Here's a new thread for us all lovely Dec Mums!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Turniphead1 · 07/11/2008 18:41

Beans glad you had reached your last day, lucky thing and hope the pizza is good!

Daisy lovely you had a nice week but a shame about your grandad. I'm no good on the medical stuff myself.

Oli and others how have made the homebirth decision - well done! I am really pro-them and wouldn't hestitate myself (except for the fact that I look foward to having a couple of days R n R in peace at hospital - something to do with having 2 DC maybe...)

indith that is a great real nappy summary. I am to say I have a pack of the two part ones - can't recall the name - that I got for DS and then didn't progress it. I got inspired by my cousins wife who is a real nappy girl and then ran out of steam! I will; get them out again and see if they are the right sizes for a newborn.

WG thanks for the update on blogger. She sounds totally mental . Well at least you know not to take it personally, she is just bonkers....but hope she doesn't take the whole BF thing too far. You can use advanced pg/newborn as an excuse and hopefully not be publicly denounced on the Interweb!

Trace only know one person whose waters broke out and about - in a cafe. I wouldn't worry. It's unlikely, and if it happens it will be cool. Also bear in mind you can get a partial breaking of waters - when the hind waters go giving you some leak but not the full on gush and pop you get with the whole shebang.

I had a hindwater leak with DD (first baby) and was all excited thinking she would come that night. Three days later she finally arrived...

Effie glad your scan went well and size good!

veggie and emma sorry you are feeling lacklustre today. DVDs are a great backup for those off days. I set aside my normal "rules" when pg - does no harm.

My friend who was being induced had her baby - a little girl 6lb 12. No name as yet. It was a c-section last night at 11.30. I was about 99% sure that's how it would end up alas as it seemed nothing was at all ready to kick off. I really don't understand the logic. If it was so imperative that she be induced at 40 weeks bang on (which is when they started inducing her, due to concerns that her previous stillbirth was related to placenta function) - then why was she allowed to continue on for 3 days when she clearly wasn't favourable to induction? Anyway, the main thing is that she has her lovely baby girl safe and sound. But she is way more knackered than she needs to be, as is her DH. Sorry, end of rant.

Veggiemummy · 07/11/2008 18:48

Turnip-sorry she had to go through that, but great result must be very emotional for you all after previous stillbirth. She is very brave for trying for natural birth. I'm a big advocate for the natural birth hence trying for a home birth but have to admit that if something like that had happened to me i would be pushing for a c section at 38 weeks just to be sure. Well done to your friend.

Olipop · 07/11/2008 19:59

Evening! Thank you for all the cheerleading in response to homebirthing!! You lot are great...I'll def check out the childbirth thread.

I've now totally forgotten everything else I have read

I'm in my PJ's already and just had pitta and taramasalata (which I am sure is a banned substance) and DH has left me a MASSIVE bar of dairy milk and gone out for the evening...DS is asleep and I am a happy girl!

Nolda · 07/11/2008 20:23

Olipop Yum, I love taramasalata. I'm very jealous .

Daisydora my mum had shingles recently and I discovered from my GP and also from internet that chickenpox can only be caught from someone with shingles if they touch the blisters as you say. I don't see any reason why your grandad shouldn't be able to give your baby a cuddle so long as the blisters are covered (and, if it were me, as long as he washed his hands first and dried them on a clean towel, but then I'm a bit of an anti-germ freak!!).

Everything was fine at my appointment with the midwife today. Baby is measuring 2cm big though. Although I know that bump measuring is not an exact science, it is a bit worrying as DD was 9lb 9.

Olipop · 07/11/2008 20:30

Nolda...I am now starting to get fearful of a bigger baby!! My measurements are spot on but EVERYONE comments on the size of my bump...'you sure there is only one'...'when are you due...last month' etc etc!!!! Although my bump was pretty big with DS and he came out 8lb 3. Maybe I should knock the dairy milk on the head!

kayzisexpecting · 07/11/2008 20:35

Evening,

I hope everyone is ok. I'm sorry I have skim read and I don't really remember what I have read.

