craftynclothy · 15/07/2009 13:16

Had midwife this morning. Baby partially engaged and everything else fine.

fruitymum · 15/07/2009 13:55

Congratulations Oonagh and hubby - Oliver looks beautiful - well done!

MrsThePoint · 15/07/2009 14:09

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Oonagh. Oliver is beautiful, and what a lovely name too. Am so impressed will Mr Oonagh telling us and putting up piccys for us nosey biddies!!!

Hawkmoth plastic-backed dust sheets very expensive ? Tesco or Asda do shower curtains for about £1 each! That?s what we have on the ready for our homebirth!

HellHathNoFury · 15/07/2009 15:46

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Oonagh!!

Hello again everyone, I am making one of my scarce appearances

I am now fucking massive and have had to hire a cleaner as SPD and cleaning and fucking-massiveness don't mix.

Just did my tax return and owe £1500. GRRRRRR

monkeyfeathers · 15/07/2009 15:49

Oh congratulations Oonagh and family!

I haven't posted on these threads in ages. I just came back from an appointment with the midwife and the wee bugger is breech (which I knew anyway - not least because it's really uncomfortable). I'm 36+1 now, so we had the fun of trying to book an appointment with a consultant to discuss options etc. They really don't seem to have enough staff to cover demand. They've managed to squeeze us into an overbooked clinic next Tuesday, so I can imagine that'll involve a long wait. Oh what fun...

YanknCock · 15/07/2009 15:59

Yay! Congratulations Mr & Mrs Oonagh! So cute!

Saw new midwife this morning, and she had correct size BP cuff , however, my BP is now not doing so well.... 120/90 and 130/90 and apparently they are more concerned with the bottom number. It was 110/70 a few weeks ago. Now I am soooo swollen in the feet/ankles (cankles now). They don't even go down much at night. All started the week with the heat and has continued on. Have to see them weekly to be monitored and watch out for headaches/blurred vision.

Starting to have the feeling it's all going to go horribly wrong...I just want to have a 'normal' birth after having such a rotten pregnancy!

Lining paper is finally up, ceiling is painted, and the painting will commence Thursday night or I will kill DH, step over him, and paint the room myself! I think the 'nesting' is starting, just want everything done and in order, and can't relax. Baby is very busy too, doing aerobics most of the day.

quixotic · 15/07/2009 16:56

Very exciting, lets hope Oliver's arrival is the kick off and we get lots more now!

Sitting at my desk all day is killing my back - trying to get up and walk around a lot but by 2pm I generally just want to go home. Midwife said I need to get on all fours a lot to get the baby into right position, back to my back at the moment. That is not something for the office though. Hopefully yoga tonight will help.

Nasty on the SPD & tax Hell, and good luck turning that baby Monkey!

Hawkmoth · 15/07/2009 17:52

Paid a fiver for a huge paper/plastic sheet, which will be supplemented by a stash of shower curtains that my mum has been buying me over the years! It's waterproof and 12 x 9 foot. Also bought a load of plastic drawers for my nesting-by-proxy instincts and the poor kids are going to have to keep their toys organised or face my wrath.

Yank - my MW didn't even ask about swelling today! My BP went up like that last time and everyone started flapping, but everything was fine. It's just one more reason to take it very easy and sip cool drinks all day.

Monkeyfeathers - turned mine about a month ago doing handstands in the swimming pool - must have been highly amusing for the other swimmers .

Hell - I wish we could have a cleaner. My mum keeps coming over and cleaning the kitchen and tutting.

HellHathNoFury · 15/07/2009 18:48

Well I have a MW horror story for you

2 in fact

my old one (from last time) had really long nails and burst my water when she did a sweep, thus causing me to leak amniotic fluid for a week and go into a nasty long slow labour. Hence I do not now 'do' sweeps, they can keep their fingers out of my fanjo.

This MW (current one) is the size of a house, I saw her coming out of the loo without washing her hands, she sweats and pants all over me and has never even bothered to weigh me. The last 2 times I have been she hasn't checked urine, and all she does is keep saying 'yeah your SPD is only going to get worse'.

Well it IS when you keep digging your fat fucking fist into my pubic bone when you measure me, bitch

HeinzSight · 15/07/2009 20:03

Massive congratulations Mr and Mrs Oonagh and welcome to the world Oliver , you're gorgeous!!!

