Jenny I'm so, so sorry to hear your news . Can't imagine what you must be going through. Sending you big >.

Hi SassaB, and welcome.

CazEM · 28/03/2010 17:56

Hey Bubbabear,

I had the swine flu jab the day after my BFP because I was due to have it anyway that day for my job. (I work with medically vunerable children.) I checked with the school nursing team and the nurses that came into school to give us the jabs and they all assured me it was safe so I still had the jab. I was approx 5 weeks preg and had absolutely no adverse effects, my arm didn't even hurt that much! I know quite a few people (not pregnant women)who have complained of mild flu like symptoms after it, but I was fine and pregnancy has been progressing normally, scans have been fine etc.

SassaB · 28/03/2010 21:06

Hi Bubbabear,

My SIS works in a hospital and she advised me that the risk of contracting swine flu at this time of year was greatly reduced so not to worry about having the jab. Especially as the flu virus has mutated to they would not be able to guarantee that it would work. I don't believe that it causes any harm to have it but when I checked with my MW she said not to worry about it either.

Re: cold and flu remedies, I have found the Vicks sinex nasal spray particularly helpful for clearing sinuses, and it is safe to use.

carolondon · 28/03/2010 21:48

I have just looked up the gestational diabetes test and you do have to fast from 10pm the previous evening. Now am really pissed off with my MW. Not only is she sending me for a test that is unneccessary, she has not even given me the basic preparation instructions. If pample hadn't said anything i would have turned up for the test having happily eaten breakfast and probably would have been told off and made to reschedule!
I want to complain when i go for my next scan on tuesday but also don't want to spoil what should be a happy and exciting occasion.

neenz · 28/03/2010 22:08

Caro, ring them tomorrow to complain!

I am going to have the swine flu jab - it is not a live virus and is based on the normal flu jab which has been used for years with no terrible side effects. There are small risks with any vaccine but I think on balance it is very safe. PG women in America often have the normal jab in flu season and it has been shown to have no harmful effect on unborn babies.

I agree the risk of catching swine flu is very low atm but I know one person who had it and she was laid out for a week, she couldn't even look after her son. She was very very ill. Some people get it and are hardly affected, of course, but SF can be very harmful to mums-to-be and unborn babies (some women and babies have died ) so I would rather have a non-harmful vaccine than take the small chance of catching the virus and maybe having an awful illness or even worse.

Just my opinion

thecoffeelady · 28/03/2010 23:00

carolondon I take it you have been given the vile powder that you mix with water to drink 2 hours prior to your GTT bloods being taken.... In that pack should have been a leafet that your MW should have told you to read. The fasting bit is nasty but that is why they always schedule them for first thing in morning

carolondon · 29/03/2010 08:00

coffelady, i have not been given anything! I am going to complain tomorrow, think i will arrive early for my scan and get a few answers.

CazEM · 29/03/2010 08:44

Morning all! Well first day of my hols and I was up at 6.30 anyway! A grand total of half hour extra in bed than a normal Monday! Lie-ins obviously already don't exist anymore, I was up at 7.30 over the weekend too! All preparation for what will become the norm after baby arrives I suppose!!

carolondon - make sure you complain, it sounds like a lot of unnecessary stress - if they think you need the test then the least they could do it run it properly and give you the relevant information.

I've got a dentist appointment this morning, then I think I'll pop in on my Mum and then maybe pop to Next and Matalan clearance and see what I can pick up for baby on the cheap! Oh I am enjoying this excuse for shopping, DH will be taking my card off me by the end of the week at this rate! Haha!

Have a happy Monday all!

babyducky · 29/03/2010 09:32

Morning all

Thats terrible carolondon! Def complain!!

Enjoy your shopping cazem.

Scan is tomorrow, so that means today will probably go really slow!

Will catch up later when ds is at nursery, have a good day everyone

pamplem0usse · 29/03/2010 11:18

caro I'm in a very similar position, not having been provided with any of the recommended information. I was under the impression that the GTT is generally done at 28 weeks too, while it sounds like you're having yours much earlier?
That said I've heard of numerous instances where people haven't been provided with the right instructions and have arrived on a full stomach of breakfast, but the medics have insisted on running the test anyway (despite the fact that this majorly invalidates the results). It's rubbish. Anyway enjoy your scan and hopefully get some clarity on the GTT rubbish!

sam86 · 29/03/2010 11:35

enjoy your scan babyduck, hope all is well.

what is a GTT? i dont think ive heard of it?

we started decorating the babys room last week, starting to look really nice - its baby yellow with fun to see jungle safari stickers, looks alot more effective than I thought it would and DD is constantly in there at the moment - I think its got her seal of approval!
Also got all the old baby clothes out of the loft and went through them, thankfully there is lots in great condition so dont think the baby will need much new. Sadly the savings there are over ruled by the fact the buggy and car seat have somehow been destroyed in the loft so need a new travel system!

