Here we go ladies - I'll C&P the stats in a tick. Don't forget to add the gender on if you find out at your scan

meggymegmegs - that's terrible, so sorry to hear about your friend. You say the details are a bit sketchy at the moment, so I really hope she gets some positive news soon. Sounds like you are being a brilliant friend. I work with people with advanced cancer so if I can be of any help to you (or anyone else on the thread) with advice, information, etc then please let me know.

georgee I love, love, love the name Isla but we're not able to use it.

bluesnowfalcon I'm also getting a lot of nosebleeds and have been told its nothing to worry about.

Agree with everyone that one of the benefits of the name Elizabeth is that there are so many lovely names you could shorten it to. I'm still struggling to get too excited about it. Its the only girl's name DH and I can vaguely reach an agreement on though so it will stay on the list. I'm having another scan next month so maybe I'll see some evidence that we don't need to worry about girl names anyway!

Had checkup at the hospital this morning. All well, but need to go to my midwife for weekly blood tests, then back to hospital clinic in 5 weeks to see doctors and have a scan.

georgee · 16/02/2010 15:33

Hi LaTrucha - they were very traditional but all family names that we liked:

George,
Archie,
Michael,
James.

For some reason I find boys' names much easier than girls'!

LaTrucha · 16/02/2010 15:37

Lovely nsmes. unfortunately we can't steal them! We need things spelt / pronounced the same way in English and Spanish.

bobolana · 16/02/2010 17:31

We have a problem with the names as well. I thought I am having a boy, so the choice was soo easy - just follow the tradition and use the grandfather's name, but now, knowing that is actualy a girl, seems a bit complicated.

bobolana · 16/02/2010 17:33

How is your apetite going ladies? lately I feel so hungry and the thing is that I am hungry for bad things - sweets, chocolate, biscuits. I have managed to keep a very good and healthy diet up until now.
What to do? Give up and eat, or just think of something else and keep eating fruits and veg?

Happy pancake day!

LaTrucha · 16/02/2010 18:21

Firm believer that a little of what yuo fancy does you good. Just as long as it doesn't turn into a shedload!

LaTrucha · 16/02/2010 18:23

Or only occasionally a shedload!

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/02/2010 18:24

Masses of posts since I last posted. Have been reading in dribs and drabs but not had time to sit down properly and MN due to being busy with dd's party on Sunday, and then a long drive to Kent and back yesterday to visit some other MN friends. Let's see how far I can get with a catch up before the children start whining too much!

Eek for your UTI experience woofie, but glad that it turned out to be nothing more than that.

mampam - mothercare maternity stuff def goes up to a 20, as I had some stuff from them when I was pg with dd. Some of the largest size in H&M should be ok on you too.
I'm not in maternity stuff yet, and am planning on not being in it at all, but wearing some of my larger stuff or my stretchy skirts and trousers instead.

MonkeyMargot - have you looked at the icandy peach blossom - looks brilliant for twins?

MillyMollyMoo - we are planning on having a joint Christening for ds and the new baby. We haven't had ds done yet as we were going to do it last summer, but then our shed (enormous thing) burnt down, destroying our newly laid imprinted concrete patio and our bedroom windows at the same time, so the garden was really in no state to do it. We were going to postpone to this spring, but once we knew about the new baby we figured we may as well wait and do them both together. It shouldn't be any problem at all to get the church, and obviously we don't need to book our own garden for afterwards . Caterers were the only thing we struggled with for dd's Christening, although we got a fab one in the end. This time we are intending to get a fish and chip van and an ice cream van!

My birth plan will be v similar to last time, except that I am planning a natural 3rd stage, rather than having the jab like I have with the others. The hospital will want to induce me again (at 40 weeks if I continue to control the diabetes through diet, and at 38 weeks otherwise), but I am intending to refuse that and go in for monitoring of the placenta instead, which I believe they are obliged to offer me.

Isla is such a pretty name georgee. I only discovered it undergoing a revival when there were 2 of them in dd's small tumbletots class! I loved the name Fay when I was a teenager. To this day it still reminds me of the blond one from Grange Hill who had the affair with the teacher! Nina is another good one that you don't come across often (one of the criteria I use for name choosing).

Filly - please remember to put 'positive mental attitude' on your hospital bag list .

Very sorry to hear about your friend meggymegmegs. I know that us saying it isn't likely to make much difference to how you feel, but I'm sure that your friend would be pleased for you and not want you to feel guilty.

Georgee - on a similar vein, I was very sorry to read your fb status yesterday. I have another friend who had the same experience last year, and she is still trying to come to terms with it. If you would find it helpful to be in touch with her then do please let me know. She is an MNer (local to me so I've met her a few times), but I don't think that she's posted about it on board.

