Good luck for your C section on the 19th Uwila. I'll be in an exam then so I'll be thinking of you. Hope everyone is ok.

tribpot · 07/05/2005 12:12

God Pink, the mere thought of taking exams now . Hope you're doing okay.

Uwila, I think fish oils are where you are going wrong, cos they contain Omega 3 and not Omega 6 (or something). I'm sure if you just ate a bunch of avocados or flaxseed all your problems would be solved. Nannythug will be able to explain all should you wish to broach this subject! (I wouldn't if I were you).

Jonah - normal-sized kids seem like a good idea til you think through the implications, don't they? I'm not sure any of us know our baby's size accurately though, do we? Bump size is not a reliable indicator, as I understand it, maybe those of us who've been scanned recently have a more accurate idea ...

I think I'm going to send dh off to Argos to get me one of these ball things, I'm anticipating definite backache from having to go to work next week. Hence swimming cossie purchase to make the most of the hotel pool. Fortunately the top part arrived this morning so I have the entire ensemble before departing for Leeds, hurrah!

Hi

Lua - highlights will hide grey hair really well if you have fairish or mousey hair. Not sure how they'd work with dark hair though - I imagine you to have thick dark hair for some reason, maybe I'm wrong. But if you have, then I'd probably just use a wash in colour as close to your own colour as possible for grey that you can buy from anywhere. People your age can easily get away with this. Then, in millions of years when you've got a lot of grey, I'd get it highlighted then. Lighter hair tends to suit better as you get older (and greyer) I think. I never go to the salon either and do my hair myself. They always seemed to mess my hair up anyway. The wash in colourants shouldn't be any more toxic than a normal shampoo so you wouldn't have to worry about harsh chemicals.

There's nothing on my notes about percentile - do you have to work it out yourself somehow? I don't understand them at all.

Well done for finding another nanny Uwila - hope this one works out for you.

charleypops · 07/05/2005 12:17

Does anyone know how old an average (say 7ish lbs) baby is before he gets to be about !0lbs? I want to buy a grobag, but most of them state the baby has to be 10lbs. Wondering if it's worth buying one specifically for a newborn, but this might not last very long....

Cooperoo · 07/05/2005 13:01

Hi Charley
Just a quicky as should be doing Usborne order. Percentile is just where your babies measurements are based on the average ie 50th percentile is average size uk child h/e the charts in the red book (you get when baby is born) are based on bottle fed babies so always worth taking with a pinch of salt. No-one has mentioned the size of my baby either and I only think they mention this in cases like Lua's etc where a big baby maybe expected due to her GD. Even scans can be notoriously unreliable from what I can gather so this is probably why. My expected small baby was 8lb 7 so there is no telling. My friend was told from scans to expect a 10lber but her baby was 8lb 8 so it is obiously hard to measure accurately.
Just for your info my dd was 10lb by 4 weeks old. An 'average' baby reaches this weight by 6 weeks according to my chart. HTH.

Cooperoo · 07/05/2005 13:03

Hello to Pink too. Really good luck with your exams!!!!

uwila · 07/05/2005 13:20

Pink, was just wondering about you. Thanks for popping in. I don't know how you do it. Exams... oh God, perish the thought. I think you deserve a medal just for showing up.

Charley, I'd skip the grobags for early days. Chances are it will be too hot anyway. And, I think they are not recommended for newborns. They can't move around much at that stage anyway, and so I'm not sure how much benefit a grobag is as I always thought the great feature of a grobag is that they can't kick it off.

charleypops · 07/05/2005 16:01

Thanks Uwila and Coop - think I'll wait a while before I get a grobag - I've a feeling this is going to be a HOT summer (fingers crossed anyway) We had a rubbish one last year, the one previous wasn't that great either so I think we're about due for a long hot one.

Speaking of heat, both times I've been to look round the ward (went again yesterday as part of an "Active Birth" class), it's been incredibly hot. In fact I was actually sweating in the pool room (dodgy air con apparently, and air seemed dry as it hadn't been used for a couple of days), and it'll be much hotter in June. I'm really not looking to labouring in that sort of heat

Coop, thanks for that info about the percentile stuff. I wonder why it's just based on the average bottle fed child though? Surely most babies are breastfed these days?

katzguk · 07/05/2005 16:07

the maternity hospital here was roasting!!

berolina · 07/05/2005 16:23

Just attempted to catch up, but have an annoying headache (the kind you get in two points between the eyes, one each side) - it's only very mild but conpletely wrecking my concentration (just types 'time' for 'kind' and 'mind' for 'mile'), so I think I give us for now. Just want to drop in (just typed 'drop it' - and am now psml at not even being able to manage 'grin' witout typing 'grid') and say hi

berolina · 07/05/2005 16:25

rofl - I meant 'mile' for 'mild'!
I give up

Cooperoo · 07/05/2005 18:01

Oh Bero - Hope you feel better soon.
Charley - I think all the maternity wards are REALLY hot. DH was recommended to bring shorts and t-shirt to wear while I was in labour and I recommend bringing your own pillow as the heat coupled with plastic pillowcases and sheets is dreadful. I had dd in March and it was unusually hot at the time but we were roasting on the ward. It was SO hot. I think this was def a factor in my stripping naked while in labour....
I am pretty sure that most babies are bottle fed too.
I would wait for the grobag too. Sheets will be fine, but where were you two years ago??? That summer had the hottest day on record didn't it? I was in Kent that day with dd visiting my dad. Our car didn't have air con and my dear stepdad insisted on driving me and dd down from Suffolk and then Dad drove us home as their cars did have air con. It was when DH was here in Cyprus before I came out and it was hotter in the UK for a few days.
Kat - did you get my email?