Best news of the day though, is that DH may have his old job back which he was laid off from at the end of last year, so fingers crossed! x

babyducky · 29/03/2010 11:43

Thanks sam86,

We have those stickers too, they are really nice, ours are starting to peel off a bit now though, we have had them 4 years though & have moved them around quite a few times!

Going to get some new ones before the baby is born, as it will be sharing a room with ds, its quite hard to decorate a room for a baby & a toddler I think, especially if different sexes.

good luck with your dh's job!

Where's cherrypie?

Still no mrszac either?!

Welcome to any new people I missed

CherryPie3 · 29/03/2010 13:00

CherryPie here .
Did you miss me?
Have been reading up on the weekends conversations that I've missed. Got my list updated here with scan dates/results and new people.
Have also sadly taken Jenny off. How awful! If you're reading hun, I really hope you take the time you need you feel better again. It's truly heartshattering!!

Hi to SassyB And also congrats to all happy scanees. ( at your shybaby blueberries )

All your talk of ham sandwiches on Friday (that I missed - will tell you why in a bit) has made me really want a ham sandwich!! So my lunch is kinda sorted today - will pop to Asda on my lunch and buy bread, ham (got to be wafer thin!) and salad cream - along with icerberg lettuce and tomatoes for slicing. Nom Nom Nom!!!

WRT to wine. I haven't drunk any despite my mum's best efforts - insead I've been drinking apple high juice cordial in a pink wine glass - it almost looks like white wine....honest!!!

Thank you all for you concern on Friday after that idiot chav man hit me. The damage to the car is very minimal so haven't bothered calling insurance but am definitely considering claiming injury against him as my back/shoulder has been agony since!!!! Still thinking about whether I can be bothered going for a medical etc.
We'll see...
Anyway I went to the mw on friday for me weekly BP check and when I told her about the accident she sent me to the Ante-Natal ward at hospital to be checked over cos the seatbelt tightened when he hit me. So I got there and was told to go sit down and wait for someone to become available to come see me. So I waited and waited and waited. Eventually after along time waiting - literally more than 2 and a half hours! - they listened to baby with a doppler (same as first mw who sent me there) and said 'yep baby's fine, why were you sent here?'
What. A. Waste. Of. Time!!!! But baby's fine and wriggly, and I'm fine so now harm done - just time lost.

Blueberries they put a reference to my size on my scan report as well - don't worry about it hun! You have a great BMI and it seems pretty stupid of them to put something like that on the report, I know they have to but still....

Pample you tell that gossiping yoga lady!! How dare she comment on your clothes/size - how rude!!!!

OP posts:
sam86 · 29/03/2010 14:13

babyducky - are you getting the jungle ones again or going for a different design? will be really hard to decorate if they are different genders, maybe stick to a theme like the underwater one -that looks really nice? i do love the stickers but we feel like DD has been let down a bit as her room now is just plain baby pink so we are thinking about getting the new princess stickers (not the disney ones) that theyve just brought out.

cherrypie3 - that must have been so annoying! nothing worse than sitting there for hours, starting to think the worst, and then all they do is whats already been done and tell you there was no need for you to come!!! When I was having DD, I came back from Egypt at about 5 and a half months, and the GP took it upon himself to listen to LO with a stethoscope and then told me to rush to hospital straight away as he didnt think the baby was alive anymore. the MWs at the hospital couldnt believe he'd tried to listen with a stethoscope and panicked me so much.
i want a ham sandwich now!!
hope your all having a good day - its lashing down here so not up to much today!xx

ElusiveMoose · 29/03/2010 14:31

Another fan of the big stickers here!! We've got the jungle ones and my niece has got the underwater ones. I think both would be fine for a unisex room. I'm getting frustrated because I can't do any decorating yet - the plan is that DH and I are going to move into the loft conversion room (assuming we have it done), and the new baby will have our room - but I can't see that happening until late autumn. So to start off with the baby won't have a room of its own at all - and I'm not going to be decorating my own room with stickers until I've moved out of it .

Incidentally, all this room moving means that DS1 will have the smallest room, while DS2-to-be will eventually have the biggest. Do you think that matters?? At this stage I'm guessing that DS1 would rather stay in his own room than move to a new (bigger) one, but I'm a bit worried that he'll become resentful in a couple of years' time that his little brother's got a bigger room than him .

babyducky · 29/03/2010 14:36

hello cherry

thought you had gone aswell!!

How annoying having to wait that long, but as you say at least you and baby are fine.

Sam- will prob get the jungle ones again, as we have got a huge cuddly gorilla in the room & lots of little monkeys hanging around the room aswell! Also jungle cot bedding & lamp, all which we got when ds was a baby.

The underwater one is nice too, havent seen the princess stickers, bet your dd would love them though!

Its raining here too, i got soaked taking ds to nursery, hope it stops by the time I go pick him up!

babyducky · 29/03/2010 14:40

sorry x posts with you elusivemoose, they are great aren't they!

