Oooh ? I can talk nappies ...

kitkatqueen we used washables (Motherease one size) with DS from about 6 weeks (wanted to straight away but was a bit much after EMCS) and though they were a bit bulky and gave him a big bottom, they were fine. We used Motherease wraps, and you only really need 4 or so wraps because you only change them when they are soiled, not at every nappy change. I also left the slightly damp ones to dry and used them a second time before washing them too. Got a bit carried away and tried loads of others, inclu. Tots Bots, Ella?s House, Little Lambs, Fuzzi Bunz, Bumgenius but still loved my Motherease nappies. So reliable, leaked far less than the disposables, but we did have to put him in the next size up trousers or shorts because of the big bottom syndrome! See if there is a local nappy agent near you who can give you a hire kit. I have a hire kit which I lend out so people can get a try of the different types before spending out on ones that might not suit! Whoa ? long message, sorry!

Have several newborn nappies now, including Motherease Sandys and Kissaluvs with their cute popper down bit for the umbilical cord!

Hawkmoth and BabyBump2B hope you both get on ok with your Bumgenius, buying a complete set of nappies can go wrong if you don?t get on with them, but the Bumgenius do have a good second-hand sale value! I always preferred the two piece system, as I found one piece leaked more, but perhaps that?s just my boy?!?

ScummyMummy I am def. a badly organised mum who has found using washable nappies easy! It is simply a case of also having disposables for when you do run out. Using cloth is not an all-or-nothing situation and if you only use them half the time, you still save money!! It?s trying to get into a washing routine, and you can wash them with your normal washing if you do a pre-wash first, especially helpful if you go for the colourful ones!

MrsThePoint · 13/07/2009 13:37

And good luck all the impending arrivals and those with BH contractions and the real deal too! It?s all getting a bit close now, eh?

craftynclothy · 13/07/2009 13:40

Dh works full-time and I work from home but am not a fan of cleaning! We've used washables successfully on dd BUT I did have a bit of an obsession and have far far too many. Think at one point I could have gone about 2-3 weeks without needing to reuse a nappy . My tip is to have some terry squares handy in case you run out & a decent sized lidded bucket (ours was a bit small tbh - from Mothercare).

ScummyMummy · 13/07/2009 14:38

That's heartening, crafty and Mrsthepoint. What are soakers, btw? I am very impressed that you're knitting them, whatever they are!

nellyup · 13/07/2009 14:43

Ooh, nice timing with the nappy conversation - thank you. I'm finally stopping work properly tomorrow so am getting around to the nice preparations for baby's arrival and have been thinking about which nappies to buy. Official date (adjusted at scan) is a week on Friday which is now astonishingly close. But I'm not really expecting him until the week after.

Oonagh best wishes for tomorrow, will be thinking of you and looking forward to news and KKQ hope things are OK for you.

OonaghBhuna · 13/07/2009 14:56

Thanks for all of the messages. I think I am organised for tomorrow! The babies head is now wedged in my right hand side and feels completely stuck so I am now feeling relieved that we have made it to this point.

I like the nappy discussion I havent decided on what I am going to do, I think I will just see what the mayhem is like with a 4 year old, a 2.6yr old and a newborn

kitKat how are you??????

I will be in touch soon, I hope! I will get DH to update you all asap!!!!!!!

duchesse · 13/07/2009 15:43

Good luck for tomorrow Oonagh. You lead the way. And having 3 under 5s was busy but fun. Have to say I am looking forward to having an only though, at my age...

craftynclothy · 13/07/2009 15:45

SM - soakers are a wool nappy cover. Like this www.bdazzlers.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5&zenid=sfn2g7irnb6126v7grkj0j0j65 so a bit more around the legs than a wrap but not as much as shorts iyswim.

craftynclothy · 13/07/2009 15:48

Oh and sorry . Good luck for tomorrow Oonagh

VJaybigpants · 13/07/2009 17:32

Good luck for tomorrow Oonagh

Hawkmoth · 13/07/2009 19:21

I don't care how the nappies are - they ARE going to work! DP wanted washables so we've got them, and it WILL be fine!!!

HeinzSight · 13/07/2009 19:37

Yes good luck Oonagh xx

kitkatqueen · 13/07/2009 23:06

I think...think its starting to slow down..... everything crossed - touching wood etc etc etc. Have had a total of 45mins without contractions since Friday and then landed back in hospital with a temperature and v strong contractions. They think that I have a low level uti which is causing some sort of irritation to my womb and causing the contractions.

So I'm now dosed up with loads of antibiotics, paracetamol and trying not to move too much.

I'm going to see the "nappy lady" tomorrow to scoop up and split between me and a friend the last of her 33p each motherease nappies

At the moment I have
15 motherease nappies with boosters
4 ML wraps
4 large wraps

I'm thinking about getting some flat nappies so that I can make them fit whatever size I need, small wraps of the same sort i've already got and i'm totally undecided on whether to get some all-in-ones. My other three all seemed to get through 10-12 nappies a day in the begining, so i'm thinking that flat nappies would be a cheap way of boosting my numbers for the 1st few weeks. Must remember to get an extra bucket!!

advice needed crafty and anyone else.

