Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
HtheH · 25/11/2008 13:51

Hello everyone. I hope you don't mind me joining your thread. WOuld love the support and advice. I have had 2 previous miscarriages - the last one in May, so I am a nervous pregnant lady! I have bought myself a doppler, which I find very reassuring, hear the heartbeat when I want and it ranges 140-150, what could this mean?! I am due 16th May so heading towards 16 weeks, is it normal not to have a proper bump yet? I have definitely put on weight and have a rounder, bloated stomach. I am wearing maternity jeans, purely for comfort! But everything else still fits.
I am such a worrier and paranoid about everything. I have scan on 31st Dec and am looking forward to finding out what the baby is and seeing it again. I also had an accident the other day that has made me even more paranoid! I dropped a mercury thermometer which smashed everywhere. I know that mercury vapours are highly toxic and very dangerous for fetuses. I left the room and my husband cleared it up, but I am still so worried about possibly harming the baby. Does anyone know how dangerous the amount of mercury in a thermometer really is and do you think I should be worried? I spoke to a midwife and she didn't seem overly concerned - why don't I find this reassuring!
I am a nightmare and driving my husband bonkers. I am normally such a sane and rational person, but this has turned me mad! I am so so happy, but so so terrified of something awful happening and losing another baby. Arghhh!!! Sorry everyone for such a long and whingeing post, but feels good to let off steam.
I am loving Salt and Vinegar crisps at the moment and mini poppadoms! Can't get enough of them...

pulapula · 25/11/2008 13:54

Jael,

If i only needed a light single pushchair I would go for a (second-hand) quinny buzz or bugaboo.

But I need a double really (have 3 singles already so can't justify another), so I will be getting my P&T soon. My friend has ordered her new P&T which will arrive in the next 2 days so once she's decided to keep it, I can buy her old one off her! I'm so excited- I might even test it out on my DD (3.11) and DS (1.5) so that if I can push it with them in it now, I know it should be fine for the future for DS and new baby.

Momino · 25/11/2008 14:46

HtheH, welcome to the (mostly) S&V lovers thread! congrats on the pregnancy.
Jael, so sorry to hear you're low. Try not to read too much more about your condition as you may not progress like the others you read about. Do wait for the consultant.
about shopping online, we got our P&T online (ebay) but had done a lot of research and got other opionions before buying so we felt confident to buy without trying.

also, are you american/Canadian? (notice you say 'Mom'). just interested because i'm from Ohio and am homesick this week.

hope everyone's ok today.

SpangleMaker · 25/11/2008 14:50

Jael sorry to hear you're feeling down As pulapula says, it's not too early to buy things if that's what's best for you, especially if you have space to store. I'd offer to help you out but our house is full up of dh's crap stuff as it is. I am planning to have a massive clearout after Christmas.

I'm not planning to get anything yet because of the space issue & because we're wondering if BIL/SIL will offer us any hand-me-downs when we tell them. I'm just doing browsing online at the moment.

HtheH welcome you'll find we're a chatty bunch! Don't worry about the thermometer. Mercury isn't volatile (it's boiling pt is over 300C) so it's extremely, extremely unlikely you inhaled any vapour. Provided you minimised any skin contact there is no problem at all. Just think, plenty of people have dental work done with amalgam before they know they're pregnant and they are fine. Try not to worry, though it's easier said than done, I know.

SweetBROODY · 25/11/2008 14:50

HtheH Welcome to the club! All this talk of buggy's is exciting... No-one has offered us anything yet... :S I think becuase I miscarried in May. Much more positive news this time from all my scans and stuff so I cant help getting excited by all this choice!

Do most of them come with car seats?

I am a first timer as well and have no idea what I am going to need!

