vocabulary question: how do you call this? I had bought a couple of similar ones when 7 weeks pregnant (as a sign that I really believe in a positive progress of my pregnancy) but with buttons only in between the legs. My sister had then told me that they are not very comfortable to put on as you have to squeeze the babies head through the however you call that hole for the head (don't know, why you never learn this kind of basic vocabulary in a foreign language). Anyway, I haven't been seriously looking for that style with the buttons from top to bottom here in England but so far I did not come across it. Does it not exist or am I just blind?

HomeintheSun · 06/06/2009 20:58

Hi everyone I hope all is well. My DH leaves tomorrow for a course in the uk, my 20 week scan is on the 15th, DS and my friend is coming to the scan with me. I've been buying loads of stuff off ebay, maternity clothes, baby clothes, baby monitors, sling, cot bumper and a pop up cot. Baby has been moving a bit but still haven't felt it on the outside yet.

Laugs · 06/06/2009 21:02

ursigurke that's called a baby-gro or vest (short-sleeved) / sleepsuit (long sleeved)
I don't think that one you linked to would have to go over the baby's head as it buttons up from the side, so no comfort issues! An easy style for getting over the head is this, which is called an 'envelope neck' and has no fastenings. The opening is quite wide, so doesn't squeeze the head.
I'm not sure you mean the style that buttons top to bottom - do you mean like the one you linked?

ursigurke · 06/06/2009 21:27

Thanks laugs - the one I've linked is the style with buttons top to bottom I was talking about. My sister recommended it to me, as you open it, put the baby on it and then you close it. It seems quite logic to me and even easier for the first months than the one you have linked. (But the ones I had bought are soooo cute) I'll have to write down those expressions, will be easier to remember. I've learned so many fancy words in all my language classes but obviously nothing about pregnancy, birth or babies...

scarlotti · 06/06/2009 22:41

usigurke it's a baby vest that you've linked to. Beware as babygros/sleepsuits are normally classed as long leg suits that have poppers all down the front and are put on like a coat, then pop baby's legs into the leg bits.

H&M are the only place I've seen in the UK that do baby vests that don't have to be put on over the head. For first time mums (who don't yet have the confidence to pull baby limbs through clothes ) they are a great idea. You open up the whole vest, lay baby on top, then popper/tie up the vest around them.

The envelope necked vests we have over here though are really easy to put on as the neck opens far wider than your baby's head.
Top tip for putting on anything with sleeves too, is to roll up the sleeve on your thumbs/fingers, put your hand through the arm hole the wrong way, hold baby's hand then feed the sleeve back over your hand and baby's hand - not sure I've explained that properly but it's a bit like rolling tights/stockings up to pop them on your toes then roll them out along your leg.

Maybe it's just too late for me to be making any sense!!!

southernbelle77 · 07/06/2009 06:53

Just trying to catch up again. Nothing to report, but didn't want to be awol for too long!

katster37 · 07/06/2009 07:30

Babygros are lovely - I can't wait to start buying things!
Am awake after rubbish night of coughing... Am seriously worrying all this hacking cannot be good for baby, my stomach muscles squeeze every time I cough... Yuck. Has anyone else had a bad cough in pregnancy? Am really in two minds over whether to take the antibiotics (erythmyricin) as Dr said it probaby was viral... If I wasn't allergic to penicililin I would have them but these seem a bit more risky.

Usigurke you have got me thinking about all the obscure baby/pregnancy vocab you would need in a foreign language! My degree was in French and German and I don't think I could manage in either of those countries!

helips · 07/06/2009 07:59

Morning all!

katster sorry to hear that you are still feeling poorly, I am sure the coughing won't effect the baby though as it is cushioned well by all the amniotic fluid. Did your doctor say it was safe to take the antibiotics in pregnancy?

It is raining and miserable here this morning. Am going to Bluewater today (a big enclosed shopping center in Kent) to try and get something to wear for this wedding in a few weeks. Am finding it really hard to find anything I like as I just feel so big and self concious (sp?) I have a proper baby bump and am slim everywhere else but feel like I shouldn't be this big yet and when people ask when I am due they always look a bit shocked! Oh well, spose it's a sign of a healthy growing baby, just wish I could enjoy it more and stop being so vain!

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend...

katster37 · 07/06/2009 08:23

Helips hope you find something nice for the wedding. I think bumps look bigger on slim people because they are slim everywhere else (atleast that is what I am telling myself as I am also feeling paranoid, esp after my boss asked if it was twins!). Yes, Dr said the antibiotics are ok in pregnancy but when I googled it (silly me) it seemed less clear cut... Having said that, I can't go on feeling like this and my mum has scared me by telling me it could turn into pneumonia if I'm not careful

FIL still here.... Snoring all night and up at 7... Made DH get up to entertain him.

