Hello all

Just got back from 2 days in Edinburgh, combination wedding anniversary/my birthday couple of days without the DD's, who went to Granny's.

It was lovely, but I found I was so exhausted so quickly, I actually burst into tears in the street on the way to the hotel yesterday , as I was so tired after a full day of walking round Edinburgh. This was after a ridiculous row with DH about coats. I haven't bothered with a maternity coat and I was warm yesterday so didn't bother wearing my normal coat. He got obsessed about me needing a coat, we had a big row 'cos I don't want one, it was like being with my mum. I reverted to sullen teen mode

However on the plus side, I ate an enormous cupcake with bright green icing in the greedy way only a pregnant woman can, to the horror (jealousy?) of some glamorous twigs perched on their bony bottoms nearby and was bought 2 lovely bras from Boudiche (God, what a lovely shop) - have been wearing 38DD but turns out I'm 36F (the whole shop must have heard me wail 'an F? You're kidding', DH certainly did, he doesn't mind an 'f' cup.

And as much as I love DH and he is almost perfect, he still expected sex last night as we were away. Bloody men........

Still haven't bought a pushchair, any baby clothes, nappies (haven't even properly looked into all the different reusables)......

Belgianchocolates · 21/02/2009 19:02

chocolatebunnies It was Fi who had the natal hypnotherapy hypnotherapy CD on offer. eBay is otherwise a great place to look. A lot of people seem to buy them only to download them onto their ipod. I haven't got one of those and am still using my good oldfashioned portable CD player. I paid about £11 postage inclusive on eBaby, they're £16 + postage via Natal Hypnotherapy's own website.

RE: nursing tops: I BF 2 dcs, 1 for 19 months and 1 for 2y and have never needed one of those. If you just wear a normal T-shirt there's nothing to see anyway. Baby covers your tummy and your t-shirt covers your top. I remember having a conversation with my dh while bf my ds and he never even caught on ds was feeding until later when he asked when ds was due his feed! What I am looking for is a breastfeeding dress, because I like my summer dresses and breastfeeding in dresses is impossible, I found these and these. I like them, because they don't have this noticeable flap at the front that advertises that you're breastfeeding, IYKWIM.

Anyway, I'm celebrating today. I just finished my very last shift. They gave me a whole bunch of leaving presents, vests and baby grows, mittens, cute booties, hats, a baby towel and a baby shawl and most importantly: a big box of chocolates. It felt really strange to leave the place and know I wont be back there for nearly a year. But it's nice to know I can finally let my poor pelvis get a rest. The last couple of weeks I had (more) heavily pregnant women saying 'let me carry that or pick that up', which is a bit odd, I'm supposed to be the caring one !

FiKelly · 21/02/2009 19:07

chocolatebunnies it's me that has the natal hypnotherapy home birth cd. It's actually a friends but she popped it in the bag of maternity clothes she returned to me as she wasn't using it for the moment. It's your to borrow if you would like it but it doesn't have the info booklet with it... just the cd. send me an email with your address if you'd like to try it... [email protected] and i'll pop it in the post. fi x

dh desperate for laptop so will be back on in a bit

FiKelly · 21/02/2009 19:08

hee hee crossed posts with belgian

chocolatebunnies · 21/02/2009 19:13

OOoooo Fi YOU ARE A STAR!

Will email you now!

Belgianchocolates · 21/02/2009 19:25

By the way. I'm planning a homebirth chocolatebunnies and I think a few more of us are too, but can't remember who. I've bought Helly Baby for my dcs to prepare them for what's coming. It's a lovely picture book about a little boy who witnesses the hb of his little brother. It's very matter of fact and tells things how they are without making them scary. My dd especially loves it, my ds is possibly a bit too old for it.

Belgianchocolates · 21/02/2009 19:27

The book's called Hello Baby, not Helly Baby , the latter makes it look like the baby's arrived by helicopter

chocolatebunnies · 21/02/2009 19:59

What age is the book aimed at Belgian my dd will be 2.8 when the baby arrives, she may be a bit too young for it? She knows theres a baby in my tummy and knows its not ready to come out yet, she has also named it Snoopy (don't ask!)

