I didn't see this advert when it was live just came across this article now. I am not surprised and just sighed. The lady who commissioned it is BAME herself and says it is not offensive, but positive.

This is just why I really hate the BAME label. This woman is using her position as a minority to trivialise the message that black lives matter and simultaneously provides the excuse racists love "my friend is BAME, she's not offended when I do x, say x (usually offensive things specifically to black people).", but for something that doesn't specifically harm or target her community. Anti-blackness exists amongst other BAME themselves and is actually something I'm scared to talk about.

Am I overreacting to be put off by this advert, to be so bothered by the BAME label.

All they want to do is be controversial to sell their cars, they don't give a toss that people have this crap to put up with day after day after day.

Dastardly, I agree re the BAME label. It makes no political sense at all, just a handy shorthand for a majority to lump " and any one else we can think of" together.

Spot on Thin Slice. The system is the way it is because it benefits too many people to change. And sometimes I feel like the unspoken hierarchy that exists with black people at the bottom is actually preferred by some communities. You see it whenever something positive finally happens for black people after complaining, campaigning and raising awareness in that "black people are getting x, what about us?". Almost as if to say my community is above black people in the hierarchy, if black get x, we should get 2x so the status quo remains the same. Maybe I'm over sensitive but every single time I'm celebrating a win for black people without a doubt I always get a comment along the lines of "but what about us". Are we the struggle people? Are we the ones who have to work hard for years turning over things for us and every other minority - because at times when we are struggling and crying about something , people seem okay to just watch, until we win then everyone is now BAME or POC and we should also have included them in our right for x.

Absolutely agree with this. The words that come out of PPs mouth would be seen as racist, were a white person to say the same.

I think people don't understand that some other minorities do not always have black people's best interests at heart (and the other way around).

However, we should all have our individual ethnic identity, instead of being lumbered with others, just because they're not white, either. It's completely bonkers. It's lazy categorisation.

Following on from this thread, it got me thinking about Candace Owen. In case you haven't heard of her (you probably have), she was once a Democrat who then turned Republican (fair enough). She is an activist and has spoken at the Whitehouse a few times.

There are so many things with her that don't sit right with me. She's got a number 2 Best selling book out at the mo, but apart of me feels that she wouldn't have the celebrity if she wasn't so disparaging and patronising about the black race. It is as if she hates us

She tore into Cardi B (again, FoS), about how illiterate she was and how her music is bringing the black race down. Yet, here she is, supporting DT and telling black people how lucky they are that they live in America and not Africa (ffs). That we are all victims and we can do what we want and only we are stopping ourselves.

Don't get me wrong, I like the positive approach she has (in some respects) but I feel that it is very unrealistic. I do think she is one of these women that has forgotten, or is embarrassed, about her roots.

I just cannot take her seriously when she is talking, and even wonder whether she truly believes the things she says. It just seems sad that she has got where she has by knocking down our race. Again, she is entitled to her opinion.

I will try and find some links but would really love some others' perspectives on her.

I I can't take Candace Owens seriously. There are plenty of genuine black Republicans and Conservatives.

But Candace is so obviously a shill. You dont not swing as far right as she did from being a socialist to saying some of the vile things she does. Candace saw an opportunity for a much needed shill and took it. She got as far as she has because she was willing to say things on behalf of the powers that be that most wouldn't.

Her contacts are billionaires all of a certain kind, all eager to have a token black person on board. She's happy to be their mouthpiece because again, she's getting wealth and status out of all of this.

I was reading about Owens setting up Blexit (Black Exit based on the word Brexit) in 2018. It's aim being to encourage African Americans (plus Latinos and other minorities) to abandon the Democratic Party and register as Republicans.

That's just one of very many social media type initiatives she has set up for Trump. How she can do it knowing the extreme right and klan connections, is beyond me. I don't know how these people sleep at night, although more money than you can dream of usually helps I suppose.

Owens claimed Kanye West designed merchandise for Blexit which he denied. Apparently, he said "I never wanted any association with Blexit" and "I've been used to spread messages I don't believe in."
So even he drew back from her.

this reminds me of Gina Rodriquez and her issue with black issues and progress. She was not happy that Black Pantha the movie was made. She tried her best to shut black people up, at the same time claim her blackness for being too dark for being white Latina because her dad looks like Tom jones. (that's my take)
Funnily enough she was the highest paid acress that year. She didn't allow Yara Shahidi to say she was happy to represent black girls on screen. Gina kept on jumping in to include all girls and latinas around the world while they were doing an interview for a movie they did together.

You are right about being able to look yourself in the eye at the end of the day. My brother and I had a chat about Candace and he was saying, he gets it she found something that works and fast tracked her career, I mean noone else is going to look out for you. I said, I get it, but this goes way too far -you are selling out black people, your family, friends and your children, I asked him if he could do it and he agreed, that fair there are some things you say no to, this being one of them.

Candace has sold her soul and unfortunately is on the very wrong side of history. I'm not even against black Republicans and Conservatives. There are so many genuine arguments to be had, its valid to say black people should not consistently vote one way because you get taken for granted - both major parties are just as bad when it comes to black interests so none of them is owed your loyalty etc. But Candace - no, she is bordering on Alex Jones territory
