Victoria’s Secret ‘Karen’

I came across this today and I am in awe at this lady who tried to attack a black woman thrice but upon realising she was being filmed put on the display of her life.

While it is funny, it is no laughing matter as black people have been killed for less. Even while she’s clearly being the aggressor, people are telling the black woman to stop filming and move away from her including the mall security and police.

Sorry!!! I don't know why I do this. I think it's partly to practice writing, partly to crystallise my own thoughts against arguments, partly because I hope someone might actually change their mind about something, and partly as a form of mild self-harm Grin

Wroxie · 30/07/2021 11:01

(that was for @EchoNan sorry)
@Branleuse this will be relevant for you - www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/30/why-im-no-longer-talking-to-white-people-about-race

There is a book of the same name linked to at the end.
thanks, yeah, i just didnt see it was BMN when i was scrolling. I just thought id say what i wrote when i looked into the case, as the video only shows the attack, but backing out now. I get that its likely as hard to talk to white people about race properly in the same way as men never truly understand feminist issues. Gonna read the article now. thankyou

EchoNan · 30/07/2021 11:13

@Branleuse

it seems like the black woman had been browsing the underwear selection and then the white woman had come up and browsing super close, so the black woman asked her to back up and give some space, which is what sent the white woman into some weird rage and do all this crap. Its incredible. Im sorry I feel like im gatecrashing as im only here as i saw it in active conversations and didnt realise the board when i first posted, but does this sort of shit happen in the UK too, or is this sort of conflict a violently american phenomenon?
It does happen in the UK too. Not in shops, in my own experience, but tears and accusations of bullying and hysteria, when called out on behaviour in work.

I was their senior, in management terms, in those circumstances and it was around some serious fiddling of worktime and expenses I'd discovered.

It certainly is a type of behaviour.

Tawny still not reading the thread properly.
Just here to derail really.
Take it up with MNHQ

Ozanj · 30/07/2021 11:25

Tears only seem to work for white women.

Wroxie · 30/07/2021 11:30

From now on I'm going to tell people who blunder into Black spaces to ignore the reality of racism and lecture Black women about the hurt feelings of white women who don't like the K-word to "stop being a Tawny"

😹

TawnyPipit · 30/07/2021 11:30

Confused
EchoNan · 30/07/2021 11:32

Someone, now claiming to have black in the family, has a first post on BMN objecting to a thread about an abusive white woman being caught out on camera?

Hmm
TawnyPipit · 30/07/2021 11:37

No, I'm clearly objecting to the use of the word Karen.

HowToMurderYourLife · 30/07/2021 11:39

I am white and apologise for invading your space but was shocked by that video.

I don’t like Karen thing as I am seeing it increasingly used as a gotcha against any women, including black women, who dare to have an opinion by normally white men. But at the same time that kind of person would find another insult to use against women and It is not my place to police black peoples language, if it works for you then that is your prerogative. A better discussion might be about language being subverted but it would be impossible due to the “straight white people are the most oppressed” brigade. Generally I think if a discussion surrounding race makes me feel uncomfortable I should ruminate on why rather than trying to shut people up.

But that woman in the video certainly deserves the moniker! I expect more of my toddler and she is at the totally unreasonable stage. Absolutely disgusting that staff didn’t get involved.

What really makes me angry is the idea that the black woman must be in some way responsible for the situation. If the roles were reversed no one would be saying there is two sides to every story. All the people that like to scream that not all men/white women/add as appropriate are like that never seem to extend the same courtesy to black women do they?

It’s a pattern on these threads isn’t it. Someone comes on, tells black women where they’re going wrong, tries to police their language etc.... they get called out for the racist behaviour they’re exhibiting ...and then suddenly their black relatives/friend/neighbours get introduced...so ‘they can’t be racist’....followed by more policing of language and advice on how to behave. These posters often don’t have much posting history, soon disappear..... only for another to pop up soon after. Hmm

Nicely handled by EchoNan and Wroxie. Wink

You really are having trouble reading this thread properly aren't you? You are inventing your own narrative here.

Your dog whistles aren't working, because, lurkers who CAN read a whole thread, can see what you are doing here. Abigail type behaviour.

If you think something breaks guidelines report it.
It's not a difficult thing to understand.

Don't flounce all over a Black safe space frothing at the mouth playing the injured party. We see you.

@SupermanWithTheGreyHair

Glad you can see what the thread is about, appreciate your observations.Smile

Cookofcastamar · 30/07/2021 11:58

The video is absolutely shocking!
It's funny how people think having a mixed race family gives them a free pass to say anything. I had to correct someone calling black hair 'nappy hair' because her friend is married to a black man and that is what she calls their mixed race kids hair! Like Wtaf!!!

foxandbee · 30/07/2021 12:30

I wonder how many times that woman has got away with abusing black people before? I bet this is not the first time she has done this sort of thing. Her melt down is total theatre. The laying of the head on the bag...

MagentaRocks · 30/07/2021 13:05

I have black friends. It doesn’t mean I have any idea of what they have to put up with on a daily basis. I can abhor racism etc but I will never know what it is like to deal with it.

That video was difficult to watch, the white woman is clearly distressed, however this is one incident in her life. The lady filming has no doubt had to put up with this crap on a regular basis. Just the reaction of security and other people that were there was awful, and I think we all know if it had been the other way round and it had been the black lady going for the white lady and acting like that the outcome would have been very different.

TawnyPipit · 30/07/2021 13:18

That's the difference between having friends and living with family

I found the filming of a clearly very distressed - possibly mentally ill - woman disturbing. It went on too long and I would question the motives of the woman filming.

I did say it was difficult to watch but questioning the motives of the lady filming. I expect she kept filming so she had proof of what was happening and couldn’t be accused of anything as so often happens. Maybe the lady filming had enough of the crap she puts up with on a regular basis solely based on her skin colour.
HowToMurderYourLife · 30/07/2021 13:27

“ I found the filming of a clearly very distressed - possibly mentally ill - woman disturbing. It went on too long and I would question the motives of the woman filming.”

Mentally ill or not if the exchange wasn’t filmed the black woman would have likely found herself arrested due to the behaviour of the white woman. If it was me I would have damn well kept that camera running, my liberty isn’t worth more than her feelings, especially when she started it.

Personally I think the white woman was too controlled. She was trying to invoke sympathy and it has worked on you. It also seemed to work on the police officers until the evidence showed otherwise!

HowToMurderYourLife · 30/07/2021 13:28

Sorry got that mixed up, her feelings aren’t worth more than my Liberty that should say!

Cookofcastamar · 30/07/2021 13:28

If she hadn't tried to attack the black lady she wouldn't have been filmed. So regardless of what is wrong with her the black lady was absolutely in the right for continuing to film her.

Cookofcastamar · 30/07/2021 13:30

@HowToMurderYourLife from the sounds of it even when shown the evidence the police didn't take the necessary steps to remove the woman from the shop or even charge her.
