly some people are wilfully blind. Funny that.

Agrudge · 09/05/2022 14:09

I also dont think it sexist to keep a typically male character male.

PatricksRum · 09/05/2022 14:16

Agrudge · 09/05/2022 11:58

No it isnt it's just as valid as any one elses .

Just because is differs from yours doesnt mean im wrong. Doesnt mean I'm right either .

Enjoy the rest of your day

If you're not part of the community experiencing racism then your opinion on whether someone is experiencing racism or not is meaningless.

It isn't racist. I'm not white. I'm black. I cannot be racist to a white person.

The comments on the article have pretty much said that hence the post.

you can be racist and many black people would agree black people can be racist to white people. Dont believe the hype . I dont think you are being racist with the title of this post . Devicive definitely.

I'm going to bow out now unless mentioned .

The thread is getting derailed. And that wasnt my plan, I was just giving my opinion

Shut the door on your way out and don't return unless you decide to be respectful.

Having a different opinion isnt disrespectful.

Twisting what people say probably is though.
Just for clarification that wasnt aimed at you

Besttobe8001 · 09/05/2022 15:46

OP I'm sorry this thread has turned out like this. Just goes to show the point really. My heart sank a bit when I saw the new appointment as I knew what the reaction would be, just as it did when I saw those footballers miss penalities in the world cup.

Comments on the BBC announcement of it like "here's a bet that the next doctor will be in a wheelchair" etc

PatricksRum · 09/05/2022 16:11

You know what's sad?

I campaigned and put so many hours into getting black people our own section on mumsnet.

There was immediate backlash.

Now I've fought for our own space I'm getting white people coming into our safe space telling me that what I'm experiencing isn't racism.

So disheartening.

When I campaigned for this section I welcomed everyone over as this is our safe space to share but I've created a thread about our experience as black people in a black section of an app and people have so much white privilege that they feel they have to make themselves the subject and claim they are the ones experiencing racism.

Omg what awful comments. 😭 Majority of the people don't even watch the BBC let alone Doctor Who.

Thank you for your kind comments. If anything can come from this thread it's further highlighting.

That's why I stuck my quote in as a reminder.

It seems any thread you post in this section you have to openly tell white people to stay away and that their comments are not welcome.

It works for some threads but not for others.

Even when people state things like I'm looking for black people's opinions, I want my child to be surrounded by children who look like her, etc. The squatters still refuse to back off.

I dont think its rascist to want a character that's been typically white to stay white.
The same as if a character that was typically black, there would be complaints if that characters race was changed.

There was similar outcry when when they made the character a female. I personally agree the sex shouldnt change of a character. That's just my opinion.

Same argument for the 007 character, it should alway be a male no matter what race he is. Again personal opinion but I think Idris Elba would be great in the role

Some people just dont like change . Which is a bit odd when it's about a character that periodically changes appearance

It's racist. And people complained when it was a woman because many people are also misogynistic.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 09/05/2022 17:22

I also wanted to say I'm so sorry OP the thread has turned out as it has. I have now read a fair few of the comments on the article, and while there positive ones and a few from people who don't like the recent Dr Who storylines in general, there are so many with the words "woke", "wokery", "wokeness", saying what a joke, and that the BBC is trying too hard to be "right on". These are so obviously racist in origin, I don't know how anyone can try to deny it. What exactly do people on here denying it's racism think they're referring to?

I'm white, so obviously don't know how racism feels and I'm sure there are some things which happen I might not always immediately realise are racist, but in this case it seems so obvious. And even if it isn't obvious to some, if a black person says it's racism, people should accept that it is.

It's the same old story every day @PatricksRum and nothing will change until MNHQ pull their finger out and do something about it.

BeachBonfire · 09/05/2022 21:52

I knew as soon as this was announced, what the daily mail comments would read like. And again, I knew when I saw this thread, that many posters would be the deny, minimise and justify types of those shitty racist and homophobic comments.

I think the title of this thread is fine. I’m white and don’t take offence, I know it doesn’t apply to me, as I’m not a racist idiot moaning about this. Like the good men feel no need to say ‘not all men’, it goes without saying.

I’m very pleased that @PatricksRum has posted about it, including the thread title, and that her campaigning for a black mumsnetters topic was successful in the first place to discuss it. Just a shame that again, as so very often happens, the space isn’t actually a safe one, it’s just another place for others to tell black people that they’re not experiencing/witnessing racism.

Anyway, Ncuti was great in Sex Education and I’m looking forward to watching him as the new Doctor Who. How sad that he will no doubt be only too aware of comments like those on the daily mail. And also sad that no doubt he will have dealt with these racist and homophobic attitudes his whole life, after escaping genocide as a young child. Hopefully his success will keep growing.

CrazyFishLady · 10/05/2022 14:20

It isn't racist. I'm not white. I'm black. I cannot be racist to a white person.

That definitely isn’t true.

Anyway, I agree that a lot of the daily mail comments are rooted in racism.

I also think some people do have a legitimate point about ‘classic’ franchises being altered, sometimes dramatically (I read something about the doctors entire backstory being changed last season, that’s not going to feel good for long time fans).

I personally think it would be better for new brands of stories, tv shows and movies to be created FOR black people and everyone who needs more representation, rather than just a revised (usually crapper) version of everything that has been before. Like the aforementioned and excellent ‘Sex education’.

autienotnaughty · 10/05/2022 15:30

@CrazyFishLady racism is the discrimination of a minority person or group based on their race. White people are not a minority group. Therefore white people do not experience racism.
