Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hmmm, Northern Line or Victoria Station - neither of those would fill me with joy! When we first came back to the UK we were staying with DH's grandfather and had to go through Victoria every morning - it was a miracle that I didn't kill anyone in the 3 months I was passing through there! And the Northern Line is always so packed.
We live on the Bakerloo, which is relatively civilised, but still drives me mad, and am dreading the summer heat!! Mind you, having said that, when I get back to Auckland and am sitting in my car in traffic, I'll be wishing I was on the tube so I can read a book. I do think the tube is a wonderful thing, especially when you think about how many people it moves each day - Auckland is about the same geographical size as London, but it would be incredibly difficult to live there without a car, whereas there's only the odd occassion in London where I wish I had a car (going to the supermarket being the main one!!). Just wish I could get my own personal carriage....

Katts · 06/05/2005 12:59

Thank god i don't have to use the tube in the morning! But bus drivers are driving me mad. Why do they have to slam on brakes and tear away from bus stops at top speed sending everyone even romotely physically challenged flying everywhere. Shouldn't they have a responsibility to their passengers to get them to their destination safely without fear of falling?

Kiwifruit · 06/05/2005 13:20

Katts - that's because they're all wanna be Formula One car drivers .

zubb · 06/05/2005 13:25

I had a couple of weeks off before ds1 was born and I was sooo bored! I'd have rather carried on working. By that stage of pregnancy I was pretty huge and didn't want to do anything very active, all my friends were still working, and I hate just sitting around watching TV. After 2 days I was on the phone to my Mum complaining about being fed up - I'd tidied everything that could be tidied, and was just sitting reading.
I didn't have public transport to contend with though, just an hour in the car each way to work which was fine.

moschops · 09/05/2005 02:33

well early morning post from me girls.......woke up needing the loo....and when i got back into bed the uncontrollable itch of thrush returned. it is really quite bad this time though. have sat in the bathroom for ten minutes with cold flannel on bits for relief, and then in desperation looked in the fridge to discover the yoghurt we bought last week was still in there and not out of date. so i've smothered myself and aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh blessed relief.

i've discovered wearing my knickers inside out helps........they are cotton apart from where the gusset is stitched in and that bit has nylon stitching...it really sets me off. i am on a search for 100% cotton knickers but so far have failed in my quest.

i can't believe i'm on an internet forum at 2.30am discussing my nether regions

jeweljilliancaitlin · 09/05/2005 03:21

Dear MOSchops I really did'nt understand what your message was really about. But reading your message I can tell tah you are from Europe perhaps England if Im not mistaken.I am from Austin,Texas & my husband is from the Netherlands.Venray Holland what a culture shock!! But I Guess the most rewarding of our oneness is our beautiful bi-racial girls because I'm part cajun/black originally from New Orleans. And by the way dont feel bad about writing at 2:30 in the morning because sometimes it's quiet alright to talk to someone who's listening.(smile)

andif · 09/05/2005 10:37

Moschops - give into the Canestan - best thing I ever did!!! Started it on Fri and now completely gone. Hadn't realised how much it was getting me down until it had gone!!
Scan today - nervous and excited!

elasticated · 09/05/2005 11:50

Hello
Been catching up on all the posts as I've been offline for a while -Andif, sounds like you had a scarey time, hope you're feeling OK now.
Thought I'd add my experiences to the themes...
Maternity clothes - can't fit into any normal clothes any more and am LOVING elasticated waists, also v excited about actually looking pregnant - was in the US last week and everyone was asking lots of questions so enjoyed all the attention!
Thrush - no sign of it yet, fingers crossed.
Ante-natal classes etc - getting more worried about missing out on these, the midwife gave me the wrong leaflet (dates too early) so have written to the hospital dept (they only communicate via letter!) and not heard back yet - worried cos I'm holding out hope for some new friends with babies (Moschops, understand how you feel completely - whole experience can be quite isolating)
Anyway, sorry for waffling - hope you're all having a good day. I'm counting down to my scan (22wks +3)this Thursday...

moschops · 09/05/2005 11:50

well i'm holding out on the Canestan till Weds because i have a midwife appt then! besides my local chemist is under new ownership and is currently closed while they refurbish so i couldn't get any now if i wanted!!

first ante-natal class tonight......decided if it is an admin error and i'm supposed to be on the next course instead they'll sort it out tonight. but with everything being oversubscribed i don't want to run the risk of losing out if they can't fit me on the next lot. i'd rather do them early than not do them at all.

zubb · 09/05/2005 12:29

good luck with the scan Andif.
Hope the thrush clears up soon Moschops - sounds grim.
Elasticated - I hope you stayed away from coffee and wine while in the States! I had to go over for work during both previous pregnancies and got lots of 'tuts' for daring to have coffee to keep me awake through the breakfast meetings that they love, and then they were in shock when I had a small glass of wine with dinner! especially given the warnings that they have on teh back of the bottles!

pooka · 09/05/2005 13:37

Moschops. My midwife said if you get thrush get it treated so you're clear by the time you're due. She said you (or one) should boil your knickers, or at least put them on a very hot wash. No thongs either!
Had my 23 weeks scan earlier. Absolutely lovely - all well and baby was the most co-operative baby ever. Actually feel like it's real now. How stupid is that???

