Take care pix, hope things are ok.

Hatty take a look at the kellymom website as well as the archives. It is really good for bf stuff.

abbymeg · 24/10/2008 16:57

Hi Hatty! I was due on the 21st - they moved my dates - but section is booked for 15th December, so I'm on countdown. I'm exactly the same as you over feeding. I had to give up last time as she lost so much body weight they insisted on a bottle and I was too tired to fight by that point (5 days later, unhelped by MWs who, despite the fact this was only 10 years ago, seemed to believe that bottle was best). I'm determined to give it my best go this time. Milk does take a little longer to come in, or so I was told. One interesting thing I read was from a thread about sections on pregnancy. One lady said you need to try to put the baby to the breast as soon as possible. Obviously, in surgery, this is a bit difficult. However, with DD it took over a couple of hours - until I was back on the ward - before I could attempt to feed her. This time I'm going to ask to have skin to skin contact and try to feed as soon as I'm able to in recovery. I've also been told there's a massive initiative for MWs to get as many mums breastfeeding as possible, so I'm hoping to get much better help this time. If you find out anything else useful please let me know; I'm certainly going to try to do some reading before the birth and I'll keep you posted. It doesn't seem like two minutes since we were on ttc!

EffiePerine · 24/10/2008 16:59

Skin to skin immediatley after the birth (or as soon as) is a very good idea. My hospital has a policy of encouraging this, do at least stick it in your birth plan.

abbymeg · 24/10/2008 17:00

jumpjockey loafing around on the sofa is what I do best of all at the moment . It's about the only thing left I can do that gives me any pleasure! Never mind. The cold, hard, sensible chair it is then!

Rosmerta Thanks for the link; I'm going to have a look now .

abbymeg · 24/10/2008 17:02

Pixsix Hope everything is okay.

TheInvisibleHand · 24/10/2008 17:30

Hatty - the stuff I was given is called domperidone - there is some information on it and other drugs on kellymom - www.kellymom.com/health/meds/prescript_galactagogue.html. As I say, I am not totally convinced that in my case the medication made a difference, but if the milk is slow in coming its certainly worth asking about. The other thing they really encouraged me to do at the hospital was lots of expressing. Am hoping for a VBAC this time, but if do end up with a section, will be more insistent about getting skin to skin quickly. I wouldn't feel badly at all about topping up if you need to, especially as you had twins to contend with - I didn't and DD ended up extremely poorly! I should say our experience was probably a bit extreme, so wouldn't want to scare anyone. And I should add that breastfeeding was great for us in the end and will deff aim to do it again, just do my best to watch the LO more carefully and get help asap if we need it.

Verso · 24/10/2008 17:32

pixsix I hope all ok. Am on phone too. Meeting pointless. But followed up with another senior manager who helped a lot. Very tired and drained. Back in tomor am w car to pick up some stuff (rather than struggling on train tonight). Will update properly later.

TheInvisibleHand · 24/10/2008 17:34

pixisix missed your message first time round. Really hope all is well. Thinking of you.

Verso - not surprising you are drained! Hope you have a restful and much less stressful w/e.

rosmerta · 24/10/2008 17:43

pixsix hope everything is ok, let us know

indith believe me, I'm not a better woman, I'm struggling to get the work done!

hatty the roundabout thing would confuse me even when not pregnant!

summer hope you've gone home & feel better soon.

Indith · 24/10/2008 18:02

Verso take care, look after yourself.

Take care to the rest of you too Am off to Munich in the Morning until Tuesday!

kmp1 · 24/10/2008 18:07

wow - thanks so much JJ - I nearly bought it on Ebay last night - I will have a look at Boots now. My MIL gets 10% off I think!

hattyyellow · 24/10/2008 18:17

Verso you poor love, you must be shattered. So sorry the meeting didn't go well but glad you had some constructive chats with your line manager. Really hope you get looked after tonight and can get some rest.