I've felt awful all day and been sick 5 times. Maybe my morning sickness is starting at 35 weeks.

kmp1 · 08/11/2008 05:24

well i've been up since 0430 staring at the ceiling.... I get that restless legs syndrome a lot and it's more often than ever now especially recently - so annoying!
Thanks to all who said about the sleeping bags / babygro's etc. I will look for a suitable one. 2 friends just had their babies - one in Australia - E C/S 6lb 13! and I think a natural 9lb 14!! Well I hope i can get back to sleep soon! I was having a peek at some of the photos - Veggie your ds is so cute!

Olipop · 08/11/2008 06:37

morning kmp1....hope you got back to sleep hon!

traceface · 08/11/2008 07:47

Indith - WOW! you know your real nappies!!! Thank you for the very helpful post! Am having a bit of a battle TBH - tried discussing it with DH last night and he is not with me on this at all. He wants to use disposable and would happily choose bio-degradable ones (nature baby?) but won't entertain the real nappy thing. Why are men so pig-headed?! He might chill out and think about it - I think I got him at a tired moment which was probably not best...
kmp - hope you managed a little more sleep - my legs are so restless too but more in the evenings before I go to bed.
Kayz - sorry you're feeling so rotten. Hope the sickness is just a fleeting bug and that you're soon feeling better. I guess that would explain why you've felt so tired the last few days.
Well I had a nesting moment yesterday and even put the sheets on the Moses Basket! I have packed my hospital bag and am feeling quite ready practically - if not psychologically!

Indith · 08/11/2008 08:09

Have you tried the cost angle trace? You can kit yourself out with terries for next to nothing and use old flannels etc as cloth wipes then add up 10 nappies a day and a pack of wipes a week for a newborn and show him the difference! Mind you what really got dh onside was comparing the feel of a nice soft nappy and the free pampers that came in the bounty pack, he knew which he would rather have against his skin!

kmp hope you are sleeping

Kayz hopefully "just" a bug and you feel better soon.

Turnip great news on the birth, not the best way to get there but still must be wonderful.

Veggie I just like nappies

The MW wasn't kidding when she said this one was getting further and further down...the pressure in my arse is indescribable and doing anything that pushes down makes it hurt (like going to the loo, blowing my nose..) Don't remember this from ds! But then he didn't bother getting ready to come out, he just did. If this is how it is until d-day then this one can jolly well come at 37 on the dot thanks, I'm not staying like this til 42 weeks!

kayzisexpecting · 08/11/2008 09:21

Morning,

I am feeling much better thanks. It must have just been a little bug.

I think I might have had a little show this morning. There was some blood but not bright red blood, more a pinky orange colour. I didn't have a show or anything with DS so I'm not too sure.

Do you think I need to pack my bag????

Bisou · 08/11/2008 10:11

Hi everyone, yet another thread! Sorry if some of the following replies are a bit outdated...

JollyBear thanks for the Auzzie crunch recipe (I hadn't heard of it before either but it sounds yummo), and sorry Katie that was my fault as I'd asked for it. Hopefully your GD will go after birth (I've heard this is usually the case?), and we can all have it as post-baby celebration food

LadyT I'm not actually learning any music at the moment (as I'm on maternity leave and it's too much like work!) but when I go back in January I'll be singing in Mozart's opera The Magic Flute. What opera did you see at La Scala? I studied for a while in Italy, but unfortunately at the time La Scala was closed for renovations, so I didn't get to see anything there. Fortunately though, there are many lovely opera houses in Italy so I wasn't too disappointed.

To the ladies craving chalk/makeup pencils etc - have you had your iron levels tested? It's called Pica when you crave or want to eat those things, and I think it's thought that it may be due to a deficiency in vitamans or minerals. I'm having my iron and vitamin levels checked next week at my MW appointment, as my iron levels were a bit low last blood test. Have bought a bottle of Floradix in advance but will wait for the result to start taking it. Haven't had the desire to eat any eyeliner pencils though yet, how disappointing

Turniphead thanks for the info on your birthbag favourites - I didn't know about the camomilla drops, so have made a note of it.

