Hi everyone

I had my scan yesterday. Was a late one (scheduled for 5pm, but didn't get in until almost 6) and so I spent the whole day a little on edge! The sonographer seemed to really take his time with everything too, I think it must have taken at least 40-50 mins all up. All was good though. I have a very, very active little GIRL! She didn't stop moving the whole time (which is what the midwife said when she tried to find the heartbeat at the 16 week app).

Quick question though for those of you in the know. At the end of the anomaly scan, I was offered an internal scan to check the length of my cervix, which I wasn't expecting. As it came at the end of a very long day (was almost 7pm by the time he finished) I declined, but now wondering whether I should have? This is my first baby - is it usual to have this checked?

Congrats to others who had their scans yesterday - Puree, Manda, Anna and TMD - and goodluck to TLC today and IWCAS for Thurs & everyone else waiting.

Pacific, i hope you are feeling a little better!

IWCAS - I read your post about your work situation on the Pregnancy board a few days ago, it sounds like a nightmare. I hope things improve for you Same for you Mummyelk.

Welcome to the new people!

Tigresswoods · 28/10/2009 13:17

Hey walnut8 I have not heard of the checking the cervix length thing. Are you particularly short or tall?

It sounds odd but I once had a smear test where the nurse started by saying, "You are quite tall, I'll use a long spatula"

Actually I didn't then have that smear, i went a bit to pieces (I was 19) and left without having done the smear.

For the record am fine with them now but I always remember that as being a really weird thing to say.

ilovegreenbeans · 28/10/2009 13:25

Hi girls!
Haven't been on for ages- went away, new thread got started, by the time I'd managed to catch it up I didn't have much to say

But we had our scan today too and it was so lovely! We had a student in with the sonographer and so got to see everything twice! Baby looks just like DD did at her 20 week scan amazingly!

Glad to hear all the good scan results and good luck for the rest of you this week.

Arcadie · 28/10/2009 13:53

Congrats Annamama (or apparently "Grattis") and what does "trippelmoster" mean? And what language is it!!!!??

Caitni · 28/10/2009 14:23

Afternoon ladies

Congrats on all the good scans! And am hoping that all those with low lying placentas get better news when they have their re-scans.

Tigress what a weird thing for a nurse to say before a smear . Height/width has nothing to do with length of cervix!

Walnut a scan to see your cervix length isn't routinely offered at the moment as far as I know. But there are parts of the country that are trialling it I think. Prof Nicolaides (sp?), he of the Foetal Medicine Centre/Kings College and nuchal fold test fame, has done research that shows a short cervix is an indicator of increased risk of premature delivery. I don't know much about it but a friend from another thread is currently holed up in hospital in Switzerland, where's she's on bed rest to prevent the early delivery of her twins due to a shortening cervix. It seems like the Swiss doctors are much more clued up about cervix length than in the UK (she had no one mention it in the UK before she moved over at 23 weeks).

Sorry to waffle on (can you tell I'm typing this quickly at work ) but I'm sure short cervixes aren't something the vast majority of us need to worry about. I have a particular interest as my mum had 5 second trimester m/cs due to an incompetent cervix, apparently, so had a cervical stitch, "bed rest" (impossible with 4/5 older kids) and planned c-sections at 38 weeks with myself and my younger sister - my worry was that I may have a genetic risk but my obstetrician told me not to worry.

Big waves to everyone and best of luck to all those still waiting for their scans.

PS IWCAS sorry to read about your work stresses but, inspired by you, I worked out how many working days til my maternity leave and it's 69 (after today). Am already on the count down!

annamama · 28/10/2009 14:53

Thanks! It's swedish. Trippelmoster means triple aunt which my youngest sister will be.

I'm now over my disappointment at not having a boy and am really looking forward to having our new little girl! At the scan DD (18 months) was lying next to me while DH tried to explain that what she saw on the screen was a baby and it's inside mummy's belly. Not sure if she really understands but later she looked deep in thought and said "mummy belly baby". I think that was her first 3 word sentence! [proud mum emoticon]

DB - I hope the aliens bring back your well behaved toddler soon!

Tigress - gosh that is a REALLY weird thing to say. That's enough to freak anyone out!! Thanks for the info too Caitni Sounds like it was part of some research/trial. I have already been subjected to additional blood tests after agreeing to be part of some trials. It wasn't very well explained though. The sonographer did say it was used as an indicator of preterm labour but it occurred to me afterwards that he didn't say whether it was common to have a short cervix and therefore was an important test ... also didnt say what would happen if I did have a short cervix and whether anything could be done to prevent the preterm labour! I guess it was late in the day ... he did seem a bit half-hearted in his offer, and I was dying to get out of there and go to the loo (and not eager to have an internal scan).

