ursigurke · 07/05/2009 10:05

EasyEggs - just read your post. good luck for your scan, I'm sure, everything will be fine. And as you and weston I had problems with my husband yesterday and this morning. Maybe it has more to do with football than with us
But seriously, I think I didn't have any problems with my mood at the beginning, it's rather the last days that I got this "pregnancy symptom". I hope it's just temporary.

turtle23 · 07/05/2009 10:34

Tigger- About your not being allowed in the MLU if you have depression...that is just not right. They have no right to say that. Have a chat with the head of midwives!!

pinkmich1972 · 07/05/2009 10:37

Hello all, have not written for ages
well I am still here, took ages to read through everyone, glad to here all the good news about scan and sorry for all the sad news.
My update god so much to say
Well to cut the very long strong short!
I went to hospital with spotting all fine, then went to hospital with shoulder pain, and they found i have a blood clot on my lungs, very scarey!
So now i have to inject into my tummy twice a day with clexane, to stop any more clots (this drug does not go through to the baby).
So my tummy all bruised and sore, however i had my scan on tuesday and i was 12 weeks and five days, baby looked all good, swimming around.
So overall feeling better!
My sickness still here in the evening yuk.
I am intrested in the talk about both Sure starts and Managers! As i am just that a manager at a sure start children's centre, Do not think i am a bad manager, maybe you should ask my staff?
Anyone glad i am still here!!

scarlotti · 07/05/2009 11:16

Just a quick hello from me to say good luck to easyeggs for your scan this morning.
Weston great news on your scan today.

Congrats to all the other succesful scans, sorry not to name you individually but there's so much to catch up on!

grace09 · 07/05/2009 12:13

Hi ladies, not posted for a while. Great to hear all the positive scans. Was really interested in the nuchal scans chat. Don't even know if they do this in Glasgow so will need to speak to gp but the whole thing has opened a can of worms with me and DH as in he wants the tests/scan and i don't. Has anyone else had disagreement with their partner on this? Fell we're going to have to get lots more info on it then we can properly talk about it (without me just bursting into to tears!) and hopefully come to a decision.
pinkmich - i'm injecting clexane into my stomach too. It's horrible isn't it? Feels as if you are injecting your wee baby but obviously you're not. Lots of lovely bruising to contend with too - i'm starting to run out of space that isn't bruised!

scarlotti · 07/05/2009 12:23

Here (in Brighton) we get the option of a local dating scan at 12 weeks or the nuchal one but have to travel to London for it. If you opt not to have the nuchal, you can have the triple test (now the quad test) which gives the same accuracy level but is done at 16 weeks.
We decided that we'd just have the quad test. If the baby has downs, it won't change things for us but we'd like to be prepared with the knowledge if poss. Travelling to London meant time off work which we couldn't afford.
The reason most opt for the nuchal is that if you get a high probability and want to go down the amnio route, you will have all that done by say 13 weeks. You can then opt for a termination (if you chose) at a time when you probably haven't felt baby move and at what is still considered early stages.
You can still have a termination at 17 weeks once you've had quad test and then amnio, but obviously the later it is the harder it is and more recovery would be needed after.

It all boils down to personal preference.

grace try and isolate how you would react if you were told the likelihood of downs was high. how would dh react? Use that then to gauge what type of testing, if any, to have.

beepbeep · 07/05/2009 12:37

Hi all

Going on holiday tomorrow!! We're up to the Lake District for ten days, so just messing on the computer to avoid the washing and packing i have to do - mamoth task for me, DH a 2 year old and a 10 month old - it'll be a joy with another i'm sure.

We have nuchal first day back, it cost us £180 for other 2 pregnancies but Oxfordshire have just put it on the NHS. We had it the last couple of times, despite the cost for a number of reasons, one being reassurance, but not just to do with downs, but we found the scans were a lot longer and a lot more in depth than normal NHS ones, sonographers looked at all the babies digits, brain, spine, heart etc etc and as well as reassurance it was lovely to see all these things. When we have nuchal now they do bloods at the same time, the results of nuchal measurements, bloods and age etc are then send off for analysis and we get the results by post approx 10 days after. It is wrong that it depends on where you live as to whether you are offered the scan or not, but also feel that everyone should fully understand what the scan is about. I wonder how many people didn't have it before of the cost but change there mind now?

