Morning ladies

Anna so glad your DH is back and thanks for the tip of the day . I must say I too have used the power of massive pregnancy boobs to have my wicked way with my DH . It's great that your DH was able to get back on Thanksgiving.

On the third trimester, there are various ways of calculating it (development/gestation/conception) and my favourite pregnancy book (this one) says the third trimester is from just before 27 weeks. I'm 26 + 3 so have decided I'm just about there (I've read the whole book by now anyway!!).

Mummyelk glad you're emerging back into the land of the living. Hope you and your DD are back to full fitness soon

P&P waves hello! I was wondering where you were . Hope you're coping with the SPD better now you're on maternity leave.

Pixie I'm glad that Dalrymps (and Pacific) could reassure you about the benefits of breathing easier for your LOs by using the inhaler. Hope it gets better soon.

Manda how awful for you. I'm so glad you're home, but it's just so unfair that you've yet more to worry about. You always seem so upbeat, so please do feel free to vent/rant/get feelings out on here whenever you want. We're all here for the long haul, for the good bits but also for the bad bits. That spatone stuff looks fab so probably worth giving it ago. I may even consider it despite having no idea about my HB levels...

Pacific oh lady, I love your advice! I bet you're a great GP face to face. Though sorry you had such a stressful day the other day...especially that poor young girl who lost her baby. Glad the anti-bs are working and hope you enjoyed that glass of vino

Jashook and Afribaby hello and welcome! I love when lurkers de-lurk and join in the fun. The more the merrier!

Afribaby if your airline is happy to fly you and you're fit and well then I sounds like a great idea to come back and spend your maternity leave here (will you be in the UK?). Pacific has given good advice (again ). Out of curiousity, are you advised to do anything special to reduce malaria risk while pregnant (am sure you do everything you can anyway!). And also ([nosy emoticon]) what country are you in? I have a hankering to visit Botswana some day (oh to see the Okavango delta!) so am wondering if that's where you are

Shroomer ah, the shoelace gymnastics! I do a sort of "sit down and place ankle on opposite knee" thing that is starting to feel vaguely yoga-tastic. My latest is finding it hard to dry my legs after the shower...lots of comedy balancing and leaning against things since bending over is increasingly not an option

Swings hope you get your bin soon (6 weeks is ridiculous!) though am glad that at times of crisis like this you turn to Blue Peter for inspiration

Designerbaby sorry they couldn't pinpoint a cause of the pain, but glad the emergency appointment was "only" two hours . I use bump bands, just the fabric ones and particularly recommend the H&M one, as it's a bit tighter than my topshop ones, but I saw this belt in JoJoMamanBebe the other evening which looks a lot more supportive.

Tigress leaking colostum - how cool! It's amazing how our bodies are changing (beyond the obvious bump!).

Smac how scary about the falls for you and your DD. Those mouth injuries are awful for bleeding, which must have been panic stations at the time.

IWCAS hope you enjoyed your birthday as much as you could in the circumstances.

Big waves to Arcadie Sarah EmLou BPM Heckle and everyone I've not named. Hope everyone is well and looking forward to the weekend.

I'm so glad it's Friday . I'm meeting up with my sister at Selfridges tonight, as she's taking my two nieces (5 and 2) to see Santa so am expecting them to be up to 90 with excitement! Then we've got a big Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow night, cooked by one of my best friends who's American (so my American DH loves it!). At my antenatal class last night I got major brownie points from the teacher from being the only one to mention maternity towels for post-baby hospital bag (all thanks to you ladies ). I also must really crack on with getting Christmas cards sorted and present buying underway this weekend.

Shroomer · 27/11/2009 11:42

Hi all,

Caitni - you truly are an interactive, all-inclusive MN participant! At almost 25 weeks, I too have started to put my ankle onto the opposite knee to tie my shoelaces.

A quiet word with those of you who have colds, STOP SNEEZING IN MY DIRECTION. Thanks. I now, sniff, have a cold, sniff. I may not be able to take lemsip, but I have found that I can take chocolate. More specifically, I ate half an advent calendar yesterday. They never last into December.

Arcadie · 27/11/2009 12:46

Hey all

AfriBaby and JasHook Hi and welcome. Glad we've kept you amused over the last few weeks. Hope you get flights and the like sorted afri I have to say about flights as my last one was a good year before my first DC!

