New ante-natal thread... the post-natal thread is here

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MandaHugNKiss · 08/03/2010 06:45

BH's all day long have amounted to nada, so due date passes and DD doesn't get to share her BD (I've forgotten already who asked! But she really really wanted him to come on her day. So, she wouldn't have minded sharing at all but who's to say how he would have felt about it when older?)

Emptying out my bedroom yesterday (which took a mammoth 2+ hours - it seems I'm something of a hoarder!) revealed several very fancy dresses I haven't worn for a while. Perhaps I should put them all on...? (no chance of heels too as my horribly swollen trotters feet won't fit in them )

Sariska · 08/03/2010 07:22

Not sure if things actually starting to happen here. Started having a show late last night. More this morning. Baaad cramps last night, which stopped me from sleeping much. Mostly in my back, too. Hope that doesn't mean a back-to-back baby. And now - and sorry for TMI - a kind of pinkish stained watery discharge. Does that sound worrying? There's not much of it so ATM I'm intending to go on as planned and take DS to the park to tire him out. MW coming this afternoon anyway.

Pingpong · 08/03/2010 07:47

waves hello the waiting mums - DD2 still has no name and really likes to be held so MN time is severely restricted! I can browse but not type very easily.
Thinking of you all and looking forward to us all being together on the 'other' side with our wee/big bundles!
pixie can't believe your girls are hanging in there - surely it can't be long now.
Congrats to mumof8 you sound amazing and make feel very wimpy about my post CS recovery. I definitely need painkillers to move around and thought I was doing well to get out after 2 nights. I couldn't have coped at home after 24 hours.

blonde36er · 08/03/2010 08:28

Sariska - sounds promising

Mumof8 - congratulations

No news here, tried going for a drive over some VERY bumpy lanes last night which did absolutely naff all Anyway, fed up of sitting on the floor/bouncing on the edge of the sofa etc etc and am giving up persuading fat baby to come out, if it doesn't want to come out itself then I AM going to go for induction on Thursday, and hopefully by Saturday I can be snuggled up in my own bed with my DH and new baby.

No more show, so perhaps it's all come out - sorry if tmi!!

Just to check, I am right in thinking that even if hospital policy is for mums to stay in for min. 6 hours afterwards, if all is well then they can't do anything to stop me and the baby going home sooner if I want because it's a hospital and not a prison?

MandaHugNKiss · 08/03/2010 08:52

Oooh, mumof8 many congrats. So happy to hear the stresses of the last couple of weeks fade as ou gazed at your little girl. ALso so pleased that not only was the section not the trauma you were imagining (I guess fear of the unknown always IS worse than reality!) and also obviously the 'right' decision given her positioning.

sariska SOunds as if your waters may have gone too... Mine were clear, but I've had couple of friends/family describe it as pinky coloured watery discharge. Either way, you seem to be on your way - easy labour vibes for you!

blonde so sorry all your efforts have amounted to naught so far... but at least you have a finishing line in sight if you've decided on an induction come thursday. It's well known that children and animals will always catch you on th ehop so perhaps if you simply switch off from 'when will I go into labour?' you will... go into labour! (hey, worth a shot if nothing else has worked :P)

Pixie indeed, I'm mightily impressed at how long you've kept those girls cooking. To get thus far before truly bedridden (and with a bell, no less. Fancy!) is fantastic.

MummyElk · 08/03/2010 09:42

quick one for blonde yes you can go home whenever, it just means that they have to get a specially trained mw to come visit you at home to check hearing/hips etc (usually the paed gives them a once over), so no reason why not. you might find anyway by the time you've got the baby out, snuggled into bed for a bit collapsed back onto the meagre pillows and recovered slightly, that the 6 hours has gone by anyway.