I like the 2 part system for drying speed and I don't really seem to get any leaks although atm i'm using a disposable at night because he straight away started to tell me when he had wee'd if he was wearing a washable and at night would wake me up every hour to tell me he'd done another one.

I have to admit I felt a bit guilty putting him in washables because I assumed they would be less comfortable than disposables but he seems to prefer cloth to the point of getting the nappies out by himself and cuddling them when he's wearing a disposable - so cute

Oonagh All best wishes and thoughts for tomorrow. If you have a girl you'll have to call her kitkat I feel so old!. Thinking of you!

BabyBump2B · 14/07/2009 06:00

Oonagh - Just wanted to jump in and say GOOD LUCK! Can't wait to hear all about your new arrival! xoxo

craftynclothy · 14/07/2009 08:48

Oonagh - good luck for today.

KKQ - glad things are (fingers crossed) slowing down. Nappies wise I think terry squares are great on newborns - we used them for about 8 weeks on dd before I started buying other nappies. If you're looking for an All-in-one then the Itti Bitti D'Lish is fab. It's very slim fitting. The absorbent boosters actually attach with snaps so it all comes apart for washing/drying so dries quickly & you can buy extra inserts and re-use the outer. They come in gorgeous colours too (am perhaps a bit biased though cos I sell them and have 2 for the baby! ) I also like the Berry Plush that Bumfluff does - again they have a snap in absorbent booster. I don't know how well they work on little ones though cos we didn't try them until dd was in a Medium.

ScummyMummy · 14/07/2009 09:04

Oo-nagh Oo-nagh Oo-nagh

Hope everything goes well.

mamamila · 14/07/2009 09:10

phew i found you!

i know i'm too late but good luck oonagh! this is it eh? a steady stream of birth announcements to follow..

i'm soooo sick of being pregnant too, 4 weeks tomorrow till c-section and i'm rarely leaving the house, we don't have a car and everywhere seems to far to walk. i'm still seeing the osteo weekly but should probably give it up and spend the money on more needed things

does everyone have pushchairs? they're still driving me crazy, decided to get 2 on ebay rather than 1 new and so spend every day following them obsessively and never winning!

i suddenly remembered swaddle wraps yesterday..if it's not too hot. dd loved being swaddled

mamamila · 14/07/2009 09:13

and sympathy for you kitkat!

i suddenly realised yesterday i was having BH, blamed dh's bbq first then realised duh! felt like contractions but only occasionally. good luck!

ScummyMummy · 14/07/2009 09:24

I did exactly that with the pushchairs too, mamamila. Then almost by accident I finally won a massive silver cross linear freeway that I'd put a tentative bid on! Seems vastly unsuitable for the lifestyle of a public transport user (with vastly being the operative word!) in many ways but it was cheap and is in v good condition. It has a reversible seat and lies flat so I think it will get us through the 1st 6 months to a year no probs and if/when I start noticing that it weighs a ton I'll buy a cheap umbrella fold. Haven't thought much about pushchairs since, which is a vast relief as I was seriously obsessing!

quixotic · 14/07/2009 09:29

Good Luck for today Oonagh!

Fingers crossed things slow down for you KKQ.

We got a "Nappies for London" voucher and are planning to spend it on the nappy service to see how that works. They deliver the nappies and wraps (not sure what kind) at the beginning of the week and take away the old ones to clean - think it is about £9 per week and the voucher is for £50 so it should keep us going for a while. Not sure if it will get a bit smelly to have them hanging around that long but they have inserts and provide a nappy bucket. We will see.

I realised again that I should have seen the doctor recently - I am not sure if it is me or the surgery - but my last appointment was at 21 weeks, and though I have seen the midwife once since then no-one has mentioned the doctor. My schedule says I should have had two other visits with the doctor since then - doh! Seeing the midwife this afternoon so am going to book in ALL the rest of the appointments to stop myself getting confused.

I had a day off yesterday and it was lovely - did Pilates, had lunch, saw my brother and baked cupcakes. I could get used to being off - 6 working days to go!

BB2B did you manage to see your GP and sort your maternity leave?

mamamila · 14/07/2009 09:56

scummymummy - the silver cross is perfect i have couple of friends using them, including 1 prefers still for her 2 yr old. i'm still in dilemma over single or double mountain buggy so baby can lie in pram for first few months and a phil teds

i officially hate my midwife, she's been quite crap all through but first thing she said to me last week was 'haha so only 4 weeks till you meet the butcher!'

duchesse · 14/07/2009 10:25

I have to say I think it's fab that so many people on here are planning to use washables! Back in the dark days of the 90s, I and the few people I knew who did felt quite alone on Planet Terry...

duchesse · 14/07/2009 10:27

kitkat- thank goodness! Better for the baby to stay in a bit longer, no?
