Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My mum's been telling people I am the only one of my sisters and SILs who's used cloth nappies (not that I have yet, I should add) and she thinks this is all down to her of course I hope my sisters and SILs don't find out or I will get beaten up for being teacher's pet or something

I've been investigating TENS machines this afternoon after Lua's dh's success with his. I've found there are some massive differences between the ones suitable for pregnancy and the ordinary ones, as follows:

  • pregnancy ones say they are suitable for pregnancy and the ordinary ones say they are not
  • pregnancy ones are in girly colours.

So far that seems to be about it. But Lua, if you were thinking about borrowing dh's for some pain relief, perhaps you had better investigate. My current thinking is to get a girly one and then dh can use it til I need it! As he happily walks round the house in my pink slippers I don't think he'll object to the girly colour.

Uwila - I think your nanny is bad for your health. I think a younger nanny with no children of her own is the only solution - then she won't always think she is right.

Lippy - I did read alot at the beginning but I just find it boring now. I am sick to death of the whole thing and think that mucking through sounds much better than headaches from conflicting view points. The schools of thought are so contradictory - one says let the baby run free with the rabbits in nature and the other says regiment baby like they have joined the marine corps and thats not even counting the middle of the road opnions. It all just does my head in to be honest. I think I'll just refer to the big book I have when something isn't going right. Its just pure headache otherwise.

Gosh I am tired and the weather is so nice outside I'll have to force myself out for a walk - though I want to go to bed. I have been doing laundry all morning and paying bills - has anyone noticed how all the gas electricity is far more expensive than it used to be? I use energy saving everything and seem to still be paying extortionate prices

Lua · 18/03/2005 15:31

Uff... Just made it back from my 10 am appointment at the hospital!!! I might as well give up work the way is going....
Anyhoo... the good news is that baby is growing well, was acctively briefing and fluids are down! Hurray.

The not so good news is that I am glucose intolerant , no more choccies for me for the next 10 or so weeks [crying emoticon]. Actually I am really at a loss about how to eat to control my sugar being vegetarian. I rely pretty heavily on carbohydrates and cheese, which apparently together is the worst I can do.... I will have an appointmet with a dietician in 2 weeks to sort it out.

Uwila, yes, I was the one with loads of BHs. But they seems to have disaperaed lately - mw though I might have been due to the excess fluid. But it is very common to have them, especially second time around! Tell your uteruous that you have no intention on using its contraction and stop being a nonsense!

In the nany front... I can see why she is driving you mad, but she does seem to have her heart on the right place. Do you think you could approach her and explain that you decide to take an extra month off and that unfortunately that means you won't be able to afford her? She probably won't take it too badly this way?

PinkArjuna · 18/03/2005 15:32

tribpot you're right about the tens machine - tens just means anything with a electopulse. I used to have one to tone the muscles in my abs. You have to have a pregnancy one as all the settings are programmed in already - the others aren't suitable as you were saying. They only seem to rent them in boots and things and personally I think its a rip off seeing as you can get a new one for £5 more and sell it on afterwards. Then you know you'll definately have it. I have mine already and if I went into an early labour I could use it but if you were renting you wouldn't have one at all. Also I am genrally worrisome about the whole process so just have to get a bag to fit all the hospital stuff into now. I even have these ridiculous scratch mittens

PinkArjuna · 18/03/2005 15:36

Oh Lua thats not good - how will you manage? I know I don't eat sweets or anything but what else would you eat? cos it is your whole diet, how serious is it? I know the baby can get very big from storing extra fat (if I am thinking of the right thing) Or will you be able to manage because I knew a diabetic once who controlled it with her diet. thugh it was really difficult for her it was possible. Though I noticed she never ate anything nice...

Lua · 18/03/2005 15:38

Trib, I wonder if the power of the different tens machines is different? DH commented that he can't imagine anyone using his in the highest setting. However, if that's not different than there can't be anything significant... By the way, dh got his through his pain clinic to try it out for a couple of months.

Kvg, I am a firm believer that we have to look out for our own health. This is not for bashing the health system, but in reality when mws and doctors are seeeing huge number of patients every day they can't keep up! I was just telling my dh how I would probably would have never been diagnosed with gestational diabetes if I wasn't asking the right questions.... Both times I got a more detailed exam was because after them saying all is fine good buy, I came back and say, BTW what about that large fundus, can we check again...