can't type for long, another migraine is about to ruin my monday plans

good luck sariska

Henrietta · 08/03/2010 10:26

ecstaticmumofeightplusfour congrats and about even considering no9 at this point - I don't till about they're a year, but thats prob because I know DH won't even discuss it till then. For me though this will prob be last planned pGY.
mummyelkhope pushchair hunting goes ok.
sariska Yippee something happening...was going to try & forget about mini eggs but now I HAVE to go and get some...
Blondeallthe best for Thurs-Sat...theoretically they can't keep you in - but they put tags on baby so alarms would go off if you just walked out, and they usually give you the we need to check on...is ok with baby, and the PAed/doctor needs to sign baby out etc don't know how you get round that one - I was kept in 2 days last time for no good reason other than waiting for the above...and you wont of course go home without baby...usually they try to get you out quick as poss as they need beds.

annamama · 08/03/2010 10:54

Swings - repeat the mantra "every pregnancy is different"! I'm sure you'll go into labour soon. My DD hasn't seen Charlie & Lola, will have to check it out.

Henrietta - no relax, I don't expect you to have stomach muscles or pelvic floor, who needs 'em eh...?

I agree, don't think there will be much time to post during the first few weeks at least.

Mum of 8 - congrats and glad you coped so well!

Yes of course there will be name sharing so let's hope we don't become close friends in real life if we choose the same names? No I take that back, it doesn't matter!

MummyElk - what colour Jane? Ours is the green & red like I said, but some other colours are lovely too. Hope the migraine goes away!

Sariska - you go girl! Update?

Hi Smac and thanks for checking in from the other side!

Blonde - I guess Pacific is right, induction probably will be ok if your body is ready. But you could go into labour any minute!

I don't think I would wanna stay long in hospital if all seems ok, but there's no mad rush either. And DH wants me to stay for a while to make sure everything is ok with the baby...

Henrietta - do they really have alarms on babies? That's good I suppose.

I'm 39 weeks today (yawn) and absolutely nothing happening.

OP posts:
blonde36er · 08/03/2010 11:07

I didn't realise they were alarmed either! I know they've got the little arm/leg tags on and CCTV all over the place, but I didn't realise there were alarms. DH has a habit of shouting 'run' whenever he hears a shop alarm going off, so he'd just do that if one went off at the hospital.

Feel better knowing they can't keep us hostage, I can be pretty stubborn (slight understatement) so they'll probably be glad to see the back of me. DH would like us home asap too so that he gets a day of lying in bed with his baby (and wife!) before the GPs descend on us

BulletProofMum · 08/03/2010 12:23

Hello there -still far busier here than on the post natal thread!

Hope you're all keeping well!

See you soon ...

(secretly wishing DD had stayed put until her due date on Thursday)

Henrietta · 08/03/2010 13:26

tags as far as i can remember yes they had the white plastic name tags but also a grey shopping tag on his ankle - I know cos I seriously thought about walking out last time but thought I wouldn't get past the heavy duty staff at the door

hecklephone · 08/03/2010 13:51

Big congrats mumof8 - glad the CS wasn't as bad as you thought it might be.

So we're 40 wks + 3 here and no sign of anything happening...

although I did just get a MASSIVE bottle of Gaviscon from the chemist, so maybe that'll prompt baby to come out, you know, so I don't have to use it and it all goes to waste...?

Have to decide if I want a sweep tomorrow at the MW, but I'm leaning towards giving it a miss just now, I'm not fed up enough (yet) to choose the discomfort!

But I do now think I want to fight for my right to party when it comes to delivering at the MW led unit instead of labour suite. Vertigo or no, I really want to maximise my chances of a water birth. In fact, I think the vertigo makes it LESS likely I'll want strong drugs or an epi, and therefore MORE likely I'll need other, more natural forms of pain relief. Anyway, I plan to put the foot down tomorrow.

Right, I'm off to watch Neighbours and eat a creme egg. Happy Monday, all Let us know if there are any more babies!

PacificDogwood · 08/03/2010 13:57

Sariska, ooooooh, exciting, sending good labour vibes your way

Re going home: you can go home anytime you want, hospitals are not prisons and of course you can take your baby with you. Most hospitals have a '6 hours after delivery' policy, mainly to make sure mum has managed to pee and has not had a major postpartum haemorrhage. IMO, by the time you've had your tea and toast and bath and cuddle etc etc 6 hours pass in a flash.
I am fully intending on staying as long as they'll have me - anything to give me and new baba a bit of peace to get to know each other. DH can wrestle with the other 3 for a day or 2 - male bonding is so important for fathers and sons IMO .