Invisible thank you for the milk medication info - I'll definitely have a look into it. Did some quick scanning of the archives and the general MN consensus seems to be that section shouldn't/doesn't affect milk supply. DH suggested I try an alternative/more scientific source of info than MN - the cheek of it!

Verso · 24/10/2008 18:32

hatty it wasn't my line manager who was constructive unfortunately. It was another manager at the same level who I approached for help and support (ie someone completely unrelated to the situation but who has been in the business some time). My line manager has said all she's going to say and her manager was the guy I had the meeting with today.

JollyBear · 24/10/2008 18:34

Damn this laptop, it lost my post

abby nice to see you! I'm having my section the same week as you. It doesn't seem 2 minutes since we were symptom spotting with mibbes and hatty pixsix Hope all goes well at the hospital. Keep us posted.

RE nighties and jimjams, I've bought some cheap black spotty jimjams from Tesco a few sizes too big. I read somewhere nighties were better for c-sections though. Anyone with any experience of a c-scetion think I need to get a nightie too?

verso Sorry things didn't go better for you. Hope you can put it to the back of your mind and have a good weekend.

kayz Glad you got your pram ordered! It reminds me I must get ours sorted out this weekend. Good luck with the move. Hope you get back on-line soon.

I'm really suffering with aches and pains now and a bladder that holds about half a cup of wee. I did a four hour round trip on a train yesterday and jollycub was bouncing on my bladder the whole time - and it costs 30p to wee at railway stations these days!

Anyway, I've got some Aussie crunch just out of the oven which I need to cover with chocolate and then scoff , hope everyone has a good weekend. Hang on, it's Friday night and I'm at home, baking , I'm not really making good use of my last few weeks of freedom!

hattyyellow · 24/10/2008 18:41

Sorry verso tired pregnant brain! Hope you can manage to switch off somehow and have a peaceful night's sleep.

Jolly I think pj's can be a problem for a section because they can sit on the wound. Are you likely to have a section as far as you know or are you thinking just in case?

I got these www.mothercare.com/Pink-Navy-Nightshirts-2-pack/dp/B001B4VK8U/sr=1-1/qid=1224869873/ref=sr_1_1/279-7 985587-7942169?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=42764041&mcb=core. Not hugely attractive but relatively cheap for two - there may well be cheaper places if you want some just in case.

You're right it does seem so recently that we were all symptom spotting and then had that amazing run of BFP's in March! We've just started selling tickets for our pre-school Christmas fundraiser and I was just thinking today how this time last year I was deliberating whether to have a glass of wine at last year's pre-school bash because I might possibly have been pregnant!

reban · 24/10/2008 18:52

i cant believe ive had such a busy 10 days and you lot are half way through a new thread already!! I will attempt to catch up the end of them last thread and all of this one over the weekend but i cant make any promises!!
Anyway just a quick hello, hope everyone ok and just to let you know i survived my first week at my new job and actually quite enjoyed it!

Will try to catch uo and do proper post later xx

pixsix · 24/10/2008 19:39

All fine, MW said protein prob from infection and BP nothigh enough to worry about. All good! Just waiting for notes then heading home. Thanks for all the messages, have good weekends all.

traceface · 24/10/2008 19:41

pixsix - really pleased to hear it. Try and rest this weekend and get that BP back down!

traceface · 24/10/2008 19:52

hatty - I breast fed after a c-section and got loads of milk! It was an emergency section and I was in High Dependency hooked up to all sorts of drips and drugs and oxygen and monitors - and the midwife came along and attached me to a breast pump too (DD was in ICU)- I got about 2mls on first attempt which the staff froze as DD was not well enough to have oral feeds! They kept me doing it every 3 hours ish and I was soon getting massive amounts. By the time dd was allowed to feed milk through a tube I had a whole freezer full! After a few weeks I could feed her directly form the boob and she took to it really well.

lal07 · 24/10/2008 19:52

Like the look of that dressing gown Effie much more respectable than my current one. Will have to think about PJs too...had forgotten about how cold it was feeding in the night.

pixsix hope all is ok at the hospital

on breast feeding I found it really tricky to start with - but so worth sticking with. Would completely agree with theinvisiblehand about asking for help. For some reason I thought it should be easy, and it was my fault that I was finding it so hard and didn't ask for enough help. Ended up with mastitis quite badly - btw homeopathic remedy called phytoloacca complete miracle cure - sorted mine out when IV antibiotics didn't. I also found this book really helpful. It's a bit militant but does explain how it all works physically which definitely helped me to understand (e.g. that you produce milk to demand, so when the baby is going through a growth spurt you'll be a bit mis-matched for a day or so but it will right itself).