Manda Some ladies just have all the fun in pregnancy! can also thoroughly UNrecomend ferrous sulphate tablets. (Ohhhh how poorly I was on those) and totally RECOMMEND Spatone as well. Great stuff. Wash it down with a little orange juice as the vit C gets more iron into your system. All good. Got me up from an HB level that was incompatible with homebirth to a nice normal one again. (Wearing my "I heart Spatone" tee-shirt today)

Annamama So pleased you've got DH back again! Now put some clothes on in your facebook picture. You're making me feel cold.

Shroomer I find drying my feet after a shower is the most uncomfortable part so far.... tying shoelaces not such a prob yet. But then I'm only 23 weeks so nowhere NEAR 3rd Trimester.

News from the land of the chief lentil weaver....

Can't sleep. Well I caaan but only between 6 and 8am it seems. Remember this only too well with DS's pregnancy. Keep waking up at 3 / 4ish and not being able to get back to sleep. GRUMBLE. Any advice? First person to suggest that it's nature's way of getting me used to sleep deprivation will get a note in their planner sent to MN towers.

And had a lovely time yesterday with my local GP who was using my extensive knowledge of pregnancy and nicely rounding peanutbutter bump to teach med students their first lessons in Obs and Gynae.

Med Student 1: Hi Mrs Arcadie. What's your full name?

RKD: Becki Arcadie ( not really)

Med Student 1: What can I call you?

RKD: Becki's fine.

MS1: Can I ask you some Qs about your pregnancy?

RKD: Fire away

MS1: How did it all start!?

RKD: really? You REALLY want to know (Med Students 2 & 3 snicker quietly into their clipboards) Well MS1.... When a Mummy loves a Daddy very much they have a special cuddle....

MS1: (Looking and generally aghast.) Oh yes. I remember we were warned not to phrase the question like that .... (mumbles) sorry.....

RKD: No problems!

Such fun......

Sariska · 27/11/2009 13:19

at your medical student anecdote, Arcadie. Brilliant!

Colostrum, Tigresswoods, yeah, I think I have it too. In fact I think that's what my DS is forcing himself to drink in the dark early morning hours when he thinks it's time to get up and I don't. (Does not having fully weaned a 20-month old make me sound like a fully-paid up member of the lentil weaving club? The not-weaning thing is not my choice. DS has strongly resisted all attempts to direct his attentions at that time of day to a sippy cup. Don't know what I'm going to do when DC2 appears. I'm not averse to tandem feeding but am wondering about the timing of it all. E.g. say DS wants to feed at 6ish, what then happens when DC2 wants her feed an hour or two later? Will there be any milk left? Will I have to let DS scream it out until DC2 has had her fill? Questions, questions.... Anyone with any experience of tandem feeding, please speak up now.....)

As you say, annamama, March does seem scarily close now. Especially since I worked out that I have only 31 working days before mat leave begins. Trouble is, my "to do" list looks like it could comfortably fill a year.

Oh, the Okavango delta, Caitni. That's somewhere I too really want to visit. I fear, though, it will have to wait a few years now. Safaris are not exactly child-friendly, and Okavango is ££££££ and still £££ if you're happy to bush camp (which I am as there's nothing like it ). Still, your post has now got me daydreaming about Africa. I've been a few times and would love to have the chance to go again one day.

If you do come back to Europe for your baby's birth Afribaby, maybe you might get an upgrade on the plane . It happened to me once in India - totally randomly as far as I could tell but maybe advanced pregnancy would prompt check-in to bump you up and ...er.... give your bump more room.

Welcome to Jashook, and "hello" to everyone else, particularly those who are under the weather. Hoping you all feel better soon.