LadyT LOL about the doing the full 'makeup shebang' after birth (I know I will be wanting the same! hehe)

Summer and Veggie, about the no perfume/deodorant issue, I've been using one of those mineral crystal anti-perspirants for the last few months, and surprisingly it's been working amazingly well in the hot weather over here. I was skeptical at first as it didn't seem to work, until I read the instructions and realised it needed to be slightly dampened before applying! But the great thing is it doesn't smell at all (either of fragrance, or of sweat) and is much more natural than using the normal commercial stuff, so I'm happy with that. It's this one if you're interested.

Veggie - 1.8L of eucalyptus oil! Crikey! I was going to ask what you needed all that for, but then you mentioned you use a couple of drops in the wash with the eco balls. I really want some of those eco balls now, they look great.

Indith great news on the job, congrats!

waitinggirl congrats on the distinction for your dissertation too, very well earned!

I am worried about any of you who are swigging gaviscon - my midwife told me implicitly not to do that but to measure the dosage and not take more than it says on the bottle. If it's not working, you should definitely see a doctor to get some more effective medication. There are H2 Blockers or PPI's (Proton Pump Inhibitors) which can be used during pregnancy which are deemed safe, especially as it's no longer the 1st trimester. PPI's are great (and generally more effective than H2 blockers) and I have used them before for reflux/heartburn, and have been advised if it gets bad then I can always take them again. Fortunately my heartburn is not too bad at the moment

waitinggirl how are you going with your furniture hunt? Have you tried ebay? We got some great stuff on there really cheap and it looks virtually brand new. It was a 3 piece matching set (cot, change table, chest of drawers) in solid wood for about £40. My BIL in the UK did the same and got a lovely wood cot & change table for £45. So it may be worth a look if you haven't found anything yet. Also well done with handling the 'bloggate' so well, I think I would have dealt with it much more irrationally and completely cut her out of my life. Hard to do though I understand if your DH's are friends...

Hatty HOORAY you amazing placenta-moving-marvel! I knew you could do it!

kayz glad you got the all clear on GD.

jumpjockey you don't have a link to that thread about pushing in childbirth do you? Sounds like it would be an interesting read (as a first timer too, I am thirsty for knowledge about all things labour related!)

TYV - you reminded me that a will is something DH & I have been meaning to do for a while. Didn't think about the childbirth aspect of it but I guess you never know

chutney hang on in there with those niggles, hope you're feeling better soon!

Beans can I play devil's advocate and say that I think even though those women in the Daily Mail article may come across as vain and selfish in a way for wanting an 'easy' way to avoid childbirth, that adopting and bringing up an unwanted child is still a lovely and selfless thing to do? There was a part of me that actually felt bad about bringing a child into this world when I know full well there are so many children waiting who are in desperate need of a safe and loving home. I can see how the article is offensive however to women who choose to have their own child, and I guess that is part of the problem with the sensationalisation/one-sided-ness that we so often see in the press.

Verso how scary with your fall! At least you know your bub is well protected in there but it still doesn't stop the shakes or the anxiousness that follows a fall. I fell on the pavement about a month ago, and it took me ages to stop worrying about doing it again. In fact I still worry!

Indith GREAT post about cloth nappies, and traceface it's fab you want to try reuseable nappies, we are definitely going to be using them. Have a look at my pics - I've put up one that I made myself, and it only cost me about £2 to make. I've heard nothing but good things about them from those who use them, and the amount of money you will save is phenomenal too - can you try that tact with your DH? Otherwise perhaps get him to read a couple of pro-cloth nappy websites like this or this in his own time to let him have a think about it. Eco disposables are better than normal disposables of course, but I think as veggie has mentioned previously, part of the problem is that the poo still goes into landfill rather than being treated at as sewerage. And of course they still need to be manufactured, which is another environmental issue. If money is not a problem (as bio disposables are more expensive and if he is considering them, then perhaps this is the case), could you reach a compromise with a nappy laundering service? You should still pay no more than using disposables but it is better for the environment and some would say better for baby (although this will be my first time using cloth, so that's just from what I've read, not personal experience!) rosmerta I hope your DH comes around on it too! I think you should both use the "so can we use cloth nappies now?" line just after giving birth. How could they say no after you've done that???

