Heh - good result MS! They are right, way too precious to have you worrying about it - stress isn't good for pregnant women anyway! I had a v minor bleed in my last pregnancy at 17 weeks and went straight to A&E in a panic. They were happy to check everything out and I quickly got the reassurance I needed.

Thanks mrsy - let me know if you don't get the message
(apparently it takes a while to chug through from MN Towers anyway).

dinkystinky · 11/11/2008 12:49

Good on you Markstretch - hope the delivery suite meets your expectations...

LittleSez - think its a case of grass is always greener - am v of you being a dance teacher. Would love to be one but was definitely born with 2 left feet...

OP posts:
herbgarden · 11/11/2008 13:09

Afternoon all - just eating my sarnie at my desk and catching up....

MS - hope all goes ok for you and no doubt you'll report back later.

Well done all of you for getting the list just about right - Pluto, you get a slapped wrist for putting yourself out of chronological order......I'm surprised Mrsy hasn't spotted it yet......

We had a 4am wake up call this morning -beat that eh?....

I have only 16 actual days in the office left until I go on mat leave (24 Dec)..... Do I win?? (that's if I've not been carted off to an institution before then due to sleep deprivation)

laidbackinengland · 11/11/2008 13:54

Hope all is well at 3 MS.

Herb - I don't want to get competitive, but... only 11 days for me . 2 days a week up until 18th December.

littlesez what kind of dance do you teach ?

I want to add that DC4 is a girl but I'm too scared of ruining the list to add it !

MamaGoose · 11/11/2008 13:54

Aaargh, I've been cut off the list . Will add self back on -

Markstretch - hope the bleed gets sorted and you get your anti-d.
TBM - glad you are still with us even if it's for another 4wks!

Went for my routine check on Friday. Was told I was small for dates as I measured 23cm at 28wks (so seriously below where I should be). Really scared me because my boys were both relatively big. Doctor sent me for a scan but receptionist told me I couldn't be seen till December and wasn't interested when I tried to tell her there was a problem with the baby . Anyway after much panicking and crying, and paying another midwife to come and check me on Sat morning, the doctor scanned me himself yesterday and all is normal!!! I always carry low and baby is just head down in my pelvis already but is totally normal size. Phew.

xx
TinkerBellesMum · 11/11/2008 14:19

I'll not leave you that quickly MamaGoose! I'll still be around until the last baby or we decide to completely move over to Post-Natal, which ever comes first.

Grr I have heartburn and my local shop has sold out of Kendal (the only thing that helps ease it).

america · 11/11/2008 14:42

I hate money. I hate money. I hate money. Or rather the lack of it. Why can I not be rich? Although I might stress about money even if I had loads...

I've been doing our financies for next year and realised that we will really struggle the last few months with only SMP. Had we been wise and actually put some money aside for it, I'd feel a lot better...

onwardandoutward · 11/11/2008 14:54

PT - on picking up, or not, I've found that kneeling down on the floor and offering as many long hugs as child wants until child is then ready to run off by themself can be a good solution. So it's not "no, I can't carry you", but "let's have a nice long hug and snuggle... oh, are you running off on your own legs already? how astonishing! "

And nadsssss - crowning doesn't necessarily exactly hurt. At least it didn't for me, last time. It was a huge sensation of s-t-r-e-t-c-h in a ring around the narrowest bit of the vagina, but it was more like wide-eyed "bloody hell that's weird!!!" than "ow ow ow ow ow make it stop". It only lasts for a moment. And of course, what it tells you is that the baby is here, and if you look down you'll see, well, just your belly probably, but if you put your hand down, you'll feel the baby's head, and then the hormones just go bananas and the rest of the baby slithers out and crowning just remains in your memory as the last odd sensation which happened before the baby arrived. 'Tis not a bit to worry about IMO

mrsy · 11/11/2008 15:49

herby - I had noticed, but decided to let it go, or I'll end up in a funny white jacket.... Also ignoring the fact that cocodrillo is not in the 'mrsy' format - I'm rising above any and all list issues!