Lua · 18/03/2005 15:41

Pink, I think it will have to be beans, beans and more beans!
My Dh mught be looking for a new place to sleep soon...

Cooperoo · 18/03/2005 15:44

Hello all
Bubba - sorry forgot to mention your card cloning nightmare before (no pen handy to take notes). That is dreadful. We have far too many bank accounts in the UK and because we live overseas our statements take a while to come thru so that could so easily happen to us without us knowing too. I hope Abbey pull their socks up and cough up. That is REALLY crap otherwise.
Trib - Thought of your bro quite a bit today. I am so pleased for him. Like Uwila said. It is SO good to have good news like that and the fact that the bureaucracy has seen sense. It has really restored some faith for me and made for a very 'feel good' sort of day.
Who mentioned Braxton Hicks? I have had loads this pregnancy and they started alot earlier than last time. They aren't painful but I find they can be uncomfortable. Your whole bump will go hard for a while. I guess it is your body practicing. Uwila, I do find I bring them on if I have been particularly active or doing some activity that is more strenuous than usual and I do make a point to sit down and relax. Although everyone says they are normal I sometimes see it as a bit of a warning sign that I am pushing myself. I had then every half hour for 24hrs a few weeks ago and my tummy and back ached like I had been doing sit ups all day. Someone told me they get worse with each pregnancy so perhaps that is why we are getting more earlier this time compared with our first pregnancies and those first timers amongst us.
Yay about the job interview. Completely agree it is crucial to enjoy your job!! Fingers crossed. And you can def not go off topic on this thread. If so I would love to know what it would be.
Bacon wheat crunchies are the best. I like the tomato ones occasionally too. Yet another thing I can't get here.
Uwila - Where does you nanny get off!!?? Changing dd's clothes. Glad you won on the egg thing. Unbelievable. I hope you can resolve the issue of her finishing working for you. How about telling her you can't afford to keep her over the maternity period you have off work and see if she gets any message. Hoepfully she will look for something else. Awful situation.
Well the party was a great success. I am not nearly as shattered as I was last year and really enjoyed myself. The cake was great too and all my biscuits went too. I came home and did all the washing up and now have a free evening. Feels good. Dh (my own little Johnny Wilkinson) has gone off to play an important rugby match tonight so I have the TV to myself and everything if I decide not to go down and watch him. I managed to fit a haircut in too and my hairdresser has done a great job. I am in the middle of growing my hair out and you know how hard that can be.
Comedy moment of the party was dd crying at the top of the soft play area and me leaping up the soft stairs to get to her and realising that I am PREGNANT and can't fit through the soft rollers and round to the bit where she was stuck. I had to get my friends 10 yo daughter to help me get her. She was absolutely fine after all that but I did have to laugh at myself. What did I think I was going to do???

Cooperoo · 18/03/2005 15:46

Blimey, you have all been busy while I was typing that essay. Off to catch up now....

PinkArjuna · 18/03/2005 15:47

But Lua thats so awful though I am partial to the tesco's spicy bean burgers. They probably have some sort of sugar added though - most things do.

I had had all these visions of eating nice cheese and things when I first though about the pregnancy - only to find out you weren't allowed Though I must confess the other day I ate pate because I really wanted it and eating pate once isn't exactly going to kill me (though if bubba is born with birth defects I'll blame the pate) I was dying for some Camembert the other day and had to forcibly retract my hand from loading the basket - I don't know if my resolve will last. MMMmmmm bree and stilton, I am sure I am dreaming about them. Infact I don't think I have eaten anything that good since being pregnant

Oh Lua, what a pain for you. Why do you have to stop cheese too? I hope the dietician can help. Pulses are full of protein aren't they, lentils and chickpeas. Hmm not inspiring. Hummous would be good though and full of calcium too. Will try not to mention sweet things any more. Did your urine checks not show anything? I thought this was how they spotted things normally? Push for your parentcraft classes. I completely missed all my post natal ones cos no-one told me about them and I didn't chase it.