Tigger - my SIL was on anti-depressants during her 2nd pregnancy due to pretty bad PND after 1st, they certainly seemed to work for her, I don't think it's anything uncommon. I get really low in the first few months of my pregnancies and then seem to pick up - almost like 1st trimester depression! obviously the hormones. But surely you should still be able to go to MLU, particularly as it may actually help you, i.e. it's what you want so maybe it would make you feel more positive? Good luck anyway, hopefully you can convince them!

tigger32 · 07/05/2009 12:53

Hello,
Well I've been to see my doctor who is trying persuade me to go and see a consultant psychiatrist who will give antid's and will monitor me throughout the pregnancy.
I have said I don't want to take any meds at the minute and have asked her to refer me back to my councilor which she has agreed on but has said if things don't pick up or I get worse the psychiatrist is the next step!

pinkmich sorry to hear you have been so poorly but good news on your scan!

turtle The MLU in our town has a name for having a very high criteria on who they will take for delivery, they refused me on both my previous pregnancy due to mental health saying that they couldn't provide me with the aftercare I may need, the ironic thing is I gave birth in a MLU in the next town in the end but then was transferred back to the care of my local midwifes once I had delivered, so they had to give me the care I needed (although I was fine after giving birth)
I have decided that if they change their minds and say they won't take me I'll transfer back to the next town again.
sorry for ramble]
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for good scan news today

LissyGlitter · 07/05/2009 13:01

We have had the disability/termination debate too. I would want to keep the baby, unless it actually had no chance of survival, DP would want a termination for an awful lot of disabilities, which I find shocking as he used to be married to somebody who was quite severely physically disabled. He's started refusing to talk to me about it, as he says there's no point as he thinks I have already made up my mind, but I don't like that as what if the baby is born disabled? Will he blame me? Then again, he asked me to have a termination with DD just because it wasn't convenient for me to be pregnant then, and he adores her now.

Tamlin · 07/05/2009 13:10

I think I'm firmly in the 'forewarned, forearmed' camp when it comes to prenatal testing. An friend of mine has a Down's baby who's needed multiple heart surgeries, and he's not even quite a year old. Even if we decided against termination, I would want to know if my child had a condition which might necessitate a lot of treatment just so I could start researching things and get a support network built up in advance (not to mention possibly change plans to do with DS and my work); I imagine it's very hard to try and do all of this with a high-needs newborn while still in shock.

I'll admit that like beepbeep, we found that the John Radcliffe spends a lot of time during the nuchal checking all the baby's limbs, the spine, the stomach and the skull, and I found this hugely reassuring - much more so than the NHS's 'Yup, live baby, off you go and don't forget to pay for the pic'. I feel that there's a lot less to worry about when the anomaly scan rolls around.

chocotastic · 07/05/2009 13:39

Hi all
Not been on for a couple of weeks as got back to work after maternity leave last week and things have been manic. Was really dreading telling them I'm only back for 5/6 months before going off on maternity leave again but I bit the bullet and told everyone yesterday and it went down surprisingly well. Phew!! Now I can breathe out and stand normally without worrying about everyone spotting my little bump!!

Great to see it has been all good news on the scan front recently and good luck to all those still waiting.

Ninjacat · 07/05/2009 13:45

I'm back from the mw.
They've put me on half consultant half mw led care - not really sure why or what that means but have consultant app on May 19th.

Still no scan.

I woke up last night having a panic attack - apparently this is pretty normal in pg according to mw so thought I'd share that with you.

Now the really shocking news: I've gaind 2stone!!!!! OMG!!!! Need to get that under control or it will be 6stone by the end of the pg.

Good luck with all the scans.
Big love to the stomach injectors, what a horrid thing to have to do!

Never had any contact with sure start, don't really know what they are.

beepbeep hope you enjoy the holiday.

skorpion · 07/05/2009 14:37

Hi All, not been on for a while.

Just had my booking appt with MW today - very friendly and nice. Got a huge amount of paperwork to go through including Pregnancy Book. Opened it at random page, turned out to be labour... what on earth are they thinking printing pictures?!?
DH had a look and went green... and he doesn't have to do it.

I got an option of delivering in the mw-led unit in Chipping Norton, I think it's worth a look.

My scan will be done at Horton in Banbury, have to pay £130 for nuchal and bloods. A friend of mine had hers in Stoke Mandeville for free, it's only a few miles away!

beepbeep have a great holiday. It's such a beautiful part of the country.

EasyEggs · 07/05/2009 14:55

Hello ladies, I'm back from my scan and very pleased to report that everything looks fab

Still measuring exact on dates, NT measurements all fine and a very wiggly happy baby, have put pics in profile if you want to see.

