I didn't see this advert when it was live just came across this article now. I am not surprised and just sighed. The lady who commissioned it is BAME herself and says it is not offensive, but positive.

This is just why I really hate the BAME label. This woman is using her position as a minority to trivialise the message that black lives matter and simultaneously provides the excuse racists love "my friend is BAME, she's not offended when I do x, say x (usually offensive things specifically to black people).", but for something that doesn't specifically harm or target her community. Anti-blackness exists amongst other BAME themselves and is actually something I'm scared to talk about.

Am I overreacting to be put off by this advert, to be so bothered by the BAME label.

Following on from this thread, it got me thinking about Candace Owen. In case you haven't heard of her (you probably have), she was once a Democrat who then turned Republican (fair enough). She is an activist and has spoken at the Whitehouse a few times.

Trust me! We know her.

What I find really interesting is that she is really clever. (similar to the clever coco in dear white people).
I made the effort to listen to what her view is. Everymain point she talks about is true in regards to black issues. what separates her from everyone else is how those problems have come about. I find her answers really problematic but in line with what her followers would like to hear.
I found out presently, she is part of an American brunch called Turning Point which is a university association launched recently. \i found this out when they fired they replaced the black female representative, candance Incanate with another.

I follow David Olusoga and answered one of the tweets from Turning point making fun of a 'Black Lives Matter' protester talking about how world war II didn't need to happen.

Sometimes I wonder if People Like Candance truly believe what they are saying. Similar to the that man who appeared on ITV thi week (i would google his namebut he does not deserve a proper mention), only to find out he was teacher. I feel sorry for any black child coming through his teaching.

Banana advert is disgusting.....ewww what were they thinking

Funnily enough Gina Rodriguez is who inhad in mind when I was talking about anti-blackness. She said some very 🙄🙄🙄 comments about black Emmy winners and Latinx not being recognised completely ignoring Jharrel Jerome an Afro Latino who had been awarded an Emmy....

I've just bought David Olusoga's book "Black and British.
A forgotton history." really looking forward to a quiet weekend and getting started on it.

Fortunately I missed the teacher on the telly. My blood pressure is too high at the best of times.

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 20:42

ThinSlicePizza, I've just read up on Gina Rodriquez. It was am interesting read. I, naively, just assumed she was black.

ThinSlicePizza · 23/09/2020 20:44

I don't really frequent the main boards anymore. In fact I've been stalking this board for the last few days, as I am child-free at mo, and on leave.

Very true. I don't need the mainboard either. Every few minutes I have in the day I would rather post here.

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 20:44

EchoCardioGran, it's an amazing horror. I think you'll enjoy it 😊

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 20:49

ThinSlicePizza

For me, it's like going in to a shop and coming out with exactly what you wanted, rather than being sidelined and gaslighted, while walking up and down the aisles, getting stressed, and then ending up buying something you didn't want. Here, it's stress-free 😊

ThinSlicePizza · 23/09/2020 20:50

have you ever seen "Get Out"? Candace reminds me of that creepy housemaid in it grin

At least with the housemaid, she was not dead behind eyes. Her fake smile and crying eyes gave you hope that she was dying inside and needed help.

I'll watch when Mr. Echo's in bed. He is terrified of scary movies!

I lurk on gardening, fishnet, and a few other specialist boards.
I still look at the offers and so on.

A bit battle weary at the moment main board wise.

The children are both at school now, so more time on my hands to pop on here.

It's been a delight just calling in here. Thanks for your company. I hope that this little board grows from its modest start.

Yes, as I said earlier, her rhetoric is almost water-tight but what I find astounding is that she wouldn't be where she was today if she wasn't a) black or b) selling her soul.

I've just bought David Olusoga's book "Black and British.
A forgotten history." really looking forward to a quiet weekend and getting started on it.

He has just Publsihed a children's version from age 12+. coming out in October of Black and British A foggoten History. first Part October and then later their will be another book.

A house though time is absolutely fascinating.

it's interesting how they ignore all the black Latanx in Hollywood as if they dont exist. At the Same time, all the Black Latinas/latinos ignore their blackness until it's needed. Exibit one, Zoe Zaldana.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 23/09/2020 21:12

I will try David's book too.

I have also been lurking here a lot Echo, main board really put me off last week with people proclaiming how proud of the Empire they are and I can't even deal with that conversation right now

OP posts:
Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 23/09/2020 21:13

Dont even get me started on Zoe Saldana wearing black face and prosthetics to play Nina Simone, a woman who was proud of her features and skin tone.

I'll watch when Mr. Echo's in bed. He is terrified of scary movies!

Trust me, it's a different type of scary movie. You will notice one or two of co-workers in those people.

ThinSlicePizza · 23/09/2020 21:24

100% ^

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 21:26

I love Nina Simone, why she had to be portrayed like that.......a staunch civil rights activist.
We need a chat thread as this has wandered about a bit from the original OP.
But that's what discussions do in real life.Smile

A house through time is brilliant. Loved the Liverpool one as that's where some relatives lived back in the day.

That's why she is so useful to them. So she comes at a price, which they are willing to pay in order to keep all the poorer uppitty ones in their places.

Shill is the right word.

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 22:03

EchoCardioGran you should get a chat thread started on here 😊

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 22:04

And most of my family members (in my case) Hmm

Ablackrussian · 24/09/2020 10:44

EchoCardioGran did you watch 'Get Out'? Grin

EchoCardioGran · 24/09/2020 11:21

Not yet Ablackrussian. Watching later tonight. I got distracted watching Ebony Rainford-Brent (my hero!) commentating on a womens' cricket match Grin then fell asleep.

Ablackrussian · 24/09/2020 11:31

EchoCardioGran..I will let you off! Grin

SandyY2K · 24/09/2020 22:55

And sometimes I feel like the unspoken hierarchy that exists with black people at the bottom is actually preferred by some communities.

I agree with you on this.

I also hate the lumping together of ethnic minority groups.

PP may well have faced racial discrimination, however agree will not have had the experience or get what it's like to face the discrimination that black people face.

I remember when Matt Hancock was asked about black ministers in the cabinet and he responded that we have 2...meaning PP and the Chancellor...both Asian.