Jollybear v envious of your baking. yum.

Verso Hope getting through today has made you feel a bit better.

And finally...my midwives have been v encouraging about homebirth, so am thinking about it (30% of babies in my area are born at home). Those of you that have done/are doing what have you got in terms of plastic sheets/bed covering etc? We can't have a pool (not enough space given I want DS to be able to run about downstairs if it's during the day) and haven't really got an idea about what's best. DH keeps suggesting the tarpalin he uses to take stuff to the tip but am hoping it won't come to that

lal07 · 24/10/2008 19:53

cross post - really glad all is ok pixsix

Veggiemummy · 24/10/2008 20:40

hi all, i had to stop posting this morning, i was driving to wolverhampton for my breastfeeing helpers course this morning and was giving one of the other girls in the class a lift. she has an 11month old daughter so i had to get our old carseat from the basement. when i finally found it under all our crap it was covered in mould, so i had to clean it as best i could and the douse it in Eucalyptus oil to freshen it up. DS was very helpful and helped me blow dry the chair dry as it got quite wet with all the washing. The class was great but got caught in traffic on the way home as there was a big accident just outside of Derby so a 1hr trip took over 2hours. DS and i were shattered so we treated ourselves to a dinner at pizza express (i avoided the pizza and went for a salad) it was so nice but a little sad as this maybe one of the last times we get a dinner to ourselves for a while. He is a great little dinner and cafe partner. I promised him when the baby is a little older we'll get DH to babysit so we can go out to dinner.

you have all been very busy not much to add to all the stuff you guys have said, will be looking at the Boots site. The only new thing i have is that my active birth lady said that to help turn the baby you put a bag of frozen peas at the top of your bump and a warm compress at the bottom of your bump, apparently the baby will move it's head towards to the warmth.

rosmerta · 24/10/2008 20:45

pixsix glad everything's ok

verso sorry to hear the meeting didn't go very well.

la07 I'm planning a homebirth & like you, don't have the space for a pool - not a great idea here as ds will probably want to use it as a personal swimming pool . Anyway, the mw said to me to get a mattress protector, some cheap sheets to go on the bed, a couple of decorating sheets to go on the floor & cheap towels. She also said to have duvets etc ready to go on as the mws will change the bed after you've given birth.

rosmerta · 24/10/2008 20:49

veggie pizza express is one of ds's favourite restaurants as well! How was the course today? Apart from the long journey home.

Btw, your comment about the hot & cold things reminded me of some other similar tricks. Shining a light/playing music at the bottom of the pelvis is also meant to encourage a baby to turn as they move towards the stimulus.

Veggiemummy · 24/10/2008 20:50

oh all you homebirthers do you get a bag together or anything, how does it all work. As far as covering etc we are going to use some of the hippychick bed covers we have and old sheets, and put down some camping sleeping matts and old yoga matts that we have (the last few are more to make the floor more comfortable if i need to be on all fours. Also we don't want to use too much disposable stuff but we are going to buy a coupld of packets of disposable nappy changing matts, i know pampers make them and their may be others. They have a soft kind of absorbant side and then a water proof occlusive side they about 50cm by 50cm, so can just chuck them around the floor. We have wood floors so not hard to clean up if it does get directly onto the floor but may as well cover up and also want to keep the couch/bed any other furniture protected.

Jollybear-what is Aussie crunch?? i'm aussie but have never heard of it, if it's full of sugar i would like the recipe.
