Round where I am (in London), the 16 week check is a midwife appointment where they check you're OK (blood pressure, weight) and go through the test results from the bloods you had taken at your booking in. I think it's pretty standard.

Did you get a schedule of appointments when you went to see the GP about being pg? I got one that states when you should have appointments, who they will be with, and whether I need to book them or someone will write to me with them. It doesn't have loads of info on it, but does say things like "scan" or "blood tests".

Mawbroon's right about the heartbeat - by 16 weeks they should be able to pick it up, though it still depends on how much your womb has risen out of the bony pelvic cavity and how the baby is lying. So there's no guarantee.

TheOldestCat · 07/09/2009 14:37

Hello all

Good to see so many of us are feeling less sick, although still very tired.

Like watercress, the 16-week check here is to go through any blood-test results from the hospital and general weight and blood pressure etc.

Sorry to hear some of you are having work problems - hope they get sorted soon.

westlondongirl · 07/09/2009 16:32

Thanks for the info re 16wk check. I didn't get a list from the GP. To be honest I wasn't expecting to go back till the next scan (rookie mistake!). Hope everyone is feeling better. My sickness has all but vanished which feels nothing short of miraculous! I am knackered all the time but I can deal with that. How big is your bump supposed to be at 15 weeks? Mine feels huge! I haven't put on loads of wieght(yet) but look like my tummy has been inflated. How is that possible when it's still so tiny?! Already had to ward of a tummy toucher!

threeplusone · 07/09/2009 18:54

Wow everyone has been very chatty.. had a quick browse through .. sorry. Hope people get maternity pay, jobs etc sorted out. I have been a housewife for 5 years now so really am out of the loop with it allsorry i cant help.

We are in the middle of packing as we move this weekend well we will start moving clothes etc over the weekend then the removals are in next monday (14th) The dog is booked int he kennels for the weekend and have booked DS2 into creche all day next monday.. dont think he is going to be my friend, he normaly goes once a week for 3 hours and when i pick him up you wouold think he hadnt seen me in a month!! Bless him.
Have a scan tommorrow wil be 17+2.. Have quite a bump was asked when I went tot he pictures last night do we need to worry about your waters breaking tonight!!! I sad hope not sti;ll have 5 months tog o lol.. I am not that big yet..

TBH looking firward to the move even more there is a girl on this street a year older than my daughter and has been causing trouble since she got here and over the weekend started on my DD so the quicker i get her away the better.. Unfortunatley I have told her she is not playing out this week so she cant get onvolved in the bitchy comments and tit for tat.. Hopefully things will calm down.. suppose I havea lot more to come.
Anyway hope you are all ok and enjoying the pregnancies..xx

threeplusone · 08/09/2009 14:00

scan went well.. have to go back in 4 weeks as baby still to sma for the detailed scan at 17weeks. Its femur bone is measuring at 19 weeks 4 days, and I am 17+2 Didnt see the sex.

Hope everyones ok xx

mawbroon · 08/09/2009 14:08

Glad your scan was fine threeplusone. I haven't got a date for mine yet, but it will be prob 3 to 5 weeks yet.

I must have been wearing quite baggy clothes before I was pg, because I am still fitting in them. Some are starting to strain around the waist though, and I do think I will have a teeny bump once I make the shift into maternity stuff.

DS has been suggesting names for the baby. I have no idea where he gets them from! He must have heard them before, but I have no idea where!

I am feeling less tired and haven't been nauseous for a couple of weeks now, but I did wretch this morning when my wee niece threw up curdled milk over my sister's shoulder! I'm going to have to get used to that again LOL, saying that, ds was never a sicky baby, so hoping for another like him!

chinook · 08/09/2009 19:41

My dh is the same with names. Particularly boys ones. He won't agree with any that I like. They all seem to remind him of 'some idiot from school/college/work'. The main reason I have agreed to find out the sex at the next scan is so we have got enough time to agree on a name.

sarahsyrup · 08/09/2009 22:13

Hello Everyone, I'm due Feb 17th, DS 16 months. I'm feeling fat, but I guess that'll get worse before it gets better.