LaTrucha - epidurals usually slow down labour, but gas & air and pethidine/morphine don't afaik.

bobolana - eat low GI foods rather than lots of fruit. Wholewheat toast and peanut butter, or a slice of ham or chicken are good snacks, or oatcakes and cheese.

What a long post, but hopefully that brings me up to date!

Woofie · 16/02/2010 20:20

Thanks for all the lovely messages re UTI I went to the midwife and all seems to be back to normal. No more protein or red blood cells in the wee, and I haven't had any more cramps since the weekend. Sorry to hear you've been going through the same thing mrsc - I was prescribed the same dosage of amoxycillin as you, and it seems to have done the trick.

meggymegs and latrucha - how awful for you both. Incredibly hard to deal with at the best of times, but when pregnant...

bobolana - I have the appetite of a wildebeest, and mainly for chocolate-related products. Hey ho - it will all come off after the birth, right?

I'm having the best week off work... Ds and i spent a lot of time looking at trains today, and are off to Eureka (children's science museum in Halifax) tomorrow for my bday "treat" w ds's best friend and his mum. He's beside himself with excitement! It makes me really look forward to maternity leave for proper time with the kids, though whether I'll feel the same on zero sleep remains to be seen... Plus had a great girls' night out yesterday also in celebration (don't usually bother with bdays, but I figured we wouldn't be getting out much after June, so I might as well make the most of it this year) Dh caved in and gave me my present early just now (because of his excitement, not my insistence!) - and it's an iphone!! I'm a bit behind the times technologically speaking, but have been coveting one for ages and feel a bit like a 5-year-old on Christmas morning. Plus weekend break with only dh from Friday. Sorry if that all sounds terribly smug - it's much more exciting than life usually gets!

Hope you're all enjoying your pancakes x

MillyMollyMoo · 16/02/2010 20:24

LaTrucha It's just the epidural's that slow down labour, I think most midwife's consider them more trouble than they are worth, my last two births they certainly were not offering or handing them out freely and looking back I didn't need it.

can'tsleep They are obliged to offer monitoring, good one you if you hold out, I must admit by 42 weeks I'd pull it out through my eyeballs if necessary I'll be that sick of being pregnant.
I'm having reflexology, rasberry leaf tea and lots of sex whether DH feels - (sick not envy) or not.

LaTrucha · 16/02/2010 20:32

Right. Thanks for that ladies. Avoid eidurals.

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/02/2010 20:51

Sorry, my message to georgee re fb was actually meant for justbeme.

OP posts:
MonkeyMargot · 16/02/2010 21:11

meggymegs awful news about your friend. She is lucky to have good friends around like you to help support her. It just feels wrong somehow when this happens to someone in the prime of their life.

woofie and filly enjoy your time off this week! Admittedly, am more envious of fillys beauty treatments but the science museum does sound like fun (albeit of a different kind!)

greensnail am loving Lizzie Bennett. As others have pointed out, there are other diminuations of Elizabeth which are lovely also. Betty/Betsy/Libby - lots of possibilities.

I had my 20-week scan today (am I the last?) and all was well with the twins. I was quite nervous beforehand, and feel nothing but relief now. We didn't find out the sexes, but interestingly both twins were identical in size. They are both growing well and everything is normal. Phew.
Had mtg with registrar after scan and discussed the hospital's twin policy. All seemed very reasonable, and providing Twin A is head-down, no reason why a vaginal birth cannot happen.
Am feeling lots of movement, and it's lovely to know the exact position of each baby.

Right - bedtime for me! Hope everyone else is doing OK?

Woofie · 16/02/2010 21:27

Great news about the scan monkeymargot

Yep, I also concur greensnail - Lizzie Bennett is a lovely name, the association is a good one, and anyway not so salient that she'll get reminded of her namesake all the time (not like Oliver Twist or Huckleberry Finn, iyswim)

gizmo · 16/02/2010 22:25

Oh dear, I should go to bed rather than posting this...Sensible Gizmo has taken a quick holiday and Completely Freaking Out Gizmo is housesitting tonight.

Can someone hold my hand a bit, please? I got home this evening and found a message from my landline from the Fetal Medicine people. Just to call them, nothing more. But it's 6.30 pm by the time I hear the message and of course they're shut so I have to wait until tomorrow now.

The only thing they can want to tell me about is the results of the bloods. And the only test they can have got back this quickly is the TORCH screen which includes Toxoplasmosis - for which an echogenic bowel can be a marker. It's not going to be good, is it? . I'm trying to tell myself that if it had been really bad they have my mobile number and would have tried that, but it's not working: I am righteously FREAKING OUT here, because as far as I know they never ring to tell you good news, they just wait until the next appointment....

Shit.

dinosaurinmybelly · 16/02/2010 22:28

meggymegs so sorry to hear about your friend. Please feel free to vent here anytime you like as I can understand it dominating your thoughts at the moment. It is so sad that someone so young, recently married and looking forward to so many things is having to deal with this. I'm sure that she gets a lift out of being around you and your growing baby at the moment, so please don't feel guilty about it. I don't speak from experience, but I imagine both she and the little one in your tummy will benefit from you trying to focus on the positive and make this a special time for you all.

