Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
hotmama · 28/11/2008 12:58

Last day at work today!

Just clearing my desk then I'm going at 3.30.

2 whole weeks before ds1 is born on the 15th (if not before - though unlikely).

Only got to do all of my Christmas shopping - eek!

I'm not married and ds1 will be dc3.

I've been with dp since I was 14 (I'm now 41). I did want to get married before children and especially before they started school - as I didn't want a different surname from the dc. My mum had a different surname from me as she remarried - I hated her being called Mrs Hotmama when she wasn't anymore!

Dd1 is starting school next year - and it is highly unlikely that I will have got married by then!

TBH nowadays it's not such an issue is it?

Mind you the dd's don't know that I have a different surname - they think we all have the same name - I haven't corrected them as it is a bit of a sore point with me!

Dp is on the birth certificates so he does have full parental responsibility.

Anyway, how is everyone getting on? Are there anymore imminent births?

It's getting exciting all these 'OOh, I've had a show posts'

abbymeg · 28/11/2008 13:03

Yep, dads do get automatic parental responsibility now. A name would have to be changed by deed poll, which - as long as no party objects - is really straightforward. My DD had her dad's surname and then we split. I changed her to mine by deed poll when she was 18 months old. Now I'm married to someone else and it's all very confusing !

I'm in secondary education, and I try to never, ever take anything for granted where parents names are concerned, because it means you're taking for granted the home life of a particular student, and we have kids living in all kinds of circumstances. However, it never fails to amaze me how many people do still assume that children are living with their married parents (and this does include other teachers as I'm often called Mrs (maiden name), like DD).

Hi lovely ladies.

Well, a milestone achieved for me today - I finally completed and lodged my Australian tax return! It's been weeks since I first started getting everything organised for it, and it's taken me forever to get it done but the great news is that I'm now due a refund of A$7200 (just over £3000). I'm so delighted as the money will be needed for when I finally get around to doing my UK tax return (which will be a bill, rather than a refund). Ahhhhh it's a good feeling to get a big job like that done and dusted.

Lal if you're still around and reading this, CHOOKAS as we say here in theatre language (which means good luck!) Hope all is progressing and that you get your lovely homebirth as planned.

Thanks for the Vitamin K info Invisible and Veggie. At this stage I still think we're going for the oral, but I'll research it again to see if I can find more info on risks vs benefits of the jab. For one thing, it would certainly be easier just to get one injection rather than having to go in for repeated oral dosages.

Katie that must have been a bit of a scare, hope you're feeling ok now. Good to know bubs is ok despite the temporary misdiagnosis.

trace it's a shame your significant other (I'm stayin well away from the DH/P just in case I get it wrong! ) disagrees with you about the cloth nappies issue, but I agree with you completely about being supportive of their views too. Hopefully you can find a compromise (perhaps you can use cloth, he can use disposables?) Your guinea pigs are very cute, they make me miss my rabbit we had in the UK. I'd agree with Effie, kayz in that they're not the easiest of pets, especially where very small children are concerned. Rabbits have a very timid nature and very wee kiddies can be just a bit too boisterous and rough - and this is speaking from having had rabbits when I was a child. We were too little really, but I think once kids are a bit older and can be a bit more gentle and quiet then it's fine. I'll put up a couple of pictures of our bunny - he was a house rabbit and completely toilet trained (well, almost completely... he did like to leave a couple of his currant size poopsies under the bed from time to time just to 'mark' his territory!) trace I also wanted to say it's great t to see that you got 2 g.pigs as companions, as they're like rabbits and are very social - having one by itself all alone in a cage all day is very sad and a bit mean for the pet IMO. I'm sure they're very happy having you look after them so well!

Regards married/unmarried & name changes, I kept my maiden name for professional purposes (um, ok, well it was really because neither of us could be bothered changing all my paperwork/ID over to another surname!) Actually I find it quite handy as I use my husband's surname as an 'alias' whenever I don't want to give my real name for non-official forms and stuff. I also never give out my home phone number these days, just my mobile, as I don't want it finding its way to marketing lists and ending up with us getting harassed at home by unwanted calls. Anyway DH & I only really got married to have a big party before we moved to the UK (and of course it helped with visa issues too for when we were in the UK, as he's got dual citizenship).

Joel is a lovely name. We have a "J" name at the top of our list at the moment, not that it's official. Just thought I'd mention it in case someone beats me to it. Not that I'm sure it will be a problem with this lovely group (and also because I'm over here in Australia! LOL)

Turnip - I looked up BCG vaccination, and it's for tuberculosis?!? Is your friend in a high risk category? Or is that standard over there? I don't think it is here. Hepatitis B is however, have any of you been asked about whether you want that vaccination done at birth over there?