Cooperoo · 18/03/2005 15:56

Ohh pate!! Camembert!! Oh not long to go.....

Lua · 18/03/2005 15:58

That's right Coop, my urine was clean in every single test!

Pink, my MW told me sommerset brie was OK... not sure she is right or not but decided that with her blessing I was OK once or twice .
For some reason though I won't cross the line with stilton. Although, if it is cooked is oK. A yummy broccoli and stilton soup my take care of your carvings?
Oh no, I can't have any of the above now... [pouting emoticon]

Cooperoo · 18/03/2005 16:08

Lua- That is a warning to us all . Yet again I get the feeling I am too blase about this whole thing.

Cooperoo · 18/03/2005 16:12

Lua - Did you ever get my CAT? Think I must have done something wrong as haven't heard back from you?
Anyone seen Nab recently?

No smoked salmon. Eeek! I missed that one. I had LOADS over Christmas. Had a real craving for it. Oh well. Too late now. Sorry can't help with your palpitations.... Sure someone else will be more reassuring though.

uwila · 18/03/2005 17:03

Lua, can you ask the dietician about the evils of protein in the morning?? Just kidding. Do you like tofu? My sister is veggie and loves tofu. I hate it, unless it's in miso soup. Speaking of which, don't forget sushi in the post preggie binge.

Well, I am off to Tesco and then to have another unpleasant chat with nannythug. I'm sure it will be as successful as the last one. I fill you all in later. But, if you are tired of hearing about it, feel free to tell me so and I'll TRY to shut up.

Afternoon all,

Managed to get on here quickly whilst ds grabed a nap...but I suspect he's waking up now - typical and all I've managed to do is just about catch up!

Lua, so sorry to hear your results, esp as I got my all clear on the glucose tolerance letter through this morning. I'm veggie too, and I'm sure as someone else has already said it's about keeping your sugar levels stable, so you could try and follow a low GI type diet...brown rice/pasta is good for that, along with wholemeal breads. Not sure why the cheese would be a problem...and I eat tons of the stuff, so that would be my menu buggered! Pulses are good, and nuts too (not including peanuts tho, visa vie the earlier conversations). Tofu as Uwila says is very good too, but I'd suggest getting the flavoured ones or marinating them for a while as they taste of sh*te otherwise, he he he! Sorry I can't think of anything more right now...ooh except fruit - apples / pears /strawberries are good so long as they're not too ripe, but avoid melon / grapes / dried fruit as these break down into sugars very quickly. Hopefully your dietitian will be able to come up with some better and more varied ideas for you.

Trib - fantastic news for your brother and sil - so how long til they get their precious new addition??

Bubb - how awful re Abbey in my experience shouting loudly, constantly going to see them and writing lots of snotty letters usually gets you somewhere, although I realise time to do all of these is not always possible. Hope it gets sorted soon...incidentally have you tried using the 'I'm nearly 7 months pregnant and stress will bring on an early labour...' tact to try and hurry things along?? Sometimes works.

Quick oh bless moment...this morning when I couldn't be bothered to get up at the crack of dawn, with ds jumping all over my head shouting 'wake up mummy' I said 'why don't you be a poppet and make mummy breakfast in bed, then I don't need to get up so early'. OK came the reply as he toddled off in the direction of his bedroom to play. 5 minutes later I'm awoken by a strange noise (bearing in mind dh is supposedly looking after ds, to allow me 10 more minutes...) and discover ds has brought my breakfast cereal up to me in bed...bless...and is currently pouring the contents of said cereal all over the bed whilst proudly proclaiming '...here you are mummy breakfast in your bed...'!!!!! that'll teach me to be more careful about what I say in future

Lynney - glad you're feeling a bit better now and the headaches seem to have gone.

KVG fingers crossed re your dh and the job.

Uki your antenatal care sounds like a cross between what Coop will get and what we seem to get over here - nice as is prob the best of both. Glad you've moved on from that silly woman the other week, just not worth worrying about

Wheat crunchies - mmmmmm the best crisps out there, esp tomato and worcester sauce flavours, yum!

Oh I was right he's waken up fully now...ho hum...will try and catch up more over the weekend, in the meantime hope everyone has a fab one! Take care...
