glad you're better jm!

Got my scan in the morning 10am. can't wait!

triceratops · 12/05/2005 16:25

JM - hope you feel better soon, it all sounds horrible. At least the baby is OK, you must have been really worried.

I have bought my buggy ,carseat, cot and a tummy tub bath. It is on my interest free credit card so I don't have to pay until December. The whole house is now cluttered up with baby things. Dh is going to go spare.

mawbroon · 12/05/2005 16:38

JM Glad to hear your little one is fine. Hope you recover soon.

I got a job lot of second hand equipment from my boss so all I need to buy is something for (s)he to wear and nappies. Anyone else considering (or have experience of) reusables? I am very keen not to contribute to the 8,000,000 disposables per day which go into landfill.

jessicasmummy · 12/05/2005 16:57

i used reusables with jess until she was about 7 months old - they were fantastic. Plan to use them again on this little one... got mine 2nd hand off ebay.

if i could have afforded to get the next size up, jess would still be in them now! lets hope i can next time!

mawbroon · 12/05/2005 17:34

That's great JM. i suppose it requires a certain amount of discipline to keep on top of the washing all the time, mind you, people did it for hundreds of years before us!! Did you have one favourite type or was it a mixed selection that you bought? I have started doing my research, but it does seem a bit baffling. Maybe that's just my pregnancy dimness kicking in!!

There's probably another thread about this somewhere to confuse me even more. I will have a look.

Mawbroon: I used washables with mine until she was toilet-trained, although I didn't start until she was a few months old. The first poos are SO AWFUL, they are like something that comes out of Sellafield. They stain everything that they touch (=every item in your house).

I used Kushi's washables because they were the first brand I saw on Ebay. I loved them and they were a lot simpler than other types that I saw my friends faffing with. It's all in one so you don't need to worry about liners/covers etc.

When you have a newborn you are doing so many loads of washing a day that to be honest, another load doesn't make any difference. Newborns are constantly being sick/pooing, and you are constantly leaking and spraying milk all over your clothes/partner/visitors/soft furnishings, so the amount of washing is like nothing you have ever experienced!

morningpaper · 12/05/2005 20:13

I meant to add: I'd really recommend using disposables for the first month AT LEAST, because there is so much to learn in the early weeks, and a lot of people find that the washables tend to leak a lot on tiny babies. You don't want the extra stress of learning about the washables as well as everything else IMO. Just concentrate on the feeding (the baby and yourself!) for the first few weeks, and move on to the nappies when you are feeling up to it.

There are 'greener' disposables available, including some which are totally biodegrable.

Lexie100 · 12/05/2005 21:03

I have been looking into using reusables (i say looking i mean thinking). Anyone found a web site that tells me everything about the different types as i know nothing at the moment. in fact i didn't know there were different types. oh i have a lot to learn.

Piggiesmum · 12/05/2005 21:28

jessicasmummy - hope you feel better soon.

morningpaper at spraying milk everywhere. What an image that conjours up

I was thinking of using re-useable nappies too mainly to try and keep costs down. I read somewhere this week you can save about £500.

Thanks for the reasuurances about lack of bump. I went to Mothercare yesterday and felt abit of a fraud - surrounded by lots of obviously pg women. On the other hand we are having a weekend away in a nice hotel with swimming pool, and suddenly I am realising I do have a least some bulge and am worrying about fitting in my cossie and hoping no-one else is around as i dash from the changing rooms to the pool at 90mph

Joseyjo · 12/05/2005 21:56

thank god it is not just me!!! I am really keen not to use normal disposables, but i am struggling to make any kind of decision between reusables. I found this site:
babykind

Some councils will also subsidise laundry services and initial outlay. It is certainly worth investigating your local area.

This site also looks like it could be quite good:
nappymania

I am seriously considering splashing out on a laundry service to start with so that i avoid the 10 nappy a day washing nightmare!!!. Hopefully my dh will become so accustomed to the convenience that he will be prepared to keep paying for!! we will have to see though as it is quite expensive.
If we give up on the laundry service then i am planning to use one of the separate parts nappies when i am in and then biodegradable disposals when we are away from home.
any advice on branding would be much appreciated though.

jessicasdaddy · 12/05/2005 22:08

jm is back in hospital

alterego · 12/05/2005 22:28

Really sorry to hear that jd. Hope they can find out what the problem is.

jessicasdaddy · 12/05/2005 22:30

me too.

mishmash2 · 13/05/2005 09:41

JD - keep us posted and send our love. Do hope all is well.

morningpaper · 13/05/2005 09:58

I would really recommend AGAINST the laundry services - just because the stress of getting organised enough to have nappies ready for collection at a certain time will be immense. (I know it sounds ridiculous now.)