MandaHugNKiss · 27/11/2009 14:32

I'll start by welcoming newly de-lurked Jashook and Afribaby - as has already been said afri, you need to check with specific airlines about their regulations/requirements (ie 'fit to fly' cert froma doctor). But it sounds like a good idea for you to be in the UK if you have a support network here.

annamama I'm laughing at your seduction technique; you minx, you! But aren't pregnancy boobs just the best (bump and colostrum leaks (perfectly normal, tigress) nonewithstanding)? DP regularly comments on how fantastic mine are and considering I am usually an A cup and am currently sporting a firm full C he's loving it. Ah, sweet irony to be sporting this rack and banned from sex until (I'm being positive - until) this placenta moves itself.

shroomer It's understandable you've eaten half an advent calendar in one fell swoop. Those tiny pieces of chocolate (are they even chocolate? They have a waxy consistancy that makes me wonder...) aren't even big enough to satisfy a child, let alone a pregnant woman with a cold. You may have to invest in some heavy duty chocolate. Maybe green & blacks, a huge box of thorntons... or just one of those massive slabs cadburys do (I like the one with the little bits of crunchy all through it!) Go on - you're worth it! Also no problems for me with shoelaces - but that's because I live in my uggs right now. You don't even need to bend over to put them on, let alone squash baby to reach your tootsies to adjust and do up. Oh, and isn't 'tieing' what all the kids in a race will achieve these days when it comes to sports day? :P (heh, check out pixies nostalgtastic thread in chat 'what nice things do you remember from primary school that wouldn't happen today')

Speaking of pixie hope DD is enjoying her rediscovered mobility now the cast is off, that you're not still spending every waking hour going to, coming from or waiting outside of ballet, and that the twins are doing very nicely, thankyouverymuch Have you considered this new treatment shroomer has discovered for a cold? Give it a try, and feel better soon

pacific Thanks for the comiserations/advice. I'm in a bit of a quandry re: my falling hb as my mum has haemachromatosis and nags me about being tested because her consultant always asks if her children have been checked. My problem is the GP I saw didn't think there was a need to be checked as a) being of menstrual age, even if I did have it, it wouldn't pose a problem or even necessarily be picked up by a blood test for that reason and b) I was asymptomatic (although he conceeded that doesn't mean I'm clear). I mentioned it to my midwife at booking and she didn't really seem to know what I was talking about (can't blame her, it's not an everyday thing, really) and when I told her the gp wasn't concerned abut testing me she dismissed it as irrelevant. I guess what I'm saying (kinda think-typing as opposed to thinking aloud here!) is that you're right I should ask for my ferritin levels to be checked as I understand it's those that are the problem once they are high and the iron is being stored in organs. Eh, I'm probably frettin' for no reason and don't 'have it' anyway, but can't help wondering how do you supplement iron if your body doesn't want to utilise it, but store it instead? Bah. They made me an appointment to see my consultant on Tuesday (first time seeing her, so I must train my pregnancy-brain to remember to ask then) meanwhile, I'm buying spatone later today. I don't suppose it will really hurt me if I have it for a few days then am advised to stop. Ah, and am completely with you re: repeatedly taking ab's when pregnant. Up until a few weeks ago I'd not even succumbed to paracetmol. Now I've chugged two lots of abs (the one I'm taking now is apparently contraindicated in the first tri which makes me even more ), co-dydramol, paracetamol. I know they're all 'safe' but it just goes against the grain.

IWCAS So, so sorry you're having to deal with such a sudden passing of a friend.

smac just to clarify, you and DD weren't at tumble tots, right? . Aw, I'm sorry, I shouldn't jest - When DD was about 6/7 she smashed her mouth on a bench in the playground a day before her school photographs... I'm glad it happened at school (if it had to happen anywhere) as I'm sure there would have been a few raised eyebrows. As you say, though, mouth injuries tend to look more shocking than they actually are. Mind you, she broke her arm there too, twice. And DS broke his collarbone there... OMG! I'd better homeschool this one and wrap him in cotton wool! :p

Seriously, hope you've both fully recovered.

DB given your symptoms and myself showing all the symptoms and some physical sign of infection, yet no cultures grown from sample, plus pacific confirming no culture doesn't mean no infection, I'd be sorely tempted to return to your GP (or another one in the practice if he/she is not very sympathic) because I'd hate for you to end up writhing around in agony the way I was. Yes, we DO have to expect niggles (pains even) from ligaments, etc, but how frustrating for you to know your body well enough (particularly when not a first pregnancy), know it's not 'right' only to be dismissed. Please persevere with trying to get some treatment if it hasn't eased yet.