Bisou · 08/11/2008 10:14

oops sorry Indith X post about the nappy cost factor.

kayz - I don't know, should you ring a MW to check?

mibbes · 08/11/2008 12:39

kayz maybe worth calling MW. I guess if it is a show then it would be worth getting your bag ready just in case how exciting !

Bisou what an amazing post, how are you ?

Beans I was dying to post yetserday as it was my last day too - I knew you'd be excited too ! However I was so busy and hadn't factored in time for well-wishers so totally manic until the last minute ! My desk was covered in balloons, banners and confetti stuff - I was given soooo many lovely gifts: haribo, green and blacks chocs, Covent garden products and a book for me. Vests, sleepsuits, wee jackets, products, books, toys and a bath seat for baby ! Also got a voucher for the local salon and for the local ceramic centre to have an imprint/outprint of baby's feet/hands done ! Baby and I have been very lucky and I have been out for 3 lunches this week . Not sure how I feel about ML - am glad to be able to rest and concentrate on getting everything organised but will miss the work chat and mental stimulation.

DP off out on his last drunken day today. I am planning to do some nesting and pack my hospital bag

kmp1 · 08/11/2008 13:44

Thanks all - went back to sleep until abiut 10 when DH rang - had gone on massive bike ride, fell off and broke a bit on bike so couldn't ride it back- followed sat nav to middle of nowhere in pouring rain - took forever! Back now and not too much bike damage thankfully, though not pleasant weather to do all this in! thankfully restless legs have stopped!

Indith · 08/11/2008 14:05

Wow Kayz! Keep us updated. You are what..35 weeks? Doesn't mean that anything is happening right away but do try and keep your legs crossed for a couple more weeks

Bisou your nappy looks so cute and cuddly, what pattern did you use? I've seen a few on the web and never been brave enough. Tempting though.

Been attempting to organise crap stuff the past couple of weekends. All the camping stuff is now in the shed and the loft and all baby clothes in ds's room though not all put away yet (he has 2 spare chests of drawers in there). Each time I think I'm done I find another box! Tis quite fun although I dispair when I hit a box of 6 month stuff...all those weaning stains that never quite came out! Almost done, have a small pile for charity shop of clothing gifts of questionable taste (why would anyone think that your 3 month old needs a denim jacket? Especially one with elbow patches and a sheepskin collar!) Next I need to wash the storage smell out of the 0-3 stuff, if I can find a drying slot for it all!

Veggiemummy · 08/11/2008 14:51

Just popping myself in here for a quick bookmark, have been busy watching the Arsenal man U game hooooorrrrrraaaayyyyyy. gotta go now to do collect DS from his friends house.

traceface · 08/11/2008 17:16

Hello all!
Thank you for the real nappy tips...will se how things go with dh!
Well I've had a bit of an eventful day - had a bleed this morning (not had one before) so rang midwives and they sent me to labour ward. I was a bit freaked out at being put in a delivery room! Anyway - all was fine and it seems I have a graze on my cervix, so nothing to worry about. However while I was there my silly blood pressure was sky high and with 'my history' (I'm getting sick of hearing that!) they had to do bloods etc, but BP came down enough for them to let me come home. Think it was probably only so high because I had to have a doctor peer into my vagina with a large instrument! All's well though so I can block that out now!!! Seeing MW monday for BP check - fingers crossed!
Kayz - hope you're ok...keep us posted!

artichokes · 08/11/2008 18:32

Hi All

This is my first post on teh new thread as I have been really busy trying to finish work. Sadly I failed and I think I will have to go in for at least another week. I just want to stop now but I am such a perfectionist I cannot bear the idea of leaving things in a less than perfect state.