Did anyone else have a massive thunderstorm about 6am this morning?

ursigurke · 07/06/2009 08:37

Morning all!
scarlotti - thanks for explaining, I completely understand. As you said confidence for first timers: I remember that I was once supposed to squeeze a little boys hand in a glove and could not do it! Interestingly, I was never scared to dress my nephew or niece. I think shoes are the worst btw. So I will buy a few vests for (probably big) newborns at H&M and the envelope necked ones for later.
Katster - I cough and sneeze regularly and I'm sure the baby is fine and protected as helips says. I guess, once it is born, it will need that sound to be able to sleep
I also have a degree in French and even lived there for over a year. But I NEVER learnt a single pregnancy related word.
helips - Good luck with the dress shopping. I'm sure you will find something. This years fashion offers a lot for pregnant women. And btw, I wish my bump was already a bit bigger (I suppose typical first time feeling)

BeckyBendyLegs · 07/06/2009 08:42

Katster I was taking erythmyricin when I first found out I was pregnant and rang my doctors in a panic and he said 'don't worry, they are safe to take in pregnancy' but I'm sure your doctor would let you know if he / she thought there were any risks. They can make you a bit dodgy in the stomach area though as a side effect: a bit like having a mild stomach bug - I was just really gurgly for a couple of days.

Your mum makes a good point. If it turns into pneumonia you'll have to take stronger antibiotics.

No thunderstorms in Shropshire that I know of. DH has abandoned me today by going into the office. Bah. So I'm about to do the cleaning while keeping an eye on the DSs and two cats at the same time.

ursigurke · 07/06/2009 08:48

Katster - forgot to say, I've just read an article about a study run by British doctors with patients with a cold (and cough): There was one group who got antibiotics, one didn't get anything and the third was allowed to come back if it didn't get better after two weeks. In the end, it seemed that all three groups needed the same time to get completely over it. The writer of the article also mentiones that in 9 out of 10 cases it is viral so antibiotics don't help at all.
I agree with your mum that you have to be careful, but I would continue a while without antibiotics. You have it already since a few days, isn't it? Did you get something that makes the coughing easier? And I forgot, did you go to work or will you go to work next week? Maybe a couple of days in bed and lots of herbal tea would make things better.

ursigurke · 07/06/2009 08:50

oh, and as you have a degree in German you might try to read it yourself here

katster37 · 07/06/2009 08:58

Thanks for that, usigurke, think I have understood it, although I am v out of practice! I think I will give it to next week, which will be 2 weeks, before taking anything. Like the bit where it says something like 'a cold last 14 days if untreated (with antibiotics), 2 weeks if you go to the Dr's'!

raggie · 07/06/2009 09:06

Morning all! Yes, katster we had the thunderstorm her in N London too - it interspersed with my weird dream about beebee - she was BF like a dream but we'd forgotten to buy something to carry her in on a walk so I kept nearly dropping her as she was so heavy.

WHAT does that all mean? It's a girl? I want to buy stuff for her? I am spending too much time thinking about beebee and on Mumsnet instead of doing reports?!

Well, actually I have bashed out a whole report this morning before 9am so feeling very proud. Now going to SKype DH in tanzania and some brekkie...mmmmm!

BeckyBendyLegs · 07/06/2009 10:00

I'm cleaning the house I hate cleaning.

I bet that article is interesting, I'll have to ask my friend with a degree in French and German to help, as I only have GCSE German from which I can remember sentences such as:
Wenn Komme ich am bestern zum Bahnhoff? Du gehst links und geraderhaus.
Ich habe einen Hund, sein Name bin Lumpi.
Hilfe hilfe, weil ich nicht schwimmen kann! Excuse spelling.

I think ursigurke's suggestion of a couple of days in bed is a good idea if you can manage it (not easy I know for teachers): give your body the chance to rest and try to recover itself.

pinkfizzle · 07/06/2009 10:02

Raggie - I'm afraid I am no dream analyst but my pgcy dreams are a real hoot, often my dh and I are really forgetful inexperienced parents and the baby in the dream is the smartest most sensible member of the family.

Thanks BeckyBendyLegs glad to read of the baby magnet effect. I think I will make use of the local baby groups. Thanks for the tips.

Usiigurke I will try muster the courage for the baby on board badge and report back.