Also, do not grab your baby and run - the security tags do work when they don't slip off skinny newborn leggies: I have once witnessed the postnatal ward in "lock down" - turns out mum had taken her newborn outside with her for a fag ... (mum, not the baby, obviously... I hope... well, it is the West of Scotland here - Irnbru in baby's bottle, anyone??)

DS3 shows no sign of wanting a nap today , I need him to need a sleep for at least another year or so, gah....!

blonde36er · 08/03/2010 14:18

Won't grab and run then

Dalrymps · 08/03/2010 14:56

Afternoon ladies,

40 + 2 here, getting tired of being uncomfortale but also not too impatient yet as ds1 has a bad cough and i'd rather him be a bit better before I pop.

Got mw check on thurs, wonder if they'll give me a sweep if I request it? Anyone know? It's their usual policy to offer one at 10 days over, not sure what they'll be like if I ask for it earlier though

I had one at 10 days last time and things started gradually happening over the next 3 days (show, mild contractions) but still had to be induced as my time had run out. Well, I know I didn't have to be induced but I was seriously fed up by then so agreed to be.

I thought if I had an earlier one I might manage to go naturally before the 2 week mark...

Congrats mumof8!

And sending good luck and labour vibes for all of you overdue and waiting.

Nothing much happening here except a lot more braxton hicks. Just trying not to get anxious really. And eating a lot of crap to stop feeling sick as nausea has returned AGAIN. I wonder how you are doing with yours IWCAS? I hope you're feeling better.

Thinking more and more about going for an epidural. Wanted a natural water birth but now wondering if that's just plain crazy with the drugs that are available, why choose to be in pain? Hmm ... undecided.

heckle I've become addicted to Neighbours (and home and away) since becoming pregnant. Never watched them really in Oz! Must be preg hormones bringing on homesickness. Missing the sun and the beach ... would love a long walk on the beach right now, bit fed up with the damp.

PacificDogwood · 08/03/2010 15:47

Oh, we'll open a book on the twins !! Great idea! That'll while the time away....
I bet....

Friday 12.3.10
6-12pm
6lbs and 6 1/2lbs respectively

Dalrymps, I am sure they will be happy to offer you a sweep if you are past your dates and your cervix is favourable - if it ain't open a little bit, they cannot sweep . Defo worth to ask though...

DS3 fell asleep on the school run - now in his bed, without drugging of any kind ...

annamama · 08/03/2010 15:58

Walnut - I know what you mean... epidural is bliss. But at the same time it can slow down labour they say, and make it harder to be upright and active. Also apparently bigger risk for instrumental delivery. I'm going to try for a natural water birth with only G&A, but if the pain becomes unbearable for too long I'm open minded to another epidural!

BusyMissIzzy · 08/03/2010 17:05

Hi everyone.. guess what? I'm back home with a baby! Isobel Dawn (AKA BusyMissIzzy, which was DH's nickname for her before she was born) was born at 10.45pm last night, 7lbs. Will post proper birth story in the antenatal thread when I've had some sleep, but to summarize; 18 hours of back labour with only G&A, ended with episiotomy and ventouse. Not exactly what I had in mind, but it's over now and the memory is already getting fuzzy.
Sorry don't have the energy to catch up on everyone else right now, but looks like congrats are due to Mumof8+4. Look forward to reading all about it.
Waves to everyone else; I'm off for a nap..

blonde36er · 08/03/2010 20:32

Congratulations Busy - what a gorgeous name

Have managed to spend the day not encouraging labour in any way at all, and have ignored fat baby all day. In return I have been rewarded with all day Braxton Hicks (not painful but definitely lots of being tight!) and a very lively baby, but nothing more. I continue to ignore it just sit about. Going along the lines of a watched pot never boils

Off to do some more non-encouragement of labour and ignoring of fat baby. See you in the morning!