Helicopter mite be easier!lol!

When you say "planning a homebirth" what does that actually mean? I've kinda just decided thats what Im going to do, what do I need to do in preparation??

I had a look on homebirth.org.uk and they've got loads of info, but it looks like it hasn't been updated since 2004 so I don't know if thats all still correct?

Quiet night for me tonight, DP is off out with his mates!

FiKelly · 21/02/2009 20:16

chocolatebunnies i planned a home birth last time... but didn't end up with us being able to have one. Basically your midwife will bring the basic kit they need round to your home at about 38wks so it is ready for them. You could probably do with some other things too... and the main one is to decide where in the house you want to have the baby and plan accordingly... eg cheapo shower curtains to protect carpet etc from mess/stain or a birthing pool if you fancy a home water birth the home birth .org site is a good one... and their 'shopping list' is a good place to start

Did you get my email Fi ?

What kind of pain relief is avaliable for Homebirthers? Or does it depend entirely on which NHS Trust your with??

What is in the basic kit???

FiKelly · 21/02/2009 20:22

oh and possibly n angle poise lamp so your mw can check your perineum area and a portable heater if your rooms are a bit chilly... newborn LO and you might be a bit sensitive to cold after the birth...

evening all,

re. nursing tops, i am the only person I know who wore these- that includes friends with babies and mums at baby groups. But i don't think i could have BF in public without them as I would find it hard to lift my top and find my boob to latch baby on. Maybe its something you get good at with practice, but i prefered the nursing tops. I would find myself walking around the house with the poppers open though , and in public sometimes it was hard to do them up once i'd finished but not all of them have poppers.

chocolatebunnies · 21/02/2009 20:29

dandy please could you add me to the list whilst your trimming please?

im due 22 May and have a dd who is 2

thank u!

pulapula · 21/02/2009 20:31

Dandy - I think a trim is a good idea and something i was thinking myself but wasn't brave enough to suggest!

FiKelly · 21/02/2009 20:32

chocolatebunnies just checked email and yes i'm off to the post office on monday with a job lot of DH's books that have just sold on ebay so i'll post it then.

As to what the mw brings in her kit... oooo going back 2.5yrs for me to remember! I remember there being a gas and air canister & mouth piece, a plastic carry box with assorted items i can't remember (except i do remember the cord cutter) and a medicine of some kind that had to be kept in the fridge... my mw did go through all the items back then! belgian will be able to remind me If you want a pos of pethidine it has to be collected by the mw from the hospital... on the day when everything kicks off i think.

Belgianchocolates · 21/02/2009 20:36

chocolatebunnies That book is definitely aimed as little ones and I think your lo will enjoy it. I bought it because quite a few people on the homebirth thread advised it. The main character is a 4yo, so it really is aimed at pre-choolers.
I suppose I said planning a homebirth, because that's the way people say it. By planning I suppose I mean I informed the cmw, will make all the arrangements closer to the date to have all things ready at home for the birth, but the cmw will go through what I need to get and what she'll bring, so I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. In terms of pain relief available, it does depend on teh trust a little. All trusts provide portable Gas and air and some trusts will allow you to have pethidine providing that you get it prescribed by the GP and that you keep it at home yourself. It is too dangerous nowadays for CMWs to carry around such controled drugs, people have been attacked for it in the past.

I'm a bit worried about my ds. When we undressed him this evening he was covered in this rash, it's quite pale on his body, but very angry red and itchy on his arms. He's otherwise OK, but the rash feels hot and just looks bad. He's got no temp and feels well. I phoned NHS direct and they said they'd phone back in an hour, so I wonder what they'll say. I hope the rash doesn't get that angry and red all over. I looked in my 'when your child is ill' book to see if I can see a picture of his rash and it looks like the rubella one, except that rubella isn't itchy and his temp is normal. They also said to give him calpol, but calpol for itchiness sounds a bit odd. I did it anyway, but I'm a bit about that. Hopefully it will go... It's not bad enough for me to jump in the car and take him to A&E, but I'd still like some sort of explanation.

daizydoo · 21/02/2009 20:37

Oh my I'm tired! I read the last post 1st and wondered what Dandy was trimming !!