I'm thinking about buying an overlocker to help with all the sewing I have to do in the next week. Any sewers here on the thread with any knowledge about brands? I want something sturdy but not too pricey. I recently bought a 2nd hand mechanical Pfaff sewing machine from the 80's that is awesome, and I'm sure it will last me a good long time. I'm going to have a look at making some fitted cot sheets this week as well as the fitted mattress protectors. I had a look online for the best way to make them fitted, and they look pretty easy to sew. It'll be nice as I can buy lovely fabrics to match the nursery. DH made me laugh yesterday too as he was looking for a 'poncho' on ebay so that he can wear it to protect himself from baby spew when he's holding his new DS! He meant this in a good way (as in he wants to hold the baby a lot) but I told him if he really wanted one I'd buy him some soft fabric and custom make one for him. So funny though. I would never have thought of that (but may be eating my words when I'm changing my clothes several times a day and he's spew free). I'm also thinking about making a couple of throws for the couches, just to protect them as it's a PITA washing the covers, they take ages to dry. So much to do.. this bub had better not come early, or I'll be stuffed!

abbymeg · 28/11/2008 13:09

A quick question - how can I tell whether I might be losing fluid? It's not constant, but am a bit concerned. I keep getting pains too, but I think these are just achy braxton hicks (Like other people have posted on this thread, it's been going on for over a week now). Baby isn't engaged and I'm only 36+5. Plus DD was 10 days overdue, so I'd be if this one decided to put in an early appearance.

Thanks .

Beans33 · 28/11/2008 13:10

It's an interesting topic. I wouldn't have minded having a baby and then getting married afterwards, but DH is very traditional and was keen to get married so we could then start a family. I found it quite endearing, really. Especially as I did want to get married at some stage as it just seemed the natural step, IYSWIM.

Each to their own, really. But I do think it's odd when people assume you're married or not.

One thing I find quite depressing, though, is when did I stop being "mademoiselle" in restaurants and become "madame"? That indicates aging to me, rather than marriage or not!!!!

Bisou · 28/11/2008 13:11

Oh and I'm so jealous that some of you have had a pic of LadyT's new bubby! Do you think she would mind if someone emailed it to the email group? I'm dying to see it!

JamInMyWellies · 28/11/2008 13:15

Abbey call your midwife and get it checked. Bit of a TMI question but does it smell of wee or is it odourless? If odourless you need to get checked out.

Bisou · 28/11/2008 13:16

wow abbymeg. I don't know. It's a bit early isn't it? I would ring the MW and get it checked out. I'm still excited for you though! Keep us posted

kayzisexpecting · 28/11/2008 13:17

Abby I agree with Jam. Ring your MW and ask if you can get it checked out. If it doesn't smell then it is normally your waters.

OP posts:
JamInMyWellies · 28/11/2008 13:21

On the TMI and wee does anyone else feel like they smell like an old peoples home. I am defo leaking wee and I have been quite vigilent about kegals.

Bisou · 28/11/2008 13:28

Jam mine's not wee but I seem to have an awful lot of leukorrhea, and can get a bit whiffy at times. I have to change my knickers or sometimes I use liners.

EffiePerine · 28/11/2008 13:29

abbeymeg: if you aren't sure, pop in a pad so you can see how much you might be leaking and if it smells (sorry!). Jam: am also leaking a bit, must remember to do those pelvic floors (in fact you reminded me!).

Bisou: BCG for babies is not standard here, but in my area of N London they recommend it as there are quite high levels of TB in the population. DS had it at his 6 weeks check.

Bisou · 28/11/2008 13:30

Am off to bed now - it's only 12.30am this time, hope I can fall asleep. I need to get back into a normal sleep pattern (as we'll have our 6mth niece visiting next week and waking us up nice & early!) Have a good day everyone.

abbymeg · 28/11/2008 13:32

It doesn't smell of much, but it's hard to tell as it's a scented pad - not much use! It was (TMI, this pregnancy lark can get a bit grim!) a big squirt this morning, but am just so achy and uncomfortable since then. I'll give them a call. Thanks folks

Bisou · 28/11/2008 13:33

ps: have now put those bunny pics up!

EffiePerine · 28/11/2008 13:33

Good luck abby

EffiePerine · 28/11/2008 13:34

love the bunny

also am pleased to see that Traceface's bump looks rather like mine - was thinking I was a completely different shape this time round

Beans33 · 28/11/2008 13:36

Jam - I don't have that so much, but I do have really heavy discharge and have had for ages. It's minging, but guess it's just one of those things.

A girl from my NCT had her show last night - she's due next Thursday. Exciting. I wonder if her baby will come soon!

kayzisexpecting · 28/11/2008 13:50

I have had quite heavy discharge too. It is horrible but you kinda get used to it.

OP posts:
abbymeg · 28/11/2008 13:56

They want to see me, so I'm going to go in for 5 (have to wait for DD to get picked up). I bet it's just wee. This could be embarrassing! Can't get over how achy I am, my back combined with BHs; I'm sure it's just my mind playing tricks on me, combined with weight of huge baby!

EffiePerine · 28/11/2008 13:59

I think it's a good idea to go in to get checked out. Do you have your bag packed in case?

poisondwarf · 28/11/2008 14:00

Pics of LadyT & the lovely Octavia in your inboxes now, ladies! Have checked btw and she is okay with this.

Beans33 · 28/11/2008 14:01

Does anyone else have skin tags on their nipples? I have got lots and just pulled a couple off. Not sure if I'm meant to or not, but I hate them! One is bleeding a bit now. Oh bugger.

Beans33 · 28/11/2008 14:06

Oh PD - gorgeous!!! Octavia is so very very sweet - I hope mine looks that sweet when it comes out. HEAVEN!

JamInMyWellies · 28/11/2008 14:07

Dont have them on my nips but a few by my armpit last time round I got one in my belly button I used to pick it and pull at it all the time.

Abby glad you are getting checked out tis for the best.
