Hello all.

First timer, and a dad, so pls be gentle!

Just been for the scan today - got the mother of all shocks ('scuse the pun) when the sonographer said it was twins.

I think I nearly had a coronary in the scan room and apparently I went completely white. The misses screamed and swore a lot, but I hope in a good way.

Anyway we have to go back on Friday to make sure all is OK. Apparently lots more scans and monitoring involved if it's twins.

Sorry for lurking on the mummy's forum but needed to get it off my chest. We are both kind of thinking: "why us?" It's a total state of shock.

I had just about got used to the idea of being a dad - and now this. I'm both delighted and petrified. But mostly petrified!

helips · 11/05/2009 14:26

Hi everyone!

Just got back from Portugal and have finally caught up with everyones posts! Congrats to everyone who have had there scans, it's such a relief isn't it! and good luck to everyone else still waiting.

We had a lovely holiday and ds was on top form all week. Now I'm just trying to get on top of the washing and ironing and really should be getiing on with it whilst ds naps but mumsnet was calling!!

I found breastfeeding quite painful in the beginning but ds was a little tongue tied which I think caused most of the problem. It does get easier though, in fact I only stopped feeding ds last week and he is 20 months!! Never intended to go that long, it just kind of happened!

I am 14 weeks today and think I can feel the baby moving already, was about 17 weeks last time but they say with the second you feel it earlier. My tummy is getting really big, it is so obvious I am pregnant and on holiday everyone kept asking me when I'm due and when I said November they would say things like 'wow and getting big already', cheers!

Hope everyone is well, now roll on the 20 week scan!!

helips · 11/05/2009 14:29

Oh, and did the chart and said I'm having a girl, but then said that should have had a girl last time and I have ds!

Congrats manfrom am sure the news will sink in for you and dw soon, there are a few others on here expecting twins too. Just think, twice the fun!

BeckyBendyLegs · 11/05/2009 14:34

Hello manfrom congrats on the twins! I think that's great!!! I think I'd go white too... when I went for my scan I was sitting opposite a poster which headlined 'expecting twins or more?' and I thought 'oooh it's a sign!' but it wasn't.

The chart is supposed to be about 90% accurate. It's probably a load of twaddle but fun to check and see.

southernbelle77 · 11/05/2009 14:40

Ooh, that gender chart is intersting! It was right, saying that dd would be a girl!

This time round it would depend (if it was right!). If I conceived whilst on holiday in Hawaii then it will be a boy and if I conceived on my birthday then it will be a girl! Will be interesting to see!!

Koumak · 11/05/2009 14:49

manfrom welcome do we know your wife or are you very new? Congratulations. I believe that is our third set of twins here! twice as joy right?

just looked at the chart and they got it wrong with ds - now are saying should be boy again - am thinking otherwise so lets see!

manfrom · 11/05/2009 15:09

Koumak - no my wife is not on here (at least not that I know)...

I have been on MN over the last weeks primarily to research what I should know; it's been very useful. The mrs has been amazed at how well informed I am about pregnancy (ha!). She has had terrible morning sickness - more like all day and night sickness - and I have been checking to find out whether it was normal. The sonographer said that the symptoms were often worse if you had twins. Something to do with hormones. I was starting to think she was putting it on for effect. Thank god I didn't insinuate anything like that - I would have been a dead man walking today, now that we know the real reason.

southernbelle77 · 11/05/2009 16:38

Hi manfrom and welcome! Congratulations to you both for the twins! I think it's a very good job you didn't insinuate anything to your wife about her putting it on!! Hormonal woman are bad enough at the best of times, let alone when we are told we are putting things on and being irrational

Hi manfrom and congratulations! I can totally understand your fear - I would be petrified too, but I'm sure once you get used to everything it is great fun and, of course twice as much love!

There's also a Multiple Births (I think it's called) thread on here that might be useful. Oh, and we're very gentle on this thread. If sometimes a bit too graphic...

katster37 · 11/05/2009 17:04

Koumak you're definitely not a terrible mother!! Hope you got what you wanted from Bond St!

According to the chart I am having a boy, so we will see!

Have spent all day with my trousers undone They fit a week ago!! Now I have an imprint of the button from when I attempted to wear them first thing... Oh dear. Won't have chance to get to the shops 'til the weekend so not sure what I will be wearing for the rest of the week!!

And welcome to manfrom! How exciting that you are having twins!!! When are they due?

Well, despite the gorgeous weather I have a mad craving for steak pie and mash, so going to call in for a really lovely homemade one from the shop round the corner on my way home! Yum!

BeckyBendyLegs · 11/05/2009 17:45

Katster have you got any dresses or leggings? Or hipster trousers perhaps?

We've just had ice lollies outside - lovely.