Lovely to hear that all was well with the scan monkeymargot. Thank you for the advice on healthy low GI snacks CSWS - I too have been fighting the urge to really go overboard on the crisps and chocolate consumption. Each day I try to draw a line under it and start afresh, but my resolve is broken in that dodgy period after lunch when I'm tired and the little ones are napping.

greensnail I too love Elizabeth and don't think it will draw anything but positive comments.

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/02/2010 22:34

Oh gizmo - I think it's quite reasonable for the 'completely freaking out' version of you to visit. A bit pants that they didn't phone your mobile number if you have given it to them, but it is quite likely that it's good news and so they thought that they wouldn't bother you whilst you are out and about. They just don't think sometimes about what we will imagine. Maybe they've managed to get some of the other results earlier than expected too - how long are the others supposed to take?

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 16/02/2010 22:35

Or maybe they messed up one of the tests, and just want some more blood or something.

OP posts:
gizmo · 16/02/2010 22:46

Oh thank God, the voice of reason...Can'tsleep, you know what, it doesn't actually matter what the truth of the matter is, you have given me some rational defences to engage against what is otherwise likely to be a sleepless night. Yes, you may well be right - or they might have mislaid my mob number or any number of 'maybes'.

Thinking about it, it is only Tuesday and my bloods went Friday morning: I don't know much about lab work but it seems quite a speedy turnaround for an immunoassay and I know it can't be the result of the genetic screening. Maybe DH's sample got lost in the system?

Gizmo thinks sensible thoughts

LittleRobbo · 17/02/2010 07:40

gizmo hope you managed to sleep well, i would be the same because i am a panic merchant,i'm sure all is well.

meggymegsawful news about your best friend, stay strong.

filly hilarious birth plan, very realistic! I would never even bother making one as nothing in my life has ever gone to plan so why would it when in labour

Can i ask ladies,i have been getting some very very strong braxton hicks,i've had no sleep for worrying about it,i was at work yesterday and may have over done it,which could explain.has anyone else been having them?

monkeymargot congrats on lovely scan

chestnut100 · 17/02/2010 08:31

Hi all

I havent managed to keep up with our really busy thread over the last few days as I have been mega ill, but did just see your post Gizmo and hope you will be able to post an update soon. It's natural to think the worst, but in reality it hardly ever turns out that way.

So, on the illness front, I started over the weekend with awful sickness and the runs. The GP diagnosed me on Monday with gastroenteritis, and told me it shouldn't affect the baby. None the less, she was laid curled in a little lump and not moving. The GP said to be aware of it for 24 hours and if no change to get to hospital. So of course, 24 hours pass, and I find myself in the hospital first thing yesterday. Baby was checked first and was fine, unfortunately mummy was not! Ketones were off the scale, and before I knew it I was admitted, hooked up to an IV drip, having blood taken and injections left right and centre. It was awful. Of course, within hours, baby was kicking anyway. Fianlly got discharged at 10 last night, but am still feeling rotten.

On the plus side, if anyone is due to have the baby at the Chelsea and Westminster, where I was yesterday, I must say the level of care was brilliant and every member of staff i encountered was lovely. So it was a nice insight for what to expect in labour!

gizmo · 17/02/2010 09:39

OK.

Time to add a new word to my google search list: cytomegalovirus.

A quick google reveals it's not good, but it's not too bad, either. In a small number (10-15%) of infected babies there are serious complications but typically it's silent. It's an extremely common infection, particularly for those who have (or have had) children in childcare. The frustating thing is that the risk of infection in the baby is much greater if you have your first infection during pregnancy, but since an infection is often silent it's often not possible to tell when it started. I know I could have picked it up any time in the past 8 years, or possibly even earlier.

I'm going to talk to the consultant at the Fetal Medicine Centre on Friday, get some more information. Not panicking anymore, just a bit depressed now.

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/02/2010 09:49

Don't have time to read link now gizmo, but glad to hear that it's not anything worse, and hoping for a nice silent case with no adverse affects on anyone. Please try not to be depressed .

OP posts:
LaTrucha · 17/02/2010 12:10

GIzmop - I'm glad it looks better this morning. I can understand you feeling down about it. You've had a few weeks now of 'wait and see,' haven't you? I hope Friday makes things seem brighter.

Chestnut - I'm gla dyou had such a positive experience of being horribly ill!

minimoonumbertwo · 17/02/2010 14:04

georgee Isla is beautiful, has always been my number one girls' name!

filly hope you had a lovely pamper (well apart from the waxing!) day, and how on earth do you self induce with castor oil???

meggy I'm so sorry, so so horrid for you and awful to watch a friend go through something like that.
