Go get it, MarkStretch!

KazzaL · 12/11/2008 13:16

me too catstar & QK - I thought it was cos this is DC2 and so gravity & the lack of stomach muscle tone combined and dragged the bump out over the day

KazzaL · 12/11/2008 13:19

Markstretch - electric blankets are the way to go - mine doesn't fit on the new bed we bought when we moved house and so when I;m really cold I go and snuggle up in the spare room bed . I've been trying to be good since the heating went back on and keep the thermo on 18 or 19, but DH keeps turning it up moaning he's cold (try putting a jumper on then, I mutter under my breath at him)

Calico1 · 12/11/2008 13:39

Thought I'd add that despite the showhome tidiness that DH insists on, he is also a bit blind when it come to actually cleaning things - i.e. as long as it's put away it doesn't matter if it is a bit filthy........which means that when I get cutlery / plates etc out of the cupboards I have to wash them again before I can use them. He denies this of course....

I also get told off if I don't pile the dishes correctly on the drainer - apparently there is a system.....ggrrrrrr

Yes, me too on the big bump, little bump thing. I thought I has squashed it by lying on it at night!

nkweto · 12/11/2008 13:48

Catstar.. 28 hours labour is no mean feat!! you did brilliantly.. dont ever say you didnt do very well

High grime threshold or not.. make a plan with your DH.. just becuase he doesnt notice the mess doesnt me he cant help out.

To my shame.. my DH taught that lesson to me , but now I know what what my responsibilities are I am pretty good at getting them done!

MarkStretch · 12/11/2008 13:51

Well with all the talk of pork products, I have just warmed myself with a bacon sandwich. Lots of bacon in a french stick with lashings of tomato ketchup.

mumoverseas · 12/11/2008 13:59

that is SOOOOOO mean taunting me that like that (much nicer with brie though!) hope you enjoyed it though MS
Got weighed a few days ago and have only put on about 6lb since June which is a bit odd. Methinks however that 6 weeks of bacon sandwiches in the Uk will sort that out!

swampster · 12/11/2008 14:09

Even with your GINORMOUS feet, they are far bigger than sock-sized MS! I sit with mine behind my back all the time - sleep with it there when I'm cold or I've got bad lower back pain too. I would put it on my bump but don't want to cook the sprogget.

swampster · 12/11/2008 14:10

And it is your move on Wordscraper, MS, and I have just TWO letters left!

swampster · 12/11/2008 14:14

Oh, and KazzaL, I'm no BumGenius expert my first arrived today so I am trialling it right now (without prewashing!) - well, DS2 is wearing it, not me. So far I like it - I really do find the whole two-part nappy-and-wrap malarkey a real faff!

TinkerBellesMum · 12/11/2008 14:15

Have a look in Childbirth, there?s a thread called something like ?how amazing is the human body? it wasn?t that she was big, she?d been knocked out on the pethidine. The body takes over when there?s no input from the mother, just like women in comas can give birth and I?ve even heard of a woman who had a natural birth under GA!

Nkweto, absolutely, no one should feel under pressure. The right attitude though is a big help, to know what it all means and that was all I was trying to put over. I did G&A with Lily-Hope for the last hour, I?d been at home alone thinking I was suffering from a UTI until then, but wasn?t allowed anything with Tink as I may have had to have (which I did) a GA so I never got so far that I may have wanted something so it wouldn?t be fair of me to say that pain relief is unnecessary. I plan to hold off with anything this time if I get my VBAC because I don?t want to mask break through pain as I?m a higher risk of scar rupture. If I do take anything it will probably be G&A.

On the nappies front, I find them far easier than disposables, I?m convinced if she had to rely on me to buy them I?d either be broke from buying them for the corner shop when I forgot or she would be potty trained very quickly or she would go nappyless a lot.

THOM, I find Kendal is great if you can get hold of it, my local shop has sold out. I break it up and suck a piece, take my time eating it. It?s the peppermint oil in it that helps.

Calico, I?m with you! I?m about the only person in my family who doesn?t get the bleach out at least once a week. I do keep the place clean, but that doesn?t mean I spend all weekend cleaning, but it?s not very tidy - it?s not that bad though, it just seems it compared to the show homes my family keep!

Swampster, you?re right you would have needed an epidural anyway but you?re also right that it does become a slippery slope. My antenatal trainer was saying that as soon as you go into hospital you?re on the clock. They keep track of where you are on their timeline and plot baby?s movement on a chart and at set points if you?re not moving on to the next stage they?ll come and offer you some intervention. It?s often put to you like it?s not an option this is what we do next and often, especially first timers will just accept it - after all this is a professional who knows far more about this than ?I? do. There is a good cartoon explanation in the film ?The Business of Being Born? that shows how it goes from one to the other.

dinkystinky · 12/11/2008 14:25

Mrsy- DH was a bit dubious when took him to first dance performance but loved it and hasnt complained once since! If it wasnt for me booking theatre tickets, gigs and dance performances we'd probably never go out, so he's pretty happy to go with the flow. We also took DS to his first dance thing a few weekends ago (a special kids orientated dance show lasting 30 minutes) which he loved - I figure if I give my boys a love of art in all forms my job here will be well done . DH and DS do get to do lots of boys things too - DH cant wait till DS turns 4 so he can take him climbing with him at the indoor climbing centre he goes to...

swampster · 12/11/2008 14:27

In my case, aside from being induced in the first place, which I do feel I was pressured into, I appreciate that I was given every opportunity to have the birth I wanted. It was me who asked for an epidural, and was given one when I wanted it. And the CS was because DS1 was in distress after 24 hours and needed to come out fairly quickly.

nadssss · 12/11/2008 14:30

I just had the same soup for lunch too QK ? delicious ? my bump is massive at the end of the day too ? also my bellybutton is half out by the end of the day. Always thought that was a bit grim but actually quite like it now it is happening to me! I had been looking forward to the warmth of being pregnant (as I am normally always freezing) but it hasn?t happened to me either ? still cold all the time.

