Congratulations to all those that have had their babies and poitive labour vibes going to those who are still waiting.
I can't belive Charlie is 3 weeks old todat, his due date isn't till next sat, it feels like he's been here forever and time is flying by.
Finally breastfeeding is going well after having cracked nipples, blocked milk ducts and then mastatis which was awful, I certainly do not want to feel like that again, but hopefully we have turned a corner now.
I have finally uploaded spme photos of Charlie.

Boobz · 16/03/2009 10:30

Awww, what a sweetheart Titchy! So cute!

Just to prove I wasn't exaggerating when I said I was huge, have uploaded latest bump picture onto profile. Hopefully the next picture I load up with be of an actual baby!

meep · 16/03/2009 11:09

impressive lack of stretchmarks Boobz (I just discovered mine under the bump )

Millie26 · 16/03/2009 11:21

Hi ladies!

Emma, I knew you'd had him! Congrats!
And to Wheely and the other new Mums.

I tried to update this on the Patientline thing in hospital but it wouldnt work so sorry for late update.

Baby Asta Mary was born last Tuesday night at 11.44pm by emergency c section weighing 8lbs 2oz.

Thought I'd put my birth story here has I love reading other people's Bit of a trauma - first baby so had no idea what to expect and she wasnt due until today.

I woke up at 4am on Tuesday with period type pain and BHs that didnt subside at all so I rang the hospital as I just felt that something was wrong.

They said to come in and DP drove us there where they hooked me up to a monitor. They said everyime I had a BH the baby's heartbeat went down so the cord might be round her but they thought it was probably ok for me to go home they would just do one more monitoring.

At about 4pm they said now the baby's heartbeat was too fast (base 170) and she was a bit distressed. I was given the option of an induction as at least the risks are known compared to just sending me home and waiting.

I said yes and refused pain relief as I was told induction takes about 24 hours and sometimes doesnt work at all.

Ha! 3 hours later, in AGONY. They gave me pethadine (might as well have torn up birth plan at this point) and then I felt so drunk and happy suddenly but then it all got a bit serious, although I dont really remember - poor DP, I think he wished he could have had some of that gas and air.

I was responding so so quickly to the induction (almost to the point where they wanted to take it out) that my waters suddenly went (very strange feeling)and the midwife who was checking to see if I was dilated said I went from 3 cm to 5 cm in about 3 seconds - but she could also feel a little face, not a head...

I hazily remember a midwife with an arm in me saying "I think it's a nose, or maybe a chin"

To cut an even longer story short, DP (and me but I was totally out it) was offered a c section as they said at 5ft I was going to struggle delivering a "good size" baby and that she would be born with a black and blue face with all the trauma of it. Half an hour later Asta arrived, unscathed. The cord had been wrapped round her and they said we had made the right decision.

I'm so glad I rang in!

Anyway, she is doing really well. Left hospital after 2 days and had constant family here which has been lovely but finally got some time just to ourselves today. I found bfeeding hard at first but now got the hang of it and amazing midwife gave us some excellent advice about winding and not eating onions or tomatoes which means we got some sleep last night whereas I went for three days - literally - without ANY sleep as we didnt realise she had tummy ache and just couldnt lie down to sleep.

We've named her after Astrid Lindgren (Asta is a shortening of Astrid) who wrote the Pippi Longstocking stories in Sweden - my Mum is Swedish and I really wanted something to keep the link going

Will keep coming back on here to see how everyone else is doing - so many more babies to go - so exciting!

xxx

titmouse · 16/03/2009 11:40

congratulations mille what a gorgeous name, I love the name Astrid and I remember Pippi Longstocking very well!

thanks for sharing your birthing story, I've not heard of a baby coming out face first.

Hedgewitch glad you've had your show, good luck!

