Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
corgikelly · 24/03/2009 18:26

I was actually kind of horrified by the stats - over 90 per cent of women here opt for an epidural! Goes a long way to explaining why my OB was kind of dismissive of the back labour thing...

Here's another scary stat within one week of leaving hospital, only 10 per cent of Belgian women are still breast-feeding. It's definitely a bottle-oriented culture (lactation consultants really don't exist, for example). That's why I was so happy to find a Belgian offshoot of the NCT here though they don't have trained lactation consultants, they do have members who have breastfed at least two children for at least six months, and they volunteer to help new moms who are having a hard time with bf'ing (you can call them, they'll come visit, etc.). Otherwise I'd be feeling a bit on my own...

jollyjoanne · 24/03/2009 18:48

Being a first time mum and only for the last 2 weeks I know it isn't much to go on, but once you are through the first week breastfeeding seems OK. The first week was hard work but now Mae seems to have taken to it so it seems daft to give up at this point!

Also had back to back labour although didn't know that until I was in labour and Mae was stuck. No back pain in pregnancy, and only really period pain sort of back ache during labour, but then I did have an epidural at the end as Mae was stuck, so may be this would have been where the pain would have been so much worse!

Congrats to yet more new mums and quick, painless labour vibes to those who need them.

Titmouse

Yes I would say i am taking longer to recover. Although Robert is only 3 days old, i am unable to stand for long periods. No more then 5mins. I mean today I was barely able to move after just washing and putting his bottles in the sterliser (am not producing any milk again).

With my other 2 i was up and cooking, cleaning within a day. DH is just doing everything for me. Mind you it could be that i suffering more because i'm nearly 40 and tired from looking after a 5yr and 18mth.

Boobz · 24/03/2009 21:15

Hi all!

How is everyone doing? Huge congrats to Laurenypops, Fruity, Yarnie, Superjump, PHW, Lizziemun, Law and Livismum !!! Can't believe 9 of us have popped since last Wednesday... coming thick and fast. All such lovely names - have you all got pics of your babes up? I should go and look after posting this.

Thanks Kanga for the lovely things you've said about my story. I don't think I would ever do anything as grand as publish them, as they are mainly ramblings of a nervous first timer, but it's really lovely to hear you think they are worth reading by a wider audience. And yes, DH is wonderful .

Corgi and Titmouse, are you still both hanging on? Titmouse, you're next for a HB too - good luck! Hope it goes a little quicker for you (and that your babies turn...)

Corgi - would not have got through my experience without the gas and air so it's a bit harsh to know that it's not even an option in Belgium!

A couple more pics on the profile (am a bit snap happy at the mo - ha!) and one of them is of me walking on the common today, taking the dog for a walk, and it was lovely to get outside and blow the cobwebs away!

Will keep an eye out on here for all the babies still to come!

Boobz, you're amazing! You look absolutely great (whereas I'm thinking "shattered" would be the only adjective to apply if I'd gone through your ordeal). Truly, I am inspired. What a lucky little girl Pen is to have joined the Boobzfamily.

No gas and air, indeed. But hey, they've got birthing balls and bathtubs -- almost as good, right?

titmouse · 24/03/2009 22:15

lizzie I hope you are feeling much better soon it sounds like it has knocked the stuffing out of you. Glad your DH is being so supportive.

corgi wow things are really quite different over in Belgium. gemzooks over on the HB thread has had different experiences again in Holand, I'd no idea that the options for basic care and also prevailing birthing culture was so different in other countries, fascinating.

boobz thank you yes I am currently next on the HB list [slightly scared emoticon]I am excited and nervous in equal proportions!

grinningbee · 25/03/2009 09:48

Is everyone off having babies?

CaptainKarvol · 25/03/2009 10:05

Have nicked the list from Boobz's last post so I can add in DD's name. Truely lovely reading all the birth stories, big, big congratulations all round. I'm all healed up, I think, though 'overdoing it' and still bleeding a lot, so am off to bed for a big rest as DD is busy kipping. What did I do to get a placid one this time? I keep thinking she is broken, she is SO unlike live-wire DS!

titmouse · 25/03/2009 11:14

hi grinningbee I am still here, eating swiss roll!

grinningbee · 25/03/2009 11:41

Hi Titmouse!

I was about to start singing "all by myself"

Mmmmmm swiss roll. Is it chocolate swiss roll or the jammy sort?

Tomorrow is supposed to be D day, but naff all happening, although (TMI!) I am getting increased discharge.

twocutedarlings · 25/03/2009 11:42

have baby in arms lol, but i am happy to join in with the cake eating!! .

corgikelly · 25/03/2009 11:44

Count me in for the singing and cake-eating (though on this end, it's U.S. Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies, just arrived as part of a care package from a friend!).

Am spending my time crawling around the flat on hands and knees in the hopes of getting Cletus to turn into the proper position. Life is very dull from this perspective -- how do dogs deal with it?

twocutedarlings · 25/03/2009 11:44

Is the discharge snot like grinningbee? (sorry i dont do TMI lol)

titmouse · 25/03/2009 11:49

it was apricot and buttercream and I would share but it's all gone Actually I bought it for my birthing team but they are clean out of luck, I blame the baby for not coming sooner!

grinningbee tomorrow is my D-day too, I don't even have discharge to show for it, lol. But last night I had an interesting pain that I haven't had before that was like my hip bones being pulled apart. would quite like some more of that but it was quite short lived!!

isn't it weird to actually WANT to be in pain??

corgi mint things sound great, I guess we all need to eat to keep our reserves up - you too, twocute cos you have a tiny one to look after!

grinningbee · 25/03/2009 11:55

Crawling on all fours while singing and eating cake sounds interesting Corgi!

Anyone can join in the cake eating if they want - I have scones here or can whip up lemon curd on toast... yum!

No, it isn't snot like, it's quite thick and white though (no itching so not anything icky) I got up off the sofa yesterday and had left a wet bit through my clothes good job it's leather....

I did lose my plug (such a nice term!) at 11 weeks, so there should be another I would have thought?

grinningbee · 25/03/2009 11:57

Ooooh, that pain sounds interesting. I know what you mean, normally wouldn't wish it on ourselves but it would be a sign of something happening.

That swiss roll sounds heavenly... I want one now!

corgikelly · 25/03/2009 12:09

"Is the discharge snot-like?"

"It was apricot and buttercream."

twocutedarlings · 25/03/2009 12:10

Yes the wet patch sounds very familiar lol , i think i had lots most control of my bladder at the end of this pg lol.

hey it was your bladder you were talking about LOL .

Well ive been going through my wardrobe this am, and have managed to fit into a pair of size 12 jeans not bad to say i was a 14 even before i was pg .

mamasmurf · 25/03/2009 12:25

Still her too 41weeks today. I was so fed up yesterday that couldn't even post. And gave up on everything pregnancy related. woke up at 5 and had regular surges until i lay down at 10.30. Now everthing has stopped. So a bit confused.

Did had a small pinky show which is something.

Have had the increased discharge thing for about a week so sounds like you are heading in the right directiongrinningbee.

Not sure what to do with kids i packed off to nannie's. i agree it's odd to want to bring back the pain .

Will eat some crisps and send DH for cake before makinf any big decisions.

grinningbee · 25/03/2009 12:29

Ah, maybe it's buttercream then and not something else!!!! Heehee.

I don't think I'm in need of the tena pants yet, just think things are a little more, urm, moist than before! Guess I should break out the pads.