SpangleMaker · 25/11/2008 15:08

OK I stand corrected about mercury, it is rather volatile. The info I just found says you should do exactly as you did, leave the room and get someone else to clear it up carefully. Unfortunately it does say if the spill was on carpet, the carpet should be cut out because tiny droplets can remain in the fibres; cleaning with a vacuum is not recommended as it may contaminate the cleaner and dissipate vapour. All the stuff used to clean up the spill should be put in a plastic bag, labelled 'mercury waste' and taken to a household waste site for safe disposal.

If you are worried, you could open the windows to ventilate the room which should get rid of any vapour.

If your midwife isn't worried then I'm sure it's absolutely fine. But it's best to take whatever precautions you can for reassurance sake.

HtheH · 25/11/2008 15:13

Sweetbroody have you found it hard to believe that this pregnancy is going to turn out alright? I really want to get happy and excited, but feel it may be tempting fate? I really need to chill out!
Anyone else get really uncomfortable in bed? Have just ordered a maternity pillow thing which I hope will help. If anyone has any tips on how to relax and let myself get excited I would be very grateful.

SweetBROODY · 25/11/2008 15:20

HtheH totally finding it hard - also finding it hard to beleive I am pregnant. Especially as i'm still not showing! (13+4weeks)

Try to listen to music and try and get a pregnancy massage..

you have to be positive...

SweetBROODY · 25/11/2008 15:22

Hey i've gone of salt and vinegar crips! Normally my absolute fav! But then DH doesnt like them so maybe bay doesnt?

MsG · 25/11/2008 15:39

Hiya HtheH, congrats! I had a mc last summer and am a worrier anyway, so you're not the only one. I was worried cos we'd been decorating the house before I found out I was pregnant and I had a slight panic about the paints...but it doesn't take much to set me off. Have you tried yoga or meditation? I am going to try yoga when I can get to a class. I've started going swimming too which I find relaxing.

I would worry about the mercury but you did the right thing and your midwife isn't concerned so try not to worry. As SpangleMaker said, loads of people have fillings etc and are fine.

Sweetbroody, have you had a pregnancy massage yet? I want one! Have found one at this lovely looking place in my town but it's £65 - think it might be worth treating myself to though... xx

Jael · 25/11/2008 15:44

Hiya, me and DD just watched a film together, snuggled up on the sofa made us feel better.

No I'm not American/Canadian. I've always referred to myself as Mom, I call my Mom, Mom too. DD calls me Mom or Momma lol don't know where she's got Momma from, she sounds really old fashioned when she says it.

No-one has offered us anything either, don't think they will. We ended up selling/giving away most of DD baby thing's as we just did not have room, and at the time we needed all the extra money.
Means it's going to be really hard for us this time, as I haven't been working I won't get any maternity pay, so we'll be relying all on DP wage, and we have tons to buy. Pushchair/carseat/moses basket/baby bath etc. The only things we have are baby moniter and highchair. Were gonna get DD a new bed and use her cot/bed for the baby.

Jael X

SweetBROODY · 25/11/2008 15:47

MsG I havent done not yet.. but £65 is not bad if they are a pro at pregnancy massage... its almost Xmas! Treat yourself!

Jael Awwwww i'm sorry things are so tough... it will be worth it in the ned you know..

runningmonkey · 25/11/2008 16:04

Jael I've had a look at that folder I mentioned earlier, this is the online version. It might be helpful re maternity benefits. look at this page

Re pushchairs, we were thinking of this one, esp since it includes a car seat as well. Need to see what reviews there are out there first.

HtheH welcome!

Momino happy thanksgiving! (it is this week isn't it?)

llareggub · 25/11/2008 16:13

Jael are you in Brum by any chance? Lots of Brummies use Mom, I've found. I'm a fellow Midlander too.

Momino · 25/11/2008 16:22

Jael, have you heard of NCT nearly new sales in your area? Look at the NCT website to see if there is one in your area. We got our moses basket and stand there for £10 and loads of other things really cheaply. I think they're held every few months. btw, i think Mom is cute. but dd's call me mummy. I still call my mother Mom though!

runningmonkey, thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes. It's Thursday but we're celebrating it on Sunday since it's not a bank holiday here. Have got the turkey ordered and ready to do a rehearsal of Christmas Dinner. someone here had mentioned Sprouts and now can think of nothing else but sprouts and gravy....mmmmm!