I think It'll be fine to give the baby the bigger room, I doubt your ds would notice his brothers is bigger anyway!

CherryPie3 · 29/03/2010 16:30

Crikey Sam How scary to be told that!!!! Silly doctor - and we expect them to know what they're doing

Elusive I'm sure your ds will be too wrapped up in new baby to really notice that he's in the smallest room, don't worry - they can always swap later if its a problem.

Ducky I've said before that I ain't going nowhere . I'm here to stay, because I like doing your lists

These wall stickers sound lovely, we're just planning our redecorating our upstairs and we're thinking of painting both dd and ds's rooms pale blue and just personalise them with wall stickers. Sophie wants Hello Kitty stickers, and Rio isn't bothered but he's really into Chelsea FC - much to the dismay of ManUtd supporting dh - so will prob get him some footie stickers.

Where is everyone?

Hello all! Anyone else suffering from leaky boobs? It happened to me for the first time last night, gave me quite a shock! I was just in Tesco's and navigated the baby section for the first time to pick up some breast pads. I'm going to keep a couple in my bag from now on just in case - how embarrassing would it be if they started to leak through clothes during the day!

Have just eaten a whole bag of mini eggs and feel pretty sick now... silly me.

CherryPie3 · 29/03/2010 16:52

Hi Emster leaky boobs here too, not much up to now tho luckily. Good idea to keep a couple of pads in your bag just in case!

One of my colleagues fetched some lovely easter goodies in earlier - I had a huuuuge mini eggs cornflake bun, it took me 15 minutes to eat it!!! But it was soooooo yummy!!

OP posts:
sam86 · 29/03/2010 16:57

Elusivemoose i dont think it will matter too much either about the rooms -not yet anyway! maybe in a few years time it might be an issue but we used to swap and change rooms so often when we were kids so they could always swap if needed? if you're like us then new baby wont even be in their own room until around 5/6 months so hopefully you'll have plenty of time to finish the loft room - I am pretty jealous, Im sure it will be gorgeous when its done!!

Babyducky did you get the jungle bedding etc from Mothercare? I'm planning on getting those once the maternity grant comes through, I love the bedding and the lion rug! Love the idea of all the monkeys too - funnily enough, DH tried to buy a massive one the other day at the market but a women got it before him and he was begging her to let him have it lol!! Wish I had seen him saying "you dont understand - weve got a jungle theme!!" !

CherryPie baby blue sounds gorgeous, really like that colour (not Chelsea though!! Liverpool fan here and slowly chivvying DD to be too- much to my DH's dismay, hes an Everton fan haha).

Emster Oh no not yet!! With DD I think I started around 7 months and I keep thinking I can feel it now but then I check and Im ok so Im just paranoid! I hated it , the bed was always soaked in the morning no matter if I wore pads- not good! Mmmm mini eggs!! pass them over!

bouncingblueberries · 29/03/2010 17:16

Hi girls! Sorry, been crazy busy today so only just catching up now on the train home!

Loving all the decorating talk - our shybaby will be sharing we it eventually moves out of our room but ds's room was redecorated not that long ago (lovely sunny yellow!), so now I've had a shift around in there and chucked all the broken toys I'm quite happy with it.

Just had a meeting with my directors to talk about maternity leave - god they are rubbish! Their first comment was "don't worry, we're going to comply with all the stuff we're legally obliged to..." I should bloody well hope so! Need to find a good HR/legal brain to tell me where I stand with my nursery vouchers though - directors don't think they're classed as a benefit because they're a salary sacrifice, but I'm sure they are and should therefore be protected while on mat leave. So frustrating that they don't know what they're doing! Makes me immediately think I'm being short-changed!

marzipananimal · 29/03/2010 17:31

Hello all, i had my scan today - it was lovely I have an anterior placenta which explains why I haven't felt any significant movement yet (although I think I felt a little poke this afternoon).

The ultrasonographer was really nice although there was a trainee doing some of it too who was a bit incompetent and didn't seem to have a sense of humour. We ended up getting the photos for free for some reason though so that was a bonus!

sam that doctor sounds ridiculous! I have a friend who had a similar experience - she was worried because she hadn't felt any movement but the doctor didn't know what the heartbeat should sound like so he asked her! She left in tears and went to a different surgery. (everythign was fine)

pamplem0usse · 29/03/2010 17:34

Blueberries the prevailing view amongst HR experts is that childcare/nursery vouchers class as a benefit even though they're salary sacrifice. The current advice for companies is to regard them as such if they want to avoid future potential sex discrimination cases.......
See www.personneltoday.com/articles/2009/06/10/51018/childcare-vouchers-and-maternity-leave.html

CherryPie3 · 29/03/2010 17:36

Blueberries Thats a really good point about the childcare vouchers!! I don't use them so have no experience of them - you'd really expect them to know what they're doing wouldn't you?
