Best lotion for dry black skin

Now that the sun is out I feel like I need to up my game with body lotion. I currently use Body Butters from the Body Shop and they're pretty good but my shins still feel a bit dry. What do you use to get proper glowing skin? I'm not confident about going down the route of mixing up my own ingredients

Neutrogena Hydroboost body gel cream (blue bottle) is light, includes hyaluronic acid and is highly moisturising. Keeps my skin moisturised for hours.

debbrianna · 31/05/2021 08:18

Neavea especially the blue one in the bottle. There is a white bottle one with a blue top (dd uses this after swimming becuase it's the best we have found)
Dove with dry skin written on.
And super drug has it's own brand. They do the normal skin and for extra dry skin. The extra dry skin is a lot harder to find.

bunburyscucumbersandwich · 31/05/2021 08:23

Aveeno is the only thing that works on my super dry skin. I've recently discovered palmers (the one in the jar) and it's good for an all round moisturiser, but aveeno is the best on my legs.

Starseeking · 31/05/2021 08:45

I've always used Palmer's Cocoa Butter, the one that comes in solid form in a pot, and not the lotion.

PompomDahlia · 31/05/2021 23:10

Fab replies, thanks everyone.

@Starseeking I've tried the Palmers in the tub but feel like it doesn't really sink in enough if that makes sense. Shame as I love the smell!

I'd seen the Neutrogena lotion and not really given it much thought because I tend to think buttery lotions will be more moisturising but I will give it a try.

The hyaluronic acid penetrates your skin, is hydrating and more moisturising than the heavy butters. I only discovered this last year and it's made a huge difference to my skincare regime. I'm never going back to those heavy pore clogging butters

Interesting about hyaluronic. I am going to Google some. During lockdown I was using light oils becuase I didn't have the energy. If something better exist I will try it. Thank you 😊

Astral it's in a lighg blue tub. You can buy it from Boots or superdrug. Or if you have a ethnic market shop they should sell it.

Best cream ever I don't think I've found a better one yet.

EchoNan · 23/07/2021 20:48

My own grandmother used Astral. She swore by it.
I'd forgotten @Ju11tne until I saw your post.

Then I thought, surely it's not the same one? I just did an internet search. Astral came out in 1952, and the recipe has never been changed! Wow!
I must buy some.

Ju11tne · 24/07/2021 08:13

My mum used it for me as a child it seems the exact same. Also coco butter the hard one in the tub do they still sell it like that? I've not come across that in years!

debbrianna · 24/07/2021 08:30

My cousin lives by astral. She has the best skin in the family. I would have put down to her genes but who knows. She is almost 50 has used it for as long as i can remember.

Orchidflower1 · 24/07/2021 10:17

@debbrianna I looooooove astral I’ve run out out the moment but got a new pot coming in the shopping next week. It’s like magic in a blue pot!

@PompomDahlia As you can see from my reply to Deb I’m a big Astral fan. I have MR skin and I’m also a lover of Superdrug vitamin E. I get weirdly dry shins, elbows, hands and forearms. Whilst the astral is amazing for my top half ( also use it on face) I find the vitamin E better for lower half. It comes in a MASSIVE tub and is reasonable price wise.

Also with the Astral, I sometimes put a bit on the ends of my hair like a hair mask. Thank you Dad’s family for my unique hair which is oddly greasy yet dry on the end. Hmm

KittenKong · 24/07/2021 10:21

My family swear by Aveeno - some of the kids have horrible eczema too and the doctor has prescribed it for them. I buy the big bottles when it’s on special offer.

I’m like a lizard and the blue version works well for my skin.

EchoNan · 24/07/2021 10:21

@Orchidflower1 I never thought about using it on hair ends, good tip!

Wbeezer · 24/07/2021 10:25

If your skin is really dry you need a cream with at least 10% urea in it, most are marketed as foot cream but they are really good for any really dry skin. Lots of brands do them, eucerin, flexitol etc but there are giid cheap own brand ones in Boots and superdrug.

PompomDahlia · 24/07/2021 10:58

I took the recommendation for Neutrogena Hydroboost and have been really pleasantly surprised. It feels very light, so like it shouldn’t be very moisturising, but actually it’s kept my skin in good condition even with lots of sunbathing!

I found the Superdrug vitamin E worked well at first but left a bit of a build up. I want to give Astral a try now after reading this!

Korres do a really nice face oil and used to do a moisturiser (pepper I think it was?). Really really good and not greasy at all.

Rege · 24/07/2021 11:16

Aveeno is working magic on my skin.

debbrianna · 24/07/2021 11:57

This shock me! 😲 I have fear of putting any body cream on my hair or hair line for some reason. Two things happen, dry hair line or acne for head becuase of hair cream. Maybe this will help my hair line.

This might be a eureka moment for me and my dry hairline.

Noterook · 24/07/2021 12:13

I love the smell as well! I find aqueous cream with coconut oil added the best for my skin.
EchoNan · 24/07/2021 12:15

@KittenKong will check out Korres thank you!

@Rege Hello to you! Yes, I've found Aveeno good, it's what I usually use but running low at the moment so, might have a go with Astral and see if it is any better.

My grandmother had amazing skin also and said it was the Astral, @debrianna. She was a very quiet and gentle lady. I wish that I had pressed her for her beauty tips! I've a dry hairline also.

(The Astral is bringing back nice memories, my grandparents mostly brought me up)

Orchidflower1 · 24/07/2021 12:32

@debbrianna and @EchoNan
Let me know how you get on. I only use the smallest amount but I like it. I sometimes find my MR hair does it’s own thing. It’s really interesting as my 3 siblings and I have all got different hair ( same parents). As far as I know, my sisters don’t use it on their hair but my brother ( who has the most sensitive skin of us all) uses it after a shave. Go Astral!!

EchoNan · 24/07/2021 12:46

Will do @Orchidflower1
Maybe we should buy shares in it! I can't believe it has been going so long without change! Grin

EchoNan · 24/07/2021 12:58

@Noterook Hello to you! I can't remember the smell it's been so long. I know that it will really remind me of my grandmother when I open it!

rantymcrantface66 · 24/07/2021 13:10

Exp used to use bio oil gel. I also used it on my lizard like shins and it was amazing.
