Black Mumsnetters - a new section

150 replies

MichaelMumsnet · 16/09/2020 09:38

Hi all and welcome to the new board.

From recent discussions on the boards we realise that, as with parents of children with special needs, or parents who are LGBT - there will be sensitivities and common experiences that Black MNers will find easier to talk about in a dedicated space.

The board exists primarily for the use of black Mumsnetters. While others are of course welcome to use it, please be respectful and mindful that this is a 'safe space' for those posters. While some may be happy to answer questions on race, others may not and it's not their responsibility to educate on these issues.

Please feel free to contribute, and to invite any others who might find the board useful - and please do let us know about any ideas, suggestions or concerns that you may have.

All the best,
MNHQ

Hi @Tappering, thanks for looking in, Flowers

Quaagars · 26/09/2020 19:31

@Tappering same

Tappering · 26/09/2020 20:05

😘

PatricksRum · 29/09/2020 07:53

@Tappering

Haven't been on MN properly for a few weeks so just catching up. Really pleased to see that there is a Black MNers board now. The racism and nastiness on *@PatricksRum*'s threads asking for dedicated space was appalling.
Thank you for your kind words.

Feel free to pop along and use some recipes!

skedaddIe · 29/09/2020 22:48

I love this

wetasspword · 04/10/2020 00:01

Hmm I question why, in the attempt to be woke and left wing and inclusive do you not stop and realise that we are dividing ourselves even more by doing things like opening this section. It's like the LGBT group I completely disagree with. I don't see the point in segregating yourselves because your different and claim to be getting segregated and discriminated against already. The world is turning mental. Please keep in mind I am not a troll and I am just really extremely confused about all of this.

Quaagars · 04/10/2020 00:31

If it's not a section for you, you don't have to contribute, you know?
It was explained in the earlier threads - why shouldn't this board, and the LGBT board exist (that you also disagree with Hmm ) so people can talk about issues that affect them?
I'm white, but have absolutely no issue with this board, or the LGBT board (I'm straight) as I realise not everythings about me.

DramaAlpaca · 04/10/2020 00:36

I totally agree with what @Quaagars just said. Also white & straight and have absolutely no issue with the existence of this board or the LGBT board. They are valuable spaces on here. While I might not feel the need to post on either of them as they don't have personal relevance to me, they are very interesting to read and learn about different issues.

EchoCardioGran · 04/10/2020 01:21

wetasspword You've posted twice tonight. But never before under this name.
Your other post says that you think the word "whore" isn't sexist, and that you don't like left wing feminist snowflakes.
And you've plopped on here to tell us that you don't approve of black people talking together, neither do you like LGBT talking together.

Nobody really cares what you think. So we'll chat away regardless.

EchoCardioGran · 04/10/2020 01:24

Hi there DramaAlpacaFlowers and QuaagarsFlowers lovely to see you.

Quaagars · 04/10/2020 02:16

Exactly the same here, I love reading and learning and seeing different (for want of a better word) experiences to mine

Smile
Quaagars · 04/10/2020 02:20

The world is turning mental

Why? Because more people are getting a voice?
Whether LGBT, black? (your examples)
Why is that a bad thing?
It takes nothing away from us.

BIWI · 04/10/2020 09:55

@wetasspword

How many times does it have to be explained to the thick and ignorant that this isn't about segregation at all.

It's about a space for people who want to discuss specific issues - just like there's a board for people who keep fish, or for people who want to talk about longhaul travel or people who want to discuss the latest TV programmes.

Anyone can read and/or post in these sections (as long as they post within Talk Guidelines). So it's absolutely NOT about exclusion or segregation.

And - hey guess what?! - if you don't like it here you can always post somewhere else. Just a thought ...

itsovernowthen · 14/10/2020 10:24

Thank you for this space @MichaelMumsnet.

Why are you posting here then?

Congratulations @PatricksRum.

Venicelover · 14/10/2020 13:47

Presumably, because in common with all threads/sections on MN, it is a place to express an opinion? Is it not?

BIWI · 14/10/2020 13:47

@PhilSwagielka I don't think he/she is a genuine poster - this is the only post they have made, (In this name at least). One might think they've posted to stir things up, would one?

PhilSwagielka · 14/10/2020 13:50

It just sounds a bit weird to use the black section to complain about having a black section. It exists, it's been decided to have one, if you don't like it or LGBT sections, you don't need to post there. And I'm sick of Mumsnetters using 'woke' as an insult.

And yeah, the name does seem a bit sus.

Compey · 15/10/2020 14:39

Isn't walling off posts from or about people of colour going to be divisive in the end?

BIWI · 15/10/2020 16:57

@Compey

What on earth do you mean by 'walling off'?! It's just another section of Mumsnet, like any of the other topics, e.g. Scotsnet, Craicnet, fishnet, etc
PurpleHoodie · 15/10/2020 17:53

It's not "walled off" for goodness sake.

Sometimes I just feel so Brit/Irish and wander of mumbling "Plums. Absolute plums"

Venicelover · 16/10/2020 10:42

It is only 'walled off' if people choose to post only in this section rather than in other less 'designated' threads and areas. Is that happening?

Ablackrussian · 17/10/2020 12:50

I mainly post on here now. The issues that have been spoken about are ones I can specifically relate to.

I don't go to the main boards anymore. It doesn't mean I'm segregating myself, it just means I can get a straight forward answer (from people with similar experiences).

Venicelover · 17/10/2020 13:41

Surely there are general chat threads that interest/engage/stimulate you to offer an opinion?

If not, then the poster above may have a valid point.

BIWI · 17/10/2020 14:06

To be fair though, there are posters who only ever post in AIBU, for example.
