bouncingblueberries · 27/04/2010 11:10

OK, how many weeks are you pample?

The DirectGov website has this to say:

You can get the grant if all of the following apply:

  • you are 25 weeks pregnant or more
  • you have been given health advice from a midwife or doctor

How do you claim?

Get a claim form from your midwife or doctor - as long as you're at least 25 weeks pregnant. Your midwife or doctor must fill in their part of the form and sign it before giving it to you.

You will need to get your claim form to HMRC within 31 days of your midwife or doctor signing the form - otherwise you may miss out on the grant.

HTH. No need to wait til 28 weeks - that's bonkers!

pamplem0usse · 27/04/2010 11:13

Thanks blueberries. I think my DH was just a bit shocked as he tends to assume I'm over-reacting.... but he's completely for me changing (and he knows that I get on fine with the lovely midwives at the hospital).

I found the .gov link about the HIP grant and they look like they're desperate for people to get it on time. Anyway have an emergency GP's appointment later to sort out my UTI so will have a chat with him then!

Back to work!

pamplem0usse · 27/04/2010 11:14

Cross-posting! Thanks again. I'm 23 weeks... I'm gonna talk to my GP about picking it up at 25 weeks even if I don't have an appointment that week! Hopefully he'll be more amenable. I can't believe she found it funny that we might lose out on nearly £200!

mrsZaC · 27/04/2010 11:40

hello ladies,

thankfully baby isn't bouncing in inappropriate places today - woopee!

pample your midwife sounds rubbish! sack her

I think I'll probably miss out on HIP grant unless by some miracle they keep it. Shame since I've already spent it - woops! I won't be 25 weeks until 20th May

Forgot to say, was chatting with the lovely New Zealand man from Merino Kids at the baby show. Sooo helpful, he was explaining the benefits of using merino wool swadling and sleeping bags, and gave me a demonstration of how it all worked. I bought a coccooi which will last up till 3 months, and doesn't need washing often as it naturally carries the moisture away from the baby. I was really impressed with all the benefits and hopefully will manage to just use that and nothing else for baby at night. It also has a little vent at the back so you can put the car seat harness on without unwrapping baby. They also do sleeping bags that last from newborn to 24 months which were super impressive too. Sorry I just get so excited when I find innovative products!!

I'm absolutely shocked at all the trouble you ladies are having with public transport, I don't really use any as I walk to work and drive anywhere else really. I think all these people should be ashamed of themselves, I would give up a seat for a preggers lady!!!

YummymummyKJulie · 27/04/2010 12:14

Morning Girls!

I am soo impressed with you all! I can not believe Cherry Pie that you already packed your hospital bag ;-) I have not even painted the nusrey yet, and dont have any toys or anything like pram or cot...we starting getting everything now... I am getting more paranoid now...;-)

have you girls heard about the Hauck icoo prams? I have seen one and I am in love..they such reasonable price but not sure if people know anything about them...Check it out? www.icoo.de/index.php?id=187&L=1

Emster30 Yes NCT is so popular, I have recieved the letter but for me they are charging 300 which is quite expensive..not sure now as I have free all the same classes in my hospital, so is it worth it only for meeting new mums? that is my question?

pamplem0usse I am so sorry about your midwife she sounds horrible! I am not sure why she didnt give you the HIP grant, I had my appt yesterday with my midwife and it is obligatory to give you after you 25 weeks not 28? What a utter rubbish, can you not speak to someone else? can you not complain?

Hope you having nice day....

bouncingblueberries · 27/04/2010 12:15

Girls

If you need a good rant about the joys (allegedly) of pregnancy and /or need a giggle, head over to this thread

Hilarious - just make sure you've been doing your pelvic floor exercises!

neenz · 27/04/2010 13:06

Coffee, sounds like you were well within your rights to tell her she couldn't have the day off, and also to say you accepted her resiugnation. What else could you have done? You definitely shouldn't have felt the need to cancel your holiday. What a brat she sounds.

My best friend fell out with me last year because she has a son with very mild SN (he has a fused bone in his spine and had delayed walking and talking) and she was upset that I was putting on my FB status about my twins crawling and walking. She said I had been 'very insenstive to her situation' and she wondered whether I was 'doing it on purpose'! Of course it never occured to me that it would upset her, I assumed she would be happy to hear what my kids were up to (she lives in Oz). Friends can be funny fish. I think you should email your friend back with your side of the story but don't put anything personal/attacking toward your friend or her DD. Take the moral high ground!

