Do you think having blonde hair automatically makes you more beautiful?

I don’t, however someone mentioned being jealous of a woman with various attributes including blonde hair. Even though I grew up in a predominantly white area, I never once envied girls with blonde hair. So is this a thing?

I think times are changing with the kardashians and the likes. Especially with the racially ambiguous look being a thing now.

I see more and more blonde teens dying their hair darker to achieve the Instagram aesthetic which favours the darker look.

Bufferingkisses · 20/11/2020 12:49

I'm blonde and had people commenting on how "lovely" or "pretty" it is my whole life things like "oh you have a beautiful blonde daughter" Hmm I never got it. I'm not attractive in any way really, my dp fancies me but that's normal, objectively he would also say I'm not "pretty".

I agree that it is a historical/conditioning thing, it has always made me feel uncomfortable and, even as a small child, I wondered how it made other people feel to hear those sorts of comments. Personally I think it's yet another example of how tone deaf adults can be. It really disturbs me that young children (usually girls) are made to feel lesser or want to alter their hair because of the obsession with something so meaningless.

@PlanDeRaccordement

It traces back to ancient Europe where highest demand for slaves bought for sex by Romans were blondes from the conquered Northern European barbarian tribes. So blonde hair became associated across the Roman Empire with a woman who is available for sex. After a few centuries of this, Rome passed a law that all prostitutes (free and slave) must also wear blonde wigs or bleach their hair blonde to be legal. This was so that a prospective customer wouldn’t confuse a respectable dark haired roman matron with a prostitute.
Interesting info!

@kwaziseyepatch

My mixed race DD after discovering Disney (namely frozen- I'm looking at you Elsa) has said she'd like to cut off her brown hair and put it in the bin - this was heartbreaking for us as her hair is beautiful. So I blame Disney!
That really is so sad. Your poor DD.

I hope so @Worriedaboutcovid19

I already have Kim Kardashian to thank for popularising big bums! I used to be so self conscious now I'm proud Grin

BIWI · 21/11/2020 09:53

I think blonde (for women at least) is also used as an insult - 'blonde bimbo'. Sort of like you can be beautiful (because you're blonde) or intelligent - but not both!

PonDeReplay · 21/11/2020 10:49

I prefer the look of hair which is darker than the person’s skin (apart from white hair on an older person). So blonde hair on someone with dark skin looks a bit unnatural and therefore less attractive to me.

RedMarauder · 21/11/2020 18:12

PonDeReplay I know naturally blond/e and red head people whose skin is darker than their hair.

My own DD, who is a toddler, got blonde streaks in her hair over summer. Some people were asking whether we dyed her hair as she is mixed. Hmm A Greek friend of ours previously said he had a lifetime of these stupid comments, so as an adult in his 30s tends to cover his hair in the sun so it doesn't go blond.

In regards to whether blonde hair is automatically more attractive - nope.

One of the examples that stands out is a black girl I use to babysit. She was very pretty and mainly white adults would fall for it. She was also invited continuously to playdates and parties by all her year group regardless of their ethnicity. The black adults she was around didn't fall for it as we noticed how different girls were being treated by adults due to their looks. So a blonde mixed girl was ignored compared to this black girl by strangers. The girl was use to being ignored as she looked white, there as her sister looked more mixed, got blonde streaks in the sun and got more attention.

Readandwalk · 21/11/2020 18:19

In my early 20s I used to walk through London between tube stops for a commute. Whenever my blond colleague stayed over the whole journey was blokes ( harassing) commenting to her. Then she went brown. No comments.

Kidneybingo · 21/11/2020 18:22

90% of women over 30 all seem to have the same colour these days. Namely blondy browny streaky.

cameocat · 21/11/2020 18:32

I am white and blonde but have never thought that is what makes people more beautiful. When I was younger (specifically) the thing I wanted most was a super cool 1970's Afro. I just thought that was the coolest hair ever (and still do!) although I have now learnt that society doesn't always agree with this, I was oblivious to it then and think it's really awful that black women can be made to feel their hair is in some way inferior. I just asked my DD (age 13 and white) and she thinks being black is what makes you most beautiful.

The most naturally beautiful person I knew (my old flat mate) was half white British half West Indian.

