Had 4 sweeps with DD2 and the last one started things finally so not always effective esp if cervix not ripe apparently.

fatandfedup · 25/02/2009 18:29

Oh, and they were all really uncomfortable!

LuLuBai · 25/02/2009 18:39

I refused sweeps with DD. My thinking on them is that they are nearly always performed on women who are 40+ weeks pg who are v.v.close to starting labour anyway so where is the evidence that it was the sweep that started the labour. I did look into it last time at it all seemed to be 'anecdotal' rather than evidence based.

And anyway I thought curry and sex seemed more fun!

Bicnod · 25/02/2009 19:15

omigod - I saw a video of a lady giving birth today

had my first NCT class this morning (not the most convenient time of day when you're still working full time!) and they showed us a video of a lady giving birth in water. it was actually quite unscary and she seemed very in control. the only thing that freaked me out was the amount of time it took between her pushing the head out and the rest of the baby coming out - it seemed like aaaaages... is that normal?

hello everyone by the way - sorry to plunge in but feeling a bit eek

PuzzleRocks · 25/02/2009 19:24

What would you consider ages?

OP posts:
SmuttyNuttyTaff · 25/02/2009 19:33

BB it would indeed be a bargaining TOOL lol

smutt? what smutt?

Bicnod - my experience was that the head took ages and the body was quite quick after (everyone is different though as is every labour )

LuLuBai · 25/02/2009 19:37

I would say the body definitely felt quick once the head was out of the way but really I have no idea of time scales. Once she started crowning I think it was only about 3 contractions or so before she was out. It was the 23 hours before then that felt like aaaaages.

conkertree · 25/02/2009 20:01

I actually have no recollection of when the head came out and when the rest did - all I remember was when the full body came out I remember thinking it was just like a little seal flopping into the water from an iceberg.

and bb - why not use both? imo - rabbit + dh is the best combination - obviously with dh doing the full deed and the bunny ears just helping - not both in there at once .

one half day left at work. and then i'm a lady of leisure - yeh right. a lady of leisure with a very active 18month old - but going for a lovely lunch tomorrow with dh and ds and then my sister is having ds overnight so hopefully will get a full night's sleep for once.

PuzzleRocks · 25/02/2009 20:24

Conker - That sounds like a lovely day.

Lulu - I fully dilated in no time at all but once DD starting crowning it was another 90 minutes before the midwife decided perhaps she should offer me an episiotomy. It still took a further 20 minutes to get her out. She had both hands up by her cheeks. Needless to say she had a spectacular cone head for the first couple of days with all that to'ing and fro'ing.

PuzzleRocks · 25/02/2009 20:52

Come baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

OP posts:
LuLuBai · 25/02/2009 20:54

Ooooooh ouch Puzzle. A couple of friends' babies have had their hands by their cheeks and it hasn't been good. One was scratched quite badly by his nails, the other suffered far worse and has been told to 'complete her family' before they start work on 'reconstruction'....

Anyhoooo -moving swiftly on! (And to all first timers I gather this is unusual!)

Conker - have a wonderful day tomorrow as you start your leisure / quality time with DH & DS.

LuLuBai · 25/02/2009 20:58

Puzzle - just looking at your list of elusive April mums. What happened to EsmeWeatherwax? Wasn't she an April mum to begin with? I have seen her popping up on the naming forums quite a lot.

I know Sarahmum is out there cos I saw she started a thread in the pregnancy topics recently about having another baby after a 10 year gap.

And hope all OK with Auld. She was quite a regular poster until recently.

SpringySunshine · 25/02/2009 20:59

'RECONSTRUCTION'? Nooo! I did not sign up for this! I did not sign up for this at all! No! Send it back, I don't want it anymore!

conkertree · 25/02/2009 21:05

I'm going to pretend I didnt read that post lulubai - have convinced myself that second births are always easier and refuse to think about other possible outcomes.

i was wondering about auldalliance too - hope things are ok.

puzzle - i always seem to be on when not many others are around too. trying not to take it personally .

booked a cottage in the south of france for a week in september today so trying to weigh up the pros and cons of travelling by plane versus car now with two little ones. so many extras if we fly - car hire, car seats, etc etc but if we drive - looong journeys with little people. could break up the journey but dont want to spend too many days getting there and back or wont feel much like a holiday. driving through the night might be the way forward.

PuzzleRocks · 25/02/2009 21:06

Ow Lulu, I feel quite lucky after reading that. I had an episio and the stitches didn't dissolve for ages but she did a good job and there is barely a scar now so no permsnent damage thank heavens.

OP posts:
conkertree · 25/02/2009 21:08

i had the same but must admit i've been a little reluctant to look too carefully at the end result incase i feel self conscious with dh or anything - imagine mathsmummy would find that odd being an inquisitive type, but there are some things i'd rather not know.

feels fine so assume its all fine.

mathsmummy27 · 25/02/2009 21:10

evening ladies, just back from aqua natal. lots of bouncing around and the baby's head is even lower now....

PuzzleRocks · 25/02/2009 21:10

Ooh South of France. Nice.

OP posts:
mathsmummy27 · 25/02/2009 21:12

taking my name in vain?

I haven't really looked - a bit tricky - but I was fascinated by the whole healing process, weird for me because everything was tighter after the baby due to the way it healed.

LuLuBai · 25/02/2009 21:12

Oh good Puzzle. Glad you came out of it relatively unscathed!

Conker SoF sounds lovely. Not sure what to suggest really. May be best to wait and see what the new baby is like in cars before making a call.

I know plane travel with small people is not enormous fun, but at least it is over quickly. On the other hand it is much easier to pack a car with all the things you may or may not need and to stop when you need.

You could make the drive part of the holiday by planning in a few places to visit on the way.

PuzzleRocks · 25/02/2009 21:14

Right, Masterchef calls. Speak tomorrow lovelies.

OP posts:
conkertree · 25/02/2009 21:15

yup may end up doing that lulu and just trying to get the bulk of the driving done either early morning or later at night and have the days free. will be great anyway.

mathsmummy - i really fancy aquanatal but no classes at times i can manage round here. would love to feel i was doing some sort of exercise though.

LuLuBai · 25/02/2009 21:15

Yes Mathsmummy I found everything tighter afterwards too. I wasn't sure if she had taken up a bit of errr slack with the stitches or if there was something else that caused it. I find nooky has been enhanced and intensified since childbirth!