swings lol at your blue peter thoughts. True story - the nurse at my primary was 'Mrs Ellis' - Janet Ellis's mum! I wonder if it was that connection that seemed to have our school forever collecting stinky milk bottle caps to 'buy guide dogs'. Incidently, when I was in secondary school, I used to pass Janet on her school run with her children - funny to think the little girl I saw her with grew up to be Miss Sophie Murder-on-the-dance-floor Ellis-Bextor. Uh, what I actually meant to say before falling into reminiscing was: hope you get a new recyclying bin forthwith! Certainly before christmas (oh, all the wrapping paper!).

caitni We appear to be going head-to-head in the 'write the wordiest posts ever' challenge. I believe you're a nose ahead just now, but once I'm back up to speed, believe me, I'll waffle on and on as usual until you're cowed into the silver medal position (and thanks so much for the encouragement/well wishes )

Ah, arcadie I've just seen that you've posted as I compose this post... Your wicked sense of humour would have me spitting whatever it was in mouth all over the laptop if there was anything in it. Luckily, there isn't! You can uarantee the MS has learnt a valuable lesson. Well done you!

As for me, eh, I guess this is karma biting my arse setting me straight for having rampant sex all the way through until a few weeks ago. I guess it is unbecoming of a mother-to-be. I miss it though!

If spatone warrents a t-shirt, it's gotta be Good Stuff. I spoke to DP not long after starting to type this and he's popping into boots for me to take advantage of the 3 for 2 offer.

to anyone I've missed - I'm not top of the pops, still, and it's completely unintentional (especially considering this challenge caitni and I are engaged in...). Hope everyone has a good weekend. I've cancelled the plans I had for dinner/cinema tonight as it was in leicester square and traipsing across london twice, alone, in the darrrrk (with murders and the like!) feeling as I do is probably not the best idea. I just hate that I seem to be cancelling on people all the time.

Oh my, forgot to mention I purchased a bugaboo from ebay the day before I was admitted. Paid for it as the auction ended, then vanished into the ether. I emailed the seller last night re: collection but heard nothing as yet. Hmmm.

Caitni · 27/11/2009 14:51

Manda I doff my hat to you my wordy friend - I love your long posts so am glad you've time to get back on here properly

Have NO motivation for work this afternoon...seriously wish I could just leave for the day and tis not yet 3pm

PacificDogwood · 27/11/2009 16:14

Gosh, you are all very productive posters, I am impressed!

Arcadie, I just love your response to poor innocent medical student, I am howling (well, internally howling as I am at work..) .

Manda, ha, haemochromatosis, deffo get your ferritin, free iron, TIBC (total iron binding capacity),and while your at it, your HFE gene tested. Here are my reasons why: if you have haemochormatosis it is important you know about it and can be monitored by blood test about annually. If you do not have it but are a carrier of the gene you may pass it on to children and the time may come when they are older they may wish to consider their own test. If you do not have it AND you are not a carrier you can stop fretting, gobble down iron in any shape or form (warning: Irn Bru does not actually contain iron !) and watch your Hb go up, yeah!

Right, I better get off MN before my colleagues catch me (whispers: first quiet Friday afternoon in weeks and weeks, keep your fingers crossed it stays like this til 6)!

DB and anybody else who always seems to be able to address virtually everybody personally: how the heck do you do that??

AfriBaby · 27/11/2009 16:22

Evening all,

Just got back from a work trip incl. lots of bouncing off-road driving - can you get a stitch in your bump? Would love some kind of "hover seat" installed in the car. Sigh.

Pacific Thanks for the advice - flight about 10 hours, but travelling time in total will be lots more. But I think this is a risk I'm willing to take - I have heard too many horror stories of births here! Even in the private hospitals... luckily will have DH accompanying me on the flight.

Caitni I always sleep under a treated mosquito net, cover up in the evenings, use mosquito repellent coils and all pregnant women are advised to take malaria prophylaxis - which I now do. Difficult decision cos if you read up on malaria prophylaxis manufacturers always say 'not for use in pregnant women' - but we decided getting malaria would be worse (and chances of that are high when you live here).

And here is Zambia, though I also lived in Botswana as a child - both countries well worth a visit. If anyone ever needs any 'safari with baby' advice, get in touch - once this one is here, I can tell you all about it.

