Coop, good luck. I would be very surprised if the sweep doesn't kickstart you. Be prepared for the hormonal surge!

Mog, if you are dilated (I was 2cm) they will do it if you want (you can say no). You will probably have some sort of reaction to it, whether it is a hormonal release, increased contractions, spotting....all depends on how ready your body is, really, if it is ready the hormones will engage the process, and if it's not it will be like kick starting a motorbike, hearing the engine sputter but not catching to start. Well, that's what happened with me last week. Perhaps if she wiggled things about a bit longer, it would have worked? I don't know. I did have a reaction to it but just not enough to go into labor.

I was also really iffy about the whole thing when it happened as I didn't know exactly what it was until I got home and started asking and looking on the net. I feel much better about it now but not too keen then! So much better though I am planning on asking for a sweep at the end of the week, and begging them to wiggle as long as I can stand it.

Ooooh, that doesn't sound quite as I mean it!!!!

mogwai · 21/06/2005 12:04

woo coop!

Looks like you're gonna have your little bundle within HOURS!!!!! And here's me dangly milky bars at my little angel. Perhaps I'l switch to Farley's Rusks?

The sweep thing doesn't sound so bad according to your descriptions. I should probably take anything they offer, especially as the hospital is 20 miles away and my dh has to take time off work to drive me there. SO do they ask you to go home afterwards? DO I take my hospital bag with me? I have visions of getting home and needing to go back (first baby) straight away.

The little one needs to appear before July 2nd cos I want to see Live8 on TV!!!!!

RoseBerry · 21/06/2005 12:17

Well depending on how dilated you are would depend on what you will be doing. Put the bag in the car but don't expect to be kept in. At 2cm the sweep just released my hormones, no spotting or anything. But you just may start something. It all depends on where your body is at. Given you'll be over, and you are so far away, you may want to phone your team before hand and discuss the options. Maybe they will keep you around, just to see? It couldn't hurt to ask.

LipstickMum · 21/06/2005 12:23

Hello everyone

I meant to find out from Trib how we can update her lovely stats chart while she is away having a baby!!! Anyone else know? Can you just click on it I wonder..?

Mogwai, what do you mean, not hot enough to have an excuse for icecream..?! Since when did we need an excuse You must be due in the same day as me roughly?? The 23rd? If on Tues you'll be 40+5.

Coop, glad things are moving a long for you. At the +10 stage, it really is rather tiresome. Still, your cervix was 'ripe' (what an expression!! I keep imagining mangoes for some reason??!!) and a little bit dilated when you had the sweep, so you're on the right track. good luck to you xxx

it's another gorgeous day here, so I'm off to fill the pool (again!) and do a bit of lounging around

Not often you hear me say that is it!!!

PinkArjuna · 21/06/2005 13:53

Hello
Well I am back home now. I won't try and carch up as I have a sleeping baby in my left arm while trying to type with the right. We are both fine. He is absolutely girgeous and quite a few of the midwives fell in love with him He is a really good baby and only cries when he needs somthing. Breast feeding is going really well despite his traumatic birth.

Congratulations on anyone else how has had their baby - I think I saw Jonah!!

welshmum · 21/06/2005 13:56

Hello all mums in waiting - just wanted to pop over and say I was thinking of you during this hot weather and hoping you weren't too fed up. Don't know if it's any easier having had ds - now I worry about him being too hot. He's 4 weeks old today - I just can't believe it. I will post a photo once I've figured out how to do it.
Love to all - and eat the ice-cream - I still am - it's very good for bfing - as is Green and Blacks - Love Welshie xxx

welshmum · 21/06/2005 13:57

Hey Pink - congrats to you - lovely name too. I bet he's just adorable. Well done you x

PinkArjuna · 21/06/2005 14:30

Oh yeah he has a nice head full of black hair loads of it

MrsWednesday · 21/06/2005 14:36

Pink, you sound so happy. Congratulations on the birth of your son, so glad he's being a good boy so far. Fantastic name you've chosen too.

No news from Bubb, Franniban and Trib yet then? Can't wait to hear from them all.

Cooperoo · 21/06/2005 15:42

Pink - SOOOO good to hear from you and how you and your gorgeous son are getting on. How fantastic that the b/feeding is going so well. Well done on giving it a shot and so glad it is suiting you both. You sound well loved up .
Mog - My sweep was done at the hospital but not where I would deliver so I certainly didn't have any bags etc with me. Not even DH this time actually. I agree that it is an idea to call the hospital and ask them. I would say take a sanitary pad though for after if you have a 20 mile drive home as it can cause spotting. I have been spotting this afternoon and been quite uncomfortable with tummy aches and braxton hicks so hopefully something is happening. The consultant said the sweep can cause the hormones to be released to create the bodies natural proglastin (?) to stimulate labour. He seemed to think something would happen over night if it was going to work so was expecting it to take a few hours at least. I am no expert though.
My friend who is having dd came round this pm to sort the final things out and I do feel much better and organised and much more settled if a little surreal. I have had a couple of teary moments but I think this is the hormones like Roseberry describes.
Roseberry - love your analogy of kickstarting the bike too. What is your career? You should be a writer or journo.
Lippy - So relieved you are doing nothing at last!!! Phew.
Mrs W - Totally agree about the ice cream thing. Will be having Mr Softy ones every day once the bump is here!!
I have repacked all the bags this afternoon as I now feel I have no reason to be disorganised. This evening I will be painting my toes and then getting an early night. Take away for tea too lol. Bye for now.

uwila · 21/06/2005 15:58

ah Pink. Glad you sound well. So what happene with the delivery? How is your recovery? Are you taking Arnica? Did you get some good pain killers? Is anyone helping you out?