elasticated · 09/05/2005 13:58

Oh yes - the coffee caused a few raised eyebrows but I'm not fancying any alcohol at all so got away with that one. Did have lots of people who were v suprised that I had travelled at all though - mine was work too, and our sales meetings in Florida are one of the biggest perks, as if I was going to miss out - pretty sure I put on about half a stone while I was there though, omelettes, bacon, pancakes, burgers..... mmmmmm

zubb · 09/05/2005 14:02

With ds1 I was flying up till the last point the airlines would take me, and it was mainly in the US that they seemed surprised. Would try to get me to sit down at every opportunity! If it was Europe they seemed much more used to it. With ds2 I did some travelling but not as much.
I have been to the US this pregnancy but early on when no-one knew - and just for a day so it really knackered me.
Have you got much more flying to do?

franch · 09/05/2005 14:07

On the thrush topic, I checked the NHS website and it says Canesten is fine in cream form in pregnancy. It certainly seems to have done the trick for me. I read something a while ago about a woman calling the fire brigade to her house because there was smoke everywhere - it turned out she'd put her nylon knickers in the microwave to kill the thrush and they'd burst into flames I've been popping mine in the Napisan bucket with DD's clothes - it's supposed to be germicidal so it should do the job - then on a 90-degree wash.

elasticated · 09/05/2005 14:11

Just one more trip - next time to Portugal and I'll be 28 weeks, another sales meeting so a week at a lovely hotel with plenty to eat, a pool to float in and this time d/h gets to come too (works for the same company - v handy!) - A day trip to the US early on sounds hard work, I was having touble just getting through a normal day up until about 3 weeks ago - 2nd trimester energy seems to have hit late, maybe it will last longer - here's hoping...

Kiwicath · 09/05/2005 14:44

I'll be doing a long haul one-way to New Zealand when I'm 26 weeks (arghhhh, 4 weeks away!!!) which I feel fine about (now anyway). Was surprised to find that Singapore let you on up to 35 weeks! Not so sure I'd want to wait that long. Babe #1 shot out on due date so hoping this one will to.

VirtualFairy · 09/05/2005 14:44

How did the london meetup go? have you all got nice feet now. i was sorry to miss it as had plans but would love to come to next one. so whos got the biggest bump?

as for the thrush - i had no idea you had to boil ya pants after! gonna do all mine on a 90 wash later. although yogurt worked for me and has kept it at bay for the last fortnight fingers crossed.

VirtualFairy · 09/05/2005 14:47

i am planning to go on holiday when im 29 weeks returning 2 weeks later, the airline wants a midwife letter saying i am fit and well and not about to drop but i am having problems getting insurance this late as i really want insurance to cover medical and cancelations - just in case. anyone else had this problem?

franch · 09/05/2005 14:55

VF, do an archive search on pg travel insurance and see this thread - lots of companies do it up to about 32 weeks - I'm going to the US for a wedding at 33 weeks - agh!

The London meetup is this coming Saturday (14th) - you can still come if you're free

VirtualFairy · 09/05/2005 15:08

oooh i thought it was saturday just gone - what a idiot i am - i have been fussy recently i am blameing it on my brain shrinking as it does in pregnancy.
yes i can make it then if its not too late to arrange, i will miss out on the pedicure though as i wouldnt wish my feet on anyone lol and ive never had one before and im really ticklish on my feet and im likely to embarrise myself completely by sqealing the whole way through. but meeting in the cafe souunds good.

elasticated · 09/05/2005 15:22

Kiwicath - my only advice would be to make sure you get an aisle seat then you can stick your legs out whenever possible and get up and down to stretch as much as you want without worrying about disturbing other people. Also if you can get an aisle seat in the middle section the people next to you can get out the other side and not disturb you - result! From your nickname I guess you're heading home, only been to NZ once but LOVED it - seemed like a fantastic place to bring up little 'uns

Katts · 09/05/2005 16:02

About the travel insurance, I just got single trip travel insurance through Norwich Union. I think they cover up to 28 weeks. Also rang round M&S and Tesco. They also would cover it. (Tescos cover up to 2 months before due date) Norwich Union had cheapest quote though.

I'm flying out to Florida in 2 weeks to show off the belly. Trying to get an upgrade as I've been saving up frequent flyer miles for years now but am on a waiting list. Fingers Crossed!

andif · 09/05/2005 16:10

Just back from scan and all OK. They're pretty sure it's a girl, so we're very excited - decided we will tell people as they will probably guess from our faces!
Franch, LOL at knickers in microwave. Someone suggested ironing them to do the trick - easier than a separate wash maybe?!
Virtual Fairy - will be good to see you at the meet up - I think we both have existing kids the same age? (ds1 8 , ds2 5.5)

sarahhal · 09/05/2005 16:28

Hello all, hope all is well. Just had hectic weekend with Ds's 2nd birday. Been hit by the double whammy of antibiotics and pregnancy to have the delights of thrush - am off for some Caneston cream ASAP as the thought of spending all day at work in my classroom tomorrow in this state isn't very appealing. Had scan last week and all is fine - didn't ask the sex but was really really tempted! Am convinced its another boy as my pregnancy is mirroring my first. Hope you all have a fab meet up - a bit far from Yorkshire for me!

VirtualFairy · 09/05/2005 17:08

andif- i have ds 8 next month and dd 5 1/2 too.

i have my scan thursday and i can barely contain the excitement i have been counting the days for the last 3 weeks and now its 3 days- i have an antenatal appointment too which is only my 2nd ever so i am looking forward to that finally i will beable to tell them about all my probs so far lol. i also have a birthing centre tour same day. so its a right baby day for me. if the birthing centre doesnt look appealing i am opting for a homebirth.

ooh and i am definatly going to find out if its a girl or a boy. i thought of leaving it for a surprise but i cannot help myself i really want to buy pink or blue not cream or yellow. dp wants a boy as cannot imagine another virgo girl to boss him around as dd and me are virgos and this baby if born on time will be a virgo too.