The baby was also right up at the side of my ribs last night ? really weird. The midwife was yesterday able to tell me where her head and bum were which was pretty amazing.

On a more superficial matter, anyone thought of binding their tummy after birth with the ?belly bandit? www.boohoobaby.co.uk/prod_show.asp?id=1016

spottyshoes · 12/11/2008 14:47

I'm with you on the VBAC pain relief for the same reasons TBM.

I wanted a natural birth last time but dont beat myself up for not having one. And wont if I dont get one this time Dont think anyone should, how you parent the baby for the rest of their life is more important than how you delivered them!

My extra Cotton bottoms and tots bots wraps came yesterday, big thumbs down for the tots bots - they are very thin and cheap feeling, You can get the equivalent from ebay (Junior joy i think) £2.20 for 2!!!

Love the cotton bottoms though and now have space rockets, jungle scene and frog designs. Bizarre I should be so excited but after mostly white/cream for 19 months it IS a major source of excitement [sadcow emoticon]

Waiting for Asda delivery man am bored.

spottyshoes · 12/11/2008 14:49

My computer has gone funny - TBM's post was the last one there when I started typing and it certainly didn't take me half an hour to do it!!!???

mumoverseas · 12/11/2008 14:50

Kazza, ref loft conversion, were you wanting dormer windows? If so, that could be the problem. we've just had a loft conversion done in the summer and didn't want to have dormer windows, just velux at the back. we had absolutely no problems with it and didn't need to put in for planning permission, just building regulations. We are detached though and my understanding is that if you are a semi or terraced you need to get approval but normally it is just a formality. We used a company called Econoloft who are based in Lancashire but they have a Southern office in West Wickham and do loft conversions all over the country. Ours started 2nd week in July and finished by 3rd week of August and they were really good. They will do a free quote and give an indication as to whether planning/building regs will be an issue. Might be worth contacting them if only for a free second opinion.

TinkerBellesMum · 12/11/2008 14:57

I thought Cotton Bottoms doesn't exist anymore? I used them and love them.

Swampster what you can never know (because we can't live time twice) is how the interventions affected your decision to have an epidural. The interventions can increase the effect of each contraction and make them more painful and harder to deal with.

spottyshoes · 12/11/2008 15:00

I think they stopped making them a few month back but there are still a few sites with stock to get rid of, I linked the one I used earlier in the thread.

I think I may break the bank and order some in the biggest size too as I can imagine DS being potty trained any time soon!

swampster · 12/11/2008 15:01

Oh, I do know that I had the epidural because I was induced. But I also think that a CS was a likely result whatever. So I would have had an epidural regardless.

nkweto · 12/11/2008 15:06

TBM.. we are absolutely on the same page, and the human body is truly and incredible thing! and for all the interventions that happened to me.. I genuinely enjoyed labour (appreciate I had nothing fundemental to worry about till the last half hour..)

I really must do some work today!

PinkTulips · 12/11/2008 15:06

Mamagoose, i've had migraines my entire life that painkillers don't touch..... trust me, compared to that the productive pain of labour is positively relaxing

had antenatal check at the gp's today and the nurse simultaneously told me i was tiny for 28 weeks and wrote =D under my fundal height so you can imagine how seriously they take that paticular excercise here i've only ever had the tape measure done by trainee doctors in the hospital in all 3 pregs, fully qualified docs and mws know better than to pay it too much heed.

catstar, ds was born still back to back and i never even realised til a couple of months ago when dp told me! a posterior labour doesn't automatically equate to a hellishly painful labour but the 'management' of such a labour that is often done by the medical professionals involved quite often does. try not to become too worried about babies position and presume that if baby is back to back again that your experiance will be the same, there's alot of good info on the net for dealing with posterior presentation right into labour if necessary and on top of that as it's your second if baby is in the worng position you may still find it much easier simply because your body is already stretched a bit by the first.

lardybump · 12/11/2008 17:45

Evening ladies.

I need some advise. I am really getting worried about the birth because of my size. I am huge and a lot bigger than I was last time. I know I have been going on about it for a while but I really am worried. With dd she was early and 8lb 4 so chances are this one is going to even bigger.

I had to have help getting dd out and the labour was horrific (although the care I received was second to none.) So to put my mind at rest and to convince my MW to induce me on my due date ( and not let me go overdue) I was thinking of paying for a private scan to check the size and weight of the baby. When do you think would be a good time to do this??? Do you think the MW would take this into consideration?? and will we be able to keep the sex a surprise at a later scan?

sorry this is a me me me post!!!

swampster · 12/11/2008 18:03

Lardy, as understand it, bigger babies aren't necessarily harder to push out. But induction is horrid and will never make for a pleasant labour.

mumoverseas · 12/11/2008 18:05

hi lardy, sorry you are worrying about it so early on. I would have thought that your midwife (and doctors) would take into account what happened to you last time and keep an eye on what is happening during your labour. I would have thought they'd take into account any private scan you had and I'm sure if you tell the person doing the scan that you don't want to know what flavour you are having they should respect that (just keep reminding them!) Not sure when the best time to have a scan would be but I'd have thought nearer the time you are due would give a more accurate size? Hope you don't worry too much x
