Hello everyone! Sorry I haven't posted in so long, it has been sort of busy, and sort of not, but I couldn't really face reading all the posts and the longer it went on the less I felt like it. A take-out pizza got me in the mood though!
Everything is OK with Nathan, or as OK as it can be anyway. He's still very tiny, but is fighting. He is having my milk now, through a nasal tube at a rate of 1.5ml per hour, and he is tolerating it well and putitng on weight - this morning he weighted a "whopping" 790g which is a great improvement on his birth weight of 620g (they are about 1lb 11 and 1lb 5 in old money I think).
He's had some trouble with his breathing, including a horrible incident yesterday when his saturation went really far down and the nurse didn't notice as she was looking after the other baby, but he's still going. We won't know what damage if any has been done to his brain until much later on - not just on this incident but after being born blue with the cord around his neck, and then after the low oxygen times whilst they were initially ventilating him. But the good news is that they have finally got him to tolerate a change in ventilatino - from the oscillation pattern to the breath pattern. This is great as he'll need this to be transferred.
He has a very wide open PDA (heart duct) which will need to be closed surgically, this is typical for premmie babies, and we're on the waiting list for great ormond street and/or st thomas's in london. We might be able to take him back to a closer london hospital after that too, which would mean we could go home. 4 weeks of living in a hospital is driving me a bit mad.
Anyway, the main thing is that Nathan is still with us, he is opening his eyes, looking around and wiggling his arms and legs too. He has recently discovered that he can put his fingers in his mouth, even if it's a bit difficult to get past the breathing tube and to angle his hand so his canula doesn't knock him in the face. He is VERY cute too, and we love him soooo much.
Was amused by your lists of things to buy for your babies, will have to get shopping myself in the next few months. We have nothing at all, except some muslin squares and a stuffed elephant. Lucky the NHS is lending him about £100,000 of equipment to lie in then!
Hope everyone else is OK and that SPD subsides, muscle tears heal up or at least cause no more pain, and depressions lift. Enjoy the sunshine ladies and hopefully speak soon to you all again
Love Michaela