Kayz - I had a show today too! I was out having brunch with DH and DD and I suddenly felt something weird in my pants (!). It looked likea large glob of clear jelly (no blood). I never had one with DD so I phoned the midwife but she said it does not necessarily mean a thing and I may well still have weeks to go... the indignities of pregnancy!

Bugger, DD just fell over. Back later. X

EffiePerine · 08/11/2008 19:28

Trace: glad the bleed was nothing serious.

Kayz and Arti: no experience with early shows, I think mine was about 24 hours before DS arrived. I think youngvisiter has had a show as well but no other symptoms.

Successful house-hunting trip today, have found a house noth DH and I like, plus I got a haircut! Badly needed. So if all goes well and we manage to sell this place, may have found somewhere to live and a hairdresser in one day. Pretty good going I feel .

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekends, despite the crappy weather.

theyoungvisiter · 08/11/2008 19:32

I finally got round to speaking to teh MW about the show I had last week (same kind of thing as you describe arti) and she said the same - it shows things are on the move but not necessarily how fast so no need to panic.

But I think really good idea to have a bag packed just in case anyway - it can't hurt and you just know if you don't pack it, sods law you will have to do a mad dash and end up forgetting something vital like nappies!

I have mine packed (I'm hoping for a home birth - crosses fingers madly - but figured if I do have to rush into hospital for some reason I don't want to have to decide what colour PJs to take.)

theyoungvisiter · 08/11/2008 19:38

PS I am a real nappy user - DS has a variety of different types, but all pre-folds, mostly totsbots with Rikki wraps, and I love them.

However I think I might wimp out slightly and use disposables for the meconium poos at first, blurgh.

kayzisexpecting · 08/11/2008 21:04

Hello,

I rang the labour ward about the blood and they said it was likely to be a partial show. If it gets watery I have to go in straight away but I haven't had anymore so all is fine.

We're using re-usable nappies this time round. We'll probably copy TYV and use disposables for the first few days. I can't wait to buy them and then work out how to use them.

I hope everyone is ok.

Veggiemummy · 08/11/2008 21:31

Right i'm all caught up and have settled down after the big win. I was so nervous and excited by the game that it has got veggiebaby all worked up and he is jumping punching and kicking about in there.

Indith- I have the same pressure on my bottom place and when he has hiccups it feels...well very weird on...my...well...anus. The MW last week said he is very low.

thanks Kmp, we think he's a cutie, i can't remember what photo i put on there i have to find the post birth shot of him wrapped up in his arsenal towel.

Traceface- as Bisou said one of the worst things about disp nappies is the landfill poo issue. If poo is left in the nappy, as nappy & poo breaks down together it gives off a toxic gas and creates a highly toxic liquid. Landfills have now had to be redesigned deal with it. Also there is the obvious space taken up by nappies. But you can reduce the inpact by using the bio ones (nature baby, molto oxo etc) and just scrape the poo out into your toilet (diff with early poo though so as much as you can). Also if you put them in a little nappy bag when you throw them away use a biodegradable nappy bag, also available from nature baby.

TYV- we didnt have any meconium poos to deal with with DS as he got rid of all of his about 30mins after the birth, just about the time i handed him to DH. Luckily DH was wearing a lovely pair of white cargo trousers hehehe. Our very nice MW kindly washed them for him. But for a tip if you are having your baby somewhere that you stay overnight and your DH is staying with you don't forget he needs a change of clothes and PJ's too!! We forgot and DH had to use one of the birth centers dressing gowns and be very careful to keep his legs closed.

kayzisexpecting · 08/11/2008 21:35

Veggie Are you a fellow Gooner?????? YAY!!!!! We were so good this afternoon, I was shouting and screaming. Those 6 minutes of extra time nearly killed me!!
