Do you think having blonde hair automatically makes you more beautiful?

I don’t, however someone mentioned being jealous of a woman with various attributes including blonde hair. Even though I grew up in a predominantly white area, I never once envied girls with blonde hair. So is this a thing?

As a small child in the 80s I desperately wanted blonde hair - all the princesses were blonde. As an adult - not so much.

scentedgeranium · 20/11/2020 08:14

My daughter (up to about the age of 6) used to depict herself with blond hair and blue eyes when she drew herself. Her hair is dark brown. Along with her beautiful eyes. I don't get it!

Good article here that explains it.

Requinblanc · 20/11/2020 08:37

Most blondes get their hair colour from a bottle and the pop psychology in this ludicrous Guardian article is best ignored.

Giningit · 20/11/2020 09:01

Oh I know all about the whole ‘gentlemen prefer blondes’ argument but no concrete evidence for that.

Interesting topic and something I've always wondered about. I'm white but have very dark hair/eyes...growing up in the eighties I remember feeling so inferior to the blonde girls in my class. I remember a girl in our class who had long blonde hair. The teachers and parents used to fawn over her and her princess hair (vom)...I remember getting a Sindy doll who had brown hair and being absolutely overjoyed that she looked like me. As an adult now and with a beautiful mixed race dd, I often think that if I felt like that as a white child, how much harder it would have been for non white children. Even in my dds class the two most popular girls are the blonde ones...coincidence? I'm not sure.

I don't personally think blonde hair is more aesthetically pleasing anyway...i may have wished for it as a child but certainly not as an adult.

kwaziseyepatch · 20/11/2020 10:11

My mixed race DD after discovering Disney (namely frozen- I'm looking at you Elsa) has said she'd like to cut off her brown hair and put it in the bin - this was heartbreaking for us as her hair is beautiful. So I blame Disney!

It traces back to ancient Europe where highest demand for slaves bought for sex by Romans were blondes from the conquered Northern European barbarian tribes. So blonde hair became associated across the Roman Empire with a woman who is available for sex. After a few centuries of this, Rome passed a law that all prostitutes (free and slave) must also wear blonde wigs or bleach their hair blonde to be legal. This was so that a prospective customer wouldn’t confuse a respectable dark haired roman matron with a prostitute.

grool · 20/11/2020 10:31

Not for me, I've always been envious of people with really dark brown hair.

Phoenix21 · 20/11/2020 10:34

Boris Johnson is blonde.

HeatherAndSand · 20/11/2020 10:36

No. Because Boris.

CremeEggThief · 20/11/2020 10:36

I'm white, so hope people don't mind me joining
in on this, but I have always thought dark hair was far more attractive. It is the exception rather than the rule for me to find people with blonde hair more attractive, and I can only think of one or two actors who I think look better blonde than dark or red.
I was probably an adult before I realised most white people seem to value blonde hair more. I come from a family where everyone naturally has dark, curly hair.

HeatherAndSand · 20/11/2020 10:37

And Donald.

Phoenix21 · 20/11/2020 10:40

Jokes apart I think it’s a hangover from conditioning, the subliminal messages that blonde is more attractive. The aryan race ideal was blind hair and blue eyes, Ancient Rome as described above.

The ideal of the blonde princess - Disney, gentlemen prefer blondes, Marilyn Monroe - blonde bombshell.

We absorb these things then adopt them. It’s why representation is so important.

Stopitwiththefireworks · 20/11/2020 10:41

if I think of the most beautiful women I can think of none of them are actually blonde

(I’m white btw)

canigooutyet · 20/11/2020 10:41

I don't think it makes you automatically beautiful. I remember the blonde twins from school. Everyone fawned over them, they could never do anything wrong. In reality they were the school bullies.

Phoenix21 · 20/11/2020 10:43

I don’t think hair colour is a sole indicator of beauty.

I’ve never understood the hatred for ginger hair as it goes. The people I know with ginger hair tend to have really lovely strong barnets. The women anyway.

HeatherAndSand · 20/11/2020 10:51

Many a true word spoken in jest and all that.

When I think of beauty, hair colour is perhaps one of the last things I would think of, and then not at all.

Crystal90567 · 20/11/2020 10:52

I've gone through my life with times of being blonde, and times brown haired.
As a white woman there is a direct difference in how I'm treated by women and men at work and in public life, depending on my hair colour.

As a brunette I'm treated as older, more intelligent, serious, more likeable to women and less sexually attractive to men. Directly dowdyier in same outfit/ make up.
As a blonde I'm treated far worse by women, it amuses me it happens so often! The assumption is I'm dumb and impractical. I'm an engineer so I love gassumping them on this one. Also men, even pensioners, flirt more and ignore me less when I'm blond. Again everything else the same.
Blonde is worth the cost imo. £110 every 6 weeks!

TwentyViginti · 20/11/2020 11:02

So sad that Donald has changed his beautiful blond hair to grey Sad

Bibidy · 20/11/2020 11:04

I think blonde hair hides a multitude of sins - not genuinely, but it's like as soon as people see long blonde hair that person is considered attractive. No idea why as it's clearly not always true!

outofthemoon · 20/11/2020 11:08

Margaret Thatcher, Boris Johnson, the unspeakable Trump...

snowstorm2012 · 20/11/2020 11:12

I'm blonde but I think dark hair looks so much healthier and shiny, you don't tend to get shiny blonde hair in my opinion

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 20/11/2020 11:28

I'm blonde and my hair always looks dull, I find it hard to maintain too so it doesn't look that dark mucky colour blonde. It was lovely when I was younger, it was a really light blonde and I had curls but now it just looks bleurgh

formerbabe · 20/11/2020 12:14

When I think of female celebrities that I think are the most beautiful, none are blonde. Of course you can be blonde and attractive but blonde hair alone doesn't make you attractive.