I'm absolutely shattered after cleaning the house yesterday (I managed to do my back in, in the process!) Today was ds's 2nd bday party, which was good fun. At least he didn't cry when we sang Happy Birthday, like he did on his bday!

I never used a nursing top. I used to use a bump band under my tops, which covered the flabby belly!

FiKelly · 21/02/2009 20:38

divedaisy thanks for doing the list & dandy i agree with the trimming it down too.

I'm going to buy a few nursing tops if i'm successful this time as i have such huge norks (currently a K cup and hoping not to expand much more) last time i had to lift my tops up a huge amount to get a good view of where the baby is in relation to my nipples. At least with a discreet opening i can just whip out the required bit rather than flash an indecent amount of flesh

Belgianchocolates · 21/02/2009 20:40

Fi that medicine that was kept in the fridge would have been syntometrine, the injection that's given to help your placenta come away earlier.

I find it a good idea to trim the list a bit, it's nearly a whole webpage long!

FiKelly · 21/02/2009 20:47

I've created the new thread for when we run out of room here... as everyone liked the hot hot hot went with that we've still some room here to chat before we need to pop over though...

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_clubs/708913-Due-May-2009-There-39-s-a-bun-in-my?rnd=1235249141818

divedaisy · 21/02/2009 20:50

Hi Gals! You lot have been busy! If I hadnt popped in tonite it's probable you'd all be off on a new thread...!!!

Welcome Hypatia - I love the fact that someone recommended you to us because we're 'intelligent literate people'!!!! Wow! What a recommendation and compliment. (Just wait till you get to know us LOL!!)

Jael - glad you've moved house successfully! I know a BIT about what youve had to do. I have spent the last 3 days moving our shop with DH. And I am absolutely knackered. I cannot wait to get to bed after Casulty. Oh and good news on your blue boy!!

minimenace - I;ve been getting pains low down too, but I haven't had a c/s. I think mine is due to spd. I've been really bothered with pains over the last few days, but that;s because I KNOW I have done too much...

LoobyLou - I can't believe how organised you are with your bulk cooking!!!! I know where to go to in May, June, July... do you take on line orders??? I can hardly think of what to cook for daily meals, never mind doing what you do!! I am seriously impressed! My organisation equates to bread and tinned baked beans, some eggs....

pulapula - I think every mum worries about cot death. For ds my mum bought me an angel baby monitor which comes with a sensor plate that goes under the matress. It monitors breathing, sounds and movement and will alarm if it doesn't sense these! Mine worked - durning the night when lifting him, I'd often forget to turn it off and about 30 secs later (usually when settled for a bf) the thing would give a warning bleep, and then a few secs later the alarm would go off!!!

chocolatefrog - I too had PND and told everyone (GP, MW etc) about my history of it at the beginning of this preg. My GP referred me back to my psychotherapist who spoke to me and reassured me that if it reappears I'd be treated urgently; and I have also been referred to the community Mental Healthe dept in the health centre. I feel good at the minute, but I think a lot is to do with the reassurance I feel that I am being looked after. Being on the NHS shouldn't affect the level of councelling you receive. Feel free to off-load here.

regarding the chat about dolicocephalic heads - I had a very vivid dream that I literally squatted at home on my turkish rug and gave birth - and my baby had a head shaped like an alien cone head!!!!

Sorry about the long post - but you lot chat too much!!!

detsy · 21/02/2009 20:55

Hi "Belgian" is it chickenpox hun? I know that starts as red, itchy rash before they get blistery and I also think it can start on the arms. Also kids don't feel unwell with it when they are little. Just athought anyway but I'm sure you'd crossed it off your list already!!

divedaisy · 21/02/2009 20:55

I've added chocolatebunnies - and agree with the trimming of this list!!!! I didn't want to upset anyone by removing them earlier. So Dandy - let the trimming begin!! Just dont drop MrsG off - she keeps getting left off (probably by me...)