Also the one extra load at the end of the day really does make very little difference.

jolovett · 13/05/2005 10:19

Hey guys - sorry to hear you're still ill JM, hope you're not suffering for too much longer.

I don't know what to do about nappies - my s-i-l was dead set on using them on her first, but after the first few attempts gave up because of leaking / washing, etc. They seem really expensive to buy and the convenience of disposables sounds so much more appealing. I know it's not very eco-friendly though which is one big thing putting me off. Help! So confused!

Well after the bump disappeared on me for the start of the week it is now back twice as big - there's no denying I'm pg now!

Sooooo excited about Tuesday - get to see JJ - hurry up weekend!

mawbroon · 13/05/2005 12:36

I was laughing (sorry) at your carry on at the swimming pool Piggiesmum. I was the opposite with the swimming costume. I bought a maternity tankini at a Speedo outlet weeks and weeks ago. I have learned from experience at these outlets that you must buy something when you see it because there won't be any left next time you go and they won't get any more in because it is just the odds and ends that are left. I still don't really have a bump and feel a bit of a fraud wearing it. I am paranoid that people think that I am just wearing it because I ate all the pies. However Piggiesmum, in reality, probably no-one even batted an eyelid at you or at me!

Hope JM is better soon. (((hugs)))))

bonniej · 13/05/2005 13:23

Had my scan this morning and have found out i'm having a girl Am absolutely delighted. Everything looked fine so that'll probably be my last scan. I feel really lucky that everything so far has been ok and I can't wait to meet my new little daughter! (another plus is I won't need to go out and buy loads of baby clothes as have all dd's!!)

Sorry to hear that Jm's back in hospital. Hope you're better soon xx

mawbroon · 13/05/2005 13:36

Congratulations BonnieJ. Makes the name choosing a bit simpler

I am relying on old wives tales for gender prediction as no more scans for me

morningpaper · 13/05/2005 13:37

Yay BonnieJ! I've got a girl and I'm hoping for another because two sisters just seems yummy! (and I'm too tight to buy more clothes...)

Elf1981 · 13/05/2005 13:38

JM - get better soon.

To all having scans and finding out the sex - I'm so jealous!! We're not finding out, but I'm crossing my fingers I get a scatty scanner who slips up with "oh, he's got..." or "she's looking...". Kind of resolved to not finding out now, though in the beginning it was hard to agree to!

Ref nappies - I have decided that I'll damage the world further by using disposable ones, but resolved that I'd put extra effort into recycling bottles and paper and tins etc to balance it out. Not sure if it would, but it makes me feel slightly better!!

Joseyjo · 13/05/2005 13:50

Take care JM & JD and let us know when you know what is happening.

I have had some eco-disposable nappy samples sent from a website and they look ok. Obviously don't have anything to try them out on just yet though!!! I need to work out how much more expensive they are as well, haven't got round to that yet. all so complicated....

jolovett · 13/05/2005 14:14

Another girl - cool - looks like there's a trend starting for us October girls.

Just realised that I have to take all my holidays for rest of the year before I go on maternity leave which is over 3 weeks worth. They can't carry them over so I'm not complaining. Decided to start my maternity leave at the end of July to finish building the house! That means I have to take these holidays sharpish or use them before the maternity leave for an extra few weeks. Can't wait to have some time to myself - it's going to be wierd though - I've always worked since I was 16 so doing nothing for a few months sounds a scary thought. At least I've got the house and the wedding videos to keep me occupied.

bonniej · 13/05/2005 15:13

morningpaper, that's what I thought. I think it's really nice for my dd to be having a sister. shell be just over 2 when dd2 comes along, also the saving on clothes will be fantastic. Elf, be careful if the sonographer does refer to your little one as 'he'. They did this with my niece who didn't really want to find out the sex but was then convinced it was a boy only to have a girl! I think some refer to all babies as 'he'. If you look close enough at the scan you can see. this time it was really clear, as she was measuring the thigh I got a good look and could see there was no 'dangly bits' so sort of knew before I asked.

Donbean · 13/05/2005 15:20

Fantastic news BonnieJ, a baby girl, absolutely fantastic Cant WAIT to see your picture!
Lots and lots of love and best wishes from me and J xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