Apologies for only responding directly to ladies who 'talked' to me (I hope I didn't forget anyone) - some of you clearly have amazing skills in keeping everyone's news/issues/questions in mind and responding to all but I can't! Wishing those of you feeling bleeurgh a speedy recovery, to ladies still getting some (my DH, whilst impressed by my new size E (!!) bosoms is entirely freaked out by whole shagging a pregnant lady thing) and friendly waves to everyone else.

Pingpong · 27/11/2009 16:32

pacific I think they must sit down at the computer and take notes so they don't forget anyone. I occasionally scroll back up to see what has been said immediately beforehand but can never remember to mention everyone can't find a pen and paper to take notes!
manda good to see you back and catching up so conscientiously!
Hope things calm down for you.
annamama glad your DH is home and you got some action, nice tip of the day but I'm so not in the mood I'm hiding my enormous boobies under a t-shirt! Currently wearing my nursing bras from DD which are a shocking 40F so god only knows what I'll be in when my milk comes in.
I remember leaking colostrum last time - the 10p sizes stains sounds very familiar. Haven't had it yet this time, think it happens at night as you are squashing your boobs with your arms when you sleep where as during the day they have more freedom!
Welcome newbies on late flying.
Can't remember the last time I tied a shoelace. I go from slippers to pull on boots to wellies for dog walking and back to slippers. Have no plans to tie a lace for a long time.
Good friend gave me some spatone when I had low BP as she recommended it. I took it a couple of times, it is more gentle than iron tablets but I still felt a bit congested, not a feeling I enjoy. Worth a try though.

hecklephone · 27/11/2009 16:59

Hello all

Just thought I'd check in and wave at everyone, especially newly-revealed lurkers

arcadie LOL at your medical student conversation - genius.

manda pacific db shroomer and anyone else who's under the weather - hope you're all feeling better soon. I'm still a bit sniffly and getting rid of the remnants of my cold but feeling more or less back to normal. It's rubbish feeling ill when you're also pg - as if we didn't have enough to contend with!

And I'm definitely another who employs the 'ankle on opposite knee' shoelace-tying technique. Either that or I put on slip-ons!

I got some good news the other day - the local college has asked me to teach a couple of media studies classes for them. I'm quite excited and glad of the regular work - but also a bit apprehensive about facing a class of 16/17 year olds as I've never taught before! Any tips welcome from Arcadie or anyone else from the world of education?? It's only 6 hours a week but this term runs right up to 6th March - the day after my due date! So it remains to be seen how close to the end of term I'll be able to work. I'm keen to be accommodating and hopefully they'll ask me back after mat leave, but if DD2 decides to make an early appearance I'm afraid the students will have to cope without me!

Wishing everyone a healthy, relaxing, chocolate-filled weekend (here's hoping!)

annamama · 27/11/2009 17:48

If you want to address people by name, just have a few different windows open and it's easy to read back and write at the same time!

I have Adidas trainers with velcro instead of laces, hate laces even when not pg!

So many posts... I will catch up better some other time. Have a nice weekend fatties!

(PS. Arcadie, I changed my FB pic as I was feeling cold too.)

Shhhhhhh, annamama! Way to burst the bubble! I preferred it when I was considered a genius for being able to remember all and address everyone with their issues by name with total Rainman recall. Now I'm merely just 'computer literate' at best and 'good at scrolling' at worst :P Mind you, I do find that with the method you mention, I start a post and then do something else, then come back to it, then do something else, until eventually I've been typing my post for over an hour and there are new posts I miss! I got around that today by refreshing my 'threads I'm on' page before posting to check there were no more posts... there were! I'm an excellent driver.

Oh! Oh, ho ho! I see your game caitni! Cosying up to me so that I fall into a false sense of security thinking 'Aw, she's, like, my friend'... next thing you know my foot's off the pedal and you race ahead. I'm onto you! (heh. I love to 'read' you too )

Good to see you! Ooh, you're going to be a lecturer. People are very impressed by that, you know? Well, I am. Congrats!