PinkTulips · 11/11/2008 15:52

O&u, i have been trying that and my friend who i spend alot of time with and dp have been trying to gently encourage him to either go to them or let me just hug him on the floor but he just gets hysterical and hangs off me.

i think it has alot to do with the fact that although he's happy about the idea of a new baby he's very insistant that he's the 'big baby' and when i refuse to lift him he feels threatened

MS, don't be silly.... the hospital are there for situations like this, you should never feel babd about ringing them and if they want you to come in they're taking this seriously which is good. i hope you and baby are getting the all clear as i type and hopefully you'll be back at home soon with some piece of mind (and snuggly pjs, chocolate and a cuppa wouldn't go amiss )

nadss.... honestly it's not that bad. the only point where it gets tough is transition and at that point you're practically there. crowning is fine, it's made to sound alot worse than it really is but it's just a stinging burning sensation but i find i quite like it in a wierd way as it's the ultimate proof that the whole pregnancy thing is almost done with and you'll be holding your baby within moments. just push as hard as you can against it and it'lll be over in moments, it think alot of women make the mistake of not wanting it to hurt and therefore not pushing into it so ultimately make it last ages when it could be done in seconds.

don't stress about labour or it will seem much worse than it is. try to relax and just tell yourself that every contraction is one closer to holding baby and you'll find it can be an almost pleasant experiance... tiring but in a good way.

TinkerBellesMum · 11/11/2008 16:16

Think about all the hormones involved in having a baby. The first one is oxytocin, the love hormone! It's there when you fall in love with your OH, it's there when you make love to him, it's there when you give birth and it's there when you feed your baby. Would you have fallen in love or make love if you were/ are stressed? Probably not and the reason is adrenalin cancels out oxytocin. The same is true of labour.

If you imagine an animal labouring in the wild, they will need a nice dark quiet place where they're safe from predators. If they know a predator is about they will release adrenalin, the "fight or flight" hormone. They are vulnerable whilst they're labouring so that burst of adrenalin will give them the space to either fight off the predator or run away.

Later on a kick of adrenalin will help you along, but that won't happen because you're stressing about pain, it will happen naturally. Midwives know if and when to help that burst along (have a read on MN how many women suddenly delivered when they were told they would be prepared for a CS as things were too slow).

At the end you are full of love hormones and fight or flight. You stay and the "fight" is falling in love.

If you can keep reminding yourself of all that whilst you are still pregnant and remind yourself why you are doing it when you're there it will help you through.

To my tandeming friends, I need a little rant! My HV just asked me how I'll deal with the breastfeeding when the baby is here as Tink won't be having any!!!

PinkTulips · 11/11/2008 16:29

grr at the HV on your behalf. facinating how dim some of them are really sin't it? guess she'd tell moms expecting twins they couldn't feed 2 as well which is so

speaking of bf, ds is still nursing every 2 or 3 days, every time i think he's stopped he surprises me by wanting a marathon nursing session wonder whether he'll ask for more mama milk when he's got competition though?

mslucy · 11/11/2008 16:37

MS. You should never feel bad about calling the hospital - that's what they're there for.

Just back from hospital - all is fine.
Heard Stanley's little heart, blood pressure fine, got my Anti D and no scary moments with the scales (always a blessing )
No gestational diabetes and I don't have to go back until just before Xmas - for another anti D shot.

The only thing that surprised me is that my measurements came up a tiny bit small - as 26 weeks, even though I am nearly 28 weeks and said they didn't think I'd have a very big baby.

I feel very large already and am slightly sceptical as DS was a whopper (even though I was told he was "average").

What I want to know is how much can they really tell just from measuring your belly?

laidbackinengland · 11/11/2008 17:52

mslucy...I am convinced that the fundal measurements are about as accurate as most of the entries in a 'guess the weight of the cake' competition ! When I was told I was having an average size baby with DS2 - he was 10lb4, withe DS3 they were talking 11lbs plus - he was 8lb 8.

onwards and TBM you are actually making me look forward to giving birth again !

MS any news yet hun ?

TinkerBellesMum · 11/11/2008 18:14

I've never had my fundal height done, I have too many scans! I think they did it when I was in labour the other week.

I think labour can be a lot more "enjoyable" if we're actually properly prepared for it. Pain is good but it doesn't have to be really bad. Here's an extract from a handout the hospital antenatal course gave:

Pain triggers essential hormone interactions designed to keep labour as normal and as safe as possible for mother and baby.

