Hi ladies!
Emma, I knew you'd had him! Congrats!
And to Wheely and the other new Mums.
I tried to update this on the Patientline thing in hospital but it wouldnt work so sorry for late update.
Baby Asta Mary was born last Tuesday night at 11.44pm by emergency c section weighing 8lbs 2oz.
Thought I'd put my birth story here has I love reading other people's Bit of a trauma - first baby so had no idea what to expect and she wasnt due until today.
I woke up at 4am on Tuesday with period type pain and BHs that didnt subside at all so I rang the hospital as I just felt that something was wrong.
They said to come in and DP drove us there where they hooked me up to a monitor. They said everyime I had a BH the baby's heartbeat went down so the cord might be round her but they thought it was probably ok for me to go home they would just do one more monitoring.
At about 4pm they said now the baby's heartbeat was too fast (base 170) and she was a bit distressed. I was given the option of an induction as at least the risks are known compared to just sending me home and waiting.
I said yes and refused pain relief as I was told induction takes about 24 hours and sometimes doesnt work at all.
Ha! 3 hours later, in AGONY. They gave me pethadine (might as well have torn up birth plan at this point) and then I felt so drunk and happy suddenly but then it all got a bit serious, although I dont really remember - poor DP, I think he wished he could have had some of that gas and air.
I was responding so so quickly to the induction (almost to the point where they wanted to take it out) that my waters suddenly went (very strange feeling)and the midwife who was checking to see if I was dilated said I went from 3 cm to 5 cm in about 3 seconds - but she could also feel a little face, not a head...
I hazily remember a midwife with an arm in me saying "I think it's a nose, or maybe a chin"
To cut an even longer story short, DP (and me but I was totally out it) was offered a c section as they said at 5ft I was going to struggle delivering a "good size" baby and that she would be born with a black and blue face with all the trauma of it. Half an hour later Asta arrived, unscathed. The cord had been wrapped round her and they said we had made the right decision.
I'm so glad I rang in!
Anyway, she is doing really well. Left hospital after 2 days and had constant family here which has been lovely but finally got some time just to ourselves today. I found bfeeding hard at first but now got the hang of it and amazing midwife gave us some excellent advice about winding and not eating onions or tomatoes which means we got some sleep last night whereas I went for three days - literally - without ANY sleep as we didnt realise she had tummy ache and just couldnt lie down to sleep.
We've named her after Astrid Lindgren (Asta is a shortening of Astrid) who wrote the Pippi Longstocking stories in Sweden - my Mum is Swedish and I really wanted something to keep the link going
Will keep coming back on here to see how everyone else is doing - so many more babies to go - so exciting!