What I'm trying to say is beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

To hide the grey.
LemonBar · 21/11/2020 20:22

I grew up with blondeness meaning beauty..pale skin, blue eyes or green and blonde hair, Thin, busty, small peachy bum and slender cellulite free thighs were coveted traits. Straight hair and skinny was IT. Totally a 90s child.
As a teen I preferred pale and dark hair goth look. Then in my mid twenties i started appreciating different colourings.
I still hear men and women praising blondeness. It's still seen as the ultimate bombshell hair. Do I wish I was a blonde? Yes because it means less noticeable facial hair and bleaching my arm hair would look more convincing. I also observe that the dark haired guys tend to prefer blondes.. they like that yin and yang mix. As dark haired, i got more attention from red and blond haired men.
I mean... what is even the dark hair equivalent for blondes have more fun? I think blondes tend to look more innocent and even younger when young. When older their skin can burn and be sun damaged if not careful.

Terralee · 22/11/2020 17:50

I'm white & naturally pale with dark blonde hair that is highlighted (to hide the erm, white bits, & brighten it up!).
But I don't consider myself to be beautiful in fact I've literally just been the victim of a nasty online insult from a man I don't even know regarding my looks, on a Cat page on Facebook of all things!!
In fact I've been insulted by men in RL too quite often. So I'm under no illusions about my looks.
I don't actually know why i bother trying with my appearance...

My youngest sister is of a totally different appearance, she's mixed dark haired with olive skin & is very pretty, she's had actual racial abuse off lots of men. Which has ruined her confidence too & led to her having her hair straightened chemically which is a shame. (This is living in the South of England).

But anyway. I think there's beauty in all hair colours.

feelingverylazytoday · 22/11/2020 18:00

No, I prefer black or very dark brown hair myself. I like the 'exotic blonde' look though (as it was described on ANTM) - blonde hair, brown eyes and brown/tan skin.

itsovernowthen · 23/11/2020 21:48

It doesn't automatically make a person more beautiful, however society conditioning will have you believe so, and it starts very early on in life.

I remember being about 7 or 8 in the playground playing kiss chase (80's child). ALL the boys ran after the girl with long blonde hair to her knees. She wasn't the prettiest girl in the class, but she was the blondest, and even at that age I could see it happening, although I wouldn't have been able to articulate what it was back then.

I've never personally wanted to be blonde myself, I'm not overly keen in blonde Afro's, and as I have an Afro, I prefer my hair in its natural state.

Even these days, when you look at the wives/partners of celebrity or successful men. I say wives/partners as blonde doesn't appear to be held out as an attractive trait for men...tall, dark and handsome is the male equivalent of blonde. The vast majority of these ladies will be blonde, most likely initially attracted due to the perceptions of youth and beauty that aren't necessarily true.

It’s because it hides grey regrowth well I think. That’s why I have it anyway.

To answer the original question, I tend to prefer darker hair personally. It’s heartbreaking to hear of little girls disliking their own hair because it’s not disney princessy enough.

MillieEpple · 23/11/2020 22:05

Its not more attractive but i think it stands out as most of the world is shades of brown.

Smartiepants79 · 23/11/2020 22:06

Nope. I adore red hair and have always been attracted to dark haired men.

hellymissy · 23/11/2020 22:11

It does not make you more beautiful, however like other poster have said, society will have you believe this.

It's the same with lighter skinned black people in the black community. Many black men prefer lighter shades in many cases they're no pretty than the dark skin girl but as society makes you believe 'lighter = prettier', they are more 'desirable'.

I noticed this from a young age, as a dark skinned woman it was evident very early on I'd be on the shelf longer lol.

pinkdragons · 23/11/2020 22:19

I think it's harder to be 'beautiful' as a blonde. But easier to be pretty (in a more mediocre kind of way).

Of course it depends on the person.
I do think olive skin with golden hair is gorgeous though. Especially if it's very curly.

myhumps123 · 23/11/2020 22:23

Definitely not. Give me hair like pochahontas (sp) anyday. I just love dark silky healthy hair. You can't beat it and to me it makes the person look more attractive then someone with dyed blonde hair. Just take a look at Adriana Lima, Aishwarya Rai, Monica Belluci, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz for example, if these women dyed their hair blonde they would look no where near as beautiful. Their dark hair enhances their beauty.

myhumps123 · 23/11/2020 22:28

Have you ever watched James Bond, most of his love interests have dark hair and they are bloody sexy if I can say so myself. Halle berry, Olga kurylenko for example.

notacooldad · 23/11/2020 22:32

I've never been beautiful but I always feel better blonde.
When I've been dark I look drained and tired. Blonde always makes look and feel brighter.
