Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MarkStretch · 07/11/2008 11:31

Quick question for everyone- when are people seeing their midwives? I last saw mine at 16 weeks, they told me to ring and make an appointment for 28 weeks for my anti-d injections, just rang and they can't see me til 5th December!

I'm seeing my consultant in 2 weeks, does this sound right? Should I be hearing from my midwife a bit more?

KT1983 · 07/11/2008 11:32

I think the nearest H&M with Maternity is Oxford Street or is it Regents St?
Maybe il have a sneak out of work later today.

When I was last in Mothercare, I looked briefly at the Maternity clothes - They are not nice! And I agree...Extremely over priced!

Baby is jumping around loads today - Can tell she is a little girl...Getting excited at the prospect of shopping!

KT1983 · 07/11/2008 11:34

I saw my midwife a few days ago - and they booked me in to see them again on the 20th ( when il be 28weeks ) Then I see a doc or midwife every 4weeks from then onwards.

PinkTulips · 07/11/2008 11:49

MS... at my last appointment they decided it would be 10 weeks til my next one, i see the gp twice in the meantime but won't see any midwife or obstetrciian until december

eejaykay · 07/11/2008 12:01

MS, I was surprised cos after my 16 week appointment I'm not seeing the midwife again til 9th December, but i think this is normal. I'm glad I had a consultant appointment this week though, it just feels like a really long stretch bwteen mw appointments.

Hey KT, I'm going to head down the H&M at Oxford Circus at lunchtime (about 1ish). Shall I report back?

KT1983 · 07/11/2008 12:11

Defo eejaykay, have a good scout about.
Thinking of heading down about 3'ish.

Is it on oxford street or regent street? I always head in the wrong directions when I get off the tube.

eejaykay · 07/11/2008 12:26

It's on the corner of Oxford Street and Regent Street - but the exits are a maze at that tube station, I think it's easier just to get up top and work it out from there. Will also be shopping for comfy shoes, the heels just have to go...

spottyshoes · 07/11/2008 12:27

Eurgh you're right Dinky he just isnt a Bond - I cant understand why everyone loves him! Japanese food sounds yum.

Glad your heating is fixed working again PT. Typical timing though - bet he charged a fortune just for coming out!

I'm not due to see the MW until 4th Dec - that is if she has room. She only has her clinic on a Thurs and the Receptionists only hold the list 3 weeks in advance so I cant even ring to book until next week! If it's already booked up I just have to keep trying every week so might not get to see her for ages It's seems ages since I saw anyone but at least I know I have a consultant appt booked in Jan. Far cry from last time when I was seen and scanned every 2 weeks!

swampster · 07/11/2008 13:29

Spotty - nappy advice from kittykins:

My nappies smell stale and night nappies seem to hold onto the ammonia smell even after washing.
This is most likely to be down to detergent build up in the fabric. Try washing your nappies with no detergent at all and check the machine to see how soapy the water is. If you see soap suds in the machine you have detergent build up in the nappies. Continue to wash with no detergent but with a spoonful of washing soda crystals in the powder drawer of your machine (to help cut through the build up) for as many washes as it takes to see no suds in the machine during the wash and rinse cycles.

Or try rinsing with a bit of vinegar once in a blue moon.

My nappies are having a quick tumble . I have too much wet laundry for them not to at the moment.

Calico1 · 07/11/2008 13:32

I just got lots of Formes stuff from Ebay -second hand of course but it's great quality so looks good as new. I bought one skirt in there last pregnancy which costs as much as I've spent on my whole wardrobe this time. Their dresses are a bit frumpy though...

Btw - was it you Spottyshoes that has been suffering from sinus problems? My cold has advanced into really bad sinus pain today - can't think straight so much pressure and pain around my eye. What do you do to ease it?

laidbackinengland · 07/11/2008 13:37

MS I see my midwife every 3 weeks at the moment and have done from 26 weeks , so 26,29,32,35 then I think weekly from then.

laidbackinengland · 07/11/2008 13:39

Calico...I've had sinusitus from hell for over two weeks. I have taken paracetamol and had my head over a bowl of hot water, but nothing much has seemed to clear it. Bending over is soooo painful .

herbgarden · 07/11/2008 13:46

ms saw doc at 24 weeks for routine check up and then am seeing midwife at 28 weeks for bloods and check up......that's what's recommended in the pack I got - you just make your own appointments ( unless you are presumably a "special" case in which case the normal rules I suspect won't apply and you'd be advised otherwise)....

Calico1 · 07/11/2008 13:47

I'll try the hot water trick , thanks - I feel like someone is drilling into my face at the moment..... feel bad as I screamed at DS this morning as he was pulling my hair as I was trying to have a 5 minute sit down. He looked really puzzled and then just said ahhh mummy and gave me a hug - which of course made me burst into tears

swampster · 07/11/2008 13:47

KazzaL - fantastic websites for cloth nappies (buying and advice):

The Nappy Lady

Kittykins

Twinkle Twinkle - they sell my current favourite all-in-on gorgeous out-and-about nappies Itti Bitti D'Lish

(I like all-in-ones for older babies, so here's a link to some BumGenius nappies).