Pample, your MW sounds horrid. I would complain once the pg is over.

I didn't do NCT classes cos of the cost and cos they were 15miles away so little chance of meeting local mums. I did NHS classes at the centre just up the road and they were great - I met two lovely women who are still friends now. It is really nice to have mum friends with babies the same age as yours.

LCRLCR · 27/04/2010 13:06

Oh dear shopping heaven ! I also ordered from Kiddicare last night after I saw you post cherry - got a cotbed reduced from £306 to £149! Ok so I still need to get a mattress and bedding but seemed like a good deal.....

Sleepign bags - I am definitely going to order from Mamas and Papas - how many do I need, presumably baby will wee and vom on them sometimes - 3/4 per age range?

pample what a mare your midwife is! I love a good complaint - can you complain, ask for someone else?

bouncing poor you, sounds horrid. I bet it was a rise in adrenalin too! I hate those priority seats - they are never available and the train comoany puts the onus on me to have to ask for a seat and i hate doing it. Especially as it's a logn journey so I know whatevr poor sod stands up for me then has to stand for 1 hour and 15

bouncingblueberries · 27/04/2010 13:33

Talking of shopping...

I've just bought this dress from M&S.

I bought it in white and my cunning plan is to wear it as a skirt NOW and then as a dress after baby arrives

Might need to buy it in red as well...or turquoise...hmmm

Alicetheinvisible · 27/04/2010 13:34

Erm, can i just say CALM DOWN WITH THE SHOPPING LADIES!!!!!!!!! So many people i know have bought things that their child didn't get on with or they didn't take out of the packet.

DD hated being swaddled, hated sleeping bags and hated being tucked in at all in bed. We used to put extra clothing layers on her instead, so was very grateful i hadn't bought huge amounts of blankets.

I would suggest buying one of something to start with and seeing how you get on with it first.

Oh, and i made a bib out of an old t-shirt yesterday, turned out really well, so going to make some more, and some burp cloths too.

LCRLCR · 27/04/2010 13:55

haha Alice you are right....!!

pamplem0usse · 27/04/2010 13:57

Urg so kidney pains getting much worse... can't move my GP appointment forward or even speak to someone so DH drove me to A&E. They send me back home to wait for my GPs appointment depsite the fact I'm in alot of pain ('as long as you're not bleeding'). Frankly astonished by the level of 'care' I've received today.

YummymummyKJulie · 27/04/2010 14:00

bouncingblueberries I have got the same skirt/dress....and I wear it both ways even now! :P so comfortable...I bought it Special K red! :P

bouncingblueberries · 27/04/2010 14:07

Oh pample honey - that's really not good. What time is your appointment? Have you taken any paracetamol? What about phoning labour ward (since your midwife is being rubbish today)? I know that might seem extreme, but if you're in pain and worried, they might see you or at least help you see someone sooner???

yummymummy really fancy the special K red one too

ElusiveMoose · 27/04/2010 14:07

WRT to the HIP, can I just ask whether we're speculating about what a future govt might do, or have the Tories or Lib Dems made an actual policy announcement? I only ask, because if scrapping it isn't already on their agenda, then I'd frankly be stunned if they get round to it in the first month of govt, given all the other stuff that they'll have going on. Could be totally wrong, though . TBH I'm not a huge fan of the HIP (I think the money could be much better spent elsewhere), but I'll certainly be taking advantage of it if I still can .

Re sleeping bags, Alice makes a good point, and I should clarify what I meant - I didn't mean you should necessarily rush out and buy sleeping bags now (your baby might not like them, he/she might be too small, or share your bed for a bit, etc etc), just that the fact that you might well use them eventually is a good reason not to buy loads of other bedding that you might never use. It's easy to think with babies that it's much more convenient to buy stuff before the birth - but actually, it's very easy to get stuff online after the baby's born, and places like Kiddicare generally deliver very quickly. Actually, another thing about sleeping bags - they come in summer and rest-of-the-year weight, and it would be very irritating to buy summer weight ones now, only to find that you don't use them until the baby is 8 weeks old, by which time you'll probably need heavier ones. And if you are desperate to buy them now, I definitely wouldn't get more than two, simply because they're so expensive. And I had a really sicky baby. But I just festooned him with muslins during feeds (one thing you can never have too many of ), and he never really threw up much once I'd actually put him down to sleep.

