Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
maman2tom · 07/10/2009 08:37

Hi everyone all this talk of babies arriving has really spurred me on everything should be ready this weekend. Especially as my MW has officially declared that I'm no longer a high risk pregnancy!! Yeah! Although she promptly ruined the moment by saying nothing was stopping me getting up, running around...DOING THE HOUSEWORK and within earshot of DP. My days of skiving off are over!

Saw the anesthetist yesterday, I said I was planning to put off the epidural till the last minute. She basically laughed at me and said No, last time you had a cs so you'll have an epidural as soon as you get here! This is France and apparently giving birth is some sort of medical emergency requiring me to take lots of drugs, lie on my back with feet in stirrups and do what i'm told!!!!

A question for anyone doing a VBAC what do the consultants say in the UK. Definetly an epidural as soon you get to the maternity??

Tamlin · 07/10/2009 08:38

I love my Phil and Ted's. It is FAB. Also on a pushchair note, we took our rubbish Quinny Zapp with the snapped brake cable back to Mothercare, and since we'd only bought it fourteen months ago, they were happy to send it off for repairs - was pleasantly surprised at how helpful the staff were!

About the HV - I think we only have one for the village, so I don't know how I'd see another one. On the bright side, everybody hates her, so it makes for great bonding sessions at baby groups. When my neighbour went to her for advice about weaning her baby from the breast to the bottle (because she was going back to work, and pumping wasn't really an option) the HV actually told her she shouldn't go back to work! (Never mind the mortgage, deary!)

I did see a replacement for her once who said cheerily to me of DS: 'She's a great weight, you can take her off the scales now!' Since poor DS was lying stark naked with his boy bits about a foot from her nose, she didn't exactly boost my faith in health visitors at all. What kind of training do they get, anyway?

Tamlin · 07/10/2009 08:40

maman2tom, that's really strange. I think they like you to have constant monitoring instead of intermittent for VBACs over here (so that can limit your mobility a bit) but I don't know why that would necessitate an epidural?!

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 07/10/2009 09:00

erica no promo code needed, they just sent me an email so I would be one of the first to know about it, for a change! I was very tempted to buy things for me, and for DD too, but she has a whole new wardrobe apart from a winter coat and some tights and they were not in the sale. I looked at nighties and the such for me to take to hosp, but DH said just because I was having a baby did not mean I had to dress like a victorian and the others were not suitable for breastfeeding. I was Very Good I thought, and spent £33, just enough to get the free postage! I shall keep an eye out for some more deals like this, I think there are more sales due as there are normally ones in October, so I am hoping to get the rest of the stuff in the sales. Now I only need 2 cardies or so and a handful more sleepsuits, nappies for baby and some blankets. Then he is sorted!

kyte that was so restrained of you! But you have other things going on right now don't you?

claire i am not going to have the vaccine. I am not into being a trial, and I have not succumbed to the bug so far, I am willing to take my chances to be honest. I know the biggest risk to us at this stage of pregnancy is that we could get a fever which we have while giving birth - apparently that can potentially cause problems during birth itself, but I am sure diamorphine would sort that out . I have had to have medication this pregnancy due to sickness and acid which I did not really want to take, so I would like to keep the amount of artificial medication in my body to a minimum. That does not mean its not the right thing for you though.

Funnily enough skorpion my immune system is usually pretty bad, I get colds, chest infections, flu, and more horribly sinus infections a lot (those I get at least 3 times a year). But for some reason, although I get sick in other ways when pregnant, I have only had a couple of very minor colds which have been manageable with rest and at worst some paracetamol, last pregnancy I did not get one cold for the entire pregnancy. Also, when I was brastfeeding, I had no colds, coughs, bugs or anything else, and nor did DD until she was 5.5months, when she decided to get a horrible horrible bug just before going to USA, started off as a runny nose and cough. By the time we got on the plane her fever shot up, and mid Atlantic the air stewards did a 'bing bong - any medically trained passengers please make themselves known' - she had a horrible virus and an ear infection, but not sure if the flight caused this, as it can. Then no bugs until she went to nursery at 10 months (then we all got walloped, even DH who never gets sick).

Wow, long post sorry

I need a couple of bits for me - nighties, pants, lip balm, flip flops, couple of towels. DH has plenty of old t-shirts - he even has the one I wore last time until I got to the hospital . DH is at me buying towels, but all ofours are white, I told him it was not appropriate and did he want me to go into the details of why? He got the idea then!

Is anyone planning on having a water birth? I would like to ask for one at the hospital (mainly as we get a bigger room if we ask for it ). I did last time but was not allowed to have one as DD needed constant monitoring. I would like to give it a go this time, mainly for pain relief rather than to give birth in. What do you wear? I mean, I guess my bottom half is naked, do you wear a tankini top? t-shirt?

