I have heard Halfords recommended for fitting car seats too......Anyone else?

teabelly · 09/03/2005 11:07

Yeah they're supposed to be good too, it's either Tesco's or Mother & Baby mag (what a sad life I lead!) that have teamed up with Halfords to do checks for free on car seats to ensure they're fitted properly.

Oooh fab choice I think. My friend has the Quinny and loves it! The Maxi Cosi car seat has very good reviews too and I think it is one of the better ones at fitting in lots of cars. V similar to the one I have. We just couldn't get the seat belt to go round it. I would be very surprised if Mothercare don't stock it and I am sure Halfords would. I went to Paul Stride in Acomb and they were great. I bet they have it too. Specialist pram shop. KVG you are in York aren't you or is my preg brain back??

Lua · 09/03/2005 11:27

Teabelly, your test was so different from mine! I don't understand how these hospital policies can be so different! I had bllod taken only twice, and only one vial each time Sorry you got the worst of the two tests! I actually use to be a blood donor, so not too bothered by the needle....

You got me worried now... I have a graco car seat seating in a box for a month or so, but didn't even occured to me to check if it fitted in my car!!!

uwila · 09/03/2005 11:29

If you go to John Lewis, they will let you take the model on the shelf down to your car to make sure it fits. Then you take it back up and they give you a new one in the box to purchase. If nothing else, you could see it JL has the model you want and take it down for fitting into your car.

Cooperoo · 09/03/2005 11:33

Lua - We did the same with our Graco. I had it two months before trying. We took it back to Babies R Us and they did refund us despite it being such a long time. I argued we had been misadvised and made them come and see it in the car and asked the lady if she would let her newborn home in it. She agreed not and we got our money back. Don't panic it will prob fit fine but I would try it. From experience. DH had to pick our seat up from the shop (Paul Stride in York) the day dd was born as we had had to order it in very late in the day.

teabelly · 09/03/2005 11:37

Lua...yeah your test definitely sounded better...and you had a few pg's there. There was only me and one other girl (and girl is the operative word, gosh I feel like the geriatric mother-to-be again!), and a room full of oldies! And I'm not sure who looked more terrified me or her in fact with the last needle I thought both of us looked set to pass out, he he he!

I think most first stage car seats will generally fit most cars, but just go to halford's or mothercare and I'm sure they'll test it for you. You can pretend you got it from there even if you didn't, and then deal with exchanging it later if necessary. We had a brittax one for ds, and there were two ways of routing the seatbelt depending on if the car was eurpoean or far east made (shorter seatbelts on far east cars...not so many fatties I guess )

Cooperoo · 09/03/2005 11:37

No reputable place should sell a car seat without allowing you to check it in your car. This is where M&P let my friend down as they would not let her return it despite tags on etc. Don't let anyone tell you you can roll something up under it to make it tilt properly either as this is not safe. The only thing that should ever go under a car seat is possibly a non slip mat if you have leather seats. Sorry. Off my soap box now, but having one that doesn't fit is like not having one at all. A friend put hers in my car once and I refused to take her where we were supposed to be going as it was so loose! She was happy with it too. Scary. Anyway sorry getting down (from box) now!

charleypops · 09/03/2005 11:44

Oo I did enjoy my very decadent choc pud last night, felt a bit guilty, but then I could have had two instead of just one So I'm going to have that just as soon as I can open the fridge (plasterers in there at the mo')

MrsF - What a horrid night! I bet you're knacked - I can't stand sick either - worse than any other excretion as far as I'm concerned! My baby will never be sick as I specifically ordered a no-puke one!!
I think you've been very restrained with your lemon cake. It would be ancient history by now in our house

Tea - well done for yesterday! Gosh! another grower re Podrick! you're all being polite now aren't you??

KVG - great choice of pram! They look really cool and light. I'd have really thought about one of those myself had I not to do so much off roading What colour you getting?

Cooperoo · 09/03/2005 12:02

Has anyone had any nightmares since being pregnant? I got them last time too. Had awful one last night where I got shot infront of dd just as she said I love you Mummy for the first time. Woke up sobbing and couldn't get back to sleep. Had to go check on dd etc. Awful. I wasn't preg at all though so wonder what that means. This is only my second one though so I am doing better than last time.
Tea and Lua - How can the two tests be so different? Isn't it odd you have to wait for so long for the results. Our fab NHS.
Uwila, How long have you lived in the UK for now? Just being nosy. What do you miss about the USA?

I only came across it while checking out the Buzz and had to share. The buzz looks fab. I am quite jealous. I hope you find Paul Stride as good as I did. The staff were lovely.

Cooperoo · 09/03/2005 12:20

Lol at Charley's plasterers in the fridge!!
Migranes sound awful. Have you had more of those since you have been pregnant?

There are some shops that do stock the more popular UK brands but you pay alot for them. We got dd's second stage car seat here though and they couldn't help us enough (Maxi cosi priori XP). Gave us a services discount (15%) before we even asked and threw in a free summer cover (£15) and and plastic plate and rattle for dd. Worked out the same price with shipping too. Fantastic place. There is a mothercare that sells at UK prices but in Cyp £'s so 20% more expensive and it is not that big so limited choice. I couldn't find a Maclaren when I wanted one so bought that from Kiddicare and my mum flew over with it. Ebay is my fave place for pushchair shopping hee hee. Bought two three wheelers from there too. Chicco is a popular brand here. There are dedicated Chicco shops. The Cypriots will pay alot for their baby stuff though. They are (big generalisation coming up here) quite label conscious about some things. I am glad I had dd in the UK though and so have most of the stuff from then.

Cooperoo · 09/03/2005 12:35

That is new, the one in Monks Cross. Sounds promising. Give them a call. Even if they don't have the buzz they will have the car seat I reckon. Plus they have a shop in harrogate too and so might get something over for you??

Cooperoo · 09/03/2005 12:38

The toys r us and mothercare at Clifton Moor fit car seats and will have the maxi cosi I am sure too. A bit further round the ring road but maybe worth the visit. We drove to Leeds (!) to try and find someone with the travel system we wanted in stock. Waste of time.

we bought our mamas and papas first stage car seat though an independent retailer called Babycare based in south yorkshire. I had wanted a bebecar pram and car seat but it didn't fit but the mamas and papas one did. I have to say i found the base very useful although we only have the one car, very easy to put the carseat in and out. In the recent which report this car seat did well, one of the top four although none of the first stage ones did brilliantly!!

With our next stage up seat we went to halfords where they were great.

KVG - LOL! - no he's not actually in the fridge - I should've worded that differently - he's moved the fridge out so he can get behind it and the door's jammed against the units.. Red sounds funky! Don't they do an orange and purple too? I wouldn't worry about clashing with pink - gingers love to wear pink don't they? (Redhead?) and they shouldn't really, but look cool when they do.

We're hoping to get our hands finally on a Jane on Friday or Saturday over in Twickenham. Just hoping the Matrix fits in the car. Still, might be an excuse to upgrade my car if not

What horrid nightmares! - I'm having them too - being chased by zombies usually