Jael · 25/11/2008 16:28

Oh my gosh runningmonkey that's the pushchair we had for DD, weve still got it, I'm waiting to rehome it lol if you didn't mind second hand we could sort something out. You don't have to of course. It was a lovely pushchair/pram but I just found it too big, I don't drive, so I had to get it on buses etc and by myself it was hard, especially after having a c-section. We used it when DP was pushing, so I didn't have to strain myself. Was lovely to have DD facing us, and she loved it too.

runningmonkey · 25/11/2008 16:30

Ooh, you just made me really hungry Will make something with gravy tonight I think.

divedaisy · 25/11/2008 16:30

Welcome HtheH - is this your first pregnancy? Also SweetBROODY - when I was pregnant with my DS I found it totally unbelievable - I think the enormity and sheer miracle of what was happening was so surreal and overwhelming made it so hard to believe. To me other women got pregnant! But believe me it IS happening to you!! Your body is doing exactly what is has been designed to do! Look after yourselves, relax and enjoy it! If you are finding it really hard to fathom do speak to your MW about it. I had post natal depression and during my therapy it became apparant that it started anti-natally, mainly because I couldn't comprehend or believe it was actually happening to me! This may not be the case with you, so don't fret - it's jsut my experience..xx

Jael - Oh babe - this is terrible for you. If you are in so much discomfort I would get back to the GP or phone your MW for an urgent referral to physio and get some approved painkillers. Not every SPD sufferer ends up in a wheelchair - a lot of it depends onthe position of the baby on your pelvis. A woman at my DS's school was on crutches a few weeks ago with it, and now she is managing fine without any. Sending you a big hug. With regards to getting your baby stuff - some shops will actually take a deposit on the items you want - they can order them in for you nearer the time. At least you could go out now and see what you fancy, and get it all ordered up!

runningmonkey · 25/11/2008 16:40

Ooh Jael that is v tempting and I don't mind second hand at all (the cot we're going to use is my old one from the 70s with a new mattress ) I am a bit worried about the weight/size issue tho. How about I try one out in the shops and let you know? Thanks!

Jael · 25/11/2008 16:44

I'd never heard of the NCT nearly new sales, just did a quick search and found one right in my town, only trouble is its not until the back end of March. I was hoping to be sorted by then. We've had a little look on ebay for things like a moses basket, but I'd rather "know" the person I was getting it from if you get what I mean?

Jael X

SweetBROODY · 25/11/2008 16:45

daisy thats exactly it - Its what happens to other people not to me!

maybe it will get easier to beleive when I have a bump!

Jael · 25/11/2008 16:47

Our plan was to sell that pushchair and put the money towards another pushchair for baby n maybe some other bits too. I don't think were going to get alot for it, as they've drastically come down in price since we bought ours MIL paid just over £500 fot it i think.

runningmonkey · 25/11/2008 16:51

Sounds good Jael, when I've had a look I'll let you know and we can talk cash!

SweetBROODY · 25/11/2008 17:19

Where can I find a comprehensive list of things i'll need ladies?

CoteDAzur · 25/11/2008 17:27

SweetBROODY - My best advice re what to buy is to wait until baby is born and then buy stuff as the need arises. Except the bare essentials like pram, bodies, comfy pants, babygro, socks etc

We made the mistake of buying everything we thought we might possibly need while still pregnant and used some of it maybe once and realized it wasn't right for us & our baby. You will have a much better understanding of what will be a better buy once the baby is here.

One example: We bought a battery-operated little machine that sucks gunk out of baby's nose. It cost about 100 euros Used it for two seconds before we realized that the noise it makes scares the hell out of a little baby. Then we realized local pharmacy sells simple tube devices with replaceable tips that you soundlessly use for an even better effect. Those cost maybe 5 euros.