Mmmm I want to eat steak pie and mash now. DH is making me eat healthily so we're having fish, baked potato and carrots. Not the most exciting meal on the planet.

turtle23 · 11/05/2009 18:16

According to the chart DS is a boy and so is number two. Bugger.
I am beginning to get worried as I have only gained half a pound and by this time last time I had gained over a stone!!! Makes waiting for my scan a bit nerve wracking. Am I the only one left to have a scan It's not til next Monday!

lemontop · 11/05/2009 18:28

tamlin I tried looking all over for maternity clothes. In next and mothercare trousers were massive on me and seemed to be for very heavily pregnant people. I'm too big for topshop and the largest size in gap was trouser size 4!
I got some leggings from dorothy perkins and mamas and papas. M&P have a fake baby bump in the changing room to try on with your clothes which made me laugh!
I think I'm going to stick to leggings (sooo comfy! who cares if they are flattering) and buy myself some loose dresses.

laugs I'll try new look for jeans. I think button ones may be better.
Wedding is on August 1st. I've bought my dress. Never thought I'd be getting married in a maternity wedding dress-but there you go! It's a register office do then we've hired our local pub and are going to have a bbq reception. Very informal but there still seems to be a mountain load to organise!

Laugs · 11/05/2009 18:34

lemontop your weding sounds fabulous - really relaxed and lovely. We got married at the end of December. Our whole thing was in a pub as they had a marriage licence, and it worked really well. Very jealous of you getting to have a barbecue though!

Laugs · 11/05/2009 18:34

wedding, I meant

BeckyBendyLegs · 11/05/2009 18:36

Turtle you'll just have to keep going like me then! I have a friend, whom I might have mentioned here before, who has six boys and aims to keep going until she gets a girl. Mad woman. Have you been more sick with this pg than before? That would explain less weight gain. I think you might be one of the last scanners!

Lol at the fake baby bump! I might have to take a trip to Birmingham to M&P just to see this for myself!!!

I live in my leggings at the moment - I've been a bit of a hippy chick in my past so I have lots of long tops / dresses to wear on top. That should keep me going for a month or so.

lemontop so exciting getting married! Sounds lovely. Good luck with the organising. Excel spreadsheets. That's my advice.

Laugs · 11/05/2009 18:45

turtle my scan is on Thursday. I keep getting jealous of everyone else who isn't being sick any more and then I remember I seem to be a couple of weeks behind most people (I'm 12+2 now, I think).

katster37 · 11/05/2009 19:01

Laugs I am 12+2 as well! Was sick first thing this morning, as always, but felt remarkably OK for the rest of the day so maybe it's on its way out?? It's horrible waiting for scans, isn't it? I ended up in such a state before mine, was virtually in tears on the bus all the way to the hospital. Where is your scan? Will be thinking of you on Thurs.

pinkfizzle · 11/05/2009 20:14

Hey manfrom congrats, we have a daddy and another set of twins in the house, welcome!

MS can be 24 hr sickness, and I am sure if you try cheer up your mrs and do all you can for her it will help her and score you jesus points!

laugs yikes, my ms is still going at 15 weeks.

lemontop i'm sure you will have a fab day.

I'm probably going to depress myself by watching the lost in case doc on tv, I hate how long it takes for kiddies in care to be adopted in the uk... but I will remind myself of this lovely thread where we all want to welcome their bubs into this world. Have a lovely week all.

hobnob57 · 11/05/2009 21:37

Hi Gals (and manfrom!)

Finding it hard to keep up with lots of reports to write at the moment (and zero motivation to do them). Thank goodness I'm feeling less like death in the evenings.

turtle I think I'm still losing weight at about 14 weeks - I'm not being sick any more (well, not since Friday, anyway) but I just don't feel like eating much when I do eat.

Saying that, can I just say mmmmmmmmmmm buttered ricecakes!

Struggling again with being positive about this pg. The flutters I felt last week have died down and I've got nothing to keep reminding me I'm pg like nausea. Need to Get a Grip.

Does anyone do Pilates? If so, do you know of anything we shouldn't be doing at this stage? I went tonight again for the first time since my scan and ducked out of anything that involved lying on my belly and anything that aggravated my SPD, but other than that the wee sit-up things we do didn't seem to be a problem, etc. Just don't want to do something dangerous by accident.

scarlotti · 11/05/2009 22:03

Welcome manfrom hope your dw isn't feeling too rotten. I felt dreadful so went for acupuncture which really helped, couldn't have got through the last 8 weeks without it so it's another option.

Weight loss?!?! I've put on about 9lbs already - so much for the suggested weight gain of 2lbs in the first trimester. Sigh.

brightonbaby · 11/05/2009 22:34

Hi Everyone,

It was fantastic telling my parents the good news, especially on Mum's birthday. There was no need to have been anxious at all!

Had my 12 week scan today and the baby was too small to do the nuchal test. It was 43mm, so I'm a bit worried now. Have to go back in a week. It's CRL was in the lower 5th centile.

Does anyone know anything about this?..if the baby is that small at this age? Would be good to hear experiences, although, I'm trying not to worry too much yet.

Just catching up on the weekend's thread