HeinzSight · 15/07/2009 20:07

Sorry to all those with midwife horror stories, horrid!

kitkatqueen · 15/07/2009 22:30

Hi everyone! The contractions are still slowing down I am now placing bets on bubs turning up 10 days overdue

Heinz, hows yr MIL getting on with the sling? I just packed mine into my case and thought of you

Crafty/ anyone, any advice?... Having bought 20 75cmx75cm organic cotton flat nappies yesterday supercheap ( i hope ) I need to finish cutting them down to 60cmx60cm..

I managed to bust the main drive belt on my sewing machine at 1am this morning and am now all itchy fingered to get on with my nappies and can't find anyone selling one in the uk The only one listed on ebay says 18 1/2 inches and mine measures 13 1/2 - possible typo? Its a singer genie 354 BTW. Have messaged seller but not had a reply.

I was using all the offcuts to make up bootsers for the extra 5 motherease that I picked up and to make washables for me for after the baby arrives.

I'm now surrounded by acres of supersoft terry towelling, loads of fleece and only a hand operated 1922 back up sewing machine

As for midwives mine have all been loveley this time, the doctor that I keep on seeing is a to$$er tho! After I had been on monitor for over 3 hrs showing long strong contractions he walked in and said, "so you think you've been having some little tightenings then do you"? in the most patronising voice ever. grr.

kitkatqueen · 15/07/2009 22:37

Oh mrsthepoint, sorry nearly forgot Loved the links, have been having trouble convincing dp on the comfyness of washables, in spite of the fact that I always wear washables and ds seems happy in his so I showed him your links and he's now converted whether they are comfyer or not ( btw I know i've probably just stuck two created words in there but you know what I mean )

Its interesting too on the asthma front as I know several children with asthma who were in disposables and improved drastically once they were potty trained - all anecdotal evidence of course but worth thinking about

trixymalixy · 15/07/2009 23:21

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Oonagh, he's gorgeous and love the name, might need to add Oliver to our shortlist.

Anybody else got horrific heartburn? Absolutely everything I eat or drink gives me heartburn, even a glass of water or milk. I tried to go for a nap this afternoon as I didn't sleep that well last night, but couldn't sleep because of it despite being propped up on loads of pillows and glugging Gaviscon.

We did a trial run with the birthing pool last night, so spent the evening watching telly in it so the hot water wasn't wasted .

hawkmoth did you get your plastic sheet in B&Q? as I need to go and buy one as well as some clean buckets.

hellhathnofury at the MW!!

becksydee · 16/07/2009 11:10

gah, i've got all behind with this thread now & can't remember all the replies i wanted to make! ok, here goes ...

firstly, huge congratulations to mr & mrs oonagh - oliver is absolutely gorgeous

secondly, scummymummy gets virtual cake for complimenting the scan pic on my profile

DP had an interview for the NCT job yesterday & thought it went quite well, although doughnut that he is he forgot to take his portfolio in with him haven't heard the outcome yet, so still keeping my fingers crossed.

cloth nappies - i've finally got my head round these & am ordering some bumbles + baby beehinds wraps (found a shop on eBay that sells the wraps for £2.99 each if anyone wants a link). sounds like the bumbles will be a bit bulky at first, but my mum's bought about a gazillion size 1 disposables which should hopefully tide us over if it turns out to be a problem.

kitkatqueen - any luck with finding a replacement drive belt for your sewing machine? if not there's a specialist sewing machine shop just up the road from me, happy to pop in & see if they have any in stock if that would be helpful?

got my GTT results back this morning - 8.8 (top of normal range is 7.8 apparently) got an appointment with the diabetes midwife tomorrow morning to show me how to do blood glucose monitoring. not sure what this means for my plans to use the birthing centre, guess i will find out in the next couple of weeks.

readyfornumber2and3 · 16/07/2009 13:43

Hi all x

Congratulations Oonagh on the safe arrival of Oliver

I am very impressed with how many of you are planning on using washable nappies, we were plannin on it originally but since finding out it was twins I have been put off the idea.