Tots Bots for nappies - still prefer Motherease for wraps.

Good value at the moment, Amazon for Tots Bots Bamboozles They had some REALLY cheap cotton Tots Bots (under 3 squid) but they appear to be gone now).

For night-time, I'm finding microfibre nappies really good - I'm using Tots Bots Fluffles, but they are discontinued. I hear many people prefer Little Lamb nappies and they are relatively cheap. They do cotton (bulkier, tend to dry really hard unless tumbled) bamboo (absorbant, slow to dry) and microfibre (very absorbant, quick to dry, BUT artificial material). And I like fleece wraps for nights (Tots Bots and Nature Babies at the mo).

Choices are ENDLESS. And fun. And I can't help but want to try EVERYTHING!!!

herbgarden · 07/11/2008 14:08

calico my sympathies - I had the sinusitis thing a few weeks ago and I'm also quite a "snotty" person (lots of allergies) so pregnancy has made it all much worse. I'm not sure if you can use them (check on the web) but have you tried menthol crystals? You can buy from pharmacist - drop a few over a bowl of water and stick your head over with towel and inhale (v.gently they are v.strong) .

I confess that I did actually take a sudafed (the straight one not the flu remedy) decongestant for a couple of nights only - one of my friends whose f-in-law is a GP had told her that a couple really wouldn't do much harm. Can't vouch for it but it helped the stuffiness at night time together with some paracetemol.

spottyshoes · 07/11/2008 14:12

Thanks for that swampy - I do rinse them through occassionally and the water is still really sudsy. Have just popped them on now so will keep doing them till it's clear.

Calico no it's not me - I get the headaches which although around the sinus area I cant do anything about. So no advice i'm afraid

spottyshoes · 07/11/2008 14:16

Actually just looking at that site you linked swampy....

Where oh where can I get 30-40lb wraps cheaply? Everywhere seems to have sold out or are £10 each - I could do with about 6 and only spent about £80 in total on my WHOLE nappy collection so will not spend that on one size worth of wraps!!!!

america · 07/11/2008 14:19

I've been actually working for awhile and completely lost the track here.

In terms of MW appointments, I've seen mine in early October, and am now seeing the GP next week for a check-up. And the next MW appointment is in December when I'll be 30 weeks. Definitively not been followed as closely as with DS but time is just flying. My blood pressure is the lowest ever 80/50 which probably explains feeling a bit faint...

On a positive note, I just been told that due to a mess-up by the HR, I can now work only four days per week until Xmas as I have to use up all my accrued holiday before the end of the year. And I'll stop working in the end of January.

Is this the right moment to start panicking about life with two children? Already DS playing cowboys with the dog at 5am is driving me mad .

america · 07/11/2008 14:22

I neved quite got the trick with cloth nappies. We tried them with DS for the first few months and I didn't mind the washing bit, but somehow they seemed to always leak. Where did I go wrong? I bought a few new little lambs, some bamboo ones and got a selection of second hand all-in-ones. If I now wanted to try again, how much would I need to invest to get a proper starter pack?

Calico1 · 07/11/2008 14:24

Thanks Herbgarden - am heading off to the chemists in a moment so will ask about the crystals.

spottyshoes · 07/11/2008 14:28

Actually america I know you put a in there but I actually did have a bit of a wobbler the other day at the thought of having 2! DS was being particularly toddler-like and I was reaching the end of my tether and thought "shit - have we done the right thing!??!" I was going to post about it but thought u'd all think I was being silly

Good news about reducing your hours at work, it'll be nice to have a bit more time off in the run up to Xmas

KazzaL · 07/11/2008 14:36

Thanks swampster - the nappy lady suggested the bumgenius ones, so I've ordered one to try - now DS is a wriggling 18mth old who will barely lie down for a nappy change an all-in-one is really necessary and all the reviews on here & the write up on the nappy lady site seems really postive for the bumgenius nappies - just want it to come now rather than 10 days time so I can try it - i'm all excited about new nappies now, but if another type is for sale at the NCT sale tonight, then I might not be able to resist.

Last saw my MW at 25 weeks and next appt not till 29 weeks now after the GTT at 28 weeks - appts tend to get more frequent as you progress but I have noticed they seem a bit more flexible and spread out second time around. Saw the Obstetrician at 10 weeks approx and next appt is after due date!!!!

KazzaL · 07/11/2008 14:41

america & spottyshoes - couldn't agree more - getting more & more terrified & worried about having 2 especially as DS isn't sleeping - at about 4am the other night I had DS in bed with me, I'd packed DH off to the spare room and DS was coughing/puking/rolling around and thrashing about and I just lay there in floods of tears thinking that we couldn't cope with one so how would we cope with 2. ButI'm sure it will be fine, not working for the first year will make a big difference as that's half the problem at the mo, trying to work full time with no sleep.

dinkystinky · 07/11/2008 14:56

IF any consolation KazzaL (and other panicking mums of 2 to be) my friend who had a rather difficult DS found having 2 a dream as her second child is an absolute angel - so may all work out nicely for you guys too!

I have been asked by 4 different people at work today if I am having twins or if am now at my due date?! Must remember not to wear this dress again....