I'm so happy now

Koumak · 07/05/2009 15:01

I just wanted to say that we too had the disabilities conversation and my dh was quite sure that we would terminate. I was a bit taken a back but I am not sure that I would be able to take care of disabled baby. I am just not sure how big a person I am that?s all. Then again I have never been put in that position so it?s difficult to say. Now I am thinking that we have been given the all clear of downs but what if they find something at 20 weeks scan or what the baby is actually born with downs (5% are apparently never found out till birth). Would I look at the baby and think - I would?ve killed you if I knew? God not sure I could!
Sorry that was a bit depressing!

Now tell me how bad Parma ham really is? I have been craving it for so long I finally gave in today and had the whole pack with mozzarella for lunch.
And for the record I have put on half a stone already!

Congratulations on all the scans!

BeckyBendyLegs · 07/05/2009 15:15

Congrats Easyeggs - another good scan.

Good luck tomorrow Belgiunbun and Katster and any other scanners tomorrow xxx

Skkorpion go to Chippy! I highly recommend it. I had DS2 there and they are lovely and the hospital is fab. Ask about the baths with lavender and camemoile (sp?) when you go for a visit. I wish I could go back there this time but sadly 100 miles away now They were really helpful to me with breastfeeding too - it is like a home from home there.

Beepbeep enjoy your hols!

skorpion · 07/05/2009 15:45

BBL thanks, they said I can have a tour any Saturday. I'll definitely have a go.

Mind you, it was extremely weird when they asked me where I thought I'd like to deliver. Deliver?! I am only 10 weeks and a bit. Way to early for that, isn't it?

BeckyBendyLegs · 07/05/2009 15:49

It is a bit early to be asking that but then again I remember when I lived in Oxfordshire I was asked by my GP when I was just 7 weeks and had gone to see her to say 'yeah I am pregnant' and I just replied with 'errrr, there's a choice?' She told me I could chose either JR, Horton or Chipping Norton. It is hard to imagine that far ahead.

lemontop · 07/05/2009 15:49

Hi everyone

I haven't been on for a while. I got the results for the combined nuchal yesterday as my hospital do the blood tests then phonecall/letter thing. I'm not entirely sure how to interpret the results (1:4200)but I assume that means things are ok! I don't ahve my next scan till I'm 22 weeks which is in July. So far away.

I'm 14 weeks today (yay!). Constipation is back with a vengenace (boo). I also have the going to the toilet a million times before bed thing and have been having some really weird dreams. I'm also having a really dozy day. I put pepper on my custard and took my photocopying to the toilet today!

BeckyBendyLegs · 07/05/2009 15:58

That means you have a 1 in 4,200 risk of having a baby with downs I think. So ergo a very low risk!

beepbeep · 07/05/2009 16:08

Skorpion - I'm having my nuchal and bloods at Horton (have moved it from JR2) and it's free on the NHS, you should only have to pay if you have opted to arrange it privately. All of Oxon now offers it free (SIL had hers last week and it was free). I'd check it out (that is unless you have opted for private and i'm assuming otherwise!). By the way I would also say go to Chippy, but if it your first you may feel more comfortable in a hospital (I struggled with not knowing how i'd cope with the pain - thought i'd need a general!) so again chose Horton over JR2 (tho official i should go to JR) and they were great, am going to Horton again this time. By the way, it doesn't really matter if you change your mind later on doen the line (I did first time and caused no probs). At a push (tho don't think the hospitals like it much) you could ask to transfer to Chippy after hosp birth for some TLC and breastfeeding help. Good luck x

Tamlin · 07/05/2009 16:14

I also heard great things about the Chipping Norton place while I was living in Oxfordshire. Wish we had somewhere like that over here - all our mw-led units seem to have been shut down so you have a choice between oh, a hospital or a hospital or a home birth if you feel like risking it when half an hour from a hospital...

skorpion · 07/05/2009 16:37

beepbeep - this is strange, I wasn't offered NHS nuchal scan, they told me that they only do it in the private clinic there. I had this arranged some time ago now, is this a new thing? I'll call them and find out, thanks for the information.

Tbh, I have not even considered what the options are, way too early. I can only just start to believe that I'm pg... I think I can visit both Chippy and Horton, wait and see.

Thanks again.

BeckyBendyLegs · 07/05/2009 16:52

You don't have to decide yet - and really I'm sure you could just turn up in labour and say 'I'm having a baby!'. But good idea to visit all the possibles. I had DS1 in JR and was transferred to Chippy who helped me hugely with breastfeeding as my nipples were in shreds thanks to the JR's lack of consistency in breastfeeding advice. It's a shame Chippy don't let people transfer so much now. They should do as it really helped me. They are probably just too busy, like all the midwives in this country