We had heavy rain this morning too, but don't mind it as I have to do a full days work today - mainly because on Friday I kind of had a weird day dreaming day where I achieved nothing and need to prepare for a meeting tom.
I've set myself a target of getting it all done in time for the apprentice. Lorraine grew on me, I would have liked to see her in the final for the fun factor.

pinkfizzle · 07/06/2009 10:05

Was going to add that for Katser that coughing can't harm the baby as the amniotic sac is a shock absorber. hope you rest up and get well soon.

and as to the posting of these cute baby outfits - I can feel a mini-spending spree coming on...

beepbeep · 07/06/2009 10:06

Morning all, got a lay in this morning as DH not a work!

usigurke - those vests that do up all the way (like you linked to) I found quite good a first with my first baby as i was a little cautious of handling her and putting things over her head, though the envelope style that most places sell are fine. Petite Bateux (sp?) sell the buttoned ones as well. Only ha a couple and once i had sorted myself out I had no problem with the normal envelope ones, just used envelope ones with DS. If that makes sense?!

Have a shocker of a headache, have had them constantly for about 2/3 weeks now, on 3 occassions they've turned into migraines which i dn't get when i'm not pregnat. i've been taking paracetamol which givesme about half an hour wthout and then it's back again, see MW on Wed so shall discuss it then, prob my blood pressure.

Also got a wedding to go to in Aug, have no clue what to wear, was meat to be a bridemaid but didn't think i'd look too grea waddling down the aisle! bride would like me to war similar colour to bridesmaids - could be tricky, I don't think she realises how hard it is to get a nice maternity dress never mind one in the 'right' colour!

It's raining (again) here in Oxfordshire, went looking for a mountain bike for DH yesterday, he reckons he'll use it 2 or 3 times a week, not sure when with baby #3 on the way and we also have dog that needs at least an hours walk a day!! But if it keeps him happy! I think today may have to be a baking with the kids day!

BeckyBendyLegs · 07/06/2009 10:33

Oooh thanks for the reminder about the Apprentice! I forgot the final was today.

It is raining in Shropshire - it is only 10.30am and we're bored already. The DSs are missing their daddy who is probably doing geeky things with computers at his office as I type.

katster37 · 07/06/2009 12:47

Thanks for everyone's nice comments - pinkfizzle thanks for that about amniotic sac being a shock absorber, that has actually really really reassured me.
As for dreams... Did I tell you about the one where my baby's leg kept falling off and it was floating about inside me, leg separate? Really horrid, I hate that one!!

Raggie am unbelievaby impressed you have written a report before 9am on Sunday! I have written one section of one child's.... Then I gave up. I have no motivation or stamina at the minute!

BeepBeep hope your headache has gone off. Have you taken paracetemol? I have been taking it to lower temp and GP and pharmacist (and google) have reassured me that it is fine. Also, wedding outfit in a specific colour?!?! Hmm... I am hoping I can get away with this Zara dress that really is not at all dressy but am planning to wear it anyway, with some little ballerina pumps I think, as I am a wimp with heels.

Have made it from the bed to the sofa! DH making quiche and eggy bread (am hankering after eggs, for some reason) and am going to slob in front of the telly and prepare myself for the Apprentice final. I want Kate to win!

raggie · 07/06/2009 13:34

katser my reports getting done is purely down to fear of deadlines, nothing else! They are due in a week tomorrow and so far I have done 16 (4 of them today, phew!) so I'm up against it. I just can't face doing work in the evenings after school these days, I am too knackered.

And now I have The Apprentice as my deadline for today - I would have forgotten about it too, so thanks pinkfizzle. Who do you think will win? It's too close to call I think!

PavlovtheCat · 07/06/2009 13:34

All you lot with wedding crisis' going on..I have a serious crisis too! I have to go to court to be a witness in a trial, a a professional witness (my job) but I don't usually do court these days. So, none of my suit trousers fit me! Th cheapest maternity suit I have found is £50 in next, fine but I really do not want to spend any money as I won't wear it after this day. Not unless I send another lying toerag to prison before baby is born (and its not on my 'to do' list )

What on earth am I going to do .

3rd day with no drugs and no sickness YEY! I am taking spatone and my energy levels are up, funny that seeing as midwife said I am not anaemic! Do not feel 100% regarding food, timings are a real issue, need to eat at such specific times or else I feel rotten, but its onwards and upwards from hereonin!

Hope all are having good weekends. It goes too fast doesn't it?

katster37 · 07/06/2009 14:00

Pav this is reeeally cheeky and I wouldn't normally suggest it, but could you get the Next one and keep the label on the jacket and take it back after?? I know that is awful, but jackets won't look worn with a shirt underneath and if you're careful to hang it up straight away? Also the label won't show if you don't take it off!! I know that is bad, but maybe just this once since you won't ever wear again??

katster37 · 07/06/2009 14:01

Ps you prob couldn't do it with the trousers, but they would probably end up being more useful. Hope you don't all think I am a cheapskate!