Cooperoo · 07/05/2005 18:04

Hi Kat - Just got your email thanks.
Charley - I mean I think more babies are bottle fed not most......

charleypops · 07/05/2005 18:31

Coop - really? more babies are bottlefed than breastfed?! Wow! I'm suprised! I have been living under a stone How sweet of your dads to chauffeur you in their air con cars. Still can't remember much hot weather though - bet it didn't last long.

Berolina - hope your headache goes soon I haven't had one for a while, I'd forgotten but up until a couple of weeks ago I'd be getting them every day. They're not nice.

Back to my anti-natal class on Wed - Is it common knowledge that you have to sterilize everything that goes near a baby's mouth for the whole of the first year? I would've thought that just hot water and washing up liquid was fine for a food bowl and spoon or whatever when he's on to solids?

charleypops · 07/05/2005 18:31

I thought it was important not to be too sterile with a baby as it's the first year is the optimum time for a baby to develop it's immunity?? Wasn't there a conclusive study in the BMJ about this? The mw who took the class was absolutely adamant about steilizing everything. I mean - don't babies crawl around and put toys and stuff in their mouths all the time before they're a year old??

Cooperoo · 07/05/2005 18:38

Hi Charley,
That sounds a bit extreme to me. I stopped sterilising at 6 months. I think there is a thread on bottle/bfeeding thread at the mo but haven't looked at it.
I could be wrong about the bottle fed thing but don't think so. I am sure the UK has the lowest rate of b/f babies in Europe or something. I don't know why. I loved it!

mrsflowerpot · 07/05/2005 18:52

Charley - sterilising for a whole year? Is the woman mad? I did for about 6 months I think - I do remember sterilising spoons for a while (weaning started at 4 months in the dark ages of four years ago) but once ds was mobile I think I just thought b*gger that. Dishwasher always seemed good enough to me tbh, it gets v hot in there.

Berolina, hope your headache is better, just saw your other thread - sounds like a migraine to me, horrible things, but hope you've managed to reach your midwife if you need some reassurance.

Have just done a big order on next online for ds - it being totally pointless to buy myself summer clothes I have been transferring retail therapy to him. Really want to get some baby clothes too, but I can't remember what we have up in the loft (must must must send dh up there to bring them down this weekend). I had my bag packed by this stage last time, this time I have a bit of paper with a vague list saying 'breast pads' and 'big pants' on it. Time to get organised I think.

Hope you're all having good weekends.

Cooperoo · 07/05/2005 19:03

Mrs F lol about your list for big pants and breastpads. I know the feeling. Tomorrow is 'new baby day'. I have to get sorted. I do actually think I have everything I need but nothing is ready ie clean, packed, organised etc.
DH pointed out I need to pack a bag for dd too as she won't be looked after at home sadly (the lady who is helping me has 3 children of her own.) This made me quite . I am sure she will be ok though. I have told the baby to come in the middle of the night so that dh can be back with dd before she wakes up. I am not sure s/he was listening though.

mrsflowerpot · 07/05/2005 19:06

Oh, I know, I'm feeling really bad about ds too. Have two good friends lined up to look after him, and MIL is coming down asap so I know he will be well looked after, but I am just hating the thought of having to leave him that day. Still waiting on the c-section decision, but at least if it happens that way I can plan it properly for him.

katzguk · 07/05/2005 19:08

evening all

Re sterilising i did for expressed milk if i wanted to store it, i found that if i didn't then it would turn very quickly and i didn't like to waste it! the dishwasher was fine, i used to put the breast pump in and then the first time it was opened would construct the breats pump and bottles ready for expressing.

charleypops · 07/05/2005 19:12

Lol MrsF at your "vague list"!

I didn't really like to say anything, but at the class on Wednesday, when the mw was talking about sterilizing, I mentioned to her, in front of everyone else (17 of us), that someone I know just washes her baby's dishes in hot water and washing up liquid along with everything else. She said, quite forcefully that the woman was therefore putting her baby's life at risk and she was glad she didn't know this woman and went on like that for quite some time. She said the woman in question must be a bit of a nutter and had the rest of the class laughing at her "stupidity" I must say I found it all a bit rude and I was quite humiliated and angry and in too much shock at her reaction to to into one about immunity etc in front of everyone.

This is a mw who is very likely to my home visitor!

charleypops · 07/05/2005 19:14

We're in a tiz about what to do with our dog when the time comes!!

Cooperoo · 07/05/2005 19:14

There are certainly advantages to having a planned c/section aren't there.

katzguk · 07/05/2005 19:14

i didn't sterilse any of DD's weaning stuff!! i'm a bad mother!!! she seems fine!!

katzguk · 07/05/2005 19:16

we have a friend who normally house sits and dogs sits so his on standby for when the baby comes!! plus if its the middle of the night he'll look after DD to!