PinkArjuna · 21/06/2005 16:06

thanks for the good wishes. I was thinking that more babies would be born in my absents. good luck everyone. I off as I am exhausted.

Oh thanks uwila for letting people know

mogwai · 21/06/2005 16:07

good thinking, yes I'll phone the antenatal clinic before my appointment next tuesday.

Yes, due 23rd! This happens to be my sister's eighteenth birthday as well (BIG age gap!!) so I was kinda hoping it won't happen on that day as I'd like my baby to have his/her own birthday - does that sound weird? Maybe it's just because my sister is Vicky Pollard incarnate!!!!

Been trying to get some rest this afternoon, having indulged in some of that "cream of Cornish" ice cream - bugger it, won't be pregnant for much longer. Couldn't get any sleep though - spent an hour stressing about my mother suddenly wanting to visit us all the time once the baby is born. I know I've moaned about her before, but I just don't know how I'm going to cope with her coming round more than once every three months, as this is how things have been until now. She's been here once since mid december.

She's really never bothered with me at all, which is obviously very hurtful, but it's suddenly all "my grandchild" and that. I think I might even wince at the sight of her holding my baby, such are my feelings . I want this time to be about us and our first child and I think I really need to keep her away from us as she's stressing me out so much even from a distance!!!!

Franniban · 21/06/2005 16:09

hi girls, just a quickie,
Esmee Grace was born this morning at 2.48 weighing 7lb 12oz, just like her brother.
1 hour 50 minutes from 4 cm to delivery, man those rasp leaf tea caps work! Had 2nd degree tear, but feeling fine, and home by midday today. Hospitals are so noisy aren't they.
Esmee is gorgous, and bf going really well.
Will catch up with everyone late,
XX

Good luck for tomorrow Coop if I don't see you before!!

RoseBerry · 21/06/2005 17:11

Just curious, how much pineapple do you reckon is enough to make a difference? Like one pineapple, two, three?

LipstickMum · 21/06/2005 17:12

Lol who knows! I cant even remember what they say is in it that makes a difference... Anyone??

Back to the tennis...

RoseBerry · 21/06/2005 17:13

These are the things we do. Sit around contemplating amounts of pineapple consumption. Spent the afternoon walking down the long hill to the shops and nosing around. Made spicy Mexican beef and added jalepanoes but it didn't seem to be very spicy. Have ate half of one pineapple just now and will be eating the other half soon. But then got to thinking, how much actually has enough of whatever it is to do anything.

Congrats to the new mamas!

charleypops · 21/06/2005 17:34

Blimey Franni - you don't mess about do you? Well done! CONGRATULATIONS!! Lovely lovely name

CONGRATULATIONS BUBBALOO!! Well done for bagging Father's Day - dh must be well chuffed! Probably means he'll never get a card though.. Great name! Does he have pink hair? Sorry you had a traumatic time. Hope you feel better soon and I'll look out for your birth post x x x

Well, I'm 40+5 today, just got back from the antenatal clinic where I saw a registrar. She has booked me in for an induction on the 29th - but I will have to go in the night before to have the pessaries. I wasn't offered a sweep, so I asked for one because I really don't want inducing and so I have one booked for Friday. Apart from the mw who made the appt referred to it as a "STRETCH and sweep" !!! What does that mean?! and the registrar wants to put the baby on an ecg for half an hour or so straight away afterwards. I didn't realise this wasn't routine procedure at the time, but now I'm wondering why - I wished they'd tell you all this stuff.

Tessie/Coop - they didn't say anything about the condition of my cervix - simply booked me in for a sweep. I guess that once they're in there looking around, they might as well do one at the same time? I deliberately asked for a sweep at the hospital rather than with my local mw because she's built like a tractor and has fingers like sausages - maybe I should've stuck with her after all though after what you have both said

Pink - Lovely to see you so soon! sounds like you've fallen in love with your boy already So pleased breast feeding is working well for you so soon xx

Lynny - Hi! how are you?

Mogwai - like Roseberry says I think you should take your hospital bag with you just in case - I took mine today. Like Coop did, you could start contracting withing 5 mins! Lol at your sis being Vicki Pollard Re your mum, why on earth should things be different after you've had YOUR baby? Simply explain you want your own space and point out that she hasn't taken much interest in you up until now and you've managed very well without her thank you very much. I said this sort of stuff to my dad and he really couldn't argue Makes me cross tbh.

Coop - you're sounding very ready (Lippy - I deliberately didn't use the term "ripe" there cos it makes me feel funny) Fingers crossed for spontaneous labour today!

Hope all your toddlers have calmed down a bit today - I think it must be the heat.

Lippy - I've not seen any tennis at all I'm pleased to say, those tennis players are far too clean cut for my taste

MrsF - Wish I was suffering from indigestion - might stop me being such a PIG Lol at your lime green and orange house! During that particular phase I painted dp's stairs in his flat PURPLE. He still brings it up every now and again when he's not sure about any of my design ideas

Coop - I'm sure Mozeralla is usually pasturised - I did remember to check that one!

Roseberry - I empathise entirely with your balloon analogy.

Gweny - I've decided to bite the bullet and have booked dp in for the use of his services later this evening. I've told him to make sure he's good and ready though iykwim. Poor bloke

Uki - hope you feel better today - sound like you're still needing some serious r&r. Those drugs sound really full-on, hope you can get off them soon. Like you say though, thank goodness you were able to take something for that blood pressure.