Laugs · 07/10/2009 09:01

I'm quite excited. We've finally decided what to get DD for her 3rd birthday. We've got a little set of 3 drawers and are going to fill them with arts and crafts stuff. I'm going to a place today that sells supplies to pre-schools, so hopefully can pick up some bargains (I'm quite intrigued, the 'shop' is open for an hour twice a week and the address sounds like it will be in someone's house ). I'm planning to get paints, pens, crayons, chalk, then lots of things for sticking. DH is going to bring a load of scrap paper from work and we'll get nice paper and card too. I'm stealing someone's (sorry, can't remember who) idea to cut out loads of pictures from magazines that she can make collages out of. Oh, I'm going to start collecting junk as well - toilet roll tubes, milk bottle tops etc.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Sorry, that has nothing to do with pregnancy

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 07/10/2009 09:05

not sure what happened there, but my post got all jumbled up - some of it went down to the bottom [weird face emoticon]

Oh Oh - did not say which I should have though, and then I will shut up for a while - our new builder is coming out this evening to pick a key up. He has taken measurements for the doors, and he is going to start work tomorrow to fit them! We should have all our doors back by the weekend, YEY! which means I can paint the frames at the weekend ! I painted the skirting yesterday, and the dado rail, but I could not paint the frames as I do not know which to paint as not sure what he is replacing/covering with what - horrible as we have some lovely white paint and some off white/yellow wood left! .

This time in 2 weeks - we will be rolling and I can start getting our home ready for a baby - ohope he lasts that long

Laugs · 07/10/2009 09:05

pavlov I went in the birthing pool (but didn't give birth in it) and I think I wore a tankini top. T-shirts would get a bit heavy with all that water in them. Or you could go retro with a nice cut-off T?

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 07/10/2009 09:06

laugs sorry x-posted - what an absolutely wonderful idea! she will love it . DD has a craft box, no where as detailed as that, but she loves it. I think its brilliant! When is her birthday?

ursigurke · 07/10/2009 09:12

Laugs, that sounds like a very nice idea. My nephew used to like playing with pieces of fabric and some threads of wool (doesn't sound English but I hope you know what I mean)
Pavlov, I want to be in water as well but rater for labour than for the actual birth. Our NCT teacher recommended wearing something tight or being completely naked. A normal T-shirt would just float. I actually think being completely naked would feel nicer, I'm not sure if a wet top is really comfortable as I suppose your upper body is not always covered with nice warm water.
We are having an introduction evening at the birth centre tomorrow evening, so I hope I'll get some more information

Laugs · 07/10/2009 09:12

Thanks . Her birthday's 2nd Nov, so I have a while to get things ready, but I really want to make it nice with things I have done myself. It has to be a fairly inexpensive present this year, so it will make me happy to know I've spent time and effort on it! Just looking at the price list for the craft shop and it's a bit of a steal. I think I might go mad in there

Laugs · 07/10/2009 09:16

Oh, just had a thought: I might go to a furniture shop and pretend I am interested in buying, so I can get a load of fabric swatches!

Ooh, I love a good project...

ursi I doubt you'd get cold in the water as the whole maternity ward is usually way too hot (to keep the babies warm), plus all that energy you will be exerting. It might be nice to be naked though and feel more like you're in a bath.

Koumak · 07/10/2009 09:32

Good morning all.

Still no news on Broodzilla then. I wonder how they are doing? What is the longest they can leave you after water breaks? 24hrs doesn?t seem that long to be honest.

I am admitting to having 2 bags packed! One is not too big a handall and one is samsonite nappy bag I used for ds. That one is just purely the ?baby? bag with all the nappies, wipes, outfits, blanket etc for the baby including a present for ds. The big one has everything I might need incl. makeup (yeah right!), loads of snacks? and my big fluffy dressing gown that is taking up half of the bag! MUST REMEMBER TO PACK THE CAMERA!

Raggie I am in Finchley, if you?d like to meet up? Wasn?t there sb else from North London too? We could hit Brent Cross together maybe - if just for a coffee?.

Ninja I would love to get my hands on that CD. I had really bad night last night again.

After falling asleep in front of PC before 9pm, I was still fully awake in bed at 11 moaning to dh how fed up I was with being pregnant and wanted the baby out and complaining about work but ignoring his opinions about stopping now etc. pathetic really. Then I think I was up again between 1-2, then ds came in at 4 but managed to take him to toilet and put him back in his bed. Then fully awake till 5.30 when he came back and that point I was actually starting to fall asleep so left him in our bed, after reassuring him there are no monsters inside or outside the house ( I think he could hear the rain) and then had to be up at 6 for work! Can you tell where I am now? I think I am just going to be pretending to be working all day just staring at the screen ? Will start emptying all my desk drawers etc bit by bit in case this baby is actually going to follow mummy?s wishes and arrive on time at least!
37 weeks today.