Hope you're all doing okay, my sickness is just going off, but nicely the sciatica is kicking in, trade one ailment for another, and so it goes.

:-) xx

westlondongirl · 09/09/2009 09:28

Posted this on a separate thread but wondered if you are all experiencing the same: - I have had really bad nasal congestion, runny nose & sneezing for 2 weeks now. It tends to be worst in the night & is stopping me sleeping. I initially thought it was a cold but don't now. I went to a pharmacist & she said I couldn't take anything apart from lockets. I am so tired from it. Does anyone have any tips? Steam makes it worse, in fact it makes me sneeze uncontrollably.

It's driving me (and my partner) crazy!

chinook · 09/09/2009 09:56

westlondongirl-I have spoken to my gp and midwife about this. It is very common in preg and is caused by increased blood flow to the sinuses irritating them. I have had it since I was 8 weeks and actually envy your runny nose because my 'mucous' is further back in my sinuses and just runs down my throat so I have to swallow it. It is delightful. I have a humidifier by my bed which is supposed to soothe your sinuses and those 'breathe easy snoring strips' you stick to your nose helped my friend. Also if you search this thread a couple of weeks ago for watercress' posts she told us some decongestants which are safe to use when pregnant. She is a pharmacist. Sorry to ramble on, but it is a subject close to my heart and it didn't go away with dd until I had delivered her. Hope that helps a bit.

Clappedout · 09/09/2009 12:31

Hi all,

Is anyone getting night time cramps and random sphincter contractions?!(to put it delicately) I've been getting them for the last two nights, no pain or bleeding though, wondering whether I need to get a scan....don't remember any of this from last time.

Insanitybecomesme · 09/09/2009 13:40

Hi everyone

Lots seems to have been posted since I was last here will have a read later.

Clappedout I seem to get most of my stretching pains at night which is not fair as I need my sleep.

Just had my 16 week appointment with the midwife, she was able to find one heartbeat but not a second one, she had already said before that she did not expect to get two heartbeats at 16 weeks and that the scans are far more reliable with twins than dopplers.

At least all seems well so now just need to plod on till the 6th October where I get to meet my consultant and with luck find out the gender of these two lumps.

AngelaCarleen · 09/09/2009 21:56

Had my 'fit for pregnancy' class yesterday (run by physio at hospital, not as scary and active as it sounds ). I am now obsessed with pelvic floor exercises, I have been doing them all day, but I think that I'm screwing my face up when I do it, so everyone knows . Oh well, they'll have to get over it, I do not want to end up incontinent because I was slack with my exercises!

Westlondongirl I replied to your other thread .

westlondongirl · 10/09/2009 09:02

Thanks for the congestion replies. Have been to two more pharmacies and they won't give me anything. Nose is bleeding a bit today & it's still preventing sleep. May go and bother my doctor next week. AngelaCarleen were you at the QCCH class yesterday? I was there too if you were, it was very interesting. Ended up doing pelvic floors at the cinema last night!

flyingcloud · 10/09/2009 09:41

Threeplusone - was it you interested in the Loola Up?

I started this thread in the Pushchair section

It's really interesting - I think they are all on clearance now due to rebranding so we might need to get our skates on!

threeplusone · 10/09/2009 10:41

Flyingcloud.. Yes I am interested in the Loola but the normal one not the LoolaUp.
WIll have a look at your thread though.

Fell done the cellar stairs last night and hurt my back just strainrd all the shoulder muscles and when I look down can feel it all the way down the spine. Went to see the MW this morn and luckily she could fit me in as I hadnt felt baby move since and I get movements everynight now.. Straight away the baby kicked the doppler, then we heard the heart beat, which put my mind at rest. Managed to get some more packing done this morning.. but hubby just come home and told me that one of my friends has swine flu.. hoping she hasnt passed it on to him as we were out with her at the weekend, and he has been with her today!!. Got a busy few days as need to get the house ready to hand back to the army on wednesday, the garden is the main area must borrow soeones jetwash to do the patio.

Hope everyone is ook take care x

westlondongirl · 10/09/2009 14:03

Threeplusone - what a drama! Very relieved to hear you are ok! Hope the rest of the move goes well.