You do not really need to be taught what to do to handle the pain. Everyone manages differently and pain helps women to move around in response to the pain in order to get comfort in a physiological way.

Labour does not hurt all the time. Transition is often the worst time but it does signal progress and heralds the baby?s imminent arrival.

Endorphins are inhibited by Adrenalin which is produced when we are fearful and anxious.

Pain is protective and diagnostic. If all is going well the pain will be manageable, indicating a good flow of hormones. Excessive pain may indicate a problem- so masking the pain can mask underlying problems.

Pain of labour is not life threatening. The emotional high caused by the endorphins is beneficial to the baby and make an essential contribution to the bonding process.

Pain Tells You

  1. You?re in labour
  2. Where you are in labour
  3. How to move in labour
4 Endorphin Production is going well
  1. That everything is going well

Altering the Perception of Pain

The following has a bearing in how you perceive the pain you are experiencing:

1 The Midwife/ other caregivers
2 Your birth partner
3 The environment
4 Self help pain relief (breathing, massage, water, positions)
5 Medical pain relief (gas and air, TENS, pethidine, epidural)
6 Knowledge - being able to visualise what is happening inside

nadssss · 11/11/2008 18:28

Mamagoose ? that is terrible ? you must have been so worried. So glad the baby is measuring right now.

Onward ? I am still only peeping at the more graphic books showing the head coming out. Cannot believe that will be me (all of us, in fact) in 3 months! PT ? v amused that you kind of like the stinging! TBM ? I love your animal analogy ? and bring on the oxytocin!

Was planning to be very relaxed about drugs and not have any definite plans for or against ? but then found out you can?t have an epidural in a water bath (which should have been obvious but I was being thick). Really want the water birth so think G and A and a positive attitude (unless it really starts to hurt?)

MamaGoose · 11/11/2008 19:41

mslucy - don't listen to the measurement thing (read my post from earlier today!!) - I only measure 23cm (at 28wks) and was sobbing outside the clinic on Friday filled with worry (DS2 was 4.2kg at birth - I don't have small babies). Had scan yesterday and my baby is completely normal size. The fundal height thing is not accurate with some women.

Pinktulips - you cannot describe labour as pleasureable!!

When I was pregnant with my first, a colleague at work described it as "pain like you can never imagine". That pretty much sums it up as far as I'm concerned! Partly because it's so intense but peaks and troughs with the contractions, but also because it's not a normal 'hurt' sort of pain, it's totally different and primitive. Didn't stop me opting for a homebirth with DS2! You do get a massive high afterwards.

pluto · 11/11/2008 20:07

I know, I know, I know. Must read instructions and proof read my work. Actually - I think it's subliminal thing - baby is bound to be at least 10 days late so bottom of the list was probably a better place for me.

lardybump - Gold star

pluto - must try harder

mslucy - I measure 4 weeks to big - scan shows baby bang on the growth line thing so I say 'pah' to my fundus he he he!!!

mslucy · 11/11/2008 20:29

thanks everyone for your kind words.

I know it's a load of old cobblers, but just the slightest thing sets me off on a worry fest.

There is absolutely NO WAY this will be a small baby!!!!

Though I have just fed it a double portion of potato curry, just to be on the safe side.

TBM your stuff about labour/pain makes sense.
I'm afraid I'm someone who very much lives on their nerves - works freelance, deals with stressful people, always up against deadlines - and I've often felt I produced more than my fair share of adrenaline.

I've often wondered if this is why I don't find conception esp easy and found labour an absolute bloody nightmare.

I guess what makes you good at some things makes you bad at others.

Added myself in.. havent managed to catch up at all with the thread, but hope everyone is doing well!
TinkerBellesMum · 11/11/2008 20:37

mslucy, you could be right. My antenatal tutor was saying that she thinks I over produce oxytocin and that's why I keep going into labour. Thinking about what oxytocin does I can actually believe that, I'm quite a loving person (too much so sometimes), have the sex drive of a man and breastfeeding has never really been a problem for me.

If anyone is watching Holby right now, there's an example of how an Adrenalin kick helps at the end!