Pavlov I packed bikini top and a vest for the pool as I would love to use it for distraction rather then the actual birth. But doubt I will actually wear anything. I didn?t last time. In fact I think I was completely naked throughout the whole birth with ds both water and land!

Lovely party ideas. You reminded me I promised ds we were going to make a robot. So had to start collecting those boxes for him instead of flattening them straight into recycling bin! He wants to cover it up with kitchen foil to make him all shiny!

skorpion · 07/10/2009 09:35

laugs that's such a nice idea for a present! Will I remember in a few years' time....? Be sure to remind me, eh?

pavlov great news on the builder! Is that a light I can see at the end of the tunnel?
Even though I don't usually get infections or any lurgies, I didn't go through any childhood illnesses - should be fun once LO's starts nursery...

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 07/10/2009 09:44

I think 48 hours is the longest they like to leave it before a c-section is considered, so they usually induce at 24 hours if natural labour is going to happen, but only if nothing is happening on its own. If she is in proper labour they will try not to intervene even if it goes over 48 hours, as long as it is moving forward. However, i think it does vary from hospital to hospital. If it goes longer than 48 hours (which it might if she is close, say birth is imminent) then they should keep her in for a couple of days to make sure no infection sets in. This is what they did with my friend couple months ago, her waters broke, she had to go in the next day and luckily she started labour herself, and because it was more than 48 hours since her waters broke she was kept in for 2 days, jjust to be sure.

I bet she is snuggling with her new baby as we speak

Trikken · 07/10/2009 09:46

morning!

Am supposed to be cleaning the house as it is one big mess but have just got back from droppping off ds at playgroup and am knackered, so am mnetting and watching JK for half an hour before i get on! was also hoping for news on broodzilla, hope everything is going ok.

BeckyBendyLegs · 07/10/2009 09:51

Trikken I am watching JK too! It's a teary one though...rather than a laugh-at-the-sad-people one.

I'm supposed to be doing work but work is a bit light today so might do some painting instead (oil painting as opposed to painting walls).

I wonder how Broodzilla is doing.

weston · 07/10/2009 09:51

last day at work tomorrow and my birthday, double celebration! really looking foward to it now and hoping baby doesn't decide to arrive early so that i get a month of me me me time, well for some of the week anyway; and off to birmingham to stay in nice hotel and 24 hours of child free time!

just dropped DD off at nursery, went first time last fri and was no prob she loved it today had 20 mins of tears and trauma..oh dear..

would recommend packing light weight dressing gown if any at all as hospitals are really hot

that sounds like a great present idea laugs, someone else mad a dressing up box for xmas which sounds like good idea also

m&s sale is really good, esp for toddler stuff and have started to get more xmas pressies, wish someone else would wrap them as like the buying but hate the wrapping part!

think i am still in denial that there will be a little baby here in 5 weeks or less!

Trikken · 07/10/2009 09:55

BBL Yes, it is very sad. hard watching today.

Weston Ds was like that too when he first started this term but he is fine now, hasnt taken long. your dd is probably having lots of fun, so try not to worry too much.

BeckyBendyLegs · 07/10/2009 10:03

Oh god it is a sad baby story now on JK. I can't do sad baby stories at all these days.

OP posts:
weston · 07/10/2009 10:14

yes baby stories or anything to do with labour are def. channel changers

Trikken · 07/10/2009 10:17

horrible horrible story, gorgeous child tho.

skorpion · 07/10/2009 10:17

weston happy birthday for tomorrow, enjoy your trip. Oh, and send all your presents to me - wrapping is one of my FAVOURITE things!

ursigurke · 07/10/2009 10:19

I think my baby changed position. She used to be head down and back on the right side for weeks but tonight, or even yesterday during the day already I suddenly felt lots of smaller body parts on my right side and can't find her back anymore. And I had unusual back pain yesterday. So maybe she really turned into back to back. (Still hoping she didn't as I didn't get kicks on my left side, it's really only one side and my bump is round not flat). Funnily enough I started to get almost constant heartburn which had become much better already and instead of having this usual constant urge to pee I don't have to for several hours and my bladder can suddenly keep normal amounts again. It's like she moved upwards instead of downwards

weston · 07/10/2009 10:24

thanks skorpion but how can u enjoy wrapping?! maybe u should set up a home wrapping service!!

Laugs · 07/10/2009 10:28

ursi hope she's not back to back. But then if she isn't engaged yet, there's still time to turn again. Hands and knees!

weston happy birthday for tomorrow! Are you going to Birmingham tonight or tomorrow? I'm very jealous of your child-free night away - what a lovely luxury

skorpion I love wrapping, but hard, rectangular things only. Everyone in my family gets books

Right, I'm off to my pre-school supplies shop. Woo hoo! I really am a bit too excited. I think I've missed my vocation in life...