Pops78 · 10/09/2009 14:31

Hi All,

So sorry I have not been on here for over a week, especially as you were all so lovely about the issues I was having with my friend. No contact with her since and for now I am perfectly happy with that, I've moved on and have brill friends who are thrilled I am pg, don't need her selfish drama.

Gosh there is so much to catch up on. Welcome to newbies. So sorry to hear about people suffering from this awful sounding congestion. Threeplusone so pleased all is ok with baby, how awful to fall down the stairs when pg, u must have been so paniced. Go easy pls. So pleased you have the assurance of all this movement, kicks etc, but also a little envious. We are due same day and I have nothing like that. I do feel there is movement but it's always after I have eaten so hard not to think its my digestion not baby. Maybe its cos its my first but hard not to be paro. With MS and tiredness gone plus bump deflated slightly (though does tend to puff up by evening) sometimes (all the time) I just worry all is well. I am driving myself mad....

scoobyd00 · 10/09/2009 17:27

Pops - don't worry I'm as just as paranoid! I don't even feel pg, I just feel a little fat!

Thanks for all the advice on fitness. I'm going to continue with what I'm doing, until my body tells me otherwise. I went for a run this morning and felt absolutely fine.

3plus1 - I knew they'd be another military related person on the thread somewhere! We're due to move before Christmas but DHE are being their normal unhelpful selves! I hope your march out goes ok.

Scooby

Clappedout · 10/09/2009 18:18

Pops-I didn't feel anything with my last pregnancy until after 20 weeks and remember being really worried too, and your bump is usually bigger, or feels it, by the end of the day, gravity I guess. Quite common to feel movement after eating too, I get it in the evenings but not regular yet.

bethylou · 10/09/2009 21:13

Hi,
I'm sure this is the thread I joined about three weeks ago but my name does not seem to appear which is a bit weird! Anyway, can I rejoin?! I'm due on February 17th, seeing consultant tomorrow (due to complications with me afterwards last time) and hope to hear the heartbeat for the first time. Think I'm starting to feel the baby move which is very reassuring.

My DS (17 months) was going to sleep at lunchtime today so I thought I would do the same (as still totally warn out, though less so than a couple of weeks ago admittedly). He started crying so I went in to calm him down, having already undressed myself. He stood up in the cot, poked my nipple and said, "Beep beep!" and laughed!! Clearly pregnant breasts are very amusing!

bethylou · 10/09/2009 21:21

Have now read the messages on this page too - Sounds like we have a lot in common Sarahsyrup - I'm getting the sciatic pains too to replace the nausea which I really struggled with last time round.

As for pelvic floor exercises AngelaCarleen, don't do more than they suggest as mine ended up 'too tight' last time and caused problems with the birth! The post-natal physio saw me 6 weeks later and said I had better PF muscles than most women who had never had a baby! This time I'm just doing them from time to time.

AngelaCarleen · 10/09/2009 21:59

Thanx Bethylou, I can't seem to stop myself, the woman scared us all half to death, what with that and tearing our tummy muscles . I don't dare even try to sit up in bed without rolling onto my side first in case my tummy just unzips and the baby falls out, lol! I'm now trying to figure out how to do pelvic tilts in public

Scooby and 3+1- there must be more than just 3 of us one here . Luckily we're not moving any time soon, especially as DH is away (and has been since before we knew I was pregnant ). Good luck with your move 3+1.

AngelaCarleen · 10/09/2009 22:04

Just thought I should clarify, the physio said that we should be doing pelvic tilts throughout the day to relieve back pain. I'm not some nutcase wondering around thrusting my pevlis at randoms . But I'm not sure it's appropriate on a children's ward full of flirty docs .

Westlondongirl, I wasn't at the QCCH class, just a free one at the hospital .

threeplusone · 11/09/2009 21:13

Scooby, Angela where are you .. we are in Germany.. March out should go smoothly as we have the cleaners booked.. marched in today and I am very happy with new house, was also told I can order some more curtains which is good as there are loads of windows in the house and would cost me a fortune..