If you're desperate to spend money, one thing I think is worth scouting around for is a special offer on baby monitors. IMO it's worth getting a decent one. We've got the BT Digital Plus, and I think it's absolutely brilliant (still use it now and am considering getting another one ). It is very clear, has adjustable volume and sensitivity, tells you the room temp, has a stars night light (which DS loves) and nursery rhymes (I never used these but know people who did). I used it practically from day one, as I would try to put DS down upstairs for naps sometimes.

Neenz, I'm at your hyper-sensitive ex-friend, by the way!

CherryPie3 · 27/04/2010 14:17

Pample I agree with MrsZaC - you need to sack your mw!! How rude of her to ignore your dh completely!!!
I'm not one to hold my tongue so I probably would have strangled her - verbally of course

YummyMummy That pram is very lovely

Blueberries Thats a great idea about the pillowcases over the changing mat! Will be using that one...

LCR Have you been able to track your order yet? We didn't place ours until about half 7 so I'm wondering if thats why it's not showing yet?? .

Alice How creative are you??

OP posts:
CherryPie3 · 27/04/2010 14:23

Pample I agree with blueberries - ring straight through to the ante-natal/post-natal ward at your hospital - they may request to see you straight away!! It's not on really is it, yu're in pain and you're pregnant! Even if I wasn't pregnant I would expect better care than what you've had today. Hope you feel better soon darling xx

Blueberries very much like the special k red dress

OP posts:
Alicetheinvisible · 27/04/2010 14:35

Pample do you have an MFAU (maternal and fetal assessment unit) at your local hospital? I used ours a couple of times last pg and they were great, really helpful and reassuring.

cherry not very! but i find it theraputic and i followed an online tutorial and found it very easy

LCRLCR · 27/04/2010 14:36

cherry no I can't track my order yet either and I also placed it late, about 10 last night.

Gosh pample it must be so stressful for you feeling that the medical profession is not taking care of you. Play hard ball!

Baby montors ok another thing I need - any idea where I might get special offers? I've also heard that the BT Digitial Plus is the best one....

xx

CherryPie3 · 27/04/2010 14:52

Just looked at the reviews on BT Digital Plus and it looks super - just having a lok around for the cheapest one now

LCR Do you know when your orders meant to be delivered? Apparently ours is tomorrow so I'm a bit worried that I have no way of confirming it - therefore no way of making sure someones in. Not a huge problem as I'm certain my neighbour will take it in for me - I might get a few questions afterwards tho as I still haven't told them about my pregnancy...not that I'm hiding it, I;m hardly able to with a bump the size of Jupiter!

OP posts:
ElusiveMoose · 27/04/2010 14:54

LCR I've just looked on Amazon and they have it at £20 off at the moment, but you might be able to do better than that. Any general electrical sites are worth a try. (NB I wouldn't buy used, if I were you; although ours still works fine, the rechargeable battery in the 'parent unit' has started to go, so it only lasts for about 2 hours now before it has to be plugged in again)

YummymummyKJulie · 27/04/2010 14:57

LCRLCR TRY www.preciouslittleone.com/products/60/baby-monitors/

neenz · 27/04/2010 16:05

BT digital baby monitors are great, we have one and it was only £30, just tried to search for it and can't find it anywhere so maybe they have stopped making it.

Please please please don't buy one of those Grobag egg thermometers - I don't think I have come across a bigger waste of money . Just get a cardboard thermometer like this - £2!

With sleeping bags, Dunelm they do them quite cheap and also Tesco and Asda. I would just get two - one for wearing one for washing. If the baby spews on it and the other one isn't clean it's no big deal using the sicky anyway (as long as it is not soaking wet). I have never really needed the lightweight 1 tog ones. I think if it is that hot they can just sleep in vest and/or pyjamas with no covers (altho some babies apparently don't like having no covers... mine have never bothered tho).

bouncingblueberries · 27/04/2010 16:18

[whispers] I love my GroBag Egg Thermometer, I truly do!

[slinks off]

ElusiveMoose · 27/04/2010 17:02

Ah, I'm somewhere between the two of you. I never had a grobag egg, but I do like being able to check the temperature of the baby's room without going in. A monitor with temp display does the trick .

(Sadly, my DS is one of those who doesn't like sleeping without covers on, so I always had to get the lightweight sleeping bags. And using a bag all the time does have the added benefit of stopping your child from climbing out of the cot .)
