Hi everyone!

My husband and I recently found out on an early dating scan (like, very early, 5+ weeks) that we are expecting twins. We're being re scanned in 2 weeks time to confirm, but I'm wondering if anyone else is expecting twins. It's our first pregnancy so we're abit in awe of the thought, but wouldn't it be good to start a thread on twins so we could exchange advice, support etc. Looking forward to hearing from you! x

Jjkm I think my best maternity clothes were from mamas and papas. Good quality things that I have been able to use second time round. Will eBay everything after this pregnancy.

tabbycat76 · 01/09/2010 19:14

I'm just over 15 weeks now and still waiting patiently for any kind of movements, be it wind, snakes or otherwise! I'm looking properly pregnant now and no longer look like I've eaten one too many pies, so I'm dead chuffed with that! I wonder if anyone has had the same concerns re growth as me since you can't properly tell you're expanding when it's you yourself carrying them and living with it!?? A scan would be most welcome to reassure but the fact that people are commenting now makes me feel so much better. :)

As for maternity clothes.... I've dredged out some old clothes from the wardrobe that still fit. I'm doing office work at the mo (at work on a phased return basis) so am in civies... if I was there any longer I'd HAVE to go and buy something but I'm hoping that next week I'll be back in uniform on the ward. Infact I picked up some maternity uniforms today from a friend... they're huge! And sooo unflattering! Oh the joys!

Thanks ladies for your replies, just wondered if because there are 2 you would feel it earlier, but then I suppose they could be smaller etc??? Will have a look into those books too.

Am already in maternity jeans (except one pair that I was given in a bigger size). I have a definate bump already although its a little wobbly!

sassy34264 · 01/09/2010 22:02

smokey Thank you. They are definately divine! I'm so in love......they are perfect in every way.
They are being assessed again tomorrow for jaundice and i will have to go back to hospital on friday if they say they still have it. (think they have, but it is going less and less)

I'd be up for a post natal thread.......we need to advise each other!

Amberc · 02/09/2010 08:48

If you go to a post natal thread we will miss you on the ante natal!!

Hi, just wanted to give this thread a little bump as I'm also expecting twins.
Does anyone know of special offers or help for people with twins or what sort of help the government gives? I'm concerned financially as I know my DH isnt earning enough to support 2 more and I'm not working yet and I need to get myself a car and fast!
Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 06/09/2010 09:35

Hi holidays2010 congratulations, when are your twins due?

I am sure you get double the child benefit and you will also get a higher rate of tax credit as you will have 2 children under one. Depending on your circumstances you might be entitled to a Surestart Grant £500 and the HIP Grant £195 depending on when you are due as the government are getting rid of this in January 2011 (They are not per child, just one payment).

Maybe one of the ladies in the Multiple Births section might be able to help? Or you could have a look at the Tamba website?

Hope this helps.

holidays2010 · 06/09/2010 09:49

Thanks Magic8ball, I was rather hoping the £500 grant would double, I really cant see that going anywhere with two babies! :(
I will take a look at the MB section and Tamba, cheers.
I'm due in Feb, but from what I've heard, with twins they can come at anytime from 37 weeks!
:)

holidays2010 · 06/09/2010 09:56

Also how do you know they're identical or not? I only know mine are not sharing a placenta.

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 06/09/2010 12:03

Identicals share the same placenta/gestational sac although if the egg splits early enough I think they can be separate.

holidays2010 · 06/09/2010 13:51

Right so that means mine are not identical then, so they could infact be a boy and a girl. Although I'm betting it's two boys still, just have that feeling.
Thanks again.
Oh and I read somewhere that the maternity grant is paid per child so if that is correct it should cover the cost of cots and double pram! :)

jackinthebump · 06/09/2010 17:29

The Health in Pregnancy Grant is payable per pregnancy regardless of number or babies, not sure about the 500 pound one though. Identical share placenta - mono zygotic/mono chorionic - one egg fraternal have one placenta each - di zygotic/di chorionic. Sometimes fraternal twins placentas fuse and can appear as one, inspection at birth should be able to tell if this is the case.

jackinthebump · 06/09/2010 17:35

Sure start maternity grant is payable per baby!!! Although you have to apply for it so it may be refused for both.

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 07/09/2010 09:04

The grant is per baby. You have until they are 3 months old to apply.

Swazzee · 07/09/2010 10:15

Welcome Holidays. I've just received my Health in Preg payment - only took a week from when I sent off the form (you can do it from 25 weeks, so you should be able to get in before they cut it in Jan. It's £190 not £195 by the way, not that a fiver makes much difference!

I had a feeling I was having 2 boys too, and that's what they've turned out to be! The woman at the scan said even though they're in two sacs with two placentas, there's still a 30% chance they're identical. But as boy/girl twins run in my family (a fact unknown to me until I found I was expecting twins) I expect they aren't identical.

I have my 28 week scan this afternoon.

Lavitabellissima · 07/09/2010 14:21

Good luck with your scan today Swazzee

I had my 26 week scan yesterday all was well but as I thought 1 twin is breech and has her head right under my rib cage which is rather uncomfortable to say the least Hmm

Welcome Holidays Smile

My pram arrives a week on Saturday Grin just need to organised everything else now!

holidays2010 · 07/09/2010 15:05

Thanks for all the welcomes :o

I started talking prams and cots to my DH and he got all in a tizzy, he said "I'm not stocking up for xmas!" :P He still thinks there's 9months to go, not 5!

I'm going for my scan on Thursday, still in two minds about buying the pictures though...I was considering waiting until they are a bit bigger and buy the next scan pictures...or is this the only scan?

holidays2010 · 07/09/2010 15:06

Oh just re-read the last post, I'm only 12 weeks so I guess I'll be getting another scan at 26 weeks then..

smokeybacon · 07/09/2010 15:11

I have pram news!

I have "won" my ABC Adventure Buggy on an Ebay Auction. here
Still having trouble getting my head round the fact we need a triple buggy. But I think DS2 will quite like sitting up top! Picking it up the weekend after next.

And welcome holidays!!

smokeybacon · 07/09/2010 15:12

lavita which pram did you go for? Have I missed that??

holidays2010 · 07/09/2010 15:24

Ta, is the pram new? I'm really hoping to save some dosh on the pram and cot/s.

What would you recommend for twins, two cheap cots or one and put in a divider? I'm stumped. Plus kind of small on space in my flat..

sassy34264 · 07/09/2010 15:32

Hi, hope everyone is well? Welcome to everyone whose new. I will post on here still, but i'm happy to start a new thread once a few more of you have had your babies. :)

I have mostly been reading the posts every day, but don't always have the time or the energy to write something!
I have spent the last 2 days attending hospital for the babies prolonged jaundice. The poor mites have so many marks on the feet where they have been pricked to death. They've had more needles than me and i'm nearly 36!
Midwife had been telling me for the last 2 weeks to get them in the light, get them in the light and i found out today that it's not that kind of jaundice and photo whatever it's called would not make any difference. (rolling eyes) I've been putting the cot at the window and walking about with them nearly naked (the babies-not me!)pushing the bloody pram for nothing.

I've also seen a doctor for myself, cos my scar was oozing a bit. On anti biotics now for an infection. Sigh. Not been a good 2 days and made worse by the fact that i'm bloody knackered today. Jacob is unsatisfiable and feeding every 1 and a half hours. I'm wobbling on the breast feeding...........NO!

holidays2010 · 07/09/2010 15:40

Aw, sorry to hear about that sassy, hope everything gets better for you and the little ones!