MKG must be with her new little one, she hasn't been around for a few pages.

corgikelly · 16/03/2009 11:57

Congrats millie - I do so wish gas & air was available in Belgium! I can't imagine getting through that kind of scary situation without a bit of chemical assistance.

boobz, in addition to no stretch marks, you still have an innie! My belly button looks like half a wine cork at this point and I'm just praying it will go back in post-birth...

titmouse · 16/03/2009 12:48

just on my way to the labour ward, possible hind water leak - actually happened on friday but I didn't do anything cos I thought a baby would follow I'm also losing bits of mucous plug and had possible contractions last evening and in the night. I'm sure it adds up to nowt and they will tell me I weed myself or something but off I go anyway.
Hoping it really is nothing as I was looking forward to HB

Wheelybug · 16/03/2009 14:09

Good luck Titmouse and Hedgewitch.

HOnestly Madigan and Meep - One of the reasons I didn't want an elective c-sec was because I didn't think I'd be able to cope with the anticipation of the surgery especially the spinal despite having one before but I hadn't been entirely with it when I'd had the emergency.

As I said, I was in a little bit of a state beforehand but I had to have a blood test, cannula put in and the spinal and I promise that the spinal was the least painful of the 3. In fact, the blood test was the worst for some reason (the bodged attempt by the MW to put the cannula in wasn't entirely pleasant but the anaesthetist did it in about 5 seconds and I didn't feel a thing).

lilymolly · 16/03/2009 14:11

Oh good luck titmouse

Very

titmouse · 16/03/2009 16:02

thanks wheely and lillymolly - I am back, no leakage, cervix still closed so either it was wee or very, very watery discharge still at least I know now and I am going to be ok to give birth at home. I was having contractions during monitoring and I do think my body is preparing, but no real signs yet.

I felt silly for going up there again but never mind!

jollyjoanne · 16/03/2009 19:03

Congratulations to yet more new mums. I love hearing all the stories of the births, everyone seems to be doing so well.

Mae also does the strange shivery thing even though she isn't cold, the midwife told us it was nothing to worry about.

My sister got married yesterday, so the whole extended family got to meet Mae, and grandad barely put her down - he was so proud. Not sure but she may have even outshone the bride - not that I'd tell my sister that!

Starting to get some feeling back in the lower half now - and can report that a week on the stitches from the cut don't feel to bad, not had to go through too many paracetamol.

And good luck to those who have babies on the way.

BumblBeee · 16/03/2009 19:41

I was thinking of Violet as a name recently also! I do believe there is a Jungian collective unconscious at work in these matters!

I may have an elective c on 23/3 due to my age and previous c-section but still debating whether to go ahead as baby seems fine in scans so far.

Hope everyone is well out there! xxx

BumblBeee · 16/03/2009 19:46

"the bodged attempt by the MW to put the cannula in wasn't entirely pleasant but the anaesthetist did it in about 5 seconds and I didn't feel a thing"

Ha - the same thing happened with me last time!

I asked her to take it out about 5 times, my hande swelled up like a balloon..

Madigan · 16/03/2009 20:53

Congratualations Millie! Good luck Titmouse and PHW ....... hope to read your good news here soon.
Wheelybug - thank you for reassurance re spinal ......... I am now thinking that if others can endure labour and natural childbirth without pain relief, then I can bloody well cope with the fleeting pain of a spinal!!! So telling myself not to be such a wimp............. sure I will be fine once I am in there, and all excited about seeing baby! Meep ........ we can do this!!

I still have it in my mind that baby may come early, and that I may go into labour before Friday, but maybe that is just wishful thinking (although not sure why I would want that to happen, since I am not really that enthusiastic about experiencing labour - sorry if that makes me sound a bit weird ).

Have finally packed hospital bags properly today and got all nursery totally sorted ... major nesting going on here .... so I am now feeling ready!!

anyone else still have a lot of heartburn - especially at night? It is waking me up ..... (as well as the loo trips, the PSD etc etc) .... apart from Gaviscon, what else can I do? Not getting enough sleep by a long way ...

corgikelly · 16/03/2009 21:55

As someone who's MORE than happy to wait for her due date (the closer it gets, the more I wonder what on earth I'm getting myself into! ), tonight I've got a very uneasy feeling that I'll be in labour within the next few days. BH contractions seem to be happening more and more often, and my breasts have just started leaking a tiny bit.