Thanks for adding me anna

And congrats ilgb and summer2008 ! will add you to the list summer:

annamama lol at my involuntarily status!
congrats to those of you who have had great scans this week

I had my cervicial length checked at 16 weeks - because I have had a cone biopsy and diathermy in the past. All was fine, but they would've offered a stitch if it was incompetent.

Also, Tigress the height/ long speculum comment when going for a smear was familiar to me too - I wonder what that is about? Ive never thought about it before!

I told a resident at work i was pregnant today and they said 'are you pleased?' WTF? clearly they werent too pleased when they had their DC, or something!?!

Spooky!

Or, y'know, not. I'm not superstitious at all

rebeccacad · 28/10/2009 18:37

Thanks for the good moving wishes and I really feel for you BPM. Can't believe my vibe0sending hasn't worked so far, will re-double my efforts.

Shocked at the spatula comment! Noone has mentioned cervix length checking to me, but I dimly remember reading on another thread that this is common in another country (France perhaps???).

Summer congrats on a boy!

Am loving our new place to bits already - moving was a nightmare but being in is great, so anyone in the process hang on in there!

TakeLovingChances · 28/10/2009 18:39

Hello all,

I had my scan today :-) Baby would not stop moving at all! It is the most active baby ever!

My DH and mum came with me, and mum got a bit teary.

All looks healthy and well, heart and all is beating fine.

No idea what sex the baby is, it wouldn't stay still long enough for us to see, and DH didn't want to know anyway, he wants it to be a surprise.

They took a urine sample, but that was all. No idea if they should have tested my blood pressure or anything else, but that was all they did.

Makes me even more eager for the next scan (at 30 weeks) and much much more eager for the birth!

Evening, all, just a quickie : Congratulations on all the good scan results. And another boy, yeah!

Walnut, I think the cervix measuring thingy is very much a continental thing, but is getting trialled here, as mentioned above.

I have ordered bump bands and now cannot wait for them to arrive. I am still in normal but huge trousers at work as I had lost weight just in time to become fat pregnant again, LOL!

Also, thanks for good wishes, I am feeling better, about time too! But had bad and extraordinarily loooooong day at work, so had to reward myself with a fish supper . Followed by a Predaday capsule, does that count as a vegetable? Or will the tomato sauce I had do?? Oh well, will do better tomorrow - maybe...

Night, all.

PennyScotia · 28/10/2009 22:13

Hello - I've just found this thread I'm due on 20th March and have my 20 week scan on Tuesday. It'll be great to see the baby again but I'm still a bit anxious that something might be wrong (my AFB blood results still aren't back from the lab). I'm sure it will be fine

Congratulations to everyone who has already had their scan!

Summer2008 · 28/10/2009 23:27

Arcadie - I have requested to join the group. Thanks for reminding me of the name.

PennyScotia- Goodluck with the scan i think its quite common to feel anxious before, i know i did and was relieved all was ok.

Arcadie · 29/10/2009 08:49

Hi PennyScotia I assume you are "PH" on the MN Facebook group.

And Summer2008 are you "LK"? Reply on Facebook if you'd rather have more anonymity here.

(Love a bit of cloak and dagger me)

Morning all - congrats on yet more lovely scan results.

I am as I still have a week and a half to wait for mine. So much for being due in the middle of March......

scarysarahandco · 29/10/2009 08:50

Hello everyone.

welcome to our newvies, congrats on all the fantastic scans were all having abd good luck to thouse with theirs coming up,

Not really much to add here, ds is on half term and we ahev been out and about doing things all very good, but god i am tired!!!LOL

Hope everyone is keeping ok and not to ill with alkl the colds and flu going around,

Spk soon x

when is everyone planning on mat leave? i am finisheing at xmas- (purely due to DD's operation being in jan so i dont want to have to take any time off unpaid etc and there is no chance i could carry on at work and deal with all that so i will finish xmas eve and have a realxing christams with family) it just seems so early to finish at 30 weeks but the most practical thing for me and for work given the situation

TakeLovingChances · 29/10/2009 09:40

Scarysarah I'm in 2nd year of my degree, and planning to take a good stretch of time off with the baby. I hand in a big assignment project on 5 January 2010 and that's me free from uni until January 2011 when I go back and pick up where I left off :-)

The day I hand in that project I would love to cartwheel down the street towards my house.... but the big bump might get in the way!

Very very very much looking forward to that day!

Caitni · 29/10/2009 10:28

Sarah sounds like a good plan for your maternity leave, as having work on top of everything you're dealing with in Jan would be a nightmare!

I'm taking my official maternity leave from 24 Feb 10 (I'll be 39 weeks) but my last day in the office is 12 Feb (37 weeks), so I can use up my annual leave. I think I'll be able to handle working til 37 weeks, as my desk-based job isn't very physically taxing and my commute on the tube is short (two stops). I can always switch to taking the bus or overland train if the tube becomes too horrible - both take slightly longer but are much more pleasant (and less crowded!).

IWCAS love your striking through each day!