I am 34 weeks today and just been for another scan, Both babies are doing well and are estimated at 5lb 9oz and 5lb 3oz
I have to go back in 2 weeks for an internal exam to see if I am favourable and if I am they will try and start me off if I dont go naturally by 37 weeks (keeping my fingers crossed that I dont have too much longer to go as I am really fed up now and dont know how much more I can take!!)

HellHathNoFury · 16/07/2009 14:00

I used washables for DS1 but sold them all, didn't get on with them and it wasn't for lack of trying.

Perhaps I was doing something wrong.

Oh well, am happily entrenched in the land of disposables now.

OonaghBhuna · 16/07/2009 14:48

Hello its me! We got home from hospital today, thank you so much for all your lovely messages.Oliver is a little darling and I cant stop cuddling him.He is lovely

I will write more later about the birth/hospital and of course my little prince

becksydee · 16/07/2009 15:09

ScummyMummy · 16/07/2009 15:29

Wonderful news, becksy. Congratulations to dh.

Welcome back, Ooonagh and Oliver! Looking forward to hearing how it all went from the horse's mouth.

craftynclothy · 16/07/2009 15:34

KKQ - Have you got any independent sewing shops near you that might be able to help? They may be able to tell you of another make that will fit it.

Oonagh - glad to hear you're home.

Becksy - yay for dh getting the job

Am a bit . Got a letter the other week saying I had a HV pre-birth visit today 2.30-3.30. Now I thought this was to give me the red book etc but also because I've been referred by the pregnancy support midwife and I was expecting (from the way the letter was written) an hour long appointment. Anyway she turned up at 2.45, was out by 3. She gave me the red book, a bunch of useless leaflets. They had a breastfeeding dvd but no leaflet, a bottle feeding leaflet , no cot death leaflet so they'd typed some bullet points on a bit of card. All she said about baby groups was that she'd tell me about them after I've had the baby (helpful, when she knows that getting out & about helps me not get depressed ). Then when she left she said they might be a bit late visiting me after the birth cos she's away for 2 weeks and they know I've got an IM so at least someone will be seeing me .

BabyBump2B · 16/07/2009 16:41

Oonagh - welcome home - can't wait to hear all about your gorgeous boy!

Becksy - Hooray for your DH! What a relief!

Things are all good here - think I may have had my first braxton hicks yesterday but not entirely sure. I'm getting mixed messages from 'they don't hurt' to 'they hurt just not as much as contractions'!!!

Can't believe I'm 37 weeks on Sunday - where has the time gone?

MrsThePoint · 16/07/2009 17:31

readyfornumber2and3 don?t discount the idea of cloth nappies totally. A friend of mine has twins and uses disposable when she?s out and cloth at home. The money she saves on just doing part-time cloth nappies, she says, is amazing. Using cloth or disposables is not an all-or-nothing choice, you can combine both. Don?t give up on the idea totally, as you can get some really good priced nappies, both new and second-hand. Even if it?s just the cost that sways you and baby?s health and bin contents (my God your bin will be over-flowing with two in full-time disposables) doesn?t bother you! Just my two-pence worth, sorry for being so opinionated, it?s just I love my cloth !

HellHathNoFury what brand(s) of cloth nappies did you try, and why didn?t they work for you? Was it getting the washing routine sorted, if so disposables are probably the best choice for you, but if it was their bulk, fit, leaking or anything else then it is probably the brand you chose. Different nappies suit different babies, which is why spending loads before baby arrives, especially buying the full stash, is never something I recommended to my customers! Try-before-you-buy through hire kits or buying several different types second-hand to see what fits your baby is what I suggest (although it doesn?t get me many sales)!

becksydee so glad your DP got the job!

craftynclothy not impressed with your HV pre-birth visit, especially the attitude over IM which you are paying for. Had very similar comments from our HV too (we have IM too). Humph!

MrsThePoint · 16/07/2009 17:36

BabyBump2B if it helps my MW told me that braxton hicks are not painful, but you CAN also get the real-deal contractions before labour (weeks before sometimes) which are painful and people confuse the two .

I would imagine, although am not sure as I was induced last time, when the time has come irrespective of the name of the pain you are experiencing!

MrsThePoint · 16/07/2009 17:37

I meant to say 'I would imagine you know, although am not sure as I was induced last time, when the time has come irrespective of the name of the pain you are experiencing!