Afraid I don't really have much advice other than I think you'll have to choose between seeming being quite 'no nonsense' with high expectations of them (that they rise to) or being more of a cool, 'friend' teacher who just expects them to do their best all most of the time. Or, of course, there's the controversial 'third way' where you intimate that you know gangsters who would happily maim or kill for you. Maim or kill anyone who pissed you off... You will also probably have to learn a whole new language just to understand them as they talk amongst themselves (when talking to you they will no doubt do a good impression of English though). My DD is nearly 15 and I've picked up an awful lot of the 'lingo' through her - I'm quite conversant so will be happy to translate for you . Seriously, sounds great - I hope you have a blast and are asked back

PacificDogwood · 27/11/2009 21:48

Oh, oh , where is Pixie's featured thread?? Ooohhh, I finally "know" MN royalty !

Quiet evening is being enjoyed here .

I think I will still never be able to address everybody personally, attention span of a gnat + preg brain = not good!

MandaHugNKiss · 27/11/2009 22:07

Pacific - ten pages (so far) of nostalgic goodness right here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/867870-What-nice-things-do-you-remember-from-your-Primary-School

PacificDogwood · 27/11/2009 22:28

scarysarahandco · 28/11/2009 07:40

hi everyone xxxx welsome to all our new members too,

Shroomer · 28/11/2009 09:41

hecklephone My tip is to make sure that you don't end up working for the minimum wage with your 6 hours of teaching. They should be paying you a set amount of preparation time, and extra if there's any marking to do. Keep it interactive. I haven't taught them as young as that, so can't offer specific advice. I used be a uni lecturer until I saw sense and left (thought I wish I'd stayed and got maternity leave).

annamama top tip to have a couple of screens open at the same time! Doh, why didn't I think of that?

BusyMissIzzy · 28/11/2009 10:03

Hi everyone; de-lurking briefly to say that I've just changed my nickname. Was KarenAdie, but changed to, well, something that's not my actual name (although have just negated the anonymosity (?) by telling you all... And you probably don't remember me introducing myself anyway because I've been incredibly rubbish and haven't participated since Anyway, still due March 5th, live in N. London, and having a girl (according to 20w scan anyway)
Tigress I had nipple leakage the other day too, and wasn't expecting it this early! DH noticed my PJ top was wet, and then the next day I had a small stain (hmm, typed "wee stain" there, but that could be misinterpreted..) on my bra too.

BusyMissIzzy · 28/11/2009 10:53

By the way, for those of you who've done this before - did yours generally arrive early, on time or later than the due date?

Hope everyone is having a good weekend, Nutella has just reappeared here in Zambia, and I am ridiculously excited. Hmm...chocolate on bread.

hecklephone, good luck with the teaching job. Rather you than me though . My dad was a Secondary School teacher and then university lecturer and I know would have loved for one of his kids to go into teaching. And much as I did not have a clue what to do with the rest of my life when I left school I was quite certain I did not wish to teach. Poor kids, if I had decided otherwise! I have great memories of inspiring teachers and admire anybody who has the patience to teach greatly. Good luck with your new job.

Afri, oh, you should not have said Nutella, now I am drooling. I try not to buy it because it never lasts very long - nothing at all to do with eating it with a spoon , oh no...

My horrid cystitis flared up again last night even though I was still on ABs, gah! I thought I was fine, but no, apparently. So now I am on a different lot of ABs and much as I know they are safe in pregnancy, I still just do not like taking them. Wee sample sent to lab (hand delivered as it is Saturday) to see if they can pin these horrible bugs down.

Other than that quiet Saturday here. I went and picked up a rather lovely handtied Advent Wreath from a friend who makes them, so tomorrow we will light the first candle. 3 more to go and it will be Crimbo! How scary is that...

Have a good one, all of you.

Hecklephone Ohhh exciting work! I find that 16/17 yr olds, particularly ones who've chosen to be studying are a little blasé but mostly well behaved. Set them an easy-ish, short-ish assignment early on, with a short hand-in date. That way you'll get the measure of who's punctual, who can't be arsed, who decorates their page with smiley faces over the "i"s and who's a super super super swot ( me generally). Secondly set them a research topic with a VERY short word limit and see how many you get back that are copied and pasted from iMDb or Google! Fret not about working up to your due date - my mate just went on mat leave, got bored and went back to teaching for a couple more weeks, had the baby just hours after her last lesson of the day and went back to school 2 weeks later. You will, however manic, not be as mad in the head brave as that!