I've actually just booked my practical driving test for when I'm 35 weeks pregnant. I never bothered to learn to drive before now (for various reasons) but am now obsessed with passing the test before the baby arrives . But late Jan was the earliest I could book it for! Am enjoying my lessons (I have another today - he's picking me up from work so I get to navigate around Kings Cross - fun times!) but I'm hoping the driving examiner in Jan doesn't try to make me do an emergency stop or anything...

MandaHugNKill · 29/10/2009 11:18

Ohh, caitni that's admirable! I also haven't got my license and I was literally about to book lessons when I found out I was pregnant (took a test when I was 17 tht I failed way back in the olden days :p). Then came the months of morning sickness... and now? I dunno, I just think I'll get really anxious when it comes to the test and that won'tbe good for me/baby. Now's a time to avoid unnecessary stress, right? But... I'd love the freedom of a car. Eh, I coped twice before with no car, I'll do it again until I stop procrastinating am in a better position to learn. I'm pretty sure, though, you will still have to do the emergency stop - it's a required compnent of the test.

TLC I'm giggling at the thought of a heavily pregnant woman cartwheeling down the road... What degree are you studying for?

Welcome to penny! I am a member of the fb group too (Amanda Rose - no surprises there, eh?) but the chances of me posting there are none slim because I really hardly ever bother with fb. Just the occasional stalk nose at friends shennanigans, really

Pacific Ketchup is made from tomatoes, that's a fruit! So one of your '5 a day' for sure We can overlook the fact it's jammed with salt and sugar because, well, what are chips without ketchup? Also, pregnacare/pregaday/generic preggo vitamin counts for something... I even convince myself I'm better off with my pregaday DHA supplement each day rather than REAL fish as it comes from a 'virgin' source so I'm not risking all those nasty mercury/pollutants that are apparently an issue in our humble tin of tuna these days.

Nice to see you again rebeccacad! I was wondering where you were.. I'm guessing from your last post that the answer is 'moving'. Ugh, rather you than me, I HATE it! Glad you're settling in well

siamese Some people just have no idea what constitutes 'polite' conversation! Sure, if you're good friends with someone, an 'are you pleased?' is acceptable but an acquaintence/colleague ought to stick to 'congratulations!' or something that doesn't involve you having to reveal innermost thoughts/feelings (unless you're one of those people whom seem to spill their innermost thoughts/feelings to random people... I'm sure you're not though )

anna! Not sure If I've posted anything at you since you hd your scan If I'm repeating myself do forgive me, but hurrah for a second little girl! I so badly wanted ds1 to be a girl so I had a pair of 'sisters'. And it's too cute/amazing that the scan (which you were kinda 'eh' about) has already started DD1 on her road to processing what's happening. REally pleased for you

Walnut I can't believe you turned down the chance for a strange man to stick a probe up your fanjo! I mean, that's what we all want at the end of a long day, surely?! :p

Sheesh. I'm pretty sure I'd have turned it down too. Is it sexist to say I might have considered it if the sonographer was a woman? I mean... I know they're professionals, they do it all day long, blah, blah, blah... but. Y'know? Maybe if alerted to it before it's sprung upon me I'd go ahead for 'educational' or 'trial' reasons and get over Strange Bloke weilding a condom covered dildo probe at me.

Tigress bands sound great! I have a bump, but seem to have lost weight everywhere else so my norml clothes all fit bar being able to do them up. Sounds like they're a great transitional piece.

Funny our babies did exactly the same thing and we both have previa! My jan scan is 25th. Fingers crossed for both of us it's not an issue by the time we get there.

Sariska · 29/10/2009 12:39

Ketchup on chips, Manda? No, no, no, it has to be mayonnaise. (This is not something I have been eating a lot of at all. Oh no.)

Very impressed with the number of people who are still wearing their ordinary clothes. After weeks of whinging that I had no bump, mine popped out almost overnight and it was "bye bye" ordinary clothes and "hello" maternity clothes. My normal clothes do still fit everywhere bar the bump area but bump is already so big that it quickly got to be a joke trying to find tops that were long enough and hide gaping zips etc. Oh, and "grrr" at a certain online seller of maternity wear that actually listed the contents of the parcel on the outside of the package. This totally stymied my attempts to tell DH that it was "just tights". (He thinks I have plenty of maternity clothes from last time round....)

Congrats on more good scan results. By the way, anna, I have a sister very close to me in age just like your DDs will be - and bar the usual to-be-expected sibling squabble we have always got along very well and, especially when younger, when age gaps can somehow seem magnified, really appreciated having a sister so close in age. And I daresay both of them will like riding the white tiger (china? soft and cuddly?) if you bring it home with you. Is it really lifesize?

Hope your DD is being more tractable for you, DB. You have my heartfelt sympathy. I know exactly what that sort of day is like....

Sure there was loads more I was going to comment on but should really get back to work - so "hello" to everyone else, especially all our new joiners.