Gulp.

I know all the folk tricks to bringing on labour, but how do you stave it off? I went to the market today and avoided making eye contact with pineapples...

Yarnie · 16/03/2009 22:01

Madigan we're due date buddies! Except I don't think my Pipsqueak is going to come early. I've barely had a noticeable BH and feel quite "normal". I just thought I'd pipe up that I have also been suffering from heartburn and Ranitidine (Zantac) has worked excellently for me (you can get the cheap, generic variety in Boots, Superdrug, etc). The leaflet has a warning for pregnant and breastfeeding women to check with their doctors, but my doctor said it is what she would prescribe. Apparently it is a very safe drug from a foetal risk point of view, but do consult with your doctor if you want reassurance.

Madigan · 16/03/2009 23:04

Thanks Yarnie - will get some tomorrow, as am fairly desparate amnd Gaviscon not working .............
well, we don't have long to go - only 4 more nights (definitely for me, as have c-s on Friday) - but guess you may be a bit longer if you go over.... is this your first DC?

Boobz · 17/03/2009 07:42

DH and I put the pool up last night, so we're good to go! I have the funniest picture of him doing it though, as he decided to put it up having had a shower which he hadn't got dressed from, so it was essentially naked Pool in a Box assembly time, which amused me, dog and cat who watched with interested as this spectacle took place. He also got a crunching black eye from playing rugby at the weekend, so when I asked him to look up at the camera (all naughty bits hidden by arms, legs and pool) he's got this classic face on him with a expression. I wonder if it's politic to put it on my profile or whether he'd kill me ha ha. Might send me into labour I was laughing at it so much last night.

And wouldn't that be nice - a St Patrick's Day baby!

House is a tip now though, so I need to at least clean it up and mop kitchen floor before I can properly start having this baby (and my MW has to come back on duty) so I've got a good few hours of staving this process off yet.

Nothing else to report. Where the heck is MKG?

Boobz · 17/03/2009 08:29

Have put DH pool-assembly-in-the-buff photo up for a limited time only. He looks like a right bruiser with that v. short hair cut (was shorter than he asked for!) and that black eye. Bless him. He's just asked me to buy some candles and an oil burner with some lavender oil to set the mood for the birth. Sweetheart!

corgikelly · 17/03/2009 08:39

Boobz, that picture is a scream!

It reminds me of our visit to the maternity ward last week as we were touring the natural birth room, which has a birth pool, the midwife said that partners were welcome to be in the pool as well, but "please, please do bring swim trunks. We're all medical professionals here, but we're just more used to naked women rather than men!"

I asked DP if he'd like to be in there with me -- he's a bit of a shy fellow and he literally went white at the very thought.

lilymolly · 17/03/2009 08:49

@ Boobz dh

Due date today so COME ON BABY TIME TO COME OUT!!!!!!!

meep · 17/03/2009 08:59

boobz your dh will kill you for putting that pic up - made me laugh though!

corgi my friend's dh got in the pool with her - he wasn't offered a shower afterwards .........and she'd had a curry the night before - eurgh!

And don't worry about not feeling ready for labour. With dd I was the only one in my NCT group who wanted to be late! But once it starts there is no going back and the end result is truly amazing!

Madigan - don't eat cheese in the evening and stick to small meals! Also Gaviscon staight after your tea - and 4 x 5ml spoons just before bed. That is the only thing that stops my heartburn. Oh and not too much to drink before bed either! And I keep a bottle beside me at night for a midnight drink if I need it (in fact the chemist asked if I wanted a spoon when I picked up my last prescription for an industrial sized bottle - then looked at me and said "you'll be drinking it straight from the bottle won't you" - oh yes!)

titmouse don't feel silly - always best to check at this stage!

wheely forgot about the cannula - ouch!

meep · 17/03/2009 09:00

oh and come on babylilymolly - don't you know that it is time to come out!

Congrats Fearless!

Well is anyone else overdue now and fed up about it? Today is 40+6, I've tried the walks, curry and pineapple with no success and now having finished all the sex & city box sets am running out of things to do with my time!
